- [00:00:00.160]So our department I think is a really exceptional example of how the real world works in that we
- [00:00:06.000]have really diverse interests that all come together and work on a common problem.
- [00:00:10.560]So the issues with as urbanization continues to increase a lot of these issues are going to
- [00:00:21.280]increase as well so it's more important than ever to have ecologic engineers to solve these problems.
- [00:00:29.760]As ecological and environmental engineering students you are engineers so you will study
- [00:00:35.360]engineering subjects math chemistry physics but where we begin to differ
- [00:00:40.640]is in the studying of ecosystems and ecosystem ecology. Student might gain expertise let's say
- [00:00:49.200]in ecological engineering by going a little bit deeper in that area we're always going to be
- [00:00:53.360]working across those different fields so it really does work like the real world here in our department
- [00:00:59.520]in biosystems engineering.
- [00:01:00.880]Ecological engineering is important to Nebraska because here we have some
- [00:01:07.680]amazing environments. Water is one of our greatest resources and
- [00:01:12.480]ecological engineering can help protect our water quality. We also have habitats for the
- [00:01:18.560]Sandhill Crane and the Whooping Crane and restoration of these habitats another focus
- [00:01:23.280]of ecological engineering is really beneficial for our environment here in Nebraska.
- [00:01:29.280]So the things they can learn in my classes and the classes overall in this emphasis area is to really
- [00:01:37.520]analyze the issues that have arisen from human encroachment into the environment and to apply
- [00:01:42.840]different tools that they learn in the classes to solve these problems. At Nebraska we have
- [00:01:51.660]the best faculty, exceptional facilities, a long track record, and a vision for the
- [00:01:58.490]future. And it all comes together in this one place and you might ask why it's
- [00:02:02.210]because we are at the center of it all. We have the most irrigated land in all
- [00:02:05.710]of all of the country, we have the most innovative companies, and we have some of
- [00:02:11.030]the greatest minds coming together in one place. So it's a really exciting
- [00:02:14.950]opportunity for us to come together and look towards solutions for the next
- [00:02:21.210]generation, and to do that together in the Department of Biosystems Engineering.
- [00:02:26.550]First off, here in our department we have caring faculty, you know, you never need
- [00:02:36.030]to be intimidated to come see us, we're always here to help. We have a peer
- [00:02:39.150]mentoring program for freshmen and sophomores, where we assign you a junior
- [00:02:44.890]or senior that can mentor you, and it's a really great place to study Ecologic
- [00:02:47.910]Engineering. We're one of the few that's going to have this
- [00:02:50.770]emphasis area and hopefully later on a major. With the Nebraska, we have a wide
- [00:02:55.170]range of temperatures, precipitation. We have more pivots than any other state in
- [00:03:00.770]the United States, so we produce a lot of food, but with that comes a lot of issues
- [00:03:04.690]and we really, it's a great place to really apply what we learn in this
- [00:03:08.390]emphasis area. So we work in the natural environment, in rivers and streams,
- [00:03:16.210]protecting lakes, restoring wetlands,
- [00:03:20.330]working in the agricultural environment, producing food, preventing non-point
- [00:03:24.930]source pollution runoff, but always remembering that our solutions, whether
- [00:03:29.030]they're in the built environment or the natural environment, are from the
- [00:03:33.890]perspective of looking through an ecosystem lens.
