[00:00:00.240]The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Wheat Variety Tour in June held at the High Plains Ag Lab
[00:00:04.560]in Sydney had a variety of speakers on wheat varieties and on wheat diseases.
[00:00:09.800]Dr. Stephen Wegulo, UNL plant pathologist, discussed some of the diseases he was seeing
[00:00:14.880]across Nebraska in the wheat.
[00:00:17.720]Disease-wise in wheat we have been seeing stripe rust, it's actually pretty bad in the
[00:00:23.520]eastern part of the state, especially southeast, south central, we have seen very severe stripe
[00:00:29.640]rust there, as you move west it's less of stripe rust, so that's the major disease we
[00:00:38.020]are seeing in Nebraska at this time.
[00:00:41.520]I have also seen a little bit of leaf rust, but it came in late, it's not going to really
[00:00:47.480]impact anything in terms of yield.
[00:00:51.880]So another disease that we have seen is wheat streak mosaic, which is a complex of three
[00:00:59.280]viruses.
[00:01:00.740]We have seen it, but in isolated cases, all the way from southeast Nebraska to south central
[00:01:08.760]to southwest Nebraska.
[00:01:10.520]We have seen isolated cases of wheat streak mosaic complex, and in each case they planted
[00:01:16.400]wheat next to a field that had volunteer wheat, and that volunteer was not controlled when
[00:01:23.320]the wheat was planted, so what happened was the wheat calmites, which transmit the wheat
[00:01:28.920]mosaic
[00:01:30.180]Those wheat call mites, they survive on the volunteer wheat and then if you don't control
[00:01:36.920]volunteer wheat you plant in the fall.
[00:01:40.580]Wind carries those mites onto the new wheat.
[00:01:44.060]They transmit the virus and you have a problem the next spring.
[00:01:47.480]Stephen what are you seeing more of in the Panhandle?
[00:01:50.660]We have seen, we are out here in the Panhandle right now.
[00:01:55.620]We are seeing, I've seen what we call leaf spot diseases and the major one that we have
[00:02:02.000]seen is septoria leaf blotch also called septoria tritici blotch.
[00:02:09.980]Actually we have seen some high levels of that disease in the eastern part of the state
[00:02:15.880]especially south central and southeast Nebraska.
[00:02:20.260]It's not as widespread as stripe rust so it's not much of a concern as stripe rust
[00:02:25.600]is.
[00:02:26.600]I would like to add though that we control stripe rust by applying a fungicide to protect
[00:02:33.300]the flag leaf but right now it's too late to apply a fungicide because wheat is already
[00:02:39.880]past flowering so at this time there is nothing that can be done in terms of applying a fungicide
[00:02:45.660]to control foliar fungal diseases.
