- [00:00:00.480]Hi, my name's Rachel Larson
- [00:00:02.160]and I'm the Assistant Dean of Academic
- [00:00:03.750]and Career Development at the University
- [00:00:05.310]of Nebraska Lincoln College of Business.
- [00:00:07.710]One of the areas I oversee is our business career center,
- [00:00:10.500]and one of my passions is talking
- [00:00:11.910]to students about their career path.
- [00:00:14.040]I'm joined today by Lauren Lewis,
- [00:00:15.930]who's one of our outstanding students
- [00:00:17.700]to talk a little bit more
- [00:00:18.690]about her internship path, welcome, Lauren.
- [00:00:21.451]Thank you.
- [00:00:22.680]So first off, tell us a little bit about you.
- [00:00:24.930]Where are you from and what's your major?
- [00:00:26.580]Yeah, I'm from Omaha, Nebraska.
- [00:00:28.650]I'm a senior marketing major here at the university,
- [00:00:31.590]and then I have an emphasis in advertising,
- [00:00:33.900]so I'm a little bit in that college as well.
- [00:00:36.360]And then I focus on like global studies
- [00:00:39.334]and how that relates to marketing.
- [00:00:41.520]Excellent, so you are a busy student,
- [00:00:43.653]and I know even busier
- [00:00:45.180]because you've had multiple internships
- [00:00:46.890]during your academic career here.
- [00:00:48.750]So tell us a little bit
- [00:00:49.830]about your internships and what you did.
- [00:00:51.750]Yeah, so I started out at Huddle,
- [00:00:54.329]which is a sports technology company.
- [00:00:57.180]And then I moved to my Yahoo internship
- [00:01:00.240]where I was an account strategy intern,
- [00:01:02.610]and then I went to Google last summer
- [00:01:04.710]for my internship there.
- [00:01:06.030]Excellent, and all of those were marketing related?
- [00:01:08.460]Yeah, so they were a mix of marketing and advertising,
- [00:01:10.866]but primarily marketing.
- [00:01:12.300]Great, so give us kind of a broad overview
- [00:01:15.000]of what you did at one or two of those internships.
- [00:01:17.880]Yeah, so at Huddle I was really focused
- [00:01:20.460]on marketing communications internally
- [00:01:23.640]and how that relates to the organization
- [00:01:26.160]and talking about the brand.
- [00:01:27.900]And then at Yahoo I was looking at the demand side platform.
- [00:01:32.340]So basically the back end of all the ads
- [00:01:35.370]that are running in the company
- [00:01:36.600]and then being able to look at the data
- [00:01:39.150]to see what recommendations can be made
- [00:01:41.580]to the clients for improvement.
- [00:01:43.290]And then at Google I was doing a lot of strategy
- [00:01:45.405]and positioning work and then also learning about claims
- [00:01:48.380]and how that relates to marketing legally.
- [00:01:52.080]So sounds like a lot of digital marketing
- [00:01:54.693]and digital marketing strategy, correct?
- [00:01:56.153]Yes, definitely.
- [00:01:56.986]Well, how did you find these internships?
- [00:01:58.884]Yeah, so I would say that I'm big
- [00:02:01.590]on taking advantage of opportunities
- [00:02:03.900]and just leveraging different opportunities
- [00:02:06.750]that I have and looking into things.
- [00:02:08.220]So I found out about the role first on YouTube,
- [00:02:12.240]just listening to a video
- [00:02:13.710]of someone talking about their internship.
- [00:02:15.750]So then I went to LinkedIn to see like what that person did
- [00:02:18.630]and their path leading up into their internship.
- [00:02:21.420]So from there I decided I wanted
- [00:02:23.430]to focus on technology roles, so I tried
- [00:02:26.310]to get as much experience as I could.
- [00:02:28.520]And then also I found out
- [00:02:30.840]about management leaders of tomorrow.
- [00:02:32.730]So I joined that and got some networking
- [00:02:35.460]and then I applied to the role and I got accepted.
- [00:02:39.270]Excellent, well you mentioned LinkedIn
- [00:02:41.610]and I know that's something that we teach
- [00:02:43.140]in our professional enhancement program courses.
