- [00:00:00.600]My name is David Swotek. I'm excited to tell you about the many opportunities
- [00:00:05.560]youth had in 4-H this past year. 4-H, America's largest youth development
- [00:00:11.280]program, helps youth grow confidence, independence, resilience, and compassion.
- [00:00:16.600]Locally, 4-H is a partnership between the Lancaster County Government and
- [00:00:20.920]Nebraska Extension. In 4-H, we learn by doing hands-on activities in the areas
- [00:00:26.700]of science, citizenship, leadership, and healthy living, while having fun. If you
- [00:00:33.080]are ages 5 through 18, you can join 4-H. In 4-H, there's something for everyone. 4-H
- [00:00:39.940]project books are research-based. 4-H youth can choose from over 150 different
- [00:00:45.320]projects such as engineering and technology, food and nutrition,
- [00:00:49.020]horticulture, photography, clothing, entrepreneurship, livestock, horse, dog,
- [00:00:55.460]and poultry.
- [00:00:56.460]Projects are a
- [00:00:56.680]great way
- [00:00:57.740]for youth to discover future careers.
- [00:01:02.260]Youth in 4-H clubs learn projects together under the guidance of adult leaders.
- [00:01:07.000]A few clubs focus on one project, such as an animal or horticulture.
- [00:01:12.360]The heart of 4-H is the adult volunteers who lead or help with the clubs.
- [00:01:16.780]4-H has so many incredible volunteers.
- [00:01:20.600]We also have independent members who learn at their own pace.
- [00:01:24.080]4-H offers a variety of leadership opportunities.
- [00:01:26.660]Many clubs elect youth officers to run the business part of their meetings.
- [00:01:32.440]Teen council members learn leadership skills through activities such as organizing a lock-in
- [00:01:36.780]for 4th and 5th graders.
- [00:01:39.200]4-H Council is made up of adults and youth who help set policies and goals.
- [00:01:43.860]They also organize several fundraisers to support local 4-H programs and scholarships.
- [00:01:49.900]Serving our community is also a big part of what we do in 4-H.
- [00:01:53.800]Many clubs and independent members do community
- [00:01:56.640]service projects, such as making and/or
- [00:01:59.380]donating items for people in need or picking up litter. Throughout the year, Lancaster
- [00:02:05.670]County 4-H presented many hands-on workshops teaching projects related to
- [00:02:10.130]family and consumer science. There were also several animal clinics and shows, as
- [00:02:14.850]well as horsemanship testings. Many youth look forward to Clover College, which is
- [00:02:19.890]four days of workshops held each June. A large number of 4-Hers, myself included,
- [00:02:26.470]work on projects throughout the year and then exhibit them at the Lancaster
- [00:02:30.550]County Super Fair in August. It's a great way to show what we've learned. 4-H
- [00:02:35.590]activities at the fair include static exhibits, contests, and animal shows. Many
- [00:02:40.930]youth exhibitors participate in interview judging, where they talk to
- [00:02:44.350]judges about their projects. Livestock exhibitors often let fairgoers interact
- [00:02:49.450]with their animals and teach about animal agriculture. For many fairgoers,
- [00:02:53.450]this may be the only time they see a livestock animal up
- [00:02:56.350]close. Lancaster County has the largest 4-H county fair horse show in Nebraska.
- [00:03:01.070]We're so grateful for the many volunteers and community sponsors who
- [00:03:05.390]support the entire 4-H program during the fair and throughout the year. There
- [00:03:09.970]are also many statewide 4-H events we can participate in, such as the Premier
- [00:03:14.590]Animal Science Event, Life Challenge, and Nebraska State Fair. 4-H is important in
- [00:03:19.990]local school classrooms. 4-H school enrichment programs include garbology,
- [00:03:24.850]embryology,
- [00:03:26.230]Earth Wellness Festival, Ag Literacy Festival, and nutrition kits. Many
- [00:03:32.050]out-of-school programs include 4-H projects and activities such as Trash to
- [00:03:36.190]Treasure or exploring the Super Fair. On behalf of the entire Lancaster County
- [00:03:41.910]4-H staff,
- [00:03:42.970]congratulations to all 4-H youth and volunteers who commit themselves to
- [00:03:46.930]using their head,
- [00:03:49.930]heart,
- [00:03:52.930]hands,
- [00:03:55.930]and health.
