[00:00:21.030]that we're putting on today
[00:00:22.440]is really to have a collective exchange of ideas
[00:00:26.610]and information about what are the biggest health problems
[00:00:30.410]in the state of Nebraska,
[00:00:32.130]and how can we come up with solutions
[00:00:34.440]to try to solve those problems
[00:00:35.730]and potentially scale them
[00:00:37.320]beyond the state of Nebraska, hopefully globally.
[00:00:40.560]So the purpose of the Grand Challenges Grant,
[00:00:44.426]it's open to faculty
[00:00:47.379]at UNL and the idea
[00:00:49.620]is to foster cross-disciplinary collaborations
[00:00:54.270]in order to solve some of our big, wicked problems
[00:00:58.800]that we have in the state of Nebraska
[00:01:00.480]and potentially beyond.

[00:01:06.180]Well, there's a lot of conversations around health equity,
[00:01:08.580]and sometimes pausing to think about how do you do it.
[00:01:13.530]In my presentation I talked a lot about relationships
[00:01:16.350]with communities that you're trying to serve,
[00:01:19.380]marginalized, whether that be age, gender, disability,
[00:01:23.610]or race, ethnicity, veteran status.
[00:01:27.150]There's different ways that you can
[00:01:29.220]dissect marginalized communities,
[00:01:31.050]but how do you meet them where they're at,
[00:01:34.680]meet them in ways that you can
[00:01:38.430]take their perceptions, their thoughts, their ways of being
[00:01:42.900]and implement them into public health practices?

[00:01:49.890]My talk was about pediatric mental wellness
[00:01:52.620]and how social determinants of health, like food security,
[00:01:56.220]healthy housing, financial security, impact mental health.
[00:02:00.810]It's really important to me,
[00:02:02.400]because we know that we can do better.
[00:02:05.280]When we're looking at
[00:02:06.870]what we can do for our communities
[00:02:08.850]and how to make them stronger
[00:02:10.710]and how we have healthy kids grow up to be healthy adults,
[00:02:14.460]we need to impact some of the social needs
[00:02:17.040]that are out there.

[00:02:20.580]Our next one, we're tentatively planning
[00:02:22.320]for probably this coming fall, so in September,
[00:02:25.680]and that one we really kind of wanna focus more on
[00:02:29.010]how can we get students, younger people,
[00:02:32.970]engaged in getting interested in STEM fields,
[00:02:37.080]so science, technology, engineering, math,
[00:02:39.930]but also healthcare fields,
[00:02:42.030]so that individuals from underserved communities
[00:02:45.240]can get some training
[00:02:46.800]and then go back to their own communities,
[00:02:49.020]and deliver healthcare services locally.
