- [00:00:00.000]Welcome back. Huskers getting ready to play tonight. My chance, Greg Sharp, to sit down
- [00:00:06.740]with the Chancellor of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln Rodney Bennett. Always great to see you
- [00:00:10.280]and always great to hear about all the exciting things that are going on around campus. Greg,
- [00:00:13.900]it is always good to see you. And I just want to start by sharing with the listeners, I know that
- [00:00:18.460]you all are unable to see us, but as Greg and I visit and interact, Greg has the best, most genuine,
- [00:00:26.840]authentic smile whenever we're doing these interviews. And so for a person who doesn't
- [00:00:31.720]do it every day, he just has a way of making the people that he's talking to feel really
- [00:00:36.560]relaxed and calm and at home. And I really appreciate that ability that you have, Greg.
- [00:00:42.920]So always happy to be with you. Really looking forward to today's match. I am so proud of all
- [00:00:51.020]of our student athletes and the ways in which they elevate not only their sport, but the way
- [00:00:56.820]that they elevate the university in this particular institution. Let's talk about some of those areas
- [00:01:02.940]where the university is excelling. Academics, research. Update us on that. Yeah, we are
- [00:01:07.700]continuing to work hard to capitalize on the university's significant momentum. I believe
- [00:01:14.060]that we are in a strong position with outstanding faculty and staff. And of course, our students are
- [00:01:20.780]the star of the show. Our enrollment is rising. Private giving is increasing.
- [00:01:27.600]And our alumni and friends demonstrate their confidence in our direction in research awards,
- [00:01:34.000]productivity, and creative activity are increasing. And our academic rankings are rising.
- [00:01:41.500]I'll note that President Jeff Gold, whom we all know and love and care about, just completed his
- [00:01:48.620]first 100 days as our new system president. He and I are working closely to set priorities for the
- [00:01:56.780]University of Nebraska-Lincoln, priorities that we believe will accelerate our positive momentum.
- [00:02:03.700]Let's talk more about those priorities and specifically what they mean for UNL.
- [00:02:09.040]Oh, for sure. Yeah. The priorities fall into four sort of broad areas. First is a clarification of
- [00:02:18.140]our institutional priorities, our identity, and our place in the future of higher education. So
- [00:02:26.760]of who we are as the state's land-grant flagship Big Ten R1 institution. Second is that we have to
- [00:02:36.060]increase enrollment, not only enrollment at the undergraduate level, but enrollment with graduate
- [00:02:42.760]education and with international students. And we have to do that in a way that ensures that our
- [00:02:49.960]students graduate on time and that our students are well prepared to contribute to Nebraska's
- [00:02:56.740]future on day one. So the second priority would be a focused on enrollment and growing and
- [00:03:04.000]sustaining enrollment. Third, we have to lean into our status as Nebraska's Big Ten Research
- [00:03:11.240]University and elevate our national and international profile with a greater focus on
- [00:03:18.360]excellence, prominence, and impact. And then fourth, we have to continue to improve the lives of
- [00:03:27.020]in the state of Nebraska and beyond through impactful engagement. One of the things that
- [00:03:33.760]we talk about on campus all the time is that if our work at the research university, at the land
- [00:03:40.640]grant and the flagship, is not making a difference to the citizenry of the state of Nebraska,
- [00:03:47.160]we ask ourselves, then why are we doing it? Part of what we're called to do is to elevate the state
- [00:03:54.300]of Nebraska. That land grant mission sort of calls us to behave in that manner. So we really
- [00:04:01.200]feel like our work is about elevation and improving the lives of all Nebraskans and beyond, and I'm
- [00:04:06.880]very proud of that work. As it relates to those priorities, how can Husker fans,
- [00:04:12.480]people that are listening to us before this match, and alumni contribute? Yeah, well first I'd like
- [00:04:18.240]to just thank all of our alumni, our friends, and Husker fans for what you have done
- [00:04:24.240]for this university for now more than 155 years. So thank you for that, and I also want to thank
- [00:04:31.140]you for it, for what I know that you're going to do going forward. Your role in our success is
- [00:04:38.140]critical. We need your time, we need your support, we need your expertise if we are going to reach,
- [00:04:46.800]as President Gold and I say, our extraordinary destination. You know, the president has us on
- [00:04:53.380]this odyssey to the extraordinary. And I love sort of that phrasing and that tagline,
- [00:04:59.240]the odyssey towards the extraordinary. And in order for us to accomplish that,
- [00:05:05.100]it really will require all Huskers to buy into, to see themselves here, to give us feedback that's
- [00:05:12.040]helpful, and to really be engaged, to not be sort of, you know, sideline participants or
- [00:05:18.280]observers, but to really sort of jump into this thing
- [00:05:22.520]head-on and lean into it and do all that they are able to do. The University
- [00:05:28.520]of Nebraska-Lincoln is already extraordinary in so many ways, but that
- [00:05:33.740]does not mean that we are satisfied with the status quo. We intend to press on and
- [00:05:40.400]to press forward. So we think and we hope that people who love and care about the
- [00:05:45.360]University will keep buying tickets, not only to volleyball or football, but we
- [00:05:51.680]hope that you will.
- [00:05:52.480]I hope to those two, but to other athletic competitions, as well as the number, endless
- [00:06:01.080]number of events that happen all across our campus in academic departments and laboratories
- [00:06:07.240]at the LEAD Center, at the Sheldon Museum of Art, at the International Quilt Museum,
- [00:06:13.180]and that you'll keep recommending your children and your grandchildren and your friends'
- [00:06:18.740]children and your friends' grandchildren to our office.
- [00:06:22.180]Keep speaking highly of the University of Nebraska and especially the Lincoln campus
- [00:06:30.500]to everybody that you know.
- [00:06:32.000]Our momentum is accelerated when you actively participate in the success of Nebraska's
- [00:06:40.400]Big Ten Research University, and that is, as we all know, the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
- [00:06:46.800]Chancellor, thank you.
- [00:06:48.480]Always a pleasure to sit down and visit.
- [00:06:49.900]Thank you, buddy.
- [00:06:50.660]I appreciate you.
- [00:06:51.880]We've got more pregame coming up next.
