- [00:00:00.000]Welcome back. Countdown to kickoff Huskers getting ready to take on the Indiana Hoosiers 1105 kick time today in Bloomington but before we get into more pregame a chance for us to do as we ever do every week sit down with the Chancellor of the University of Nebraska Lincoln Rodney Bennett I missed you we had a bye week last week I missed you I was gonna say the same thing about you it's like I feel like I hadn't seen you in 84 years to take a line from the Titanic loved it that's fantastic so a lot has happened I mean we had homecoming week that was a big week and then you
- [00:00:29.980]had fall break when the students got away for a couple days yeah it's really been a fantastic week
- [00:00:35.320]for me homecoming week started with showtime at the Coliseum which is an event for student
- [00:00:41.720]organizations and Greek chapters they have an opportunity to battle against each other with
- [00:00:47.280]choreographed dances I will just say for our listening audience that last homecoming I
- [00:00:53.520]participated in a choreographed dance as part of the Innocent Society this year I was
- [00:00:59.960]a judge I think that maybe that speaks to my dance moves and my rhythm so I'll judge this
- [00:01:05.600]year which was just fine we also had the opportunity to celebrate with fraternity and
- [00:01:12.700]sorority lawn displays a cornstalk festival the parade and the battle of the bands it was truly
- [00:01:20.340]a good week for homecoming and then we capped it all off with a big Husker win and we got that
- [00:01:29.940]win on your birthday I thought you probably thought that I was going to forget that it was
- [00:01:35.840]your birthday but I did not forget that it was your birthday so happy birthday belated again to
- [00:01:40.700]you and it was just a great way to end homecoming week at the University of Nebraska it's a very
- [00:01:45.660]good birthday present from the football team I appreciate that what about what about this week
- [00:01:49.120]that we just completed this week we're continuing to work hard with everything that we've got going
- [00:01:55.800]on at the university primarily around capitalizing on
- [00:01:59.920]our significant momentum we are in a very strong position as a university with outstanding faculty
- [00:02:07.920]outstanding staff and of course our students are the real star of the show our enrollment is rising
- [00:02:15.240]private giving is increasing and our alumni and friends demonstrate their strong confidence
- [00:02:22.440]in our direction and our research awards and productivity and creative activity and in our academic
- [00:02:29.900]rankings all things that we're very proud of all things that are on the rise I'll just add that
- [00:02:35.880]President Gold who has just been a rock star as our system president in his first 100 days
- [00:02:42.680]he and I are working very closely to help set priorities for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:02:49.400]priorities that will focus on three things three things Greg that I hope our listening
- [00:02:55.320]audience will remember and sort of take away from this week's broadcast
- [00:02:59.880]the three priorities center around excellence prominence and impact so excellence prominence
- [00:03:08.200]and impact when you think about the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and we believe that each of those
- [00:03:14.960]will help accelerate our positive momentum very proud of those and very proud and honored to be
- [00:03:21.000]working with our new system president fantastic you also brought along a guest today a special
- [00:03:25.040]guest Kathy Farrell the James Jr. and Susan Stewart Dean of the College of Business here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:03:29.860]Kathy always great to see you I hear you're celebrating a big anniversary here huh yes we
- [00:03:35.060]are Greg this fall marks the 60th anniversary of our Masters of Business Administration program
- [00:03:41.220]we always like to celebrate but that's what we're going to do this year is invite all Nebraska
- [00:03:47.200]business alumni to a special tailgate on Saturday November 2nd three hours prior to the Nebraska
- [00:03:53.420]versus UCLA game where MBA alumni will be honored so watch your email as you or go to our website
- [00:03:59.840]to learn more fantastic what are some of the milestones of the MBA program during those 60
- [00:04:05.580]years so the MBA has actually transformed throughout the years to meet the needs of our
- [00:04:11.280]students we first aimed at engineers then the program expanded to include other non-business
- [00:04:17.900]students as a target market it was also offered by satellite to western Nebraska through funding
- [00:04:23.980]from the legislature to expand the workforce and we also partnered with Offutt Air Force Base and the
- [00:04:29.820]Department of Defense to offer courses to military students after 9/11 we actually had to redeploy
- [00:04:38.100]our faculty in a different way because we were no longer allowed on the base and the students in the
- [00:04:43.420]program were deployed all across the world and we needed to figure out how to support those students
- [00:04:49.080]and as a result we developed our online MBA program let's talk more about online what what
- [00:04:54.740]would separate Nebraska from some other schools? So this spring, the Princeton Review ranked our
- [00:04:59.850]MBA at Nebraska number seven in the nation and number one in the state. The program is consistently
- [00:05:06.130]ranked as a best value and best online program for veterans. The highest accolades, though,
- [00:05:12.630]come from our own MBA graduates. They report starting salaries over $140,000, while we've
- [00:05:19.290]strategically kept our tuition under $34,000 to provide a high rate of return on their investment.
