- [00:00:00.113](bright music)
- [00:00:06.450]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin.
- [00:00:07.890]And I'm Kimberly Ingraham-Beck.
- [00:00:09.240]And this is "CS4NE,"
- [00:00:11.970]and today, we have a guest.
- [00:00:14.670]Yes, we have Ian, a student at UNL,
- [00:00:17.250]who's created a website.
- [00:00:18.360]And that website has been funded
- [00:00:21.540]by the National Science Foundation, partially, at least,
- [00:00:25.110]to create a collection of resources
- [00:00:27.120]that teachers across the state
- [00:00:28.620]and even beyond the state can use to teach computer science,
- [00:00:32.610]and the advantage is, it's free, it's available,
- [00:00:37.320]you do need a password, but you get that for free as well,
- [00:00:41.160]and the most important thing is,
- [00:00:43.680]you can create your own collection
- [00:00:45.360]that then you can share with other teachers.
- [00:00:48.240]So let's get to the interview. Absolutely.
- [00:00:49.890]Awesome.
- [00:00:51.480]Joining us today is Ian.
- [00:00:53.880]Ian, tell us a little bit about yourself.
- [00:00:56.520]My name is Ian Kollipara.
- [00:00:58.380]I am currently a graduate student
- [00:01:00.900]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:01:02.700]working on research and computer science education.
- [00:01:06.210]This fall, I will also be starting a position
- [00:01:08.490]as a full-time competitive programming coach
- [00:01:10.830]at Concordia Seward.
- [00:01:13.020]Perfect.
- [00:01:14.340]So tell us a little bit
- [00:01:15.270]about your experience with computer science.
- [00:01:18.180]So when I was young, my dad moved over
- [00:01:20.640]from accounting into software development,
- [00:01:22.710]and that's when I first started getting exposed
- [00:01:24.480]to a lot of technology,
- [00:01:26.010]and I always liked it, but I didn't want to go into it,
- [00:01:27.930]'cause it was what my dad did,
- [00:01:29.370]and I really liked teaching,
- [00:01:31.020]and so I went to college to study teaching,
- [00:01:33.690]and I took a programming class my junior year
- [00:01:36.810]of my high school years, and I found I really liked it,
- [00:01:40.290]so I took one in my undergrad,
- [00:01:41.970]and then the professor convinced me to double major,
- [00:01:44.460]and from there, I got really into computer science,
- [00:01:47.100]and now I'm here doing research at the university about it.
- [00:01:50.940]Perfect.
- [00:01:52.050]So how did you come up with the idea for conneCTION?
- [00:01:54.870]So the project I joined onto
- [00:01:56.820]when I initially started was the AIR@NE research group,
- [00:02:00.840]and it was near the tail end
- [00:02:03.210]of its timeframe as a research project,
- [00:02:05.490]we had a lot of data, and we wanted to make it shareable,
- [00:02:08.430]make it accessible to teachers.
- [00:02:10.290]And initially, we just built a site that you could go
- [00:02:12.810]and search up all of our materials,
- [00:02:14.580]and that was it, there's nothing more to it,
- [00:02:16.920]but as we were working on the idea and talking about it,
- [00:02:19.920]both myself and my advisor, Dr. Leen-Kiat Soh,
- [00:02:22.920]we found that we really, one of the cool pieces
- [00:02:26.040]about working with teachers is their ingenuity
- [00:02:27.990]and the ability to just take what they do have
- [00:02:30.750]and make something incredible happen from it,
- [00:02:33.210]and we wanted something that would enable that sharing.
- [00:02:35.910]And in addition, a lot of the repositories that did exist
- [00:02:39.150]had a lot of barriers to creating resources,
- [00:02:41.310]and we wanted that to be incredibly low.
- [00:02:43.980]So going from that, we were like,
- [00:02:46.200]well, what pieces do we need to add?
- [00:02:47.790]Well, we need user accounts
- [00:02:48.840]so teachers can create an account,
- [00:02:50.550]we need the ability to create things, and from there,
- [00:02:53.670]the idea of conneCTION kind of blossomed out.
- [00:02:55.710]Awesome.
- [00:02:56.670]Can you give us a quick demo of your website?
- [00:02:58.860]Yeah, so this is the homepage of conneCTION.
- [00:03:01.890]It is at connection.unl.edu.
- [00:03:06.210]When you first come here, you probably won't see this bar,
- [00:03:08.430]there'll actually be a sign up and log in,
- [00:03:11.850]but if we go to the dashboard,
- [00:03:14.460]which you get to see once you log in.
- [00:03:17.580]All right, we're good. There we go, okay.
- [00:03:19.080]When you first log in,
- [00:03:20.040]you'll be presented with a page like this,
- [00:03:21.900]and we do have a set of videos
- [00:03:23.640]accessible under our Videos tab
- [00:03:25.830]that kind of watch through using this site,
- [00:03:27.900]but initially, the big thing is the search page
- [00:03:31.290]right up here.
- [00:03:33.360]A huge piece of conneCTION is that ability
- [00:03:35.070]to discover resources and having something
- [00:03:37.920]that's designed to work well for teachers.
