- [00:00:00.000]and record this and share my screen.
- [00:00:03.720]All right, can everybody see this?
- [00:00:12.840]This is the Sandbox site that you can log into and follow along with.
- [00:00:16.880]I'm going to switch over here to our onboarding site.
- [00:00:21.540]So I assume everybody can see this.
- [00:00:24.060]So we're going to go over.
- [00:00:28.480]This is next gen CMS training.
- [00:00:30.400]I don't know how familiar you are with the current CMS, but if you are, the new
- [00:00:36.300]system is a fair amount different.
- [00:00:38.680]It's a little bit more modular in how you build pages.
- [00:00:42.400]It is a no HTML environment.
- [00:00:45.100]So rather than having a WYSIWYG or HTML for each page, you're just going to have
- [00:00:51.880]a WYSIWYG on most things, and then you're going to build up pages using
- [00:00:58.320]what is called layout builder and then components within layout builder.
- [00:01:01.920]So you kind of choose layouts and then you put components in there and you
- [00:01:06.040]just fill out fields and upload images.
- [00:01:09.040]And then it kind of, uh, structures everything for you.
- [00:01:11.920]So it's really nice in that regard.
- [00:01:13.320]So, uh, I'm going to go ahead and start building a little mini site.
- [00:01:17.980]So once you're logged in, you'll see the administrative toolbar up
- [00:01:23.700]here at the top of the CMS.
- [00:01:25.320]Um, that's all this stuff up here.
- [00:01:27.080]You'll see content structure.
- [00:01:28.160]Configuration people and reports.
- [00:01:30.080]We'll go through most of that as we go through the training.
- [00:01:33.860]And then when you're on a page, you'll see these familiar tabs on the upper right.
- [00:01:37.640]View edit, and then some of these others are new, then we'll touch on those.
- [00:01:42.400]So content is everything content related.
- [00:01:45.680]So I, if I click add content here, you'll see, this is the type of
- [00:01:51.020]content you can add to your site.
- [00:01:52.520]So if you look here, you'll notice you don't see basic page, which is probably the
- [00:01:58.000]type of content that you're most familiar with adding in the current system.
- [00:02:01.360]Well, this builder page is kind of two in one.
- [00:02:07.060]It it's going to be probably the most used type of content that you add to your site.
- [00:02:12.820]And it's kind of like a basic page.
- [00:02:14.560]And then it has all this new technology built into it as well.
- [00:02:18.280]So book page is similar to the old system.
- [00:02:21.520]I will just touch on that briefly.
- [00:02:23.440]News item is exactly what it says.
- [00:02:25.360]Person is for adding people to the site.
- [00:02:27.840]And then web form is very similar to the old site as well.
- [00:02:31.000]So, um, we're just going to go ahead and start by adding a person.
- [00:02:35.400]And so I'm going to fill out just these two fields.
- [00:02:42.280]And so you can kind of see what happens.
- [00:02:44.040]So this first field is what my display name is going to be.
- [00:02:48.680]The second field is a UNL directory reference.
- [00:02:51.640]So you can see that I started typing my name and it auto completed.
- [00:02:56.160]So I'm going to choose that there.
- [00:02:57.680]And I'm just going to click save just to show you what happens.
- [00:03:01.080]We're not going to do anything else here.
- [00:03:04.480]So just by filling out those two fields, I have a page, a person page for myself.
- [00:03:10.160]So it is, this is my display name and the rest of all this.
- [00:03:14.440]So job title department, all this contact information in the photo
- [00:03:20.040]is all pulling from the directory.
- [00:03:23.080]So that little directory reference field that I filled out, it's automatically
- [00:03:27.520]populating this from directory itself.
- [00:03:31.120]So if, you know, for today's purpose, if I don't want my job title to be this,
- [00:03:35.200]let's just say I can go in here and then we have fields for all of the things
- [00:03:41.680]that are pulling from directory.
- [00:03:42.880]So if I want this to be, you know, for today's purposes, maybe I want that to
- [00:03:47.120]be lead trainer, and then maybe I want to add a little bit of bio information, you
- [00:03:51.680]know, you know, Aaron, that is web element.
- [00:03:57.360]And training for
- [00:04:07.360]typing is terrible. Okay, so we'll click save.
- [00:04:15.440]And now you can see that the title, the job title is now what I filled in that
- [00:04:21.440]override field. And then I've got a little bit of bio information here. So
- [00:04:26.400]we've got a person
- [00:04:27.200]page. And, you know, we didn't have to do too much. And we didn't have to do any
- [00:04:31.840]HTML, which is a good thing. So we're going to come back to this content. And
- [00:04:36.720]you can click, you know, add content, or you can kind of hover over it and then
- [00:04:40.880]kind of use, use this menu to add content as well. So we're going to go in here,
- [00:04:48.080]and we're going to go ahead and add a builder page, because we're going to
- [00:04:51.600]build a directory page for people. So we're going to
- [00:04:57.040]say, you know, our trainers, let's just say that. And on every page, I kind of mentioned those tabs
- [00:05:07.040]at the top. So now we're in the Edit tab of our builder page. I'll click Save here really quick,
- [00:05:14.880]just you can kind of see where we're at as we move through here. So I didn't put anything in the body
- [00:05:20.400]field, we have a page, all it has right now is a title. So we're viewing that page. If I go to edit,
- [00:05:26.880]I can come back in here. And I can edit kind of all this administrative stuff, right. So I can edit
- [00:05:33.200]the title, I can put text in here, I can add it to the menu, we're going to go ahead and add it to
- [00:05:41.440]the menu here. And then I can go do some other stuff as well. We're going to click Save, because
- [00:05:50.720]we're actually going to move into that third tab, which I briefly touched on. So I
- [00:05:56.720]kind of mentioned before that this builder page is two pages kind of in one. So edit
- [00:06:04.480]kind of gives you the basic page functionality of a builder page. And then this layout tab
- [00:06:11.760]gives you the layout builder functionality of a builder page. So within this, you can see I click
- [00:06:21.100]this layout tab, and then I get all this other new information. So I get the placeholder for that body
- [00:06:26.560]text field that's on the Edit page. And then this menu, we're not going to worry about those right
- [00:06:33.440]now, we're actually going to add a section here. And this is like any builder page you build,
- [00:06:40.800]whenever you add a section, you're going to be prompted to add a layout for that section section.
- [00:06:48.440]So if you think about sections, I think in the past, we've referred to them as bands, they're
- [00:06:55.400]basically a horizontal
- [00:06:56.400]section of your page, right?
- [00:06:59.080]So if it helps to think of it as like a table, think of it as like, a section is a row.
- [00:07:06.000]And then within that row, you can put columns.
- [00:07:08.260]And then within those columns, you can put components.
- [00:07:11.280]So in this particular case, and we'll come back to this again, and we'll put more stuff,
- [00:07:16.420]we'll build more stuff using Layout Builder as we move through the training.
- [00:07:20.780]But we're going to choose one column here.
- [00:07:23.860]So you can see once I choose the layout,
- [00:07:26.240]then I have a bunch of other options as well.
- [00:07:29.540]I can put a heading in this section.
- [00:07:31.760]I can choose a background color.
- [00:07:33.260]For this one, we're just going to do light as gray.
- [00:07:36.520]I can choose a background pattern, and these patterns
- [00:07:39.080]work with the background colors.
- [00:07:40.980]So we're just going to do landmarks.
- [00:07:45.080]Then you also, for each layout, you have the ability
- [00:07:50.020]to choose a wrapper or a container.
- [00:07:52.740]So the container is the width of that.
- [00:07:56.080]And then the container is the width of that layout.
- [00:08:00.880]So standard wrapper is to the edges of the navigation area.
- [00:08:05.460]And then edge to edge goes browser edge to browser edge.
- [00:08:11.320]So if you're familiar with classes in our current system,
- [00:08:15.100]that's DCF wrapper is standard wrapper,
- [00:08:18.100]and DCF bleed is edge to edge.
- [00:08:19.760]So that's kind of insider baseball.
- [00:08:21.680]You don't even have to worry about that now.
- [00:08:23.680]We're going to go with standard wrapper.
- [00:08:25.920]So we're going to go with the edge to edge.
- [00:08:27.920]And then spacing is how much spacing there is at the top and bottom of that section.
- [00:08:32.920]So there's a few options here, and this is a multi-select.
- [00:08:36.920]So you can remove the default vertical spacing.
- [00:08:39.920]You can remove the top spacing or the bottom spacing.
- [00:08:44.920]So I could remove the top and bottom spacing by holding down the command key.
- [00:08:48.920]I could click, hold down command key, click.
- [00:08:52.920]You can also deselect them by holding down command key.
- [00:08:55.760]So I can deselect both of those.
- [00:08:58.760]You know, if I want to add extra spacing to each or if I don't.
- [00:09:04.760]In this particular case, we're just going to go with default spacing, which is kind of like a nice medium padding on that section.
- [00:09:10.760]So we're going to add our section.
- [00:09:13.760]And you can see that I now have this gray, like very light gray background with this repeating pattern over it.
- [00:09:21.760]And then I get asked to add a component because I've added a new section.
- [00:09:25.600]And then every time you add a new section, the CMS gives you the ability to add a new section both above and below that section.
- [00:09:34.100]So you can kind of keep expanding your page in any direction that you want to.
