- [00:00:01.054](pleasant music)
- [00:00:06.390]Hi, this is CS4 NE.
- [00:00:09.030]I'm Guy Trainin, a professor
- [00:00:10.410]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:00:12.540]I'm Kimberly Ingram Beck from Gretna Public Schools.
- [00:00:15.300]And today we have an interview with?
- [00:00:17.640]Lisa Bohaty.
- [00:00:19.290]And Lisa is?
- [00:00:21.000]So she is a classroom teacher that she'll talk
- [00:00:23.730]to us about, but she is also the NETA Board and is part
- [00:00:29.160]of the Computer Science Teachers Association as well.
- [00:00:31.860]She's had some pretty awesome roles in those organizations.
- [00:00:34.530]And NETA is, if you don't know,
- [00:00:36.073]and you should know this,
- [00:00:37.437]the Nebraska Educational Technology Association, which is
- [00:00:41.640]working with the international organization
- [00:00:44.850]or the International Society for Technology
- [00:00:49.200]and Education, which we love.
- [00:00:51.330]It happens in the summer and you should go
- [00:00:53.280]if you've never been,
- [00:00:54.390]because it's a lovely. It is a lot of fun.
- [00:00:56.657]And so Lisa is gonna talk to us about NETA.
- [00:00:59.905]Yep. So there are two different conferences for NETA.
- [00:01:02.940]There is a fall conference and a spring conference.
- [00:01:05.370]So the fall conference is coming up.
- [00:01:07.290]So she's gonna talk a little bit about that.
- [00:01:09.330]And NETA is starting a computer science sponsored group.
- [00:01:13.110]So there'll be gatherings
- [00:01:14.642]and information being sent out about that.
- [00:01:18.000]And we'll probably visit the gatherings maybe
- [00:01:21.630]as participants, but also with the podcast
- [00:01:24.000]because that's an opportunity we cannot miss.
- [00:01:26.640]So let's go to the interview.
- [00:01:28.380]Lisa, thank you so much for joining us today.
- [00:01:30.720]Yes, yes.
- [00:01:32.220]Tell us a little bit about yourself
- [00:01:33.660]and your experience in education.
- [00:01:35.820]I've been teaching for 22 years.
- [00:01:37.500]I've taught kindergarten up to 12th grade.
- [00:01:40.170]I taught kindergarten for 11 years
- [00:01:41.730]and then hopped into the K5 computer science
- [00:01:45.840]and that's where I got my love of computer science.
- [00:01:48.480]So I was in Fremont, LPS, and now I'm here at East Butler.
- [00:01:51.810]So I actually get to teach K12 computer science now here.
- [00:01:55.890]So yeah, I have four high school classes
- [00:01:59.640]and then elementary in the afternoon.
- [00:02:01.050]So I do have quite a unique job,
- [00:02:03.420]but I'm also on the CSTA Planning Committee this year.
- [00:02:07.320]I got to be the committee chair, so that was fun to plan
- [00:02:11.340]that conference at a national level.
- [00:02:14.100]Awesome. Yeah, and it was great
- [00:02:15.180]to see you on stage at CSDA.
- [00:02:17.497]It's like we know her, we know famous people.
- [00:02:20.966]You know it was your birthday too, so we got
- [00:02:22.650]to celebrate your birthday with you.
- [00:02:24.570]Yeah, yeah.
- [00:02:25.403]It was my birthday, so that was super fun. Yep, yep.
- [00:02:28.410]And next year in Cleveland, Ohio, so yeah, that'll be fun.
- [00:02:31.145](Guy and Kimberly cheering)
- [00:02:33.930]From Vegas to Cleveland, Ohio okay.
- [00:02:35.597]I know, I know. And then Atlanta.
- [00:02:37.410]So Atlanta will be fun.
- [00:02:38.640]I've been to Atlanta quite a few times,
- [00:02:40.050]so that'll be fun too.
- [00:02:41.310]So if you, really, for the people listening to this,
- [00:02:45.540]CSTA is a Computer Science Teachers Association.
- [00:02:48.210]We have talked about it in the past
- [00:02:50.370]and so look up that episode.
- [00:02:53.190]But it's a great opportunity to meet like-minded teachers,
- [00:02:56.790]learn about new techniques,
- [00:02:59.160]really have a great experience.
- [00:03:02.130]It is over the summer, so you don't have
- [00:03:04.170]to worry about getting days off from work.
- [00:03:07.170]It makes it a little bit easier challenging in other ways
- [00:03:10.140]because in the summer we have to take care of kids
- [00:03:12.570]and or everything else in our lives.