- [00:03:40.500]So our search page features a variety of different options,
- [00:03:44.250]but notably for teachers, you can filter by grade level,
- [00:03:47.850]going all the way from kindergarten up to 12th grade,
- [00:03:51.870]you can filter by standards, both CSTA and,
- [00:03:55.860]if we scroll down, 'cause there's a lot of CSTA standards,
- [00:03:58.470]Nebraska State standards,
- [00:03:59.970]which were recently added this year.
- [00:04:02.940]In addition to that, if you aren't looking
- [00:04:04.290]for a specific standard, but just kind of a collection,
- [00:04:06.810]we also let you filter by standard groups,
- [00:04:10.350]and then as well, because we're in computer science,
- [00:04:13.530]a lot of the time you're writing code,
- [00:04:15.030]you can filter by programming language,
- [00:04:17.250]and there's a variety of options.
- [00:04:19.380]Some that might be pretty helpful
- [00:04:20.610]would be potentially Python, Scratch, JavaScript and Java.
- [00:04:27.030]So the search is really the big piece,
- [00:04:29.070]and you can find a variety of resources.
- [00:04:31.410]For example, if I'm looking for the Dash robots,
- [00:04:35.100]I can go ahead and search,
- [00:04:38.880]give it a second,
- [00:04:40.170]and here you can see a variety of resources
- [00:04:43.500]that all talk about Dash robots.
- [00:04:45.660]For example, I might wanna look at this Dash robot one,
- [00:04:48.240]I can hop in, go ahead and take a look over here,
- [00:04:51.900]and it has a link.
- [00:04:53.100]If I open that in a different tab,
- [00:04:57.000]we can see it takes me to the Dash page,
- [00:04:59.100]I can look, and maybe if I didn't know about the Dash robot,
- [00:05:02.190]it could help me discover it.
- [00:05:04.800]So that's kind of the discoverability of conneCTION.
- [00:05:07.230]The other big piece of conneCTION
- [00:05:12.946]is the ability to go to create resources.
- [00:05:16.440]We have two different kinds of things
- [00:05:17.790]you can create primarily: posts and collections.
- [00:05:21.240]Posts are completely creative content,
- [00:05:23.760]like the Dash robot one you saw before.
- [00:05:26.070]Collections are that ability to group them together
- [00:05:28.920]based on some particular interest.
- [00:05:31.050]For example, I believe one of our more popular collections,
- [00:05:34.350]if I had back over to search,
- [00:05:37.440]is from Dr. Soh, it is just a collection of loops.
- [00:05:42.480]So if I want to only look at collections,
- [00:05:44.670]I can actually filter by that as well.
- [00:05:47.070]And if I don't provide a term,
- [00:05:48.240]it searches the whole database,
- [00:05:50.850]or it used to at least.
- [00:05:52.320]Let me search for loops.
- [00:05:56.430]Loops, (indistinct),
- [00:06:00.173]and there we go.
- [00:06:01.830]So we have a collection here,
- [00:06:03.547]"My Collection of Materials about Loops,"
- [00:06:06.120]and if I go ahead and visit this collection,
- [00:06:09.060]it looks incredibly similar to a post, it has a body,
- [00:06:12.960]but it also includes this Entries,
- [00:06:15.180]which lets you look at a list
- [00:06:16.710]of posts they've grouped together.
- [00:06:18.540]A collection could be for any purposes.
- [00:06:20.730]Right now, we have quite a few collections
- [00:06:22.560]for each of the AIR@NE cohorts,
- [00:06:24.720]but you could create one for rainy day activities,
- [00:06:27.840]you could create one for loop activities,
- [00:06:30.150]maybe you're planning a unit
- [00:06:31.230]and you want to kind of group your materials together,
- [00:06:33.630]you can create a collection that way as well.
- [00:06:35.820]And just recently, we added the ability
- [00:06:37.860]to add collections to collections,
- [00:06:39.810]so you can kind of make this hierarchical structure
- [00:06:42.060]if you're interested.
- [00:06:43.680]Beyond that, we also let you like a post
- [00:06:46.050]to let you know that you like it,
- [00:06:47.640]like a post or collection,
- [00:06:49.530]and you can also go ahead and add comments
- [00:06:51.870]to a post or a collection.
- [00:06:54.300]Comments are a way to share,
- [00:06:56.670]maybe discuss about a particular material.
- [00:06:59.490]So those are all of our main features.
- [00:07:01.950]One thing that's in the works right now
- [00:07:03.540]and we're hoping to add pretty soon is an event calendar,
- [00:07:06.810]so that people who are maybe organizing in-person events
- [00:07:09.720]can add something and people can say,
- [00:07:12.090]oh, I'm gonna go to that or not,
- [00:07:13.650]and then also subscribe to it
- [00:07:15.420]so it shows up on their particular calendar feed
- [00:07:18.150]and just help the community do in-person things
- [00:07:21.390]through an online forum.
- [00:07:23.280]Oh, that's awesome, all right.
- [00:07:25.170]Well, thanks so much for joining us today.
- [00:07:26.760]We really appreciate it.
- [00:07:27.780]Yeah, absolutely. Thank you.
- [00:07:30.120]Thank you for joining us on "CS4NE."
- [00:07:33.517]"Computer Science for Nebraska."
- [00:07:35.520]And we'll see you next time.
