- [00:00:00.000]So let's start with sort of the type 1 loss, which I tend to describe as saying goodbye,
- [00:00:18.020]but without actually physically leaving. So a goodbye without leaving. That's the simplest way
- [00:00:23.880]I can define this one. And that means that the person is still physically present,
- [00:00:29.280]but psychologically they're absent. Dementia is an example of this one, right? The person
- [00:00:36.500]might still be there, but the person that you remember has changed. And so you're grieving
- [00:00:41.520]that loss. Another one could be addiction. So, you know, you remember the person, but that
- [00:00:49.360]situation is so stressful, it's changed the dynamics. So even though
- [00:00:53.340]that person might still physically be around, that psychological absence of who
- [00:00:59.640]they used to be, they've said goodbye, but they haven't really left. Then the other
- [00:01:04.020]one is saying, is the leaving without saying goodbye. So I'll say it again, it's
- [00:01:10.800]leaving, but without having the opportunity to say goodbye. So I talked
- [00:01:15.400]about the MIA missing in action soldiers. Others have included like missing or
- [00:01:20.280]kidnapping. But there's also
- [00:01:23.020]also these pieces too that are becoming maybe just more collectively aware of, which is
- [00:01:29.690]natural disaster losses. When we think about in Japan when the tsunamis had hit there,
- [00:01:37.110]a collective experience that they all had was the disaster of the tsunami hitting. But
- [00:01:45.790]if we drill it down from collective into individual and look at maybe farmers. So collectively,
- [00:01:54.690]all of the farmers experienced some sort of destruction to property, maybe the actual
- [00:01:59.790]physical loss of animals, loved ones, the death of loved ones. So a collective experience
- [00:02:07.030]at the national level, but then at a community level, the destruction throughout farmland.
- [00:02:12.130]But then at the individual level, what ambiguous loss could feel like.
- [00:02:15.790]Sound like? What if I no longer have the capacity to maintain that farming land because it's
- [00:02:21.110]been so destructed? So what does that mean for my individual identity? Am I no longer
- [00:02:25.910]a farmer? So this ambiguous loss, it's a real loss. It really is. It's just different than
- [00:02:35.430]our certainty that we have with death.
