- [00:00:05.790]A local cultural center has partnered
- [00:00:07.650]with the College of Architecture.
- [00:00:09.690]The Lincoln Indian Center
- [00:00:10.920]has served the indigenous populations
- [00:00:12.960]of Lincoln, Nebraska since 1969.
- [00:00:16.170]The Indian Center collaborated with students to find ways
- [00:00:19.350]to enhance the aging building and surrounding grounds.
- [00:00:23.220]At a community engagement event,
- [00:00:25.050]teams of architecture and landscape architecture students,
- [00:00:28.170]led by visiting professor Monique Bassey,
- [00:00:31.170]shared design opportunities with community members.
- [00:00:34.800]The Indian Center community wants us to really think
- [00:00:37.890]about the opportunities to expand the programming
- [00:00:41.940]within the building as well as the site,
- [00:00:44.910]to also look at opportunities to renovate the building
- [00:00:49.470]for better use for the community.
- [00:00:51.930]And not only thinking about the present time,
- [00:00:54.060]but thinking longevity for several years to come.
- [00:00:57.780]We are working closely with the community.
- [00:01:00.780]We are hosting a lot of community engagement events
- [00:01:03.690]where we are asking very specific questions
- [00:01:06.630]regarding values, history, traditions,
- [00:01:09.510]the general journey of the site and of the building,
- [00:01:12.180]just so that we can get a better understanding
- [00:01:13.920]of how they already use it and to identify opportunity
- [00:01:17.220]for further expansion and programming.
- [00:01:20.130]It's the most community engagement
- [00:01:21.480]we've ever had in a project.
- [00:01:22.740]And being able to come and visit the Indian Center here
- [00:01:25.770]has been really insightful
- [00:01:27.750]and getting to meet with the whole community.
- [00:01:30.330]So that's been definitely the most unique part
- [00:01:32.520]of the project.
- [00:01:34.020]I'm awestruck in a lot of the ways
- [00:01:35.670]and how much effort they really put into it.
- [00:01:37.530]The research that they put into it,
- [00:01:39.090]little details like how they,
- [00:01:41.100]there's a renovation that they wanna put a balcony on here
- [00:01:43.320]and they use the concept of the teepee poles and the circle
- [00:01:48.600]and they incorporated that into like the balcony.
- [00:01:50.670]Things like that, like little details that they put into it
- [00:01:52.770]that shows that they've put a lot of research
- [00:01:54.930]and a lot of thought, a lot of learning,
- [00:01:57.120]getting the input from our elders
- [00:01:58.590]and other people that have come in.
- [00:02:00.748]They've really done a great job, so I'm very impressed.
- [00:02:02.940]I would love to keep working with them.