- [00:09:39.100]And you can, once it's built, then you can even drag and drop these sections from one area to another if you need to.
- [00:09:47.600]So in this particular case, we're going to add a component and you see these are kind of a list of all this pre formatted components
- [00:09:55.440]that we have and we're going to actually click this more button.
- [00:09:59.580]And so the more button includes.
- [00:10:03.440]What we call aggregated content and maybe content that's being pulled from other places or content that's located elsewhere on the site.
- [00:10:12.440]So in this particular case, we're going to do a curated list of people.
- [00:10:18.080]And let's just say lead instructor here.
- [00:10:24.280]And we'll choose.
- [00:10:25.280]And we'll choose me.
- [00:10:27.380]So this is what I meant earlier when I said building the site is a little bit more modular.
- [00:10:33.100]We created that page for myself earlier.
- [00:10:38.660]And now we're just going to reference it on this page.
- [00:10:42.080]So I'm going to add this block.
- [00:10:45.180]And you can see it's pulling this information through that we created on this other page.
- [00:10:50.220]So what's really cool about that is that, you know, if you
- [00:10:55.120]have these pages where you are, you know, adding people to these pages, you know, rather
- [00:11:04.640]than having to edit multiple pages, when you change one thing, like if I were to change
- [00:11:09.460]my title, again, it would change both on the page for myself, and the page that this is
- [00:11:15.000]referenced on.
- [00:11:16.580]So we're going to build the rest of this page, and add Saran on here.
- [00:11:21.320]So we're going to add another section.
- [00:11:24.560]So you can
- [00:11:24.960]see I've added this section.
- [00:11:26.680]I'm going to add another component.
- [00:11:28.120]We're going to go back into people list again, and we'll say other trainers.
- [00:11:37.960]And let's say Saran, and I can't remember if Eric--
- [00:11:41.720]I don't remember if Eric joined, but we'll add him anyway.
- [00:11:45.000]And then we'll just--
- [00:11:46.320]you can actually-- these change how that information is being displayed,
- [00:11:50.940]and I'll show you here.
- [00:11:51.880]So we're just going to leave the view mode as teaser.
- [00:11:54.800]If you remember on the one where I added myself at the top of the page,
- [00:11:57.960]it was teaser-featured.
- [00:11:59.240]So we're going to add this, and then we'll click Save.
- [00:12:03.220]And now you can see we've got this page, our trainers, lead instructor--
- [00:12:13.200]should say lead trainer, but whatever--
- [00:12:16.240]at the top, and then other trainers further down the page
- [00:12:20.140]with the contact information.
- [00:12:22.780]And then this page is in the navigation as well.
- [00:12:24.640]So we are going to go ahead now and add
- [00:12:30.200]a different type of content.
- [00:12:33.020]We're going to go ahead and add a news item.
- [00:12:35.080]All right.
- [00:12:39.660]So news item for August 6.
- [00:12:44.040]I always forget I need to, rather than type a bunch of text,
- [00:12:54.480]I'm going to go ahead and add a news item for August 6.
- [00:12:59.260]I just do this lorem ipsum generator.
- [00:13:02.300]OK, sorry about that.
- [00:13:08.800]So we're creating a news item here,
- [00:13:12.880]which is a structured piece of content.
- [00:13:14.880]You fill out the fields and information,
- [00:13:17.600]and it will render it for you like a news item.
- [00:13:20.120]So you can see here, when I go to add my image--
- [00:13:24.320]anytime you add an image to a component or to your site,
- [00:13:27.100]you're going to be prompted to open up
- [00:13:28.800]what is called Media Library.
- [00:13:31.960]So it is opening right now.
- [00:13:35.460]And so Media Library is the new way
- [00:13:41.200]that the CMS, you manage your files or images.
- [00:13:45.420]So in the current CMS, the old CMS,
- [00:13:50.020]the way you manage files and images is you
- [00:13:54.160]upload them into kind of a file structure system
- [00:14:00.580]where you create folders.
- [00:14:02.680]And then you can either upload images or files
- [00:14:05.680]into those folders, or you can create folders within folders.
- [00:14:08.640]And then you reference those images or files.
- [00:14:12.220]It's kind of a older--
- [00:14:14.920]I mean, it's a system that basically goes back to DOS days
- [00:14:19.600]where you would create folders, create files in those folders,
- [00:14:22.420]and then reference them.
- [00:14:24.000]The media library is completely different.
- [00:14:26.540]This is a system where everything
- [00:14:28.840]is kind of in one big pool.
- [00:14:31.920]And the way that you find your images and your files
- [00:14:37.720]is both through the file name of that image or file
- [00:14:45.520]or by tagging.
- [00:14:46.760]So what does that look like?
- [00:14:48.480]So I'm going to add a file here.
- [00:14:50.880]And let's see here.
- [00:14:53.840]Let's-- I don't know if I have a good--
- [00:14:58.080]oh, here we go.
- [00:14:58.760]So you can see I chose this image off my desktop.
- [00:15:06.760]I uploaded it.
- [00:15:07.520]And before I can even add it to the system,
- [00:15:10.480]I am prompted to add alt text.
- [00:15:13.440]So I'm going to go ahead and say student and back home.
- [00:15:23.680]And then tags, any time you add an image or a file,
- [00:15:34.020]you need to add tags to that.
- [00:15:36.260]So what I like to tell people is to think general to specific.
- [00:15:41.100]So in this sort of file, to be very general,
- [00:15:46.200]we could say that it includes a student.
- [00:15:48.480]And you can see here, this is terrible.
- [00:15:53.520]Right?
- [00:15:54.320]This is very bad.
- [00:15:55.620]We shouldn't have four different tags that say student.
- [00:16:00.700]We should have one tag that says student,
- [00:16:02.620]because if we have all these different tags,
- [00:16:05.340]then if we're looking for something specific,
- [00:16:07.860]then all these things are going to get broken up
- [00:16:10.280]into different areas.
- [00:16:11.900]We have some best practices on tagging in our CMS docs.
- [00:16:16.200]And Saren can share that link within the chat.
- [00:16:21.020]We also have some best practices on--
- [00:16:23.360]we have some best practices on file naming.
- [00:16:27.200]So the best ways to name your files.
- [00:16:29.660]So we're going to go ahead and choose Students here.
- [00:16:33.940]So this is probably also faculty, right?
- [00:16:35.900]So we're going to choose Faculty.
- [00:16:38.480]We could say this looks like it's in a classroom.
- [00:16:40.820]So we could say Classroom.
- [00:16:43.580]So you can see on some of those tags,
- [00:16:46.920]we already had tags for them created,
- [00:16:48.560]and they auto-completed.
- [00:16:49.860]And so whenever you have a tag that's already in there,
- [00:16:53.200]rather than create another new tag,
- [00:16:54.760]which I did along the way at some point
- [00:16:57.640]during one of these other trainings.
- [00:17:00.080]And then the tag where we didn't have one,
- [00:17:03.400]it did not auto-complete, so Classroom.
- [00:17:05.380]So we have three tags for this photo,
- [00:17:07.040]which is probably good, and we'll go ahead and insert this.
- [00:17:10.920]And we'll come back to Media Library again later
- [00:17:14.420]and touch on it again.
- [00:17:15.580]So now we're back in our news item.
- [00:17:19.000]We can do a cut line if we need to add more specifics
- [00:17:23.040]about this image, if we know the names of the people
- [00:17:25.980]who are in the photo or what they're working on.
- [00:17:29.840]Maybe they're working on a research project
- [00:17:31.800]in biology or something.
- [00:17:33.220]So you could put name of student, name of faculty member,
- [00:17:36.100]work on research project in blah, to be more specific.
- [00:17:41.100]Credit, so I'll put this in here just
- [00:17:44.680]so you can see what it looks like when it's rendered.
- [00:17:52.880]We can give photo credit as well.
- [00:17:55.780]We can put a byline in here.
- [00:17:58.680]And then we'll put some text in here.
- [00:18:05.140]And then if there's a person we need as a contact
- [00:18:19.920]for our news item, again, if we have them created on
- [00:18:22.720]our site, all we have to do is reference them.
- [00:18:24.700]So, again, this kind of goes back to that kind of
- [00:18:27.460]modular building that I referenced previously.
- [00:18:30.660]So let's just say this is, like, I don't know,
- [00:18:33.960]biological science at urnl.edu.
- [00:18:37.500]So, you know.
- [00:18:38.600]So we can put our URL, and this will add a related link.
- [00:18:45.980]So let's just save this and see what it looks like.
- [00:18:52.560]So you can see here's our title of our news item.
- [00:18:55.640]It was written by, published date, the cut line,
- [00:18:59.860]the image credit, the image that we uploaded, the text.
- [00:19:04.220]You know, this here is pulling through.
- [00:19:06.740]It's, again, pulling through the title from that field
- [00:19:10.560]that I overrode when I added that originally,
- [00:19:13.660]the related links that we added in here.
- [00:19:16.320]And then it automatically pulls in the news items
- [00:19:19.820]that have been added to the site most recently.
- [00:19:22.400]You know, again, formatted really nicely.
- [00:19:25.440]Looks like something you'd see on Nebraska Today.
- [00:19:27.680]We didn't even have to touch any HTML.
- [00:19:29.420]So we've added our trainers.
- [00:19:34.200]We've added a directory page and a news item.
- [00:19:38.060]Now we're going to touch on web forms really quick.