- [00:02:45.035]So the Professional Enhancement Program courses
- [00:02:47.580]or PREP for short or a series of four classes
- [00:02:50.910]that our students are required to take
- [00:02:53.292]before graduation to ensure
- [00:02:54.300]that they graduate from the college of business
- [00:02:56.520]as a confident, professional and connected professional.
- [00:03:00.210]So what did you learn
- [00:03:01.680]in those professional enhancement program courses
- [00:03:03.870]that you found valuable in your internship search?
- [00:03:06.540]I would say the biggest thing is probably the resume.
- [00:03:09.570]Making a good resume, finding some good buzzwords
- [00:03:13.020]for that resume, and then having someone
- [00:03:15.060]who could actually look over it and review it.
- [00:03:17.790]And that's still the resume template I have today.
- [00:03:20.580]And then also just learning how to interview a lot better.
- [00:03:23.700]Yes, I know interviewing is something
- [00:03:26.010]that is very important, requires a lot
- [00:03:28.680]of really good communication skills,
- [00:03:30.180]and I love looking at resumes as well
- [00:03:32.700]because it's just one person's
- [00:03:34.860]kind of history
- [00:03:35.910]tailored towards that position all on one sheet of paper.
- [00:03:38.856]Well, what did you learn in your college
- [00:03:41.640]of business courses that you found valuable
- [00:03:43.800]taking into your internships?
- [00:03:45.780]I would say first off,
- [00:03:46.800]just learning about all the different kinds
- [00:03:48.750]of marketing, and marketing,
- [00:03:50.370]you can take that in so many different directions.
- [00:03:52.830]Yes, you could focus on like digital media
- [00:03:54.624]or you could do a lot more of the analytical marketing.
- [00:03:57.780]And I found out the different paths
- [00:04:00.660]that I found most interesting
- [00:04:02.160]and I was able to like focus
- [00:04:03.540]on that in my internship search.
- [00:04:06.510]And then I would also say just learning
- [00:04:08.640]better communication skills and focus.
- [00:04:11.700]Yeah, so a good mix of those like business
- [00:04:14.220]and technical skills
- [00:04:16.050]plus kind of the essential soft skills as well.
- [00:04:18.450]Yes.
- [00:04:19.828]Great.
- [00:04:21.031]So I know that you've accepted a position
- [00:04:22.440]from one of your internships.
- [00:04:23.940]So tell us what you'll be doing after graduation.
- [00:04:26.250]Yeah, so after graduation, I'll be moving to New York
- [00:04:29.640]and working as an associate product marketer at Google.
- [00:04:34.080]Excellent, now, what skills do you think
- [00:04:36.450]that you've developed here as a student?
- [00:04:38.970]I know you were a builder as well.
- [00:04:40.920]So as a Clifton builder
- [00:04:42.870]and a College of Business student,
- [00:04:44.430]what do you think you're gonna be bringing from the College
- [00:04:46.500]of Business here into your full-time position at Google?
- [00:04:49.290]I would say that I'll be bringing
- [00:04:51.630]a lot of those communication skills,
- [00:04:53.640]just knowing how to communicate with different departments.
- [00:04:56.910]'Cause in product marketing, you have to communicate
- [00:04:59.190]with the engineering department,
- [00:05:00.540]but then you also have to work with sales
- [00:05:02.520]and a lot of other teams, definitely cross-functional roles.
- [00:05:05.490]So leveraging that and then other soft skills
- [00:05:08.730]that I've learned here too, just how to be a good employer.
- [00:05:12.210]A lot of that I learned in the Clifton Builders Program,
- [00:05:15.000]really focusing on how to talk to your manager
- [00:05:17.430]and take advantage of opportunities
- [00:05:20.670]and take your progress into your own hands.
- [00:05:23.160]Well, we are so excited to see you graduate here
- [00:05:26.580]and to go on and do really big things,
- [00:05:28.590]not only at Google in your next position,
- [00:05:30.930]but the positions beyond that.
- [00:05:32.430]So thanks for sharing your story with us today, Lauren.
- [00:05:35.280]Thank you.
- [00:05:36.534](upbeat music)
