[00:00:04.983]North Platte, Concord, Sidney, and two
[00:00:07.014]near Lincoln. In May, Vesh Thapa, UNL
[00:00:10.725]postdoctoral research associate, and two
[00:00:13.598]master students were in Scottsbluff
[00:00:15.546]sampling the cover crops and their soils.
[00:00:18.056]So we planted this cover crop last fall,
[00:00:20.840]and we are taking um plant height
[00:00:23.864]measurements, ground cover measurements,
[00:00:26.498]uh stem count and we are also tracking
[00:00:30.035]how cover crop impacts on soil properties.
[00:00:34.276]So this morning we are taking samples
[00:00:38.056]of root and soils from two different
[00:00:40.973]depths. So first one is zero to five
[00:00:44.034]centimeters and the deeper depth is
[00:00:46.786]five to 30 centimeters, and we are trying
[00:00:49.513]to track how cover crop impacts
[00:00:52.247]different properties of soil.
[00:00:54.316]The cover crops include different
[00:00:55.853]varieties across the state. In
[00:00:57.761]Scottsbluff the cover crop is a
[00:00:59.609]winter variety that was planted in the fall.
[00:01:01.693]The main idea behind this project is we
[00:01:04.807]just want to identify the most appropriate
[00:01:08.000]cover crop species for different locations
[00:01:11.287]across Nebraska.
[00:01:13.000]The project represents a four-year
[00:01:15.090]collaborative agreement between the University
[00:01:17.328]of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and the
[00:01:18.917]Nebraska Natural Resources Conservation
[00:01:20.863]Service (NRCS) to foster understanding
[00:01:22.969]and promotion of cover crop use in Nebraska.
