- [00:00:39.960]Carson Fischer: A little while, and you may be the only one. Then you can talk about you specifically. Yeah, what's your name? I'm Carson. I'm an advisor. And I also teach
- [00:00:55.640]Carson Fischer: Pre help class for undergrad students. So yeah, what is your field physical therapy? Yeah.
- [00:01:04.140]Carson Fischer: variable.
- [00:01:06.090]Carson Fischer: Very cool. Well, I actually also recently took the jury. So have any specific questions. I took it this fall, and it is a little different. Yeah, they did so. It is quite a bit shorter. They still visit us 4 h, but I
- [00:01:23.700]Carson Fischer: I did the writing section a little bit quicker and like support the math, and so I thought it was just like a little longer than 3 lot better than forward. Yeah.
- [00:01:33.630]Carson Fischer: Hi
- [00:01:35.060]Carson Fischer: makes you to figure out the the scan working. No, it's Congress. Okay.
- [00:01:43.920]Carson Fischer: what's your name? Jessie? Jesse? Nice. Jesse.
- [00:01:47.770]Carson Fischer: Okay, well, I will be talking, Mike, do you guys hear that?
- [00:01:52.790]Carson Fischer: Okay, it's I hope it's not too loud. It's because I am supporting this presentation. So for any students who aren't
- [00:02:23.870]Carson Fischer: So I'm just working that way because things are.
- [00:02:28.570]Carson Fischer: you know.
- [00:02:41.050]may have a future like
- [00:02:43.070]Carson Fischer: about the gre. Thanks for coming. I'm Carson. I'm an advisor in the explore center, and then I also teach the intro to health.
- [00:02:51.080]for you know, maybe
- [00:02:53.060]Carson Fischer: people that we knew were younger and decided.
- [00:02:57.190]Carson Fischer: So have you guys do have a pretty good understanding of what the Jerry is.
- [00:03:01.850]Carson Fischer: Yes, and I was just telling Barrett that I actually took it. So if you have any specific questions. I took it in this fall this fall about like October, and it was a little bit shorter. So they do list still 4 h on the website. But I thought it was a little bit longer than 3.
- [00:03:23.880]Carson Fischer: So that's that's a good thing. It used to be like.
- [00:03:28.150]Carson Fischer: okay, so this is just an intro to the grere kind of a timeline for you guys both being Pt students,
- [00:03:36.170]Carson Fischer: and then for any free health areas or anyone just wanting to go into a grad program, a lot of them are going to require this. So we can talk about the format. What you know, a realistic question looks like and then I also have you guys want to like. Look at it.
- [00:03:56.220]Carson Fischer: So they have. I got this like on ebay, and they have this I got like a year old one. And they have a lot of free resources on line, too, which I found to be helpful. So
- [00:04:11.800]Carson Fischer: yeah, through the Academy you could actually take a couple free, entire series, and I did that. I would suggest doing that a couple of times before you do it. So
- [00:04:23.820]Carson Fischer: I'll talk about how to prepare all that good stuff.
- [00:04:26.880]Carson Fischer: and then through Kaplan and Khan those are the 2 biggest ones, I think. Those you can even do like a free question of the day, and it's kind of just like nice to get you to start studying, and you'll be like, oh, the verbal reasoning is kind of odd. It's similar to like.
- [00:04:43.670]Carson Fischer: you know, seeing how a standardized test is structured and practicing that so like we said, the jury's required for entrance to schools for, like, pt, yeah. Ot. Dietetics. It's also genetic counseling required.
- [00:05:01.320]Carson Fischer: and then public health
- [00:05:03.300]Carson Fischer: and any grad program. So a Phd program master's degree.
- [00:05:09.100]Carson Fischer: So the biggest thing, you guys. But it really does depend on the school. So some schools are doing away with it. Some are not. So just look into your school and like what they require. Do you guys know what you want? Supply?
- [00:05:30.140]Carson Fischer: Same with you without like a lot of but we are still keeping it so. But it'll be worth it, and it's just kind of like a month you have to get over, you know, in your application process.
- [00:05:45.880]Carson Fischer: So, yes, do your research make sure that the programs you're clients who require it? So what do you guys think is your event? Do you have an idea. Yes.
- [00:05:57.750]Carson Fischer: like, I don't know if you can just like function in grad school. I guess I don't know. That's a really that's a really good guess is basically just testing
- [00:06:07.710]Carson Fischer: how how you are as a student, how you think where you score in math. You know, there's verbal reasoning.
