[00:00:00.040]So the overall goal of this project is to characterize comprehensive hearing and
[00:00:14.160]balance function in people who misuse substances so illicit drugs or prescription opioids and see
[00:00:21.060]how those results compare to an age, race, ethnicity, and gender matched healthy cohort.
[00:00:29.200]For the whole entire study, it's spanning five years, and we're planning to get a thousand
[00:00:35.020]people. 600 of those are going to be people with a substance use disorder and 400 are going to be
[00:00:41.500]age, gender, and race/ethnicity matched people who are healthy controls, who don't have a
[00:00:48.220]substance use disorder. So the aims of the project, we've got three aims. So the first
[00:00:53.600]one is to investigate the role of substance misuse on hearing, and then the second aim,
[00:00:58.400]is looking at the effects of substance misuse on comprehensive balance function. So our
[00:01:06.660]is part of our balance system, and that's in the inner ear.
[00:01:09.660]So a lot of times when we see hearing loss,
[00:01:11.940]we also see some balance disturbances as well.
[00:01:14.240]The third aim is looking at how specific
[00:01:18.320]socio-demographic factors
[00:01:20.140]and other potential comorbid health factors,
[00:01:23.200]so that's physical health and mental health,
[00:01:25.160]might influence some of the hearing imbalance findings
[00:01:28.600]that we find between the two groups.

[00:01:35.760]how hearing imbalance are affected by substance misuse.

[00:01:51.160]on how substance misuse might impact hearing imbalance,