- [00:19:41.560]So we're going to go add content web form.
- [00:19:45.200]Let's go RSVP for training.
- [00:19:52.240]So you'll see when I add this web form,
- [00:19:56.200]it says web forms must first be created before referencing them.
- [00:20:00.740]So if that seems a little confusing,
- [00:20:03.820]the new system works a little bit differently with web forms.
- [00:20:07.840]In the old system, it was kind of like you created a web form.
- [00:20:12.320]It was all in one.
- [00:20:13.200]In the new system, the fields,
- [00:20:17.620]the data fields that you're collecting the information of,
- [00:20:22.080]are separated from the web form page that it's attached to.
- [00:20:25.360]So what's the benefit of that?
- [00:20:27.480]We often get asked, can I clone a web form?
- [00:20:31.040]And in the old system, you cannot clone a web form.
- [00:20:35.180]You'd have to completely rebuild it.
- [00:20:36.880]In the new system, all you need to do is create a new web form page,
- [00:20:45.300]and then you can reference those web form fields
- [00:20:47.980]for the data that you're trying to gather.
- [00:20:51.920]And then the data is attached to the page that the web form is attached to.
- [00:20:57.380]So the benefit of that is maybe you have a yearly conference
- [00:21:03.460]or a quarterly conference or a monthly conference
- [00:21:06.640]or events that you're always gathering the same sort of information for.
- [00:21:10.400]And rather than having to recreate that web form over and over and over,
- [00:21:17.340]you would just reference those fields again.
- [00:21:19.940]So I'll show you what this looks like.
- [00:21:21.760]So we're going to go ahead and select this RSVP.
- [00:21:25.040]This is the fields that have already been created.
- [00:21:28.480]We're going to save it.
- [00:21:29.940]So here, we're just referencing those fields.
- [00:21:38.480]You can see that they're all attached here.
- [00:21:41.100]You can see that the results are attached to this page.
- [00:21:45.840]So how do you edit the fields themselves?
- [00:21:51.600]Those are actually under Structure, Web Forms.
- [00:21:54.560]And you can see we referenced this RSVP one.
- [00:21:59.820]So if you want to see what that looks like, we just come in here.
- [00:22:03.800]And here, you can see all the different fields that have been added to that web form.
- [00:22:09.880]So if we want to add another one, let's just say...
- [00:22:21.440]Let's see here.
- [00:22:23.040]Would you prefer to come in person or via...
- [00:22:34.140]Oh, jeez.
- [00:22:34.680]Sorry.
- [00:22:35.720]Checkbox.
- [00:22:36.920]Let's do checkbox.
- [00:22:39.520]And then...
- [00:22:51.280]You can say attendance preference.
- [00:23:00.620]And then...
- [00:23:04.140]Oh, this is one checkbox.
- [00:23:05.340]Sorry.
- [00:23:05.720]I totally screwed that up.
- [00:23:07.440]Let me add radio.
- [00:23:14.880]Okay.
- [00:23:16.260]So we're adding a radio button.
- [00:23:18.800]So attendance...
- [00:23:21.120]And we'll say person or Zoom.
- [00:23:32.760]And then we'll remove this extra one.
- [00:23:34.700]And then we'll save this.
- [00:23:40.620]So you can see it added here.
- [00:23:44.880]We're going to go ahead and save it.
- [00:23:46.100]And then we're going to add content.
- [00:23:50.960]And then if we come back to our web form here where we reference those fields,
- [00:23:55.060]you can see we have all these other fields
- [00:23:57.640]and then this new field that we just added here.
- [00:24:00.400]So maybe you have a quarterly get-together
- [00:24:05.980]where you're always gathering the same sorts of information.
- [00:24:09.080]Rather than recreating the web form over and over,
- [00:24:11.620]you would just create new web form pages
- [00:24:14.860]and then you would attach the same web form fields data.
- [00:24:20.800]So that is web forms.
- [00:24:23.600]Let me go back to add content.
- [00:24:27.100]So book page, it's kind of like it says here,
- [00:24:32.220]books have built-in hierarchical navigation
- [00:24:34.880]used for handbooks or tutorial.
- [00:24:36.400]Rather than adding those to the site,
- [00:24:39.100]I'm going to use this as another opportunity
- [00:24:46.280]to talk about the CMS-
- [00:24:50.640]docs website.
- [00:24:51.700]So CMS-docs.unl.edu.
- [00:24:54.980]There's a bunch of information here
- [00:24:57.960]about using the new CMS.
- [00:25:01.660]So everything from WYSIWYG editor
- [00:25:04.800]to media library
- [00:25:05.840]to all the different types of content.
- [00:25:07.700]These are the types of content
- [00:25:10.400]we're talking about today.
- [00:25:11.340]And then if you click down into builder page,
- [00:25:13.940]you can see all the components
- [00:25:15.180]that you can add to the builder page.
- [00:25:16.840]So we're going to get into that very soon.
- [00:25:20.480]Um, but this here,
- [00:25:24.100]all of this navigation on the side,
- [00:25:26.240]this is what happens
- [00:25:27.840]when you create a book page.
- [00:25:29.200]So I, this introduction to NextGen CMS
- [00:25:32.400]is a book that is the title
- [00:25:36.200]of this whole book.
- [00:25:37.700]And then these are sort of sections
- [00:25:39.720]within that book.
- [00:25:40.420]And you can keep kind of layering down
- [00:25:42.920]as you need to go.
- [00:25:43.820]So again, as it, as it in here,
- [00:25:49.100]as it mentions, these are good
- [00:25:50.320]for handbooks or tutorials.
- [00:25:51.880]I've even seen people build like annual
- [00:25:54.420]reports and things like that.
- [00:25:55.700]It's just good for lots of information
- [00:25:57.940]where you might want people to be able
- [00:25:59.480]to read sequentially or not,
- [00:26:02.220]but always have kind of like a sidebar
- [00:26:04.340]navigation as they go through the site.
- [00:26:06.040]So that's really how I'm going to touch
- [00:26:08.640]on with book pages.
- [00:26:09.540]We're going to go back into builder pages
- [00:26:12.200]and we're going to add a new builder page.
- [00:26:15.020]We're going to go about our department
- [00:26:20.160]and again, we're going to add a hero.
- [00:26:24.220]So on the old site,
- [00:26:28.260]the hero is kind of tucked down
- [00:26:31.660]at the bottom of the page.
- [00:26:32.780]It only makes sense since the hero
- [00:26:35.680]is a big image that shows up
- [00:26:37.080]at the top of the page
- [00:26:38.020]to put this right at the top
- [00:26:39.340]in the new system.
- [00:26:40.200]So we're going to come back in here.
- [00:26:41.980]Again, it's going to pop us
- [00:26:44.180]into media library
- [00:26:45.260]rather than uploading another image
- [00:26:48.700]and go through,
- [00:26:50.000]through that again.
- [00:26:51.300]We're going to just go ahead
- [00:26:52.760]and choose one
- [00:26:55.780]that's already been uploaded.
- [00:26:56.660]So we're going to insert this image.
- [00:26:58.200]Object position,
- [00:27:02.660]this will kind of,
- [00:27:04.720]this allows you to kind of,
- [00:27:08.980]if you think of the hero,
- [00:27:10.360]think of the image
- [00:27:12.760]as an image that kind of floats
- [00:27:14.700]behind a mat in a picture frame.
- [00:27:17.160]And the mat is always going to cut off
- [00:27:19.840]a little bit of the top
- [00:27:20.600]and a little bit of the bottom.
- [00:27:21.580]So this allows you to kind of
- [00:27:24.420]move the image behind the mat,
- [00:27:26.000]if that makes sense.
- [00:27:27.380]These top five images,
- [00:27:30.860]so this would kind of lock
- [00:27:32.140]the top of the image
- [00:27:33.200]to the top of the mat.
- [00:27:34.520]And this would lock the image,
- [00:27:36.400]bottom of the image
- [00:27:37.500]to the bottom of the mat.
- [00:27:38.400]And this kind of just keeps it
- [00:27:40.260]centered in between.
- [00:27:40.940]So by default,
- [00:27:42.000]it's going to be centered vertically.
- [00:27:43.680]Hero size is just how much of that
- [00:27:46.720]shows us through the window.
- [00:27:47.880]I'm just going to go ahead
- [00:27:49.680]and put this in here.
- [00:27:50.780]So about overlines,
- [00:27:52.600]you can see what it looks like.
- [00:27:53.520]Apartment, about.
- [00:27:58.580]So we're going to create that.
- [00:28:03.220]We're going to come over here.
- [00:28:07.160]We're going to put this in our menu again.
- [00:28:08.780]And down here under page options,
- [00:28:17.060]well, we'll come back to that later.
- [00:28:19.520]Let's grab some dummy text, throw it on our page.
- [00:28:22.460]And let's just click save.
- [00:28:36.700]All right.
- [00:28:44.540]So you can see we have a hero image up here, our about,
- [00:28:49.360]text on our page.
- [00:28:50.200]And then we've got this little empty menu over at the side.
- [00:28:52.920]So let's kind of clean up this page a little bit
- [00:28:57.060]and do a little bit more work on it.
- [00:28:58.320]So we're going to go back into the edit tab.
- [00:29:00.220]So again, this is kind of what I mentioned previously,
- [00:29:03.480]where the builder page kind of has the ability
- [00:29:06.880]to create two different types of pages in one.