- [00:06:19.060]Carson Fischer: So yeah, just to make sure you're established program.
- [00:06:24.650]Carson Fischer: So an intro, yes, like, I said, if there's 3 sections. So this is quantitative reasoning, that is the math
- [00:06:32.400]Carson Fischer: and when you're studying you'll go through all the different sections. If you guys have any specific questions. I have a lot of websites that you can attend all 3 sessions that are on zoom program like the prep course programs. And you can do that too. So if you're like, I'm a terrible test taker. I wanna pay. They're just they're pretty.
- [00:07:00.530]Carson Fischer: Consider, you know, like $1,000. Sometimes verbal reasoning. That is the
- [00:07:08.010]Carson Fischer: English kind of department. A lot of vocabulary. So I would even suggest, this is random. But like during the word of the day on web solution, you have if you guys like to read reading really high quality
- [00:07:24.400]Carson Fischer: books that just like it's bizarre vocabulary. So that is kind of interesting. So I'll show you an example of like what a question would look like. And then the analytical Friday.
- [00:07:37.030]Carson Fischer: there will be 2 writing sections and their timed and they'll just give you a prompt. So
- [00:07:45.030]Carson Fischer: all that good stuff
- [00:07:47.340]Carson Fischer: and we talked about we should take it so an important note. The scores are valid for 5 years. So let's say you take it, and you know you change your course of direction. You still have that Jerry score to 5 years.
- [00:08:02.300]Carson Fischer: And yeah, we kind of hit on this before taking it. We'll talk about the timeline of when to start studying with the gre. So
- [00:08:12.890]Carson Fischer: Hi, welcome. What's your name?
- [00:08:29.650]Carson Fischer: Yeah. So we're talking about the gre, what help tracks require the gre. So they don't require for demo. We'll take the vat, obviously. And so we have some Pt students in here. And I recently took it from undergrad program. So we'll go over kind of like what the structure of the exam is. So how much do you guys think it costs? Take them.
- [00:08:55.120]Carson Fischer: Give any guesses.
- [00:08:56.960]Carson Fischer: Yeah, it's kind of around there. After fees. I think it's closer to 300. This is a little outdated. They kind of advertise it closer to 220, but with fees and taking it in person. It's kind of around 250 to 300 range.
- [00:09:15.800]Carson Fischer: I strongly encourage to take it in person. So this Linkedin location, it's right off of Cheney. If you guys know where that is. That is where I took it.
- [00:09:27.060]Carson Fischer: they do offer online. But I have just heard students have really terrible experiences with this similar to like 4 Lsat experiences where they're taking it online. Something goes wrong, you know where in Nebraska it's like snowing when you're taking it, or your Wi-fi goes out.
- [00:09:45.800]Carson Fischer: You know the account is your score. They could not refund you the money something like that, and
- [00:09:51.580]Carson Fischer: you know you'll probably better so. Yeah, if you take it in this testing center in Omaha Lincoln, wherever or you can also take it at home. And a cool thing is that if you qualify for something like this fee reduction program you can definitely apply for that. So then it would only be 100 bucks.
- [00:10:12.550]Carson Fischer: So that's all kind of like personal depending on your own circumstances. But I think that's really cool to know. So if you have questions about that, please like talk to an advisor.
- [00:10:46.420]Carson Fischer: Just this section. And there's people waiting. Everyone's taking different tests. So some people like
- [00:10:54.900]Carson Fischer: some people are taking gre. Some people are taking the Lsat at things like that. So
- [00:11:03.900]Carson Fischer: they are pretty specific, and you can't take anything in with you, not even a water pamp on jewelry. So like you were in hoops, they make you take them out just because there's a million ways to cheat now. And so they're really strict
- [00:11:19.740]Carson Fischer: and I did ask if you have to go to the bathroom. You do just you scan in for security, and then you have a locker once you're in there, and you would just scan out for the bathroom. But the test does not pause. So
- [00:11:35.110]Carson Fischer: yeah, I just held the bathroom 3 and a half hours. No, there's a calculator on the screen where they're teaching you like the quantitative reasoning section.
- [00:11:55.200]Carson Fischer: They will explain that the calculator kind of. It's like a scheme to maybe waste time. So there's not gonna like if there's huge math, obviously use it. But a lot of it is
- [00:12:06.990]Carson Fischer: to me just more tricky thing to my college algebra. A lot of statistics. So definitely taken for a long time.
