- [00:00:00.200]Lifting up women in agriculture and supporting each other can make all the difference.
- [00:00:05.680]Agriculture has been a huge part of my life. I grew up on a farm in southeast Nebraska,
- [00:00:16.960]married my high school sweetheart, but before we married we actually went to the university and we
- [00:00:23.620]were both in agricultural economics and graduated from there with our undergrad degrees. Came back
- [00:00:31.320]to the home farm that my husband grew up on and so I've been a farm wife, farm partner as part of
- [00:00:39.500]our LLCs and business here, you know, my whole career. I've been very blessed though to be able
- [00:00:47.020]to be part of the ag industry and throughout my career separate from the farm too.
- [00:00:53.400]Um, so I've had a chance to, to teach at the community college in that ag business program
- [00:01:02.320]at Southeast community college in our area here. I started off actually though with the university
- [00:01:07.940]extension and, um, served about 60 farm families in our area in the, during the eighties and, um,
- [00:01:18.040]with the Nebraska farm business association. So I was a farm business consultant
- [00:01:23.020]and through my career, I really tried to be a support person in a lot of ways,
- [00:01:30.360]um, supporting what my husband does and what we do on our farm as a farm partner and farm wife,
- [00:01:36.580]but also through my career off the farm, um, I've played many, you know, I've worn different hats
- [00:01:43.300]and played different roles. So I've, I've had an opportunity to do a lot of different things
- [00:01:47.820]in my career. And then here in more recent years, came back to university extension
- [00:01:52.640]and again playing a role there and assisting folks and hopefully making good financial
- [00:02:00.380]decisions through the resources that we produce you know through our work and so on so so that's
- [00:02:07.840]really I guess that's what I I love about I guess also the fact that with agriculture it's so diverse
- [00:02:14.360]and you know we've got the crop side of things we've got the livestock side of things we've got
- [00:02:19.640]the small producers the big producers you know we've got irrigated and dry land you know so
- [00:02:27.260]so in Nebraska alone there's so much diversity and it's a challenge I guess that's partly too
- [00:02:32.680]what I like is there's a challenge there and in you know my day-to-day work because it's never
- [00:02:38.520]the same one producer has a different set of enterprises and you know you know what they're
- [00:02:45.800]doing on their farm can be different than their neighbors
- [00:02:48.400]and so again there's that challenge I think that's that's what excites me and that's what
- [00:02:54.080]I've always loved about it and I I'm a numbers person so analyzing and helping with that
- [00:03:00.920]information is just you know just part of who I am and what I do.
- [00:03:05.200]We're in southeast Nebraska and we have a purebred poultry operation and it's a contract
- [00:03:17.780]growing.
- [00:03:18.360]Um situation with Highline International out of Iowa and we've done a number of different
- [00:03:27.420]things on our farm.
- [00:03:28.120]We actually were brought back to the farm after college with poultry poultry facilities
- [00:03:34.720]that my father-in-law put up and so we were contracted commercial layers of egg layers
- [00:03:41.360]then and then we converted to hogs and that now we went back to state-of-the-art
- [00:03:48.040]poultry facility and so the barn is as a great facility we also own land but we do right now
- [00:03:56.600]rent that land out to our our nephew and niece that live nearby so there's that part of the
- [00:04:03.760]operation but also the poultry we it's a contract situation so it's going to be you know as we
- [00:04:11.500]get close to retirement here that contracts
- [00:04:14.240]going to be about up, so it'll have to be renewed. And so we are, you know, again, the facility is
- [00:04:20.720]really good, an excellent, excellent, well-built facility. So we're hopeful that at least someone
- [00:04:28.540]that is a good manager that we hire and train or whatever that can take over as the manager of that.
- [00:04:37.540]And we still may have one of our children come back and help with that as well too,
- [00:04:43.640]but it's not an absolute decision just right now.
- [00:04:48.240]But again, our hopes and dreams are that we can keep the farm unit together
- [00:04:54.140]and the next generation can kind of carry on.
- [00:04:58.320]I think it's been an amazing growth seeing what women have brought to agriculture in Nebraska through the years,
- [00:05:13.040]since I've been a part of all of that, going back to the 80s, actually.
- [00:05:17.480]Back again, when I graduated in ag economics, there were very, very, very few gals involved.
- [00:05:25.340]So that you could just see the growth of programs at the university now, too.
- [00:05:30.420]Aside from the fact that we've got women that are just really an integral part,
- [00:05:38.880]a lot of women just operating their own.
- [00:05:42.440]Farms and ranches.
- [00:05:44.200]So I think what they contribute, again, I think it takes,
- [00:05:50.640]I think the best partnerships are those that can bring different skills and abilities to the operation.
- [00:05:58.660]And I think women have, you know, oftentimes have their own, obviously,
- [00:06:04.000]strengths that they're bringing into the operation.
- [00:06:07.040]And so, you know, it takes all types.
- [00:06:10.920]And so, you know,
- [00:06:12.020]it's just,
- [00:06:12.360]it's kind of cool to see that women have, you know,
- [00:06:17.100]really kind of grown in, I guess, importance.
- [00:06:21.860]You know, they play key roles in agriculture in Nebraska, for sure.
- [00:06:26.520]You know,
- [00:06:27.200]I think my advice to women is that you seek out information and,
- [00:06:33.860]you know, education's always important.
- [00:06:36.920]And I think that's one of the things that our Women in Ag program brings to
- [00:06:40.820]Nebraska.
- [00:06:42.520]It's been a very prominent part of what goes on here.
- [00:06:45.460]And we have a lot of women that engage with the programs that are offered
- [00:06:48.180]through Women in Ag and also Annie's project and those kinds of things.
- [00:06:52.020]But also just, if you don't know, ask, I guess that's the thing too.
- [00:06:58.200]And I believe that a lot of women are more in tune to doing that.
- [00:07:01.980]And I love when, you know,
- [00:07:04.860]I can interact with other farm and ranch women and sort of assist them,
- [00:07:11.320]encourage them.
- [00:07:12.180]And it is just really, I guess,
- [00:07:15.780]just the education is important, seeking knowledge, you know,
- [00:07:20.740]learning when you don't know certain things, you know,
- [00:07:23.300]trying to tackle that topic.
- [00:07:24.860]I think that's kind of the advice that I have is don't hold back.
- [00:07:28.180]You know, I was,
- [00:07:29.520]I was blessed to be a part of Nebraska extension in the eighties,
- [00:07:34.100]as I mentioned a couple of times here now,
- [00:07:35.840]and part of starting the women in ag program,
- [00:07:41.180]actually back,
- [00:07:42.160]back then when we were going through the farm crisis period of the
- [00:07:45.460]eighties. And I think we are so,
- [00:07:47.980]I'm just so proud to see what's happened with this program.
- [00:07:53.320]It's it's endured. It's continued. You know,
- [00:07:56.760]women have embraced that.
- [00:07:58.840]We've got a great program here in Nebraska. And we, you know,
- [00:08:03.660]we've had great folks to lead the effort. That's just,
- [00:08:07.000]that is such a neat thing for me to see and to be a part of throughout my
- [00:08:11.740]career.
- [00:08:12.860]And so we're just lucky.
- [00:08:16.520]We're very blessed in this state to have our women in ag programs.
- [00:08:20.420]We're very blessed in this state to have our women in ag programs.
- [00:08:20.520]We're very blessed in this state to have our women in ag programs.
- [00:08:27.360]Thank you.