- [00:29:10.000]So we're kind of using the basic page functionality
- [00:29:13.640]of the builder page here.
- [00:29:15.180]If you noticed before, when I went down to page options,
- [00:29:19.200]you can visually hide the page title,
- [00:29:21.840]or you can hide the sidebar.
- [00:29:23.000]So we're going to hide the sidebar.
- [00:29:24.240]That's the little navigation that was showing up automatically.
- [00:29:28.100]Let's just say, you know,
- [00:29:30.740]maybe we want to put another header in here.
- [00:29:33.460]So this is all WYSIWYG formatting.
- [00:29:39.380]It's pretty easy.
- [00:29:40.340]You know, maybe I want to put another image in here.
- [00:29:44.020]So go click there.
- [00:29:46.200]Clicking this little button opens
- [00:29:49.040]the media library right here.
- [00:29:51.460]So let's just choose, you know, this one.
- [00:29:56.080]Once you add an image to your page,
- [00:30:02.340]you have the ability to format it.
- [00:30:04.140]So this is narrow,
- [00:30:05.280]which is kind of half of the viewport window.
- [00:30:09.880]Default is going to load the default size
- [00:30:12.920]that the image was uploaded at,
- [00:30:14.360]and wide is going to load it full width
- [00:30:16.840]of the browser port.
- [00:30:18.880]And then this is how the text wraps around it.
- [00:30:22.020]So this is kind of offset left,
- [00:30:24.120]floated left,
- [00:30:26.040]offset centered,
- [00:30:27.760]and offset right.
- [00:30:29.200]I think that probably looks the best for today.
- [00:30:31.620]And we've already added it to the navigation.
- [00:30:34.920]And the other thing is,
- [00:30:38.120]maybe we want a little bit more
- [00:30:40.020]of that hero photo to show through,
- [00:30:41.860]so we're going to make this large.
- [00:30:43.500]We're going to update the hero.
- [00:30:45.800]Then we'll click save on
- [00:30:48.720]the page.
- [00:30:49.280]So a little bit more of the photo
- [00:30:56.640]shows through. It looks a little bit better.
- [00:30:58.280]Now we have an image off to the
- [00:31:00.780]right. It's a little
- [00:31:02.620]less than half. It's got a formatted
- [00:31:04.640]header. And really
- [00:31:06.640]I was just showing this as a way to
- [00:31:08.580]kind of say, you know, you can create
- [00:31:10.360]nice looking pages
- [00:31:11.500]using a builder page, but not
- [00:31:14.540]even using the sort of layout
- [00:31:16.480]builder functionality. The layout builder functionality
- [00:31:18.560]is more for building kind of
- [00:31:20.740]slightly more designed
- [00:31:23.000]and elaborate pages.
- [00:31:24.360]But you can build nice pages
- [00:31:26.580]using just kind of the basic
- [00:31:28.380]page functionality of it.
- [00:31:29.820]But now, we are going
- [00:31:32.600]to come back in, and we're going to add
- [00:31:34.280]another builder page, and we're going to kind of
- [00:31:36.580]get into the more advanced functionality
- [00:31:38.640]of the builder page.
- [00:31:39.540]So we'll just call this
- [00:31:42.280]welcome, and we're going to click save.
- [00:31:48.400]So let me roll through one thing
- [00:31:50.300]really quick before we get back into
- [00:31:52.100]layout builder. So I touched on all these
- [00:31:54.060]tabs before.
- [00:31:54.860]We've got view, edit.
- [00:31:57.760]Obviously, we've been in the edit tab multiple times
- [00:32:00.220]before. We have layout
- [00:32:02.280]tab, which we've touched on
- [00:32:04.200]briefly. Revisions
- [00:32:06.120]shows you all the revisions that have been made
- [00:32:08.200]to that page and when they were made.
- [00:32:09.900]It also allows you to revert to
- [00:32:12.000]previous revisions if you have more than one.
- [00:32:14.300]Replicate is a
- [00:32:16.260]feature that I will touch on here in just a little bit
- [00:32:18.240]and delete
- [00:32:19.800]just don't even use this tab.
- [00:32:24.220]Just don't delete pages.
- [00:32:26.460]I'll just say it. Unless you're
- [00:32:28.060]like a thousand percent sure, don't delete
- [00:32:30.240]pages. They're very, very
- [00:32:32.200]difficult to get back.
- [00:32:33.300]If you have a page that you think
- [00:32:36.060]you want to delete and you're pretty sure
- [00:32:38.020]you want to delete, rather than clicking delete
- [00:32:40.200]go into the edit tab
- [00:32:42.040]here, scroll
- [00:32:44.240]down
- [00:32:44.680]and change
- [00:32:48.080]the published
- [00:32:49.340]state of your page to
- [00:32:51.980]unpublished. This will make
- [00:32:54.140]your page unviewable by
- [00:32:56.000]anyone other than those who have
- [00:32:58.200]access to your site and it
- [00:33:00.160]will be very easy to retrieve
- [00:33:02.000]that page if you need to in the future.
- [00:33:03.820]So again,
- [00:33:04.920]don't mess with the delete tab
- [00:33:07.800]unless you're like 2000% sure
- [00:33:10.160]that you need to delete a page.
- [00:33:11.600]Okay.
- [00:33:13.540]Mini rant over. Back into
- [00:33:16.020]layout. Let's build a
- [00:33:17.920]fancy homepage for our site.
- [00:33:19.120]All right. So
- [00:33:21.240]we kind of
- [00:33:24.060]touched on this before when we built our directory
- [00:33:26.040]page, but we're going
- [00:33:28.040]to go ahead and add a section
- [00:33:29.100]to this page, and we're going to do
- [00:33:31.980]a one column.
- [00:33:32.680]So for our splash page, we want like a
- [00:33:35.980]big image at the top, kind of like a
- [00:33:38.040]kind of like a hero image.
- [00:33:39.480]We're going to go ahead.
- [00:33:41.720]We're just going to add this one
- [00:33:44.060]column here. Go with it.
- [00:33:47.760]And we're going to go ahead and add a
- [00:33:49.560]component. And again,
- [00:33:51.700]all these lists of these components
- [00:33:53.180]are on CMS docs, but
- [00:33:55.620]we're going to go ahead and add a display banner.
- [00:33:57.280]So display banner is kind
- [00:33:59.700]of like a fancy hero. It allows you
- [00:34:01.620]to put a big image with some
- [00:34:03.480]text over it, call to action
- [00:34:05.700]buttons, things like that. So we're going
- [00:34:07.580]to go. I'm just going to fill all
- [00:34:09.540]these out so you can kind of see what they look like.
- [00:34:11.340]But some of these are optional.
- [00:34:17.600]We'll choose
- [00:34:19.360]an image. Obviously, we need an image
- [00:34:21.360]because
- [00:34:22.200]we're going to put some
- [00:34:27.280]text on it. So we've got
- [00:34:29.280]this nice image of East Campus.
- [00:34:30.960]All right.
- [00:34:41.600]So, you know,
- [00:34:44.860]I would say if you're going to put a link,
- [00:34:47.440]write up in your hero image, it should be
- [00:34:49.160]the most important thing that you want people to do
- [00:34:51.240]on your site. So maybe the
- [00:34:53.220]most important thing we want people to do right now
- [00:34:55.340]is RSVP for training. So we'll put
- [00:34:57.300]RSVP.
- [00:34:58.280]And whenever you're filling out a link field
- [00:35:01.400]on the website,
- [00:35:02.840]it's really easy. You don't have to
- [00:35:05.320]know the URL if the page is already
- [00:35:07.060]created on your site. All you have
- [00:35:09.220]to do is start typing
- [00:35:10.240]the title of the page that you've created.
- [00:35:13.180]So you can see here it auto-completes.
- [00:35:15.380]I select that.
- [00:35:17.280]It's created the link.
- [00:35:18.660]We can just say, you know, sign up.
- [00:35:20.760]Sign up for training.
- [00:35:23.320]Maybe put an exclamation point on it.
- [00:35:25.060]And
- [00:35:27.140]you know, we've got this image
- [00:35:29.080]here. I think because we've
- [00:35:31.140]got the building over here and the tree over here
- [00:35:33.200]which is kind of on the left,
- [00:35:34.520]this allows you to
- [00:35:37.100]choose where the text and
- [00:35:39.080]the button are going to go. I think we're going to put
- [00:35:41.180]it on the right because I think it'll look better
- [00:35:43.120]kind of floated
- [00:35:43.980]offsetting the visual
- [00:35:47.120]information of that photo.
- [00:35:48.440]Let's just save it.
- [00:35:50.340]See what we're looking like here.
- [00:35:52.340]All right. We've got
- [00:35:57.100]all this space and this
- [00:35:58.620]page title up here. We want to make this bigger
- [00:36:01.160]and we want to get rid of
- [00:36:03.120]the page title. First thing
- [00:36:05.200]we're going to do is go back into edit.
- [00:36:06.740]We're going to go to the bottom.
- [00:36:09.060]You probably saw this earlier when I was down here
- [00:36:11.220]hiding the sidebar, but this is where you would
- [00:36:13.080]hide the page title.
- [00:36:14.980]We're going to hide that.
- [00:36:16.960]It's getting closer.
- [00:36:20.000]Now we have these gaps.