- [00:12:16.960]Carson Fischer: but yeah, really quiet.
- [00:12:22.510]Carson Fischer: So a lot smaller.
- [00:12:26.780]Carson Fischer: a lot smaller and more privacy, I would say.
- [00:12:30.100]Carson Fischer: Yeah. should I ask? I'm sorry. Yeah. What professions?
- [00:12:36.320]Carson Fischer: Yes, we talked about this. We'll just go back for you. Okay.
- [00:12:40.680]Carson Fischer: so for pre health, PA, PT. Occupational therapy, dietetics masters. Your Phd. In public health. Genetic counseling also requires it.
- [00:12:51.790]Carson Fischer: and a big piece is that it really depends on the school. So maybe the school does not require anymore. And that's where you want to go is really important.
- [00:13:04.460]Carson Fischer: okay, so the timeline. You
- [00:13:09.840]Carson Fischer: really want to kind of think about taking it between March and May.
- [00:13:13.510]Carson Fischer: Especially with areas of like summer app application submission. So do you guys know when you guys are applying? Yeah, thank. So,
- [00:13:27.490]Carson Fischer: a nice thing to note is that you can retake the exam once every 21 days.
- [00:13:34.050]Carson Fischer: and you can take it up to 5 times in a 12 month period. Maybe you had to. So if you got your score back, and you're like, Oh, my gosh! I hate this in here kind of in timefront. You can retake it right before you apply.
- [00:13:49.110]Carson Fischer: and when you are taking the exam
- [00:13:52.510]Carson Fischer: at the end they will ask you 5 schools they send it to. So I was kind of confused by this. My, no one tells you going in. So at the end, you literally enter the school. You enter program like for PA schools website, that is like the PA application website. They, the schools, have a code that you have to enter.
- [00:14:16.710]Carson Fischer: So research this beforehand, like, I'm not. I'm not specifically sure how physical therapy schools do it, but you may, and if you don't have 5 schools, you might as well enter 5. So if you were like, have a dream school.
- [00:14:35.150]Carson Fischer: Enter it. That's they give you 5 for you pay then the additional costs for more than 5.
- [00:14:44.050]Carson Fischer: How long will it take you to prepare? So the big thing is the semester. We take it. You kind of want to move.
- [00:14:50.990]Carson Fischer: Maybe you want to delo your courseword to send a big chunk of your time studying this test score is important for your application.
- [00:15:02.320]Carson Fischer: and a lot of times it is going back to some of that map, maybe, that you haven't seen in a while.
- [00:15:08.100]Carson Fischer: So the free planning is important. What courses am I taking that semester? I also have to put a lot of my time into the gre.
- [00:15:18.250]Carson Fischer: And we talked about where you can take the test.
- [00:15:21.790]Carson Fischer: So there are sign updates. And you said, you just signed up. Yeah.
- [00:15:47.960]Carson Fischer: yeah, it really depends the time of year you're taking it. And if dates aren't showing up just because those dates are full. So
- [00:15:57.010]Carson Fischer: you yeah, it's not like Omaha super far. So if you had to. But it's nice to like so as well. But biggest thing is, you do have to sign up, I think, at least 2 days in advance, but I would suggest doing it many, many weeks in advance.
- [00:16:12.800]Carson Fischer: So this is the registration piece. Yeah, must 2 days prior to your preferred test date.
- [00:16:19.420]Carson Fischer: But if you do the test at home, option you do have like a 24 h option.
- [00:16:26.360]Carson Fischer: are available on first come first. Serve basis. So like Barrett said, if those aren't showing up those dates, then they're either not open or they're just full.
- [00:16:39.010]Carson Fischer: You guys have any questions about this section.
- [00:16:44.230]Carson Fischer: It is important in part where, when selecting the test date.
- [00:16:47.800]Carson Fischer: it will take a little bit of time to process that and be sent to the school. So if you are really close to your application, let's not schedule it for a week before the due date. Okay, it takes 10 to 15 days for official scores to be sent. So that is a big thing. When you're kind of planning out the timeline, give yourself
- [00:17:09.210]Carson Fischer: a lot of times where it's not a stressful process.
- [00:17:15.200]Carson Fischer: and you can also cancel just a little bit.
- [00:17:17.349]Carson Fischer: So let's say you take it, and
- [00:17:22.060]Carson Fischer: you can cancel that but once you take it, that attempt is included in your 5 attempts per year.
