- [00:00:05.910]Hello and welcome to our June Inside Nebraska Business.
- [00:00:10.140]It's a wonderful time to be a Husker,
- [00:00:12.480]especially for those who recently earned their degrees.
- [00:00:15.810]Congratulations May graduates,
- [00:00:18.180]you join a group of supportive,
- [00:00:19.890]collaborative business alumni
- [00:00:21.750]and friends from all over the world.
- [00:00:24.398](upbeat music continues)
- [00:00:26.790]This spring we honored eight innovative leaders
- [00:00:29.940]at our 39th Annual Advisory Board Award celebration
- [00:00:34.320]in Hawks Hall with one of our largest crowds yet.
- [00:00:38.490]Board chair Lisa Smith and I presented the awards
- [00:00:42.000]to alumni and friends
- [00:00:43.320]who are leading the future of business.
- [00:00:46.110]The Young Alumni Award was presented
- [00:00:48.570]to Jason Muhleisen of Union Bank & Trust.
- [00:00:52.650]When I was preparing to take over
- [00:00:53.940]for the role of President and CEO of Union Bank & Trust,
- [00:00:57.270]I did a lot of studying,
- [00:00:58.500]learning the intricacies of credit, commercial lending,
- [00:01:01.620]trust administration, operations, all sorts of things,
- [00:01:05.700]and discerning good risks from bad risk.
- [00:01:07.470]But beyond all of the studying and observing,
- [00:01:09.930]there really isn't a substitute for listening
- [00:01:12.630]to the wisdom of the other leaders at the bank.
- [00:01:16.350]Don and Linda Eckles accepted
- [00:01:18.600]the Corporate Leadership Award
- [00:01:20.220]on behalf of Scooter's Coffee.
- [00:01:22.620]Franchising is hard.
- [00:01:25.170]As you get bigger it gets harder.
- [00:01:27.210]And our core values are integrity,
- [00:01:29.580]love, humility, and courage.
- [00:01:31.380]Love being bigger than the others in print,
- [00:01:34.590]because we believe that really love
- [00:01:36.810]should be kind of the center of everything.
- [00:01:39.420]We're proud to be a Nebraska-based company.
- [00:01:41.730]We'll always be a Nebraska-based company.
- [00:01:44.880]Three siblings and Nebraska alums
- [00:01:47.520]who lead and runs restaurants
- [00:01:49.380]received the Business Leadership Award,
- [00:01:52.020]Dawn Amon, Donald Everett, Jr. and Renee Shulan.
- [00:01:56.790]Getting education at University of Nebraska
- [00:01:59.310]and the College of Business were really instrumental
- [00:02:02.010]in guiding our our leadership skills,
- [00:02:04.650]our critical thinking skills.
- [00:02:06.750]Early on, we had a lot of
- [00:02:08.520]what I would call struggling restaurants.
- [00:02:10.500]We had stores in Fremont, Grand Island, Columbus,
- [00:02:14.070]Scott's Bluff, Loveland, Colorado.
- [00:02:16.320]They were not making money,
- [00:02:17.550]but my father never gave up on any of those markets.
- [00:02:20.910]And to this day, we're still in those markets,
- [00:02:23.130]and not just in those markets, but thriving.
- [00:02:25.770]And that was an unintentional lesson,
- [00:02:27.870]I think, for us to be diligent
- [00:02:31.830]and put in a lot of hard work and hard effort.
- [00:02:34.980]And just recognize the challenges
- [00:02:37.530]that you have at each individual restaurant
- [00:02:39.720]and try and make them better.
- [00:02:41.970]And Jim Abel of NEBCO was honored
- [00:02:44.520]with a lifetime achievement award.
- [00:02:47.970]I never knew my grandfather,
- [00:02:50.100]but in reading the many tributes to him,
- [00:02:52.710]I've gathered a great sense of the person he was.
- [00:02:55.650]He represented both hard work
- [00:02:57.510]and a clear understanding of his business.
- [00:02:59.910]He was interested in his employees,
- [00:03:01.710]because he realized the importance of an organization.
- [00:03:05.070]He had vision and cared about his community.
- [00:03:07.980]These are all principles that I have remained committed to.
- [00:03:11.310]Hire good people, trust them.
- [00:03:13.560]Be loyal to them, they'll be loyal to you.
- [00:03:16.230]Leaders need to lead.
- [00:03:18.239](upbeat music)
- [00:03:19.500]Congratulations to our honorees.
- [00:03:22.140]They join an impressive list of recipients
- [00:03:24.990]like Warren Buffet, Alice Dittman,
- [00:03:27.630]Joanne Martin, and Sid Dinsdale.
- [00:03:31.530]For those of you already looking ahead to the fall,
- [00:03:34.920]our College of Business tailgate
- [00:03:36.810]will be Saturday, November 2nd.
- [00:03:39.600]All business alumni are invited
- [00:03:41.970]and we will be celebrating 60 years
- [00:03:44.460]of our MBA at Nebraska program.
- [00:03:47.970]It's a wonderful reason to come to campus,
- [00:03:50.460]visit Hawks Hall, and celebrate.
- [00:03:53.490]After all, once a Husker, always a Husker.