- [00:36:21.240]If you remember from earlier
- [00:36:23.580]when we were formatting our section,
- [00:36:26.020]that's where we can get rid of some
- [00:36:29.960]of that padding.
- [00:36:30.600]Another user
- [00:36:33.860]interface thing that you'll see when
- [00:36:35.860]you're in the CMS on the layout builder page
- [00:36:38.780]You can see my mouse here.
- [00:36:40.380]When I'm moving it around, when I hover over the section, I get these dotted lines, and then I get a configuration link in the upper left-hand corner of the section.
- [00:36:51.800]So this is for formatting the section or kind of the container, the row, the band, whatever you want to call it.
- [00:36:58.980]This is where you configure everything about the section.
- [00:37:03.340]If I hover over the component that I placed in the section, you see that I get a little kind of edit interface to the upper right-hand side.
- [00:37:13.240]So if I want to configure this hero, this display banner that I've already dropped in here, then I could do that.
- [00:37:20.620]Well, we know that we want to configure this section because this is the area around it.
- [00:37:24.600]So we're going to click Configure Section, and we want to get rid of that default vertical spacing.
- [00:37:30.520]And then the container, we want it to go edge to edge.
- [00:37:33.320]So we're going to go edge to edge and get rid of the vertical spacing, click Update.
- [00:37:37.920]Let's just save it, see how it's looking.
- [00:37:40.420]All right, this is looking way better.
- [00:37:44.480]So it's flush against the navigation, and we've got kind of the top of our page ready to go.
- [00:37:52.860]So we're going to come back into Layout.
- [00:37:55.860]We're going to add a new section of two column.
- [00:38:01.020]And when I add a two column section, you'll see that I get the option of different column widths within that section.
- [00:38:08.880]So you can choose equal columns or smaller or larger columns on the right or left.
- [00:38:20.100]So we're just going to go with equal columns.
- [00:38:22.020]Again, you have all these options with background colors and patterns and containers and stuff, but we're just going to go with default here.
- [00:38:29.680]And then now I can add two components to this section.
- [00:38:34.980]And in this particular case, we're going to click card.
- [00:38:38.680]And if you're eagle-eyed, you'll notice that these components are slightly different based on what layout I've chosen.
- [00:38:46.720]And again, all this stuff is covered in CMS docs, what components you can use in what layouts.
- [00:38:52.260]Some things just don't look good in one column.
- [00:38:55.380]Likewise, some of the components just don't work.
- [00:38:59.660]Some things just don't look good if you try to put it in a four column.
- [00:39:02.540]But in this particular case, we're going to do a card.
- [00:39:04.860]And we will say, you know, learn about our department.
- [00:39:16.460]So again, we've got a link here.
- [00:39:20.580]We'll say about our department.
- [00:39:23.000]We've created a link to that page.
- [00:39:25.480]We'll fill these out so you can see what they look like.
- [00:39:28.260]We'll add an image here.
- [00:39:35.520]Oops.
- [00:39:37.540]And then we'll go ahead and choose lightest gray.
- [00:39:58.060]And add this block.
- [00:39:59.520]So we've got one card.
- [00:40:04.700]Just to make it balanced, let's add another card.
- [00:40:07.100]Our people.
- [00:40:12.360]And then, you know, we can say trainers.
- [00:40:18.460]Our trainers.
- [00:40:19.880]So we're creating a link to that page.
- [00:40:22.500]People overline.
- [00:40:25.800]Subhead.
- [00:40:29.880]And actually, I'm going to remove this link because I want to show you one thing here.
- [00:40:54.180]So.
- [00:40:55.160]I'm going to remove that link.
- [00:40:57.560]And then as I scroll down the page, you'll notice by removing the link from the headline, I now have the option to make a button link.
- [00:41:07.280]So let's say trainers, because that's what we're linking to, our trainers.
- [00:41:14.140]So not only do you have the ability to make a button link, but you also have the ability to make a button link.
- [00:41:25.140]So you have the ability within this new system to add different components, but the components themselves have different option display options.
- [00:41:33.640]So by not filling out this headline link and filling in this button link, you'll see, I'll show you here.
- [00:41:40.100]So rather than, so in this one, I filled out the headline link.
- [00:41:47.140]And so the headline is a link.
- [00:41:48.480]In this one, I did not fill it out, but the button is a link instead.
- [00:41:55.120]It's one component, but you can display it differently depending on what you fill out.
- [00:42:00.800]So if I were really building this site, I would make these the same.
- [00:42:06.220]I would make them both have buttons or make both of them with the headlines as links.
- [00:42:11.260]But for this particular case, I just kind of wanted to show you.
- [00:42:14.180]And that's the case with a lot of our components.
- [00:42:17.300]They have a bunch of different display options that you can choose to kind of build the site
- [00:42:21.900]that you think looks best for you.
- [00:42:25.100]So we have this front page, and let's just say, you know, maybe we want news and events
- [00:42:29.200]on here as well.
- [00:42:30.140]So we're going to come back into layout and come back down here, and we're going to add
- [00:42:38.160]a section, one column.
- [00:42:40.740]And let's just go ahead and add that.
- [00:42:47.520]So I'm going to come in here and add a component.
- [00:42:50.860]Again, I'm going to go to more.
- [00:42:52.160]We're going to add upcoming events.
- [00:42:55.080]So adding events is very easy to the new site.
- [00:43:00.120]All you need to do is add the link to your calendar in events.
- [00:43:06.920]And it will automatically pull those events in.
- [00:43:13.040]So I'm going to go ahead and add another section now,
- [00:43:16.260]and we're going to add a news.
- [00:43:17.760]So if you remember when I added the news item,
- [00:43:20.660]it was automatically,
- [00:43:25.060]pulling in the most recent news items to the bottom of the news item.
- [00:43:28.300]So maybe we want those to display on our front page as well.
- [00:43:31.160]So we're going to go ahead and add a component,
- [00:43:33.680]go more and click news aggregation.
- [00:43:37.580]And we'll say latest news.
- [00:43:43.780]And here's where you can choose how many you want.
- [00:43:46.920]I think four looks, I think four looks the best,
- [00:43:50.040]but that's kind of traditional.
- [00:43:51.460]It's just one row of four.
- [00:43:55.040]So it's pulling in those latest news items.
- [00:43:58.140]Let's click save, see what our page is looking like.
- [00:44:01.220]So now we kind of have our front page.
- [00:44:05.240]We've got our big hero.
- [00:44:06.380]We've got links for people to move
- [00:44:08.700]into different pages on our site.
- [00:44:10.560]Oh, you can see here, this one,
- [00:44:12.800]we need to maybe configure the section
- [00:44:14.700]and make it go edge to edge.
- [00:44:17.580]We could do that.
- [00:44:19.200]We could clean up a little bit more
- [00:44:20.400]of the vertical spacing here and there if we wanted to.
- [00:44:22.800]But overall, we've got, you know,
- [00:44:25.020]a pretty good looking front page to our site.
- [00:44:27.140]So say we like a couple things on this front page
- [00:44:31.200]and we want to use those on another page, you know,
- [00:44:36.260]but we don't want to just completely rebuild it.
- [00:44:38.100]Well, this replicate tab that I previously just mentioned,
- [00:44:43.940]if we click this and we click replicate,
- [00:44:47.340]boom, we have just duplicated our front page
- [00:44:55.000]and if we want to change the name of it,
- [00:44:56.860]you probably should change it right away
- [00:44:58.920]just so you don't have copies of the same thing running around.
- [00:45:02.540]We change it to academics, you know, we can come in here
- [00:45:06.460]and then very quickly, you know, you could come in to edit,
- [00:45:11.160]you could swap out the photo, you know,
- [00:45:15.020]maybe on your academics page, you don't want the upcoming news,
- [00:45:19.160]so you could remove this, you know, maybe you don't want,
- [00:45:24.980]latest news, so you remove that.
- [00:45:27.820]Maybe for academics, you want like a different image at the top
- [00:45:34.020]with different text, you know, so maybe you want to choose
- [00:45:36.840]something that has more students in it or something,
- [00:45:40.240]so you just come in here and so maybe choose this graduation, you know.
- [00:45:54.960]So, again, I'm not going to change everything, but, you know,
- [00:45:57.800]maybe very quickly by clicking duplicate or replicate, you know,
- [00:46:05.620]removing a few sections, changing a few things quick,
- [00:46:08.220]then all of a sudden you have another page
- [00:46:10.620]and you haven't had to rebuild it completely.
- [00:46:12.300]You have some other stuff that you can kind of change around.
- [00:46:16.200]That's really nice if you have, you know, some kind of top-level pages
- [00:46:21.900]on your site that all kind of have a similar structure.
- [00:46:24.940]But different content.
- [00:46:26.020]Once you build the first one, then all you need to do is click replicate,
- [00:46:29.100]swap out text and images, and you're done.
- [00:46:31.180]Rather than having to, like, rebuild every one from scratch.
- [00:46:33.740]It will save you a lot of time that way.
- [00:46:35.680]So this is kind of the basics of building a site.
- [00:46:40.000]I want to go through a couple more things before we get into the questions.
- [00:46:43.060]I see that there's quite a few chat things.
- [00:46:45.780]I assume they've been answered.
- [00:46:46.960]But if they haven't, we can kind of touch on them at the end.
- [00:46:49.380]So I very briefly touched on MediaLite.