- [00:17:33.500]Carson Fischer: So how is it scored? The scoring scale is divided between the 3 sections. So the verbal reasoning parts. And it is okay. I do want to know. It is going to be like in random order. So what I was thinking practice exams. You know, they had their random order, and then, on the test date that order was random as well.
- [00:17:56.660]Carson Fischer: So you will have a writing section. and that is scored from a 0 to 6 scoring scale. I think the 5 or 6 is what
- [00:18:09.280]Carson Fischer: look, look, look up your specific schools, and they may list their required source.
- [00:18:14.750]Carson Fischer: And it would probably vary on the quantitative reasoning is the math, and like heavy stats. Section. So that is then this 1 30 to 170
- [00:18:25.810]Carson Fischer: increment system.
- [00:18:27.450]Carson Fischer: And then your verbal reasoning is the same. 1 30 to 170. So this is kind of a mean score. it's a little. It's a little old, but
- [00:18:39.720]Carson Fischer: that's something good to go off of.
- [00:18:45.670]Carson Fischer: and in your writing an average of a human raider, a errator or scoring section.
- [00:18:52.660]Carson Fischer: So
- [00:18:55.450]Carson Fischer: this is, you have 4 free score recipients. Maybe it has changed. When I took in the fall it was 5. So yeah, I guess, looking that up, it made it may change like by the year.
- [00:19:11.990]Carson Fischer: Schools and programs will not see any scores that you choose not to report So if you really hate your score, you can choose to not report it? But it does count as an attempt.
- [00:19:27.030]Carson Fischer: I heard. Can you like submit? Your verbal is monitored, but, like the writing, is that like an option. Or do you have to reach the whole? That's a good question.
- [00:19:38.910]Carson Fischer: because that is really dependent on the school. So I know, like for grad programs. I was just talking to a Phd program, and they were like, Nope, you have to retake all of it.
- [00:19:52.240]Carson Fischer: So
- [00:19:53.320]Carson Fischer: II would like really research that and see what requires.
- [00:19:58.570]Carson Fischer: are you?
- [00:19:59.720]Carson Fischer: Yeah, are you? Are you guys worried about? Or you feel strongest?
- [00:20:06.140]Carson Fischer: How do they grade the right inception
- [00:20:25.960]Carson Fischer: in here. There should be some writing prompts.
- [00:20:29.720]Carson Fischer: they're really just seeing how thorough
- [00:20:33.860]Carson Fischer: are you writing? The biggest thing is for these programs. You know, you guys are with the elite students. So they want to make sure.
- [00:20:42.490]Carson Fischer: can you? Can you write? You know
- [00:20:47.680]Carson Fischer: better than a normal undergraduate student? Right? The paper.
- [00:20:53.580]Carson Fischer: Okay, yes, we have some analytical writing in the back.
- [00:20:58.750]Carson Fischer: So if you want to look at this, where, if either, if you want to.
- [00:21:02.370]Carson Fischer: after came to 4 7 papers to be right now.
- [00:21:11.940]Carson Fischer: So here's a sample response with a score of 6. And they talk about engineers.
- [00:21:18.410]Carson Fischer: I think they're really just looking at this is another one. They're just looking at how you can. You guys can pass that around.
- [00:21:34.020]Carson Fischer: It's important to note that you can order. Additional score reports for $27,
- [00:21:41.590]Carson Fischer: is it? Are you able to schedule?
- [00:21:46.120]Carson Fischer: That is through the testing center? I'm not sure.
- [00:21:49.500]Carson Fischer: maybe.
- [00:22:06.000]Carson Fischer: Okay. So the test duration. It says, 4 h. It is a little bit shorter now, which is really cool
- [00:22:13.620]Carson Fischer: and reminder the scores valid for 5 years.
- [00:22:17.970]Carson Fischer: So all the gr. You can skip questions like I said earlier. There's an on screen calculator there for the writing. There's no spelling or grammar check available.
- [00:22:29.870]Carson Fischer: So it's not like a word, Doc,
- [00:22:34.360]Carson Fischer: and scores for, like the verbal and quantitative bill, up to 170, the writing section is for different things.
- [00:22:44.610]Carson Fischer: and then at the end, your unofficial test. Scores for the verbal and quantitative are displayed. But your writing does take some time, so the writing will be sent to you, you know, via email, with your test results. And you'll log into the Gre website and all that.