- [00:05:25.370]Well, that's fantastic. Dean Farrell with us here on our pregame chat. You mentioned rankings.
- [00:05:28.950]The president and the chancellor has talked about rankings in recent interviews. The College of
- [00:05:33.970]Business recently received really good feedback from U.S. News and World Report. Tell us about
- [00:05:38.130]that. That's right, Greg. The College of Business showed a considerable gain in our U.S. News
- [00:05:42.830]ranking for our undergraduate business programs. We were up nine spots to number 53,
- [00:05:48.530]and the ranking coincides with a record-breaking 11.1 percent increase in our first-year business
- [00:05:54.570]majors. We had notable growth in both accounting, or not both, but in accounting, actual science,
- [00:06:00.710]business and law, and finance. So this recognition reflects our commitment to developing business
- [00:06:07.370]leaders who meet the demands of today's workforce here in Nebraska and nationwide.
- [00:06:12.610]You touched on a few things. What else do you think goes into those rising rankings? So some of
- [00:06:17.770]the things that we've done over the years, we've been very innovative around curriculum, including
- [00:06:21.930]our business and law major, which is in its third year. We're launching a business analytics major
- [00:06:26.490]this year that will be available to incoming students in the fall as well. We also are
- [00:06:32.070]preparing our students to succeed after graduation by providing all kinds of support as it relates to
- [00:06:38.570]student services, academic advising, strengths, and career coaching. We provide free tutoring to our
- [00:06:45.530]students.
- [00:06:47.010]And then we also have a lot of specialized programs of distinction, such as our Nebraska Business
- [00:06:53.070]Honors Academy, our Teaching and Learning Center that includes special programming such as the
- [00:06:58.350]tutoring and an inclusive business leaders program, as well as our Center for Entrepreneurship. And
- [00:07:03.830]our center has a new program called Entrepreneur Catalyst that helps freshmen figure out what type
- [00:07:10.010]of support is available on campus for budding entrepreneurs.
- [00:07:13.690]Oh, that's fantastic. Chancellor Nohde, you are really proud
- [00:07:16.250]of this progress, not only in the College of Business, but several of the colleges across
- [00:07:20.570]the university. I really am, Greg. And Dean Farrell does an outstanding job of leading our
- [00:07:25.830]College of Business. Now, I have to say, just for our listening audience, that Dean Farrell has
- [00:07:30.770]really been keeping up with her rankings versus the rankings of the football program. And there
- [00:07:38.270]are some rumors that she is going to hit me up for a really big pay increase that sort of matches
- [00:07:46.050]the head coach's salary and a multi-year contract and a lot of other considerations because she's
- [00:07:53.130]doing so well with our College of Business. And she is deserving of them all. Doesn't mean she's
- [00:07:58.510]going to get them. Right. But I'm just here to tell you, but she is certainly deserving of them
- [00:08:03.470]all. We are, as the Dean just mentioned, we are seeing growth, increased enrollment,
- [00:08:08.770]rising academic rankings, increased private giving in many academic areas. Our overall
- [00:08:15.850]rankings have improved, as did our rankings among public universities in affordability
- [00:08:21.610]and in our service to veterans. All of this credit goes to outstanding leaders like Dean Farrell
- [00:08:29.430]and to our faculty and staff who work really hard every day for our students,
- [00:08:36.050]for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and for the great state of Nebraska.
- [00:08:40.910]And as chancellor, I'm very honored and very proud to be affiliated with these fine
- [00:08:45.650]folk.
- [00:08:46.010]Thank you both for being here today.
- [00:08:47.910]Chancellor, any final words before we get ready for kickoff?
- [00:08:50.730]Well, what I might do is see if Dean Farrell wants to just say anything about her request
- [00:08:55.490]to the chancellor for an increase in all things that would make her continue the good work
- [00:09:02.570]she's doing.
- [00:09:03.070]Well, I was recently on a podcast, and they asked me that, you know, since my ranking
- [00:09:09.230]is higher than the football team's ranking, shouldn't I make as much as Matt Rule?
- [00:09:13.530]And so I was going to hire them as my agent.
- [00:09:15.450]To work with me as I negotiate with Chancellor Bennett.
- [00:09:17.970]Well, the good part about the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is that we all have a great
- [00:09:23.350]relationship, as I hope our listeners have been able to experience today.
- [00:09:28.390]And Dean Farrell and the other deans really are doing a great job of providing a high
- [00:09:34.410]quality educational opportunity for so many young people across the state.
- [00:09:39.130]So all is well in Lincoln, Nebraska.
- [00:09:42.310]All is well at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:09:44.450]Fantastic.
- [00:09:45.250]Thank you both.
- [00:09:45.790]Thank you.
- [00:09:46.570]Matt Coatney is back with our Big Ten Blitz coming up next.