- [00:03:15.060]But we are here to talk about NETA,
- [00:03:17.100]and especially our fall conference.
- [00:03:19.080]So can you tell us a little bit about what NETA is?
- [00:03:21.930]NETA is Nebraska Education Technology Association.
- [00:03:24.750]So we're an ed tech organization nonprofit
- [00:03:27.240]that plans and executes.
- [00:03:30.390]Our theme is Champion Technology For All
- [00:03:34.080]and really helping bring technology into the classroom
- [00:03:37.020]for all students and all learners.
- [00:03:39.810]So our big conference coming up here is
- [00:03:41.820]in the fall is November 1st.
- [00:03:44.257]We were really purposeful with our planning
- [00:03:46.560]'cause we heard a lot of schools have that day off
- [00:03:48.900]this year, since it's the day after Halloween,
- [00:03:51.104]a lot of schools are taking it as a PD day.
- [00:03:53.378]So we have a couple of schools
- [00:03:54.960]that are actually bringing their whole staff since they're
- [00:03:57.600]off and they're using it as their big PD days.
- [00:03:59.850]So that's pretty awesome.
- [00:04:02.100]It's always been in Kearney
- [00:04:04.950]and like we moved it, it used to be on a Monday,
- [00:04:06.990]now it's on a Friday.
- [00:04:08.460]We partner with NCSA.
- [00:04:10.980]And so this year we actually have
- [00:04:13.500]a keynote speaker from Nebraska.
- [00:04:16.380]So a local keynote speaker. (Guy and Kimberly cheering)
- [00:04:20.460]And his whole theme this year is,
- [00:04:23.340]or the keynote is Invisible Threads,
- [00:04:24.960]Data Privacy in the AI Era.
- [00:04:27.120]So he is talking about data privacy and AI
- [00:04:29.790]and really some of those key points.
- [00:04:33.120]So we also have our spring conference this year
- [00:04:35.580]that's in Kearney.
- [00:04:36.540]We're moving to Kearney. And so that is May 1st and second.
- [00:04:40.500]And so we go from November 1st or May 1st.
- [00:04:43.800]So remember that one.
- [00:04:44.880]And so yeah, that'll be exciting
- [00:04:48.300]to be out in Kearney for that too.
- [00:04:49.950]We're trying something new, something different.
- [00:04:51.840]So we're excited to be there.
- [00:04:54.480]Awesome.
- [00:04:55.313]Yes. And we are gonna be there as well.
- [00:04:57.420]Yes. In both of them.
- [00:04:59.610]Both presenting and probably,
- [00:05:01.830]or hoping, I don't know about Spring yet,
- [00:05:03.960]but I'm guessing it'll be fine.
- [00:05:05.730]And code.org will actually have a booth in the spring,
- [00:05:10.370]so come and see us in the spring.
- [00:05:12.270]That's wonderful.
- [00:05:13.740]Well, we haven't officially announced our
- [00:05:15.960]keynote speaker, but I'm super excited about our keynote
- [00:05:18.240]speaker for spring, is Adam Welcome.
- [00:05:20.760]And he wrote the book, "Kids Deserve It."
- [00:05:22.980]So if you've ever read that book.
- [00:05:25.380]So he'll be exciting for him
- [00:05:27.510]'cause he is also a formal principal,
- [00:05:29.040]so it'll be really fun to have him yeah.
- [00:05:32.014]All right.
- [00:05:33.087]Can you tell us a little bit about this
- [00:05:34.950]new computer science sponsored group that NETA's starting?
- [00:05:38.250]Yep. NETA is sponsoring a computer science group.
- [00:05:40.680]So it's all for computer science teachers.
- [00:05:42.830]Kind of a way to have those teachers be able to connect
- [00:05:47.105]and interact with each other.
- [00:05:50.220]We have a TIS group, which is
- [00:05:51.900]a Technology Integration Specialist group.
- [00:05:54.690]So that group meets twice a year.
- [00:05:56.880]So our intent is to kind of meet
- [00:05:58.230]during the big conferences in November and May,
- [00:06:00.990]and then to meet one other time throughout the year,
- [00:06:03.728]as NETA's part is to sponsor them, it's to support them
- [00:06:06.960]and provide lunch during those in-person meetings.
- [00:06:10.980]But just a way for those teachers to get together,
- [00:06:13.380]talk about how it's going,
- [00:06:16.170]the ins and outs of teaching computer science
- [00:06:18.840]and help just form that group of comradery
- [00:06:22.140]amongst those teachers.
- [00:06:23.880]Awesome. And so how do people
- [00:06:25.307]join the CS sponsored group?
