- [00:00:00.000]My name is Allison Doctor, and I'm a career coach in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- [00:00:06.880]Why should you research companies before attending the career fair?
- [00:00:10.520]Researching companies ahead of time is a really great strategy to decide who you want to talk
- [00:00:14.920]to at the career fair and learn some basic information about those companies.
- [00:00:19.280]There are a lot of employers attending the career fair, so researching early can help
- [00:00:23.640]you narrow down the list of companies you might want to talk to.
- [00:00:27.080]I encourage you to research any companies that you find interesting, even if you don't
- [00:00:31.380]know if they're hiring your major.
- [00:00:34.320]Employers hire students from all majors, so it's worth your time to research early.
- [00:00:40.520]Researching earlier can also help you figure out what questions you might want to ask to
- [00:00:44.080]the representative and better engage with that representative.
- [00:00:48.260]It shows that we made an effort to prepare ahead of time and came prepared to the career
- [00:00:53.020]fair.
- [00:00:54.020]We want to ask better questions than "so what is your company doing?"
- [00:00:57.060]and researching early can help you ask those better questions.
- [00:01:02.200]Researching early can also help you figure out if they have any open positions that you might be a
- [00:01:06.440]good fit for, like internships, part-time jobs, or even full-time positions. It helps you to ask
- [00:01:12.920]questions about those openings and figure out if your skills might align with the company or that
- [00:01:17.240]particular position. If it feels like a good fit, you can talk with the representative about how
- [00:01:22.840]your skills and your background are a fit for the position. Now, all that being said, you don't need
- [00:01:28.280]to be an expert about that organization. Just knowing some basic information about who they are,
- [00:01:33.480]what they do, and the types of people that they may hire can help you feel better prepared for
- [00:01:38.200]those conversations. We want to show the organizations that we appreciate them attending
- [00:01:42.920]the career fair and are excited to talk with them. Now, if you're nervous about talking with
- [00:01:48.220]employers, we totally get it. I encourage you to check out the help desk
- [00:01:53.120]before heading into the career fair and talk with a career coach who can offer
- [00:01:58.120]you support, encouragement, and guidance for those conversations.
- [00:02:02.420]Thank you so much for your patience.