- [00:46:54.920]So we're going to go ahead and go Content, Media.
- [00:46:57.540]So when I was prompted to add images both to components and to the builder pages themselves,
- [00:47:05.480]it opened up this thing called Media Library in kind of a modal window.
- [00:47:09.080]So by going to Content, Media, you essentially go to the same place.
- [00:47:15.020]We are in the Media Library here.
- [00:47:16.960]You can see this image that we've uploaded and all these images and files that we've uploaded in previous trainings.
- [00:47:24.900]Let's just go ahead and add another.
- [00:47:27.360]I'm going to show you the process for adding other types of media to Media Library.
- [00:47:32.840]So we're going to add a file.
- [00:47:34.360]We're going to go ahead and add this PDF.
- [00:47:40.560]We have this little checkbox that says, I have done due diligence to ensure that this file meets accessibility standards.
- [00:47:47.380]What does that mean?
- [00:47:49.040]Well, if you're uploading a PDF or a Word doc to your site,
- [00:47:54.880]there are some processes that you can go through to make sure that it is accessible to those with a screen reader or other assistive devices.
- [00:48:04.120]So, again, we have some documentation on how to do this at cms-docs.unl.edu.
- [00:48:11.680]But having said that, I would say that if there is content that you want your users to be able to see on your website,
- [00:48:21.560]it should be a web page on your site.
- [00:48:24.860]If you've ever tried to browse a PDF on your phone,
- [00:48:28.040]most of the time it is difficult, to put it lightly, and near impossible at other times.
- [00:48:38.320]So if you have content that you want to make sure that all of your users see,
- [00:48:43.500]again, I would say that it should be a web page.
- [00:48:46.400]Because if you look at the statistics of people who are coming to our website,
- [00:48:51.620]it is almost 50% mobile right now.
- [00:48:55.000]So, you know, if you have stuff in a PDF, that can be very, very frustrating to users
- [00:48:59.620]if you want them to see that content.
- [00:49:02.200]So tags, this works similar to how images is.
- [00:49:06.420]You know, you go kind of general to specific.
- [00:49:09.040]So, you know, this could be recruiting.
- [00:49:14.380]It is a recruiting event.
- [00:49:16.580]So you can see I'm creating that tag.
- [00:49:18.520]There was no recruiting event.
- [00:49:19.700]We could say flyer.
- [00:49:21.820]Again, there's not another one.
- [00:49:24.820]So maybe you have a PDF that's a print version of your website.
- [00:49:28.240]So maybe you want to call it, you know, printable version or something like that.
- [00:49:35.240]You know, maybe it's already a webpage, but you want a printable version for people to
- [00:49:39.200]download for some reason.
- [00:49:40.160]You know, that seems like a reasonable option.
- [00:49:42.300]We're going to save that.
- [00:49:44.040]Sorry, I jumped to another page really quick.
- [00:49:54.800]You can see here that it uploaded, and we can see this file in our media library now.
- [00:50:01.860]So likewise, you know, we're going to add a remote video for MediaHub this way.
- [00:50:07.680]So that's why I kind of opened up this other screen.
- [00:50:10.120]So this is pretty cool.
- [00:50:12.040]Let's say we want to add this image of this Rivian truck getting smashed into a barrier
- [00:50:19.420]to our site.
- [00:50:20.180]All we need to do is add that remote video.
- [00:50:24.780]We could say roadside safety.
- [00:50:30.180]We already have a tag for it.
- [00:50:31.160]Amazing.
- [00:50:31.440]Rivian, I don't know.
- [00:50:35.140]I want to get specific for the truck.
- [00:50:37.160]I think we had this tag in here because we'd actually put another video of them smashing
- [00:50:41.180]another truck on our site.
- [00:50:42.320]So we're going to click save.
- [00:50:44.760]So we can see these two things that we've added to the media library, and they're in
- [00:50:53.740]here alongside all of them.
- [00:50:54.760]And all of our other items, you know, if we want to search, we can search by both the
- [00:50:59.980]name or the tag to filter down through any of the items that we've added.
- [00:51:08.640]And I want to show you how to link to files too, because it's very easy.
- [00:51:14.740]It's kind of like linking to a page on your site.
- [00:51:19.040]So let's go in here to about our department.
- [00:51:22.880]So this is the...
- [00:51:24.740]This is the page we created.
- [00:51:25.520]So let's say we want to link to that PDF we uploaded.
- [00:51:28.320]We're going to select our text.
- [00:51:30.580]We're going to click this link button.
- [00:51:32.360]We know that it started like Army something, so we're going to start typing that.
- [00:51:37.740]And then it auto-completes.
- [00:51:39.960]We click it.
- [00:51:40.900]We click check.
- [00:51:42.020]Boom, we've created a link to that file.
- [00:51:44.600]Likewise, we want to add a video that we've uploaded.
- [00:51:48.620]So we're going to go ahead and click Media Library here.
- [00:51:51.340]And instead of image, we're going to...
- [00:51:54.720]Choose the Remote Video tab.
- [00:51:56.180]It's going to switch here.
- [00:52:03.140]Then we're going to choose this Midwest Roadside Safety Crash test.
- [00:52:09.180]Insert that.
- [00:52:10.240]And just like an image, once it's inserted,
- [00:52:13.780]we have the ability to kind of format what that video looks like.
- [00:52:17.740]Default is kind of full width.
- [00:52:21.660]Narrow is like half.
- [00:52:23.260]I think video looks good.
- [00:52:24.700]Big.
- [00:52:24.940]So we're going to go with default.
- [00:52:26.260]Again, you can kind of offset it.
- [00:52:28.620]You know, if you choose narrow, you can choose to offset that with the text.
- [00:52:33.620]In this particular case, there's no text to offset because we're below it all.
- [00:52:37.440]We're going to go big.
- [00:52:38.780]We'll click save.
- [00:52:40.400]And then we'll come back into our page.
- [00:52:46.860]So you can see here, we've got this huge full width video.
- [00:52:54.680]And then if you hover over this, you can see that we're linking to that document that we uploaded.
- [00:53:00.820]So that was just another brief rundown on media library.
- [00:53:05.160]There's a couple last things I want to touch on.
- [00:53:09.140]So first I want to touch on people.
- [00:53:12.740]So we can import people using either their username or just their name.
- [00:53:18.700]So let's go with Chrysler here.
- [00:53:24.660]We can search, import.
- [00:53:27.940]He already has access to this site.
- [00:53:32.680]You can click the people tab to see what people have access to your site.
- [00:53:37.320]And then the different access levels, I want to explain those a little bit.
- [00:53:41.940]I have the ability to kind of add a little bit different access levels to users than you will.
- [00:53:48.740]These are the three that we need to focus on.
- [00:53:51.780]And these are the three that anybody who's a site admin
- [00:53:54.640]will be able to add these roles.
- [00:53:56.580]So by default, when you request a site,
- [00:54:01.380]we've been giving you site admin access to your site.
- [00:54:05.060]So site admin, this person has the ability to add content, edit content,
- [00:54:13.260]delete content, and add new users to the site.
- [00:54:18.300]They also have the ability to go into their site settings and for,
- [00:54:24.620]whatever reason, if you need to change the name of your site, you can do that.
- [00:54:27.520]You can also add an affiliation and an affiliation URL.
- [00:54:31.780]And for whatever reason, if you need to change the front page of your website,
- [00:54:36.840]you can change that here.
- [00:54:38.180]So the site admin can do all those things.
- [00:54:41.660]Basically anything site related, they have the ability to do that.
- [00:54:46.400]An editor role is a step down from site admin.
- [00:54:50.400]So an editor can add,
- [00:54:54.600]add new content and they can edit content,
- [00:54:57.000]but they cannot delete content.
- [00:54:58.940]They cannot change any of the site configuration settings and they cannot
- [00:55:03.680]edit user permissions on the site.
- [00:55:08.640]So it's a good kind of step down level.
- [00:55:12.080]If you don't want anybody to accidentally delete content,
- [00:55:14.680]but you might want somebody to give you some help editing or creating new
- [00:55:18.520]content on the site.
- [00:55:19.340]So viewer is a new role that we've added just for in this new,
- [00:55:24.580]new system.
- [00:55:24.920]And this is sort of what we've been generally calling like the approver
- [00:55:28.860]role.
- [00:55:29.180]So the viewer role has only the ability to view content on the site.
- [00:55:37.880]They cannot add content.
- [00:55:41.160]They cannot edit content.
- [00:55:42.580]They cannot delete content.
- [00:55:43.800]They cannot add or remove users.
- [00:55:46.300]So what is the benefit of even having this role?
- [00:55:49.500]Well, a viewer let's just say you have your site.
- [00:55:54.560]And you are tasked with creating a little new section of your site.
- [00:56:00.700]That's three or four pages.
- [00:56:01.720]Well, you could create those pages.
- [00:56:04.300]And rather than making them live or published to the public, what you do is create those
- [00:56:11.920]pages and make them unpublished.
- [00:56:14.120]And then you or anybody else with any of the access roles, including viewer could view
- [00:56:23.000]those pages before they went live.
- [00:56:24.640]So this, again, I say viewer is kind of like the approver role.
- [00:56:27.760]Maybe you have a couple pages that you need to put up on your site that you don't want
- [00:56:31.900]anybody to see, but you need to get approval before they go live.