- [00:23:00.330]Carson Fischer: And when I signed up for the jury. I don't know if this happened when you signed up there, but they actually give you a free Jerry practice. Yes, so
- [00:23:14.110]Carson Fischer: space out when you want to take those, give yourself some time to study beforehand, maybe a couple of weeks into that you take the first one and treat it real. Okay, set a timer. Don't be around. People. See how you do. See? If you know you have trouble concentrating that long and just it's nice to see the areas that you know you can score and evaluate that. Maybe you need to study more.
- [00:23:40.560]Carson Fischer: Does anyone have questions on how it's formatted? This is the timing of the issue.
- [00:23:47.090]Carson Fischer: So there's 2 sections of each each or 30 min in the math, and you get an additional 5 min.
- [00:23:56.740]Carson Fischer: so like you can't like go back a section right? No. So at the end of each section it will say, Are you sure you want to submit? For instance, when I like started one.
- [00:24:09.770]Carson Fischer: So I like, let's say I'm taking the and I have 5 min left.
- [00:24:16.360]Carson Fischer: I would. It's like you have 5 min left. Pretty sure you want to submit. And I'm like, yep. And then you like the 30 s kind of wheel that's spinning. And it's like, okay, you have 30 s until the quantitative reason is going to begin, and then it's like, Are you ready? And then you're like, yes, and then you go into your 35 min.
- [00:24:37.540]Carson Fischer: it is kind of smart to research how long people take to spend on each question. If I remember, I think it's around 90 s for the verbal reasoning, and then you can apply yourself around 100 s for quantity.
- [00:24:53.420]Carson Fischer: So if you're spending a lot of time on one, you know. Question.
- [00:24:57.820]Carson Fischer: you know. See if you can go back.
- [00:25:01.300]Carson Fischer: you do. I found myself on the practice exam, spending longer than I thought, so I made it a habit to kind of just at least build something in
- [00:25:12.150]Carson Fischer: you could always go back. So
- [00:25:15.890]Carson Fischer: so for the writing section the same to your question. It measures critical thinking and analytical writing skills specific to you know how you articulate, how you support big and complex ideas. And it's just seen how clearly you write, how effectively you can explain something. Some people write a lot of fluff. But are you good getting to the point? Are you going to be adequate? Or Pt school?
- [00:25:41.830]Carson Fischer: So yeah, think about relevant to writing grants, academic papers.
- [00:25:47.320]Carson Fischer: How would you write your personal statement for Pt. School.
- [00:25:51.690]Carson Fischer: The biggest thing is just no spelling, no grammar and be sure to like, leave some time to approve reading.
- [00:26:03.600]Carson Fischer: So this is a sample writing prompt. If you guys want to read that.
- [00:26:32.630]Carson Fischer: So does that give you a good idea of possibly what? And they're they're gonna be kind of all over the place they're looking for, or is it just like.
- [00:26:45.590]Carson Fischer: no.
- [00:26:47.040]Carson Fischer: there's no link. Just think about the structure of an academic paper. So you have.
- [00:26:51.930]Carson Fischer: you know, a clear beginning, the clear thesis or theme. The conclusion like simple things. You know what I'm saying.
- [00:27:03.330]Carson Fischer: so don't think it has to be like lengthy by any means. But
- [00:27:07.560]Carson Fischer: not finishing
- [00:27:09.770]Carson Fischer: a long paper would be worse, in my opinion, than writing a really structured short paper.
- [00:27:19.640]Carson Fischer: And this is going to be a sample argument writing prompt. So you will have one of each.
- [00:27:26.560]Carson Fischer: You can read that.
- [00:28:13.360]Carson Fischer: So how does that sound good?
- [00:28:17.020]Carson Fischer: Are you guys strong writers, or are you guys more math people?
- [00:28:22.850]Carson Fischer: I could write it like a friendly, you know.
- [00:28:29.960]Carson Fischer: Yeah. And so you know, maybe that section, I mean, obviously, what stinks about. The practice test is that the
- [00:28:38.310]Carson Fischer: every other section is support but the writing. But you can still practice. You know the timing that you have. A lot of people get high stress high in his id, and then maybe their thoughts aren't as clear in a situation like this for a time writing
- [00:28:53.700]Carson Fischer: prompt, but also know that, like your other scores are gonna outweigh. So they're gonna look at everything. But you just don't want to have a low score, and I don't see you guys struggling with that. But we also have the writing center.
