- [00:00:06.000]Interior Design and Master of Architecture students
- [00:00:08.820]explore textiles at Nebraska Innovation Studio.
- [00:00:12.450]The workshop led by Professor Nate Bicak
- [00:00:15.420]and visiting professor, Felicia Dean, applies techniques
- [00:00:19.170]from the fashion world to the world of interior spaces.
- [00:00:22.980]Students learn firsthand about the qualities
- [00:00:25.620]and uses of several textiles and materials.
- [00:00:29.490]I hope students come out of this
- [00:00:31.740]with a better understanding
- [00:00:33.450]of how to use the sewing machine, how to create, you know,
- [00:00:36.750]use some stitching techniques
- [00:00:39.360]that can manipulate material in such a way
- [00:00:42.930]that they start to think about its use
- [00:00:45.960]in interior space beyond, say,
- [00:00:47.820]upholstery or the scale of the body,
- [00:00:49.830]but the ways we can think
- [00:00:50.663]about using material manipulation techniques
- [00:00:55.710]to create habitable scale kinds
- [00:00:59.040]of material experiences and space.
- [00:01:02.730]So what we're doing in the workshop is we're looking
- [00:01:05.070]at different techniques
- [00:01:06.180]that are taken from fashion apparel usually.
- [00:01:09.000]They're called like
- [00:01:09.870]three dimensional fabric manipulation techniques,
- [00:01:13.710]and we're applying them in more
- [00:01:15.060]of a spatial project ultimately.
- [00:01:17.280]So we're looking beyond like the human scale and the body
- [00:01:20.670]like fashion would do,
- [00:01:21.840]and we're thinking of interior space and surroundings.
- [00:01:26.400]Manipulating like textiles in the 3D
- [00:01:28.920]is something that I had never really heard of.
- [00:01:31.020]And so, it being a whole new field was something
- [00:01:34.470]that really intrigued me about the workshop,
- [00:01:36.270]because I'm already a textile artist,
- [00:01:38.280]so getting another tool to put in my toolbox
- [00:01:40.590]is really interesting.
- [00:01:42.240]The textiles exploration is the first
- [00:01:44.520]of three workshops over the next three years,
- [00:01:47.040]which are made possible
- [00:01:48.150]by an Angelo Donghia Foundation grant that was awarded
- [00:01:51.540]to the Interior Design program.