- [00:56:35.900]So you could create those pages, make them unpublished, send the links to a supervisor
- [00:56:42.620]or something who you gave your access role to, and then they could just view those pages
- [00:56:47.300]and give you a thumbs up or thumbs down.
- [00:56:49.000]So those are the kind of the different roles.
- [00:56:54.520]Levels of access that you can give people to the website.
- [00:56:59.420]So that's kind of everything about the website itself.
- [00:57:02.560]I want to touch on one more thing really briefly before we go to questions.
- [00:57:06.300]So what are kind of the steps in doing this?
- [00:57:11.500]So if you come to cms.unl.edu, we have these three boxes.
- [00:57:17.220]So we have get started.
- [00:57:18.900]So you've obviously signed up for a training because that's what this is right now.
- [00:57:22.900]You've attended a training.
- [00:57:24.500]You are here.
- [00:57:26.620]So the second step would be to request a site and start building.
- [00:57:30.920]So you can request a site either here in this box, or up in the navigation, you can request
- [00:57:35.840]a site here.
- [00:57:36.860]So when you request a site, then we get notice and then we will spin up a new site for you.
- [00:57:44.760]And here's documentation about how to start building.
- [00:57:47.840]When you spin up a site, I will give you access to our web developer network.
- [00:57:54.480]Slack channel where there's 350 people on there.
- [00:57:58.500]And there's a lot of people, you know, if you run into an issue, it's a good place to
- [00:58:02.560]ask because a lot of people might have already had the same issue.
- [00:58:06.880]People are helpful if you run into an issue.
- [00:58:08.840]Maybe you're thinking about some content you need to translate to the new system.
- [00:58:13.460]People might have good ideas about how to do that there.
- [00:58:16.700]So request a site and start building.
- [00:58:18.160]If you haven't done this yet, I stress to you just get started.
- [00:58:22.700]So the final part.
- [00:58:24.460]Part of that step is you've built your site is ready to go.
- [00:58:31.300]Then you would click this form here and you'd basically just say, Hey, my new site is done.
- [00:58:37.300]I want my subdomain to switch to point to the new site.
- [00:58:41.140]So maybe you were at, I don't know, entomology.unl.edu and your new site is ready in the new system
- [00:58:48.780]and you want entomology.unl.edu to point at the new site instead of the old site.
- [00:58:53.440]Well, you fill out this form.
- [00:58:54.920]You say that this is a replacing site.
- [00:58:57.020]You put your new site, your subdomain in here
- [00:59:01.540]and what day you'd like it to go public and fill it out.
- [00:59:04.380]And then we roll through those a couple of times a week and make them live.
- [00:59:08.220]And that's kind of the final step in making your site live.
- [00:59:11.480]So that's kind of the basics on the CMS and the basics of, you know,
- [00:59:18.180]the steps of going live in the new system.
- [00:59:20.820]So I will open the floor to questions.
- [00:59:24.160]We have those now.
- [00:59:25.080]It looks like most of them have been answered.
- [00:59:29.420]So let's see here.
- [00:59:32.760]I'll try to answer a couple of these that maybe haven't been answered.
- [00:59:39.800]One is, is there a way to pull in an RSS feed?
- [00:59:43.680]The only way to pull in an RSS feed now is, it's not really an RSS feed,
- [00:59:51.920]but there is a way to subscribe.
- [00:59:53.880]To Nebraska Today to pull in news stories automatically to your site.
- [00:59:59.660]So you can basically subscribe to tags within Nebraska Today
- [01:00:04.260]and pull in news items to your site.
- [01:00:06.140]On CMS Docs, there is a, so there's this intro training video that you're doing now.
- [01:00:14.760]There's a kind of an advanced level training
- [01:00:16.780]that shows how to subscribe to those tags and pull those sites down.
- [01:00:20.840]There's also documentation on how to do that on there.
- [01:00:23.600]So another question is, what if we already-
- [01:00:30.300]Oh, can I, hi, can I tell you what I'm referring to with that RSS feed?
- [01:00:35.420]I work in career services and we can build a feed in Handshake
- [01:00:40.960]and then Handshake gives us a URL.
- [01:00:44.300]And I know that on the current site,
- [01:00:47.700]there's a place where featured jobs from Handshake
- [01:00:53.320]are showing up.
- [01:00:54.460]So that's what I'm trying to replicate.
- [01:00:56.220]We worked with careers to rebuild that on their site.
- [01:01:01.340]I think their site's going live tomorrow or today.
- [01:01:04.180]Well, I'm in the Kasner Kerr Center,
- [01:01:07.720]so I want to have that on our Kasner website.
- [01:01:09.900]Do what they're doing, but on our Kasner site.
- [01:01:12.360]Okay.
- [01:01:13.520]Reach out to me.
- [01:01:17.940]They actually changed a lot about how they're doing
- [01:01:23.040]interaction with Handshake.
- [01:01:24.320]They were replicating all those jobs on their site,
- [01:01:27.980]and they decided that that just wasn't ultimately
- [01:01:31.340]the greatest for their site.
- [01:01:34.100]They actually slimmed it down,
- [01:01:35.780]and they're just pulling a selection of jobs,
- [01:01:37.620]and they're just linking directly to Handshake.
- [01:01:39.440]Since people can't apply from the career services site,
- [01:01:44.400]they actually changed that quite a bit.
- [01:01:46.740]You can reach out to me, and I can talk to you
- [01:01:48.500]about what we did with career services,
- [01:01:50.740]but yeah, they really changed.
- [01:01:52.760]Their interaction with Handshake.
- [01:01:54.420]Okay, thank you.
- [01:01:56.680]Okay, so Elise is asking,
- [01:01:59.920]what if we already had a site?
- [01:02:01.700]Is there a way to edit the existing one?
- [01:02:03.600]So are you referring to,
- [01:02:06.320]you already have a site in the new system?
- [01:02:09.400]I guess I don't maybe quite understand the question.
- [01:02:12.900]I don't believe we have a site in the new system.
- [01:02:16.440]I'm like the new president of our organization this year,
- [01:02:20.380]and I've never been trained on,
- [01:02:22.480]what we've added to the website.
- [01:02:24.140]I don't think it's been touched in the past,
- [01:02:26.160]like three years or so.
- [01:02:27.500]Okay. Is it a student organization?
- [01:02:29.080]Yes.
- [01:02:30.020]Okay. If you want to send me an email,
- [01:02:33.360]there are a few that we've recreated.
- [01:02:36.140]I knew a few student organizations
- [01:02:38.020]that we've recreated in this new site
- [01:02:39.920]and given people access to.
- [01:02:41.260]But if you need a new one created,
- [01:02:43.500]you can either reach out to me first
- [01:02:46.440]and I can tell you whether it's created.
- [01:02:48.020]And then if not,
- [01:02:49.940]I'll just have you fill out that form.
- [01:02:51.520]So we have it on the
- [01:02:52.200]record.
- [01:02:52.460]So, okay.
- [01:02:53.440]Sounds good.
- [01:02:54.120]Thanks.
- [01:02:54.420]All right.
- [01:02:54.680]Where can we find the recorded Zoom video?
- [01:02:57.640]So I will send a recording of this around to everybody
- [01:03:01.940]later today once it's uploaded.
- [01:03:04.040]On CMS Docs,
- [01:03:06.840]there is a recording of a previous session
- [01:03:09.100]that's almost exactly like this.
- [01:03:10.880]I've kind of been following the same structure now
- [01:03:13.320]for a couple of months and gotten into a routine.
- [01:03:16.160]So like I said,
- [01:03:18.800]there's an introductory video
- [01:03:20.560]that's almost exactly like
- [01:03:21.920]the one we did this morning,
- [01:03:23.020]plus a slightly more advanced one
- [01:03:25.700]on the CMS Docs website.
- [01:03:27.840]So you can go there if you want to watch that,
- [01:03:30.300]or I'll send this one around later.
- [01:03:32.720]So yeah, there's that one.
- [01:03:35.420]For trainers,
- [01:03:36.940]how do I add individuals
- [01:03:37.920]who are not affiliated with UNL?
- [01:03:39.480]We do not have the ability
- [01:03:41.960]to add editors from outside UNL
- [01:03:47.820]into the system.
- [01:03:51.640]You might be able to work with somebody
- [01:03:53.220]to do a sponsored account
- [01:03:54.620]and get them an access to the site,
- [01:03:57.640]but I would have to look into that.
- [01:03:59.520]Aaron, they don't need access to the site.
- [01:04:01.820]They just, I just need to list their information,
- [01:04:03.680]like their name and contact and all that.
- [01:04:06.440]How would I, what's the best way?
- [01:04:08.180]Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- [01:04:08.780]So when I filled out that person,
- [01:04:10.940]when I filled out the person content type
- [01:04:17.020]when I was building that,
- [01:04:18.180]rather than filling out the,
- [01:04:21.360]UNL directory reference,
- [01:04:22.960]just open the little dropdown that says directory overrides.
- [01:04:27.800]Don't even fill out the UNL directory thing.
- [01:04:30.240]Just fill in the fields on the directory overrides
- [01:04:33.160]and you can put whatever you want in there
- [01:04:34.780]and it'll just show up like the same way, basically.
- [01:04:38.000]If that makes sense.
- [01:04:40.320]Yep, no, it does.
- [01:04:41.540]Thank you.
- [01:04:41.900]Yep, yep.
