- [00:00:02.250]Learning by doing-
- [00:00:03.083]you're like giving yourself experience that you can take
- [00:00:05.208]into the professional world in a way that reading a book, taking a test,
- [00:00:08.375]having text-based knowledge might not necessarily prepare you.
- [00:00:12.458]Dana Clements just bought the Noyes Art Gallery,
- [00:00:16.166]and Dana and I met in a class, and she asked me to
- [00:00:19.958]show my work at the gallery. And now I know a gallery owner
- [00:00:23.666]because I went to class at UNL.
- [00:00:25.208]So that's crazy.
- [00:00:27.375]The basic rules of story are universal.
- [00:00:30.208]And so we teach them, and then we throw as many different formats at the students
- [00:00:34.125]as we possibly can.
- [00:00:35.291]They're not just doing slide decks or presentations here.
- [00:00:38.708]They're actually building a full experience
- [00:00:40.750]that an audience is going to go through.
- [00:00:43.043]We talked to two actors
- [00:00:45.128]that an audience is going to go through. we talked to two actors
- [00:00:45.166]from Chicago and two actors from L.A.
- [00:00:49.125]Just getting to talk to the people we have what we need to be successful
- [00:00:53.166]when we leave here.
- [00:00:54.375]We've gone to London, three years in a row now, and that's really exciting
- [00:00:58.916]because a lot of the video clips I show in a class like extended theater,
- [00:01:02.291]all of a sudden students are walking around, experiencing it.
- [00:01:05.500]“Oh, yeah, I remember watching this in class,
- [00:01:08.250]and now I'm actually experiencing it.”
- [00:01:10.500]With these heads, they come out of a mold, right?
- [00:01:13.791]And then I face them and then paint them.
- [00:01:16.583]These have gone off and been shown in like galleries
- [00:01:20.125]and they've sold and they live in people's outdoor spaces and indoor spaces.
- [00:01:24.291]So that's wonderful,
- [00:01:25.960]I play gigs around town a lot.
- [00:01:27.875]I've played with like the Omaha Symphony.
- [00:01:30.166]You're getting your foot in the door, getting these jobs and opportunities.
- [00:01:33.666]And there are plenty of those for music students.
- [00:01:38.000]a lot of our students interned in New York
- [00:01:40.375]and San Francisco and L.A. And it’s because they don't have an attitude.
- [00:01:44.125]They're down to earth and they work hard.
- [00:01:47.375]We try to make it feel like a student has,
- [00:01:49.875]from class to rehearsal to seeing performances
- [00:01:53.541]that when they leave as seniors, they just walk into the industry
- [00:01:56.416]and feel like they've already prepared
- [00:01:58.166]for anything and everything that's going to come their way.