- [00:29:08.910]Carson Fischer: Things like that you can use. I still grab like an intro body for this, like, I'm starting to see like how to write an intro.
- [00:29:17.020]Carson Fischer: yeah, you do want to think about structuring it that way. So
- [00:29:23.690]Carson Fischer: and so that's what you can practice. Just kind of sticking to that structure. How you would write an academic essay.
- [00:29:31.230]Carson Fischer: Think about you know how it would be applicable to, you know. Pg.
- [00:29:39.340]Carson Fischer: so the verbal reasoning part is going to assess how you analyze and evaluate written materials.
- [00:29:46.200]Carson Fischer: This part is kind of just all over the place. It's really just big vocabulary grammar. A lot of the questions will be
- [00:29:56.910]Carson Fischer: something like, okay, put 3. Pick 3 words to go in these blanks. and if you get one of them wrong, and you get 2 of them right, the whole question as well.
- [00:30:08.550]Carson Fischer: So that is how it is scored.
- [00:30:10.620]Carson Fischer: consider practice using content context clues. Yeah. So a lot of times you're gonna be like, I've never heard this word before. I don't know what it means. So really analyzing. Okay, the structure of the sentence.
- [00:30:26.870]Carson Fischer: what is what is giving me anything to kind of understand this? Or we'll talk about in like prep courses, let's say which 3 or 4 words kind of have similarities. You're really lost. That's that's something that you can kind of come back to.
- [00:30:45.230]Carson Fischer: This is an example. So go ahead and read this. So some will be reading comprehension, and some will be short sentences fill in the blank. So this is a reading comprehension. So I'll give you a couple of minutes. Read this. Okay.
- [00:32:09.650]Carson Fischer: and this is an example of
- [00:32:12.060]Carson Fischer: you would have around 100 s on average to answer this, which let me feel short. So if you're like. Oh, I'm only halfway through, you know, picking my answer. But this is just something that you can practice and practice the timing of
- [00:32:31.140]Carson Fischer: This is also where it comes into play.
- [00:32:35.920]Carson Fischer: on websites like Khan Academy, where they have one question a day. It's going to be like this will do a reading comprehension every day, and so give you in the habit of. Okay, set your timer, put it out next to you, give yourself only this designated time, and then see how thoroughly you can read and answer it, and they'll give you the answer to kind of practice. So
- [00:32:56.670]Carson Fischer: those are good things. This is what a verbal reasoning sample. So this is a text completion.
- [00:33:05.350]Carson Fischer: So you have all these answers.
- [00:33:12.040]Carson Fischer: I'll give you about same amount of time.
- [00:33:51.780]Carson Fischer: But sleep oxygen. So Video
- [00:33:59.820]Carson Fischer: didn't. or be able to see it or anybody.
- [00:34:04.890]Carson Fischer: Yeah, I think we just write the documentary.
- [00:34:09.850]Carson Fischer: Excellent. What do you guys think about this talk
- [00:34:14.170]Carson Fischer: like it better works in the last one it will just depend on. So. This is one of those. Fill in the blank comprehension. There'll be other sentences that they bring up to that will be more analyzing. A lot bigger vocabulary. So you guys can see that in that book as well.
- [00:34:39.870]Carson Fischer: This is part of the sentence equivalence.
- [00:34:43.250]Carson Fischer: And this to me is is pretty outdated of a question. So like, I said honestly. The best way to practice this section is read.
- [00:34:53.449]Carson Fischer: Read big fake books, read fantasy, read things that like maybe aren't your interest in like.
- [00:34:59.390]Carson Fischer: allow you to gain some big vocabulary because it's going to be much higher scale with this. But this one, yeah, you can practice that. You would select 2 answers.
- [00:35:11.880]Carson Fischer: for this and that. Could you know. both work? Hold?
- [00:35:24.350]Carson Fischer: Okay. So moving on to the quantitative reasoning section, this measures basic mathematical skills, understanding of anywhere from elementary mathematics all the way to now, so this is a big part where maybe you need to go back. Maybe you need to go back if you have freshman notes, and you took like ap college algebra high school. Coming back to kind of those skills that
- [00:35:50.150]Carson Fischer: we maybe forget when we're doing a lot higher end things.
- [00:35:54.430]Carson Fischer: So
- [00:35:57.180]Carson Fischer: those and are the question types of.
