- [00:00:23.100]It's a good problem to have
- [00:00:24.240]when your business outgrows your retail space,
- [00:00:26.730]but it's still a problem.
- [00:00:28.830]Jessalyn and Dustin Crawford,
- [00:00:30.420]owners of Hey Honey Boutique in Ord
- [00:00:32.520]recently overcame this challenge
- [00:00:34.200]with the help from business coaches
- [00:00:35.790]from Rural Prosperity Nebraska's eCommunities program,
- [00:00:39.300]setting a benchmark for how collaboration among businesses
- [00:00:42.540]benefits Nebraska's communities.
- [00:00:44.970]We talked about a couple different options.
- [00:00:48.840]One of 'em would've been a lot,
- [00:00:51.780]basically like a tear down lot and then rebuilding,
- [00:00:54.510]and honestly, that would've been just
- [00:00:57.090]probably too much for us, so this was more reasonable,
- [00:01:00.600]it's right on the square in Ord, which is just perfect.
- [00:01:05.070]The Crawfords purchased
- [00:01:06.210]and renovated a historic building as,
- [00:01:08.640]what has been dubbed as an eCoach,
- [00:01:10.680]helped them with the paperwork for city, county,
- [00:01:13.380]and statewide loans and grants.
- [00:01:14.850]So he kinda really helped me with that.
- [00:01:16.230]And with that, it's really extensive,
- [00:01:17.940]and you have to do a business proposal, a business plan,
- [00:01:21.120]all of these things.
- [00:01:21.953]And so we met many times, and revised,
- [00:01:25.410]and went over budgets,
- [00:01:26.550]and so he really helped me with like the confidence of,
- [00:01:30.210]okay, we can do this.
- [00:01:31.590]And through a lot of really great ideas
- [00:01:34.830]on how to find other avenues of grants, and loans,
- [00:01:38.850]and all sorts of things.
- [00:01:40.650]Counseling and workshopping with local eCoaches
- [00:01:42.870]is a mainstay of the eCommunities program.
- [00:01:45.900]Not only do eCoaches help individuals create businesses,
- [00:01:49.380]but they work with Nebraska cities to establish
- [00:01:51.690]and nurture an active entrepreneurial environment,
- [00:01:54.660]which helps communities identify, collect,
- [00:01:57.090]and cultivate resources that encourage business development.
- [00:02:00.180]By the end of the third quarter of 2023,
- [00:02:02.640]the eCommunities program had helped
- [00:02:04.350]20 communities in 12 counties,
- [00:02:06.690]totaling nearly two and a half million dollars
- [00:02:08.790]in revenue and savings.
- [00:02:10.680]The Crawfords saw firsthand how one-on-one coaching
- [00:02:13.200]helped them expand their business into the new building.
- [00:02:15.930]We had a local contractor,
- [00:02:18.150]the local glass guy did all of our glass.
- [00:02:20.730]He did a really good job.
- [00:02:21.750]We had to get a new HVAC,
- [00:02:24.210]we had to get insulation, new drywall, new plumbing.
- [00:02:28.320]I mean, literally everything is totally gutted.
- [00:02:31.440]In fact, in the very back,
- [00:02:32.850]we had to jack up the floor about four and a half inches.
- [00:02:36.630]The boutique is now thriving in Ord's downtown.
- [00:02:39.360]The front of the building, managed by Jessalyn,
- [00:02:41.670]is the boutique,
- [00:02:42.690]and the back has been expanded by Dustin into a gun shop.
- [00:02:45.840]The two meet in the middle at a coffee bar.
- [00:02:47.940]We have women coming in here and they're like,
- [00:02:49.680]I can bring my husband, or vice versa.
- [00:02:51.540]Men are so excited, like my wife can shop while I shop,
- [00:02:55.230]and they can have a coffee while they shop around.
- [00:02:58.440]Kind of like a one-stop shop.
- [00:03:00.270]The couple is still deciding on what to do
- [00:03:01.980]with the second floor.
- [00:03:03.180]When they do, they'll be able to use the restored
- [00:03:05.220]and functional open-air freight elevator from 1840
- [00:03:08.010]that they decided to keep.
- [00:03:09.450]The community was super receptive.
- [00:03:11.550]From the start, they've been incredibly supportive.
- [00:03:14.580]I'm just kind of living out my dream.
- [00:03:16.301](soft upbeat music continues)