- [00:06:28.380]You can go to our website netasite.org and join.
- [00:06:31.246]There's a link on there.
- [00:06:32.700]I know also we had shared it on our social media a while
- [00:06:35.220]back, which we'll reshare again.
- [00:06:38.520]And we'll also have designated time during
- [00:06:40.380]that November 1st fall conference so that they can join
- [00:06:44.220]and kind of just join there.
- [00:06:46.110]Right now it's kind of in the grassroots
- [00:06:48.210]of just starting out
- [00:06:49.560]and just trying to figure out when's the best time to meet.
- [00:06:53.100]So we put out a couple of times, a couple,
- [00:06:55.290]and we had a Google form
- [00:06:56.250]and we put out a couple of different times
- [00:06:57.720]if this works or that works.
- [00:06:59.460]So trying to find that common time
- [00:07:01.410]that teachers can just meet via Zoom
- [00:07:03.600]and then have those in-person meetups.
- [00:07:05.970]Awesome, awesome. Awesome.
- [00:07:08.760]Alright what's your message to computer science teachers,
- [00:07:12.330]or especially teachers who are going
- [00:07:14.850]to start teaching computer science for the first time?
- [00:07:18.030]I would say don't be scared. Learn along students.
- [00:07:21.210]It's fun, embrace the newness of it
- [00:07:23.820]and embrace the fun of it.
- [00:07:25.710]Students do enjoy it
- [00:07:27.180]and they, sometimes it's just getting started.
- [00:07:30.540]So, and reach out to those people.
- [00:07:33.240]I know CSCA Nebraska has started too,
- [00:07:36.180]and so they have some mentors alongside there.
- [00:07:39.060]So you know, reach out to people that have been teaching it.
- [00:07:41.940]Because anything new can be scary,
- [00:07:44.370]but it's actually, it's fun.
- [00:07:45.810]And like I said, kids do enjoy it more than they think.
- [00:07:48.930]I think they're scared by the word computer science.
- [00:07:52.050]It has that tone to it that everyone, you have
- [00:07:55.140]to be a genius to do it and you don't.
- [00:07:57.254]So, I guess that's my theory. Don't be scared.
- [00:08:02.970]Perfect. Perfect.
- [00:08:04.380]So thank you. Yes, thank you so much.
- [00:08:06.750]Yeah, thank you.
- [00:08:08.430]Alright that was a great interview
- [00:08:11.130]and I learned a lot, even though I'm going
- [00:08:13.410]and I'm participating,
- [00:08:14.760]there are all those details that are really important.
- [00:08:17.340]And learning who the keynotes are.
- [00:08:18.974]Absolutely.
- [00:08:20.190]Oh, and we got some insider information too.
- [00:08:22.290]Yeah. So we're sharing it with you.
- [00:08:24.150]And so what do you think is the most important thing
- [00:08:26.670]to take from this interview?
- [00:08:28.740]So actually there's two things.
- [00:08:30.180]So NETA was kind of my first step
- [00:08:32.449]into the educational technology realm.
- [00:08:35.370]I'd always liked technology,
- [00:08:36.960]but I'd never, I don't know,
- [00:08:39.000]incorporated a ton into my classroom
- [00:08:40.590]until I started going to NETA and got these awesome ideas
- [00:08:43.410]and got to talk to all sorts of other teachers,
- [00:08:45.210]who are doing these cool things.
- [00:08:46.875]So definitely from my own experience,
- [00:08:48.896]definitely check it out if you haven't yet.
- [00:08:51.630]But secondly, I really love Lisa's message at the end,
- [00:08:55.110]just saying, don't be scared.
- [00:08:57.570]You know, just right in.
- [00:08:59.460]The kids are gonna have a great time.
- [00:09:01.230]And I have to say that the first time I went to NETA,
- [00:09:04.710]I was an (indistinct) almost
- [00:09:08.730]by just the amount of activity
- [00:09:10.680]and the number of teachers, educators from everywhere
- [00:09:14.250]who are coming together talking about technology,
- [00:09:17.122]organizing, learning together.
- [00:09:20.190]So if you want to try things out, if you're looking
- [00:09:24.510]for a community, NETA is perfect.
- [00:09:27.570]And I'm excited to hear that schools are coming.
- [00:09:30.930]Whole staff. Yes the whole staff.
- [00:09:32.040]That's always exciting
- [00:09:33.570]because the learning together gets that much better.
- [00:09:36.780]Yeah, absolutely.
- [00:09:38.160]Alright, and we'll see you next time on CS4 and E.
- [00:09:41.124](pleasant music)