- [00:36:00.710]Carson Fischer: and I suggest, you can sign up for the free quantity of reasoning
- [00:36:07.310]Carson Fischer: tutor sessions on Zoom Gary Kaplan is my help me. and I'm pretty sure, just for creating a free account. You get like 2
- [00:36:16.980]Carson Fischer: to zoom session, and they were like forget. And so you're with a bunch of other like otpt students. And there's a professor.
- [00:36:27.600]Carson Fischer: probably somewhere around the Us. Who's teaching you and going through each of these sections, and I find it to be pretty helpful.
- [00:36:36.070]Carson Fischer: So this is an example.
- [00:37:22.560]Carson Fischer: how do you guys feel about this question?
- [00:37:26.610]Carson Fischer: Good. This is your skill set nice. Well, that's good. A lot of people stress about this section. So if that's your strength, then use it.
- [00:37:35.650]Carson Fischer: This is a another example. So this is just like one or more.
- [00:37:41.870]Carson Fischer: So yeah, which is following. Integers are both pulled up, both 2 and 3.
- [00:37:49.500]Carson Fischer: So you may. It's all. It's all pretty random, so you may find that some sections are easier than others.
- [00:38:00.560]Carson Fischer: You might have one quantitative reading section that
- [00:38:04.400]Carson Fischer: is a little easier than the other section and the order in which they play out.
- [00:38:13.510]Carson Fischer: So these are some examples of a score. This is back in 2,016. So no free. 4 free score reports on the day of the exam. I'm II think it's 5 now. So just research that ahead of time
- [00:38:29.950]Carson Fischer: scores are valid for 5 years. This is what it will look like when you open your gre account, and you see your score, so it may take like a week.
- [00:38:39.680]Carson Fischer: 10 to 15 days at most to get your score back. so just account for that time. And it will tell you your percentile. And each.
- [00:38:55.020]Carson Fischer: So we talked about some tips. We talked about some resources. Knowing the minimum and average scores for the programs you're applying to is a big thing. So looking up, if you guys are both applying to you and see seeing what you know, what.
- [00:39:08.860]Carson Fischer: see, what their stats are, seeing, what their average score is that they admit into the program, and maybe looking at your dream school wherever that is, and seeing what they accept.
- [00:39:19.310]Carson Fischer: So no points are deducted for wrong answers. That is the biggest thing.
- [00:39:23.900]Carson Fischer: so you may as well answer. You're not losing points. It's better to guess than leave it blank.
- [00:39:29.970]Carson Fischer: So if you are running out of time, you're like, I'm going to come back to this question. At least click something
- [00:39:36.330]Carson Fischer: before you skip, and just, you know, make a note. You'll have scratch paper, so make a note to come back to that question, but at least fill it out.
- [00:39:45.660]Carson Fischer: You do get one piece of scratch paper and a pencil.
- [00:39:49.600]Carson Fischer: and then you cannot bring a calculator in. You just have that on screen calculator. You can't bring water in.
- [00:39:57.120]Carson Fischer: and you'll just have similar to like a really skinny walls next to you.
- [00:40:04.670]Carson Fischer: But yeah, just spend time reviewing things, especially geometry.
- [00:40:09.330]Carson Fischer: like we said things you took back in high school. I even just found Youtube channels to be really helpful. So you can Google like Gre, prep plans. And it'll be like week by week, you know, which concepts to
- [00:40:23.870]Carson Fischer: kind of teach yourself again. And if I didn't remember, I would just Youtube it and watch like a 30 min. Maybe it's like, even like a freshman professor talking about something that I don't remember. So
- [00:40:37.220]Carson Fischer: yeah, do you guys have any questions? 6 to 8 weeks? Minimum.
- [00:40:45.080]Carson Fischer: I hope this helps. I know it's like a lot once. But
- [00:40:52.060]Carson Fischer: When are you guys planning to study for the jury?
- [00:41:02.900]Carson Fischer: I'm taking it like the last minute. so probably should start soon
- [00:41:09.930]Carson Fischer: how? 6 to 8 weeks for like, how long a day? Slash week.
- [00:41:17.010]Carson Fischer: So if that is the case.
- [00:41:20.860]Carson Fischer: if you're really like where to start, I would take a practice exam.
- [00:41:26.910]Carson Fischer: You know it's one strategy to take agre just without studying. See where you're at. You were like your baseline is. Or maybe you want to like, watch a couple of videos. Maybe you want to study a little bit. But yeah, like, let's say you commit in the next like 2 weekends, and you spend like one party your Sunday taking it.
