[00:00:09.920]Katherine Frels, UNL's small grains breeder, tells us more.
[00:00:13.480]I talked about it last year as its experimental number, but now it's got a name.
[00:00:17.900]It's NE Prism CLP. It's a two-gene clear field, that's what the CLP means.
[00:00:24.080]And it's going to be out for wider availability this fall.
[00:00:29.000]People who were able to get some of that last fall with its limited release are really excited about it.
[00:00:35.520]It looks good. It yields well. You get good grassy weed control.
[00:00:39.500]The other exciting thing about this is it's one of the few lines targeted towards the Nebraska panhandle that have fusarium head blight resistance.
[00:00:49.320]So it's moderately resistant to this disease.
[00:00:51.740]It's not something the breeding program has prioritized for this region because we so rarely see it.
[00:00:58.800]But with, you know, weather patterns being a little bit different, we've actually seen more fusarium head blight.
[00:01:05.460]So we're really excited that Prism has something to offer for that particular disease in addition to its two-gene clearfield traits.
[00:01:14.540]Katherine, what are some other varieties the growers can look forward to?
[00:01:18.240]So we've got several upcoming lines.
[00:01:21.140]You may be familiar with some of the older University of Nebraska varieties, Ruth and Rubidoux.
[00:01:28.600]have some lines.
[00:01:29.660]that we're looking at to potentially replace those two varieties, looking for higher yield,
[00:01:37.980]maybe better quality or better protein, or a better disease package.
[00:01:42.620]So we've got some coming up.
[00:01:44.500]They're experimental designations.
[00:01:46.620]We're going to see what these variety test results look like this year and then make
[00:01:50.920]the release decision for next year.
[00:01:53.820]Of course, there is the ever-present wheat stem sawfly.
[00:01:56.520]What's going on in that region?
[00:01:58.540]Always a concern out in the panhandle.
[00:02:00.900]We have some experimental semi-solids from the university that are in the variety trials
[00:02:06.740]for the first time this year.
[00:02:09.340]If they do really well in the trials, if we like what we're seeing for the sawfly resistance,
[00:02:15.040]we may try to fast track those and get them into growers' hands faster.
[00:02:19.820]We've talked a lot about the sawfly research that we're doing in collaboration between
[00:02:24.980]entomologists, the cropping systems, and the breeding
[00:02:28.520]program as well as across state lines.
[00:02:31.760]So we're really excited about the research potential to improve this pest problem for
[00:02:37.740]Nebraska farmers, for High Plains farmers.
[00:02:40.760]We've got a great coalition going on that sawfly and we're just really excited to be
[00:02:44.340]able to contribute some varieties to it.
