Description
Dr. Chan Hellman says that Hope is the belief that your future will be better than today, and you have the power to make it so. Hope is a way of thinking and something that can be taught. In essence Hope is about goals, pathways, and willpower. This video highlights how some Nebraskans think about hope and it was played at the recent Nebraska for Young Children Institute.

- [00:00:01.817](peaceful music)
- [00:00:16.299](peaceful music continues)
- [00:00:25.620]Think about that
- [00:00:26.460]when I say the word hope.
- [00:00:29.669]Like you wish something that would come true.
- [00:00:33.219](peaceful music continues)
- [00:00:35.215]What do you think?
- [00:00:37.998]I don't know.
- [00:00:40.467]What do you think, Sabine?
- [00:00:41.958]Something that starts out sad
- [00:00:43.575]but then comes out beautiful.
- [00:00:46.507]Adelaide, we are talking about hope
- [00:00:49.366]and what that means to us.
- [00:00:51.586]What does hope mean to you?
- [00:00:54.107]Taking care of people.
- [00:00:55.896]Taking care of people.
- [00:00:58.710]Hope is kind of that big word
- [00:01:00.690]that you're trying to wish for something
- [00:01:03.600]that you don't know that might come true,
- [00:01:06.336]but it also might. (peaceful music continues)
- [00:01:08.368]Hope means, to me, that you make a wish
- [00:01:14.727]and it comes true, like your heart.
- [00:01:19.740]Hope means to me that you could work harder
- [00:01:22.530]for something, like my violin,
- [00:01:25.770]because I wanna be a professional violist.
- [00:01:28.710]Hope gives me motivation.
- [00:01:31.530]It allows me to think about goals, think about the future.
- [00:01:35.520]It allows me to step forward in a way with confidence
- [00:01:41.670]to be able to reach those goals.
- [00:01:43.515](music intensifies)
- [00:01:51.510]What does hope mean to me as a professional in this work?
- [00:01:54.390]Well, it means that every single day, myself,
- [00:01:57.060]my team here at Educare Lincoln,
- [00:01:58.980]you, my colleagues in this work,
- [00:02:01.080]on behalf of kids and families,
- [00:02:02.400]we have to get up every single day
- [00:02:04.620]and believe in our hearts, and in our souls,
- [00:02:06.927]and our spirits that today
- [00:02:09.120]and that tomorrow will be better than last.
- [00:02:12.480]My name is Lauren Clark
- [00:02:13.830]and I work for Beyond School Bells,
- [00:02:15.420]which is Nebraska's (indistinct) afterschool network.
- [00:02:18.390]And to me, hope really means
- [00:02:20.220]having something to look forward to.
- [00:02:22.890]In doing so, in partnership with kids,
- [00:02:25.470]in partnership with families, in partnership with community,
- [00:02:29.077]we are creating a better future for a lot of kids
- [00:02:31.980]and families that need us.
- [00:02:33.990]Stop saying toddlers are terrible,
- [00:02:36.030]or the terrible twos.
- [00:02:37.770]I frigging love them.
- [00:02:39.210]Toddlers are amazing, they're hysterical,
- [00:02:42.300]they're such a great point of development.
- [00:02:44.520]I get that they can be tough and that's okay,
- [00:02:47.070]but my hope that the world will realize
- [00:02:49.680]just how awesome toddlers really are,
- [00:02:52.320]Just working with children gives me hope in the future.
- [00:02:54.810]And that there's always hope
- [00:02:56.940]that things are gonna be better.
- [00:02:59.130]I really think after school is a unique place
- [00:03:01.680]to cultivate hope for kids.
- [00:03:04.350]It gives them the chance to connect with other students.
- [00:03:07.020]It gives them a chance to enjoy a school setting
- [00:03:09.840]without grades and homework,
- [00:03:11.460]which could be barriers for some.
- [00:03:13.770]And it really gives them the chance
- [00:03:15.570]to learn and thrive and be a kid.
- [00:03:18.750]And I think it's a place that really does
- [00:03:22.680]inspire hope in a lot of students.
- [00:03:24.540]And I hope we can continue to do that.
- [00:03:26.970]So for me, as a professional, what does hope mean?
- [00:03:30.690]Well, it means that tomorrow
- [00:03:31.590]has to be better than yesterday,
- [00:03:32.910]and I am in control of that as much as I can be.
- [00:03:37.106](intense music)
- [00:03:51.899](gentle music)
- [00:04:00.366]Hi, my name is John Cook.
- [00:04:01.530]I'm the Nebraska volleyball coach.
- [00:04:04.020]I was made aware of the event
- [00:04:05.760]you guys are having this weekend.
- [00:04:08.370]I love that you're spending time in your summer
- [00:04:10.800]to work on youth in Nebraska.
- [00:04:13.830]For the last 20 years when I've been speaking,
- [00:04:15.870]I talk about building the three bones
- [00:04:18.180]in the youth of the state.
- [00:04:19.440]And I start with our players
- [00:04:20.760]because I want them to be great role models
- [00:04:23.370]and there's three bones that we have to develop.
- [00:04:25.470]The first bone is a backbone
- [00:04:27.300]so the kids in this state can grow up to be strong,
- [00:04:31.050]be tough, know when to say no,
- [00:04:33.870]and just how to handle and work through adversity.
- [00:04:36.720]The second bone is a wishbone.
- [00:04:39.120]We want them to dream big and go for it.
- [00:04:41.760]Jordan Larson told me as an eighth grader,
- [00:04:43.740]she was gonna be an Olympian and come to Nebraska
- [00:04:46.350]and win a national championship.
- [00:04:48.330]And the third bone is a funny bone
- [00:04:49.920]because as these kids grow up,
- [00:04:52.560]they should be doing fun things and enjoying life.
- [00:04:55.620]I admire and respect that you're taking time
- [00:04:58.080]outta your summer to work on making our state better,
- [00:05:03.120]and especially starting with the youth in Nebraska.
- [00:05:05.910]I look through the agenda,
- [00:05:07.710]there's some heavy duty stuff on there.
- [00:05:09.870]And again, much respect and admiration
- [00:05:12.630]for what you're doing.
- [00:05:13.800]I want to wish you all the best.
- [00:05:15.990]And like we say, there's no place like Nebraska.
