- [00:00:11.021]Husker Engineering professor, Lily Wang,
- [00:00:13.380]is an acoustics expert.
- [00:00:15.060]Wang studies the noise levels in schools, restaurants
- [00:00:18.150]and other public spaces.
- [00:00:19.980]Wang's research shows that prolonged exposure
- [00:00:22.290]to excessive noise, can have physical effects.
- [00:00:24.600]Such as increased anxiety and fatigue.
- [00:00:27.090]And restaurant staff risk permanent hearing damage.
- [00:00:30.000]Wang runs the acoustics program in the Durham School
- [00:00:32.850]and she's the former president
- [00:00:34.170]of the Acoustical Society of America.

- [00:00:37.950]A new tree on the UNL campus,
- [00:00:39.750]is literally from out of this world.
- [00:00:41.700]The sweetgum Moon Tree, planted on East Campus,
- [00:00:44.340]was grown from a seed that flew three times around the moon.
- [00:00:47.730]Three, two, one, boosters in ignition.
- [00:00:52.110]And lift off of Artemis 1.
- [00:00:54.240]We rise together, back to the moon and beyond.
- [00:00:58.980]The seed flew in space
- [00:01:00.150]for 25 days aboard NASA's Artemis 1, in 2022.
- [00:01:04.230]The average sweetgum seed, rides the wind for about 200 feet
- [00:01:07.410]before it germinates.
- [00:01:08.243]UNLs sweetgum, nicknamed, Luna,
- [00:01:10.950]traveled about 1.3 million miles
- [00:01:13.170]before finally landing in Lincoln.
- [00:01:15.210]The planting is an expansion of the Moon Tree project,
- [00:01:17.910]that sprouted from the Apollo 14 mission, in 1971.

- [00:01:22.980]Husker researchers helped panhandle farmers
- [00:01:25.170]fight a rare disease.
- [00:01:26.850]Several western Nebraska wheat growers
- [00:01:28.860]called the University last spring,
- [00:01:30.360]when they noticed their winter wheat
- [00:01:31.860]looking bleached and sickly.
- [00:01:33.720]The culprit was a Fusarium head blight, also known as scab.
- [00:01:37.920]A notoriously destructive plant disease,
- [00:01:39.870]rarely seen in western Nebraska.
- [00:01:41.970]The panhandle had more rainfall than normal in 2023,
- [00:01:45.600]which enabled the fungal outbreak.
- [00:01:48.090]After extensive field testing,
- [00:01:49.920]UNL agronomists and plant pathologists,
- [00:01:52.020]came up with a new wheat variety
- [00:01:53.730]that's resistant to scab and other fungal diseases.
- [00:01:56.730]The panhandle region produces more than half
- [00:01:59.100]of the state's wheat.

- [00:02:01.530]Husker students brighten up a southeast Nebraska city.
- [00:02:04.950]Art students from UNL and Nebraska's extension,
- [00:02:07.500]team up with community members
- [00:02:09.060]to create a new mural in downtown Beatrice.
- [00:02:11.910]The painting was designed by Husker student,
- [00:02:13.890]Maddie Vanderbur, for a summer street art class.
- [00:02:17.010]It's Vanderbur's first time working on such a
- [00:02:18.990]large scale project.
- [00:02:20.640]You kind of just have so much open space
- [00:02:22.920]and a lot more room for fine detail, than you'd think.
- [00:02:26.970]But, looking at it from the street,
- [00:02:29.490]completely changes how you see it.
- [00:02:32.250]The idea to create the mural,
- [00:02:33.720]came from the staff at a downtown car dealership.
- [00:02:36.660]They saw an opportunity for a community art project
- [00:02:39.180]and they reached out to the university.
- [00:02:41.100]I've gotten all kinds of text messages from friends
- [00:02:43.350]and other business owners in Beatrice,
- [00:02:45.060]telling us how great this looks and how excited they are.
- [00:02:47.760]And I think it just brings another level
- [00:02:49.680]of interest to downtown.
- [00:02:51.420]It beautifies our community
- [00:02:52.770]and we're really excited to be a part of it.
- [00:02:54.510]Young people from Beatrice helped with
- [00:02:56.340]the actual painting, during a community paint day.
- [00:02:59.670]And that's what's happening this week, at UNL.