- [01:04:42.460]You can just fill out those individual fields
- [01:04:44.000]and it'll show up formatted the same
- [01:04:46.920]as if it was pulling from directory.
- [01:04:48.180]So how to do,
- [01:04:51.280]calendar of events.
- [01:04:52.120]So before I,
- [01:04:54.800]calendar of events,
- [01:04:56.620]I would want to make sure
- [01:04:57.500]that there's not already an existing one
- [01:04:59.380]for whatever department or unit that you're in.
- [01:05:03.520]If there is an existing one,
- [01:05:05.120]I would just want to make sure
- [01:05:05.940]that you already got access to that.
- [01:05:07.500]It's basically at events.unl.edu.
- [01:05:10.740]If you want to let me know
- [01:05:12.960]the name of your organization,
- [01:05:14.040]we can kind of look through
- [01:05:15.340]and find out whether there's already
- [01:05:18.620]an events calendar.
- [01:05:21.200]And creating events
- [01:05:22.740]is pretty self-explanatory.
- [01:05:24.360]Once you're in there,
- [01:05:26.520]creating events is really easy.
- [01:05:28.680]And then obviously pulling them
- [01:05:30.260]to your website is how I showed
- [01:05:32.760]in the training video.
- [01:05:34.620]So it's pretty easy to get going in there.
- [01:05:39.720]If you want to send me a message directly,
- [01:05:41.540]we can look and see
- [01:05:43.260]if your organization or unit
- [01:05:45.840]is already has a calendar instance.
- [01:05:47.600]If they do, then we'll get you added to it.
- [01:05:49.420]And then you can go from there
- [01:05:51.120]to there.
- [01:05:55.060]So another question along with what Elise asked,
- [01:05:57.780]if there's a current site,
- [01:05:58.780]is there no transferability?
- [01:06:01.660]So we do not have --
- [01:06:05.280]so this is kind of the first really big move
- [01:06:08.980]we've made in over a decade now.
- [01:06:13.380]And because the structure of the CMS system
- [01:06:16.240]is so much different,
- [01:06:19.300]really you have
- [01:06:21.040]to, you know, any page that you want into the new system,
- [01:06:24.660]it really does have to be rebuilt
- [01:06:27.240]just because the systems are so different.
- [01:06:29.120]There's no way to say
- [01:06:30.820]this little specific thing goes in this specific thing
- [01:06:33.080]when the old system is just all this raw HTML
- [01:06:37.040]and the new system is these more specific components.
- [01:06:40.860]So along the same lines, I would say,
- [01:06:44.660]rather than thinking about,
- [01:06:46.040]oh, I have to move every single page on your site,
- [01:06:49.620]what I would think about is
- [01:06:50.960]first of all, look at your old site
- [01:06:54.120]with a very close eye and say,
- [01:06:58.280]what's the most important stuff I need to move over?
- [01:07:02.140]Because it's like when you move
- [01:07:05.560]from one house to another or one apartment to another,
- [01:07:08.760]you don't take everything.
- [01:07:10.840]It's like all these sites have grown so organically
- [01:07:14.820]over the course of the past 15 years,
- [01:07:16.520]I'm completely guilty of it.
- [01:07:17.740]I'll just create a new page here and a new page there.
- [01:07:20.880]You know what, you have a hundred or more pages
- [01:07:23.920]and some of which are just totally irrelevant.
- [01:07:26.620]So I would say the first thing to do
- [01:07:28.100]is a content inventory on your site
- [01:07:30.560]before you even start moving things over,
- [01:07:33.220]just to kind of come up with what is the most essential stuff
- [01:07:36.240]that needs to be moved.
- [01:07:37.440]- Along with that, can I ask,
- [01:07:40.940]is there guidance to like,
- [01:07:42.940]how does somebody who has never done this,
- [01:07:47.160]like, is there like a paper template
- [01:07:49.260]that I can use to design
- [01:07:50.800]like, okay, this is what I want on the main page
- [01:07:55.260]and then like breaking it down into different pages.
- [01:07:59.700]So I have a plan, like a template or a plan
- [01:08:02.980]before I actually start working on building a site.
- [01:08:06.580]Like the flow of information, you know,
- [01:08:12.560]how many clicks does a person have to use
- [01:08:14.500]to get to a particular thing?
- [01:08:15.920]We know that that needs to be minimal.
- [01:08:18.460]Is there best practice?
- [01:08:19.500]Is there any help with best practice?
- [01:08:20.720]Is there any practice on that?
- [01:08:22.420]- I don't know that we have any documentation on it.
- [01:08:25.320]I kind of, we kind of, in that regard,
- [01:08:29.340]it's hard because we kind of developed the system
- [01:08:34.340]for building it and everybody out there
- [01:08:37.400]is kind of like the content experts
- [01:08:39.240]in their particular area.
- [01:08:40.520]So in that regards, we would kind of leave it
- [01:08:44.280]to the content experts in their area to determine,
- [01:08:48.400]okay, this is the primary navigation
- [01:08:50.640]and this is the secondary navigation, right?
- [01:08:51.700]We've kind of always left it up to people like,
- [01:08:53.700]this is the primary navigation
- [01:08:55.460]and then these are the secondary navigation
- [01:08:58.420]that fall underneath that.
- [01:08:59.960]So I don't know that we have any guidance on structure
- [01:09:04.620]or the best way to kind of set up things like that,
- [01:09:09.620]but the onboarding site,
- [01:09:14.740]that's kind of like a really basic way of saying,
- [01:09:18.480]here's a splash page,
- [01:09:20.560]here's an about page,
- [01:09:22.060]here's our people.
- [01:09:23.300]If it's like an academic unit,
- [01:09:26.680]you'd probably wanna have,
- [01:09:27.940]if you have just undergraduate degrees,
- [01:09:30.940]you'd list the degrees,
- [01:09:31.900]or if you have graduate degrees,
- [01:09:33.800]you'd list those,
- [01:09:34.860]you'd have obviously like contact information
- [01:09:37.160]for anybody who wants to apply or ask questions
- [01:09:39.420]and any research that's being done
- [01:09:43.480]or extension work that's being done.
- [01:09:46.960]So things like that.
- [01:09:48.440]Those are all kind of,
- [01:09:50.480]kind of top line navigation.
- [01:09:52.380]I guess if, you know, if you're,
- [01:09:55.440]are you in extension specifically?
- [01:09:57.540]To answer your question a little more,
- [01:10:00.140]you answered, asked one in the chat.
- [01:10:02.000]So the timeline for extension,
- [01:10:06.520]I would say that would be a more specific question
- [01:10:09.700]for Angie Rushman or David Hofeck.
- [01:10:14.700]I know David Hofeck's out until tomorrow, maybe.
- [01:10:20.400]They probably would have a better timeline on extension.
- [01:10:24.420]And I think they'll probably,
- [01:10:25.900]they might even have like a template for like a county,
- [01:10:29.680]what a county extension sites would look like.
- [01:10:32.460]It's probably gonna look very similar to how it does now.
- [01:10:35.160]It's gonna have events and different information
- [01:10:38.980]that you can get at that county extension office.
- [01:10:41.480]So they would be your best bet
- [01:10:43.880]in terms of content and structure on that.
- [01:10:46.260]- Okay, thank you.
- [01:10:50.320]All right, are there any other questions?
- [01:10:56.800]Feel free to ask them, just ask them or drop them in chat.
- [01:11:04.200]If you do,
- [01:11:20.240]mess around on the Sandbox site, people see it,
- [01:11:22.260]but like, honestly, it doesn't really matter.
- [01:11:25.580]That's kind of what the site's built for
- [01:11:28.600]is just to kind of play around on it.
- [01:11:30.660]So, you know, everybody who's taken the training
- [01:11:34.080]has access to it, but for the most part,
- [01:11:36.840]I think people are requesting sites
- [01:11:38.380]and then they're building within those specific sites
- [01:11:41.240]that we've built for people.
- [01:11:42.120]So I would say have at it, go ahead,
- [01:11:45.700]mess around on that site if that's what it's for, so.
- [01:11:50.160]When can we start rebuilding our pages?
- [01:11:52.160]Right now, people are building sites.
- [01:11:54.840]We have 300 sites live and we have,
- [01:11:59.360]I think 550 of them in production right now.
- [01:12:03.220]So I would say right now, if you haven't requested a site,
- [01:12:07.540]do it and I'll get it fired up for you
- [01:12:09.960]and you can start building.
- [01:12:20.080]Are there any other questions?
- [01:12:27.700]Again, I would say, don't worry about the sandbox.
- [01:12:32.240]Somebody put that chicken on the front page.
- [01:12:34.720]That was like, not even us.
- [01:12:36.200]That was like somebody who took the training
- [01:12:38.100]and just added a chicken to the front page.
- [01:12:40.480]And we're like, whatever, it's a sandbox site.
- [01:12:43.140]So don't worry about that site.
- [01:12:45.160]Just feel free to add as many pages as you want.
- [01:12:50.000]All right.
- [01:12:54.600]Any other questions before we end this for today?
- [01:12:58.220]Thank you.
- [01:13:00.200]Thank you very much for attending, everybody.
- [01:13:02.580]And like I said, I'll send a recording around.
- [01:13:06.040]It'll probably be early afternoon
- [01:13:07.400]once it's encoded and everything.
- [01:13:08.740]So thanks a lot and have a good rest of your day.
