- [00:00:00.000]Hi, I'm Duarte Diaz, Extension Specialist from the University of Arizona, and today
- [00:00:09.360]I'm here to talk about the negative consequences of improper silage fermentation.
- [00:00:16.420]One of the key things to consider on this topic is that as soon as we harvest these
- [00:00:21.200]plant materials, we are competing against time and the environment because the plant
- [00:00:25.880]wants to naturally start the decomposition material.
- [00:00:30.040]So in essence, the process of creating a silage is a process to try to prolong the life and
- [00:00:37.120]the utility of this material, at the same time maintaining the quality of this product.
- [00:00:43.560]So it would be comparable to putting a food product in the refrigerator to keep it stable
- [00:00:48.700]so that you can eat it for a longer period of time.
- [00:00:51.640]But as I said before, there is a constant battle between
- [00:00:55.840]the plants' needs to go into this decomposition process and our attempt to try to preserve
- [00:01:02.680]it.
- [00:01:03.680]And that's why the processes associated with producing silage can also be similar to those
- [00:01:10.080]that are required for the composition, with one thing being key, the important is the
- [00:01:14.840]presence or absence of oxygen.
- [00:01:17.600]In our preparation of silage, we're keenly trying to exclude
- [00:01:21.180]from that environment in order to have a proper fermentation process. When oxygen
- [00:01:26.990]is involved in the process we can have a cascade of events that start from the
- [00:01:31.990]production of yeast, growth of mold, and other microbial components. This can
- [00:01:38.870]offset by the production of some detrimental compounds including
- [00:01:42.930]mycotoxins which can be harmful to the animal health and to the quality of that
- [00:01:47.350]feedstuff. So in summary what we wanted, what we discussed today was we were
- [00:01:52.990]trying to be cognizant that everything that we do in the
- [00:01:57.250]preparation of the silage pit is with the goal of maintaining the
- [00:02:02.670]overall quality of this feedstuff and the key point in here is to try to
- [00:02:07.450]prevent the inclusion of oxygen into the process to stabilize. Once this process
- [00:02:12.950]becomes unstable we can have this microbial growth that can lead to a lot
- [00:02:17.350]of problems on long term. So in conclusion, prevention is really the key
- [00:02:23.830]to maintaining quality in the silage pit. Doing all the standard
- [00:02:29.110]management practices to create a good quality silage will prevent all these
- [00:02:34.110]potential negative impacts on the overall silage quality.
- [00:02:39.950]Thank you.