- [00:41:47.280]Carson Fischer: And if you're happy with your score it doesn't mean they'll study. It maybe means just like, okay. Now, I know, like an hour a day instead of some people may have to do like 3 HA day on the section that they don't
- [00:42:00.400]Carson Fischer: like math was math is hard for me. I scored really high in writing, and I wasn't really stressed about the writing. So it really just depends on you know, it was a person, a student, how your brain works.
- [00:42:16.640]Carson Fischer: Yes, look, tips from students. Geo-re book. We have one here. Space out studying over a long amount of time. So don't pray.
- [00:42:25.540]Carson Fischer: So if you guys, yeah, if you're taking it in May. Okay, you still have a good end of May. Okay, yeah, you're at a good point that maybe like this weekend, you build a schedule and you start studying now, and you'll be surprised. You'll make a gre account you'll make like a Kaplan free account, and you'll just start.
- [00:42:48.370]Carson Fischer: You'll start seeing all the information you'll feel motivated. Trust me, we'll be like, oh, yes, they do this and this every day.
- [00:42:57.290]Carson Fischer: yes, take a practice exam, and if you want to taste, take one for a baseline. Do that. So
- [00:43:04.250]Carson Fischer: study the vocabulary, read books.
- [00:43:07.060]Carson Fischer: do the word a day stuff like that.
- [00:43:11.850]Carson Fischer: And these are all resources. So if you guys want to take a picture of this
- [00:43:15.790]Carson Fischer: if you guys want more in depth resources, you can also schedule an appointment with me. So I'm Carson. My last name. I'm Carson Fisher. So you want to Google my name in the Unl system. My office is just downstairs. So
- [00:43:32.560]Carson Fischer: yeah. And I just took it. So I really liked this Kaplan, the free test.
- [00:43:39.430]Carson Fischer: and they even II didn't know that once I paid for the exam, it would give me like a one to 2, 3 exams. So those are additional at that point I was like, no, I've taken too many, but so just know that. And so the sooner you sign up, the sooner you have those resources as well.
- [00:43:59.830]Carson Fischer: The math resource center on campus as well as the writing center. Maybe like this wants to go to the writing center, you know. Maybe you guys are really strong in the math and
- [00:44:08.180]Carson Fischer: doing a practice one together, maybe is like a good idea. You go in there and you can bring a prompt or you can ask for a prompt. So
- [00:44:18.300]Carson Fischer: yeah, do you guys have any questions now.
- [00:44:27.220]Carson Fischer: and maybe you find a prep course that is like not too expensive. So
- [00:44:33.630]Carson Fischer: study groups, maybe you're both starting to study. So setting a timer, and you know, quizzing each other.
- [00:44:45.310]Carson Fischer: I was surprised just how much
- [00:44:55.070]Carson Fischer: reading helps
- [00:44:56.560]Carson Fischer: like reading reading for pleasure is something that I think you start to lose sight of with all of your guys, heavy force work being free health students, but getting back to reading at a high level for pleasure, like
- [00:45:11.320]Carson Fischer: honestly, like some of the fantasy. And like I was reading like the Akotar series, and like that kind of if you guys have heard of that, and so we're like, Lord of the rings, any of that, any of that type of stuff will help with your vocabulary. So yeah, thank you guys for coming. And if you guys want to schedule or drop in, we do drop in every day from 10 to 4. So
- [00:45:37.280]Carson Fischer: yes, that is all I have. But thanks, guys geared towards you personal. So if you guys will just give Macy or any id number before you leave and kind of keep your data, you know, huge crowds.
- [00:45:55.290]Carson Fischer: Yeah, are you?
- [00:46:01.070]Carson Fischer: Yes, if you, if you can do this workshop evaluate.
- [00:46:08.470]Carson Fischer: So thank you guys for coming.
- [00:46:22.100]Carson Fischer: Phd, here somewhere else. Here. Yeah. So I staff like once you want to work
- [00:46:28.820]Carson Fischer: well, he will not be working at a university, but maybe we intuition reimbursement so I would love to do it as a working like 7 to 8 years. So
- [00:46:44.240]Carson Fischer: I work at graduate studies. Oh, you do. Maybe I can email you. I didn't know.
- [00:46:50.770]Carson Fischer: Probably not not very important. Yeah, 280,
- [00:46:57.610]Carson Fischer: 2, 9, 7, 0 3. Thank you.
- [00:47:09.400]Carson Fischer: Thank you. Thanks. Thanks.
