- [00:00:03.400]Hello, everyone.
- [00:00:04.640]I'm Cody Hollis.
- [00:00:05.520]I am the Director of the Global Experiences Office located
- [00:00:09.206]within Global Affairs here at the university.
- [00:00:12.560]I'm going to introduce Global Experiences and share a little
- [00:00:16.042]bit with you about the things that we do and the things we
- [00:00:19.410]hope that the students who are here at UNL will take part,
- [00:00:22.778]participate in, and take part in.
- [00:00:25.320]We're located in Louise # Hall as part of the Global Education
- [00:00:31.629]Center, housed within which is housed Global Affairs and Global
- [00:00:38.038]Experiences.
- [00:00:39.240]Office is in charge of student experiences in all kinds of
- [00:00:43.120]global settings, and I'll explain a little bit about that.
- [00:00:47.760]We have a really great space here.
- [00:00:50.960]You'll see that the front desk where people will always be
- [00:00:54.890]there to help you answer questions for you and and help
- [00:00:58.620]direct you in the right way, it's located right across from
- [00:01:02.617]an atrium that is a really great place for students to study and
- [00:01:06.947]spend time.
- [00:01:07.680]And so we hope that you'll come and visit us here and that
- [00:01:11.977]you'll get a vision of the things that we do and the many
- [00:01:16.202]global opportunities that exist here at UNL.
- [00:01:19.480]I'm going to explain some of those today, but I'll briefly
- [00:01:23.539]introduce our Global Experiences Office.
- [00:01:26.680]Our office is dedicated to working with faculty, staff, and
- [00:01:31.192]entities around campus to enable students to have all kinds of
- [00:01:35.930]global experiences.
- [00:01:37.840]And we really work hard to try to make sure that those global
- [00:01:42.549]experiences are accessible and that people have both access to
- [00:01:47.334]and the ability to access those resources.
- [00:01:51.080]So I'll explain a little bit about who our office is.
- [00:01:53.880]Again, I am the Director of Global Experiences and formerly
- [00:01:58.793]or continue to be tied to my department home.
- [00:02:02.560]I'm a faculty member in Child Youth and Family Studies and do
- [00:02:07.438]a lot of work with mental health and families and have spent a
- [00:02:12.396]lot of time doing research in Brazil, engage a lot there in
- [00:02:17.117]research and in study abroad.
- [00:02:19.400]And so I've taken numerous groups of students there and I'm
- [00:02:23.440]just really love Brazil and love students and the learning that
- [00:02:27.750]takes place through study abroad.
- [00:02:30.040]And I think that that's one of the reasons that I'm tied to
- [00:02:32.963]this office and trying to help move that forward.
- [00:02:36.040]We have a really great office with tremendous experience.
- [00:02:39.760]Kate Offtenkamp is the assistant Director.
- [00:02:42.720]She's been in study abroad at UNL for quite a while, several
- [00:02:47.109]years, really knows how to get people to where they need to be
- [00:02:51.643]and how to enable them to have access to and get to experience
- [00:02:56.177]the many opportunities that come with study abroad.
- [00:03:00.600]Claire Smith is our operations coordinator.
- [00:03:02.520]The operations coordinator takes care of most things, financial
- [00:03:07.697]and logistical contracts.
- [00:03:10.320]She's also in charge of things like billing and scholarships,
- [00:03:14.409]and so she'll make sure that if you receive a scholarship that
- [00:03:18.565]it gets put on your bill so it'll defray the cost of your
- [00:03:22.390]study abroad experiences.
- [00:03:24.680]Rabeska Baskerville has been at study abroad at UNL for over a
- [00:03:30.026]decade now.
- [00:03:30.960]Works really, to coordinate Peace Corps prep program and the
- [00:03:35.151]programs within honours.
- [00:03:37.800]She's been a big part of UNL study abroad for a long time.
- [00:03:43.320]Sabrina Albiero is a coordinator for three different colleges.
- [00:03:49.240]She's a coordinator for the College of Journalism, Mass
- [00:03:52.089]Communication, the Hickson Lead College of Fine and Performing
- [00:03:55.295]Arts, and the College of Architecture.
- [00:03:57.640]And so if you're a student, or if you are a student and you're
- [00:04:00.506]going to any of those colleges, she'll be the coordinator that
- [00:04:03.373]you talk to.
- [00:04:04.440]The way that we have structured this, as you'll see as I
- [00:04:07.882]introduce people, is that each college has a coordinator
- [00:04:11.324]dedicated to the work in that college.
- [00:04:13.680]And so if your student, or if you are a student and you're
- [00:04:17.146]connected with one of those colleges, you know who to go to
- [00:04:20.671]for help.
- [00:04:21.600]The other reason that this is valuable is that those
- [00:04:24.716]coordinators become very familiar with what goes on in
- [00:04:27.950]the colleges and very familiar with what the colleges need and
- [00:04:31.654]what students need in their experience abroad as it relates
- [00:04:35.182]to their professional development.
- [00:04:37.560]One of the critical things to know about the study abroad is
- [00:04:42.286]that it's not just a chance for travel and experience of
- [00:04:46.702]vacation.
- [00:04:47.560]This is a time for professional development, and so we work very
- [00:04:52.260]hard to make sure that the experiences that every student
- [00:04:56.454]has is critically tied to your professional goals, that you get
- [00:05:01.082]to work in another location on the professional goals that you
- [00:05:05.638]have.
- [00:05:07.080]Trish Manga is in charge of the College of Engineering and the
- [00:05:12.406]College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, and she
- [00:05:17.816]works with both of those colleges to help those programs.
- [00:05:23.800]Both colleges run some really great programs.
- [00:05:26.800]Renee Newman is the coordinator for College of Arts and Sciences
- [00:05:31.094]and this is one of our largest or the largest college on campus
- [00:05:35.323]in terms of numbers of students and departments and they run a
- [00:05:39.485]diversity of programs including the language programs.
- [00:05:43.120]And so that's a college that's very active in study abroad and
- [00:05:47.338]a lot of students from other colleges will engage with
- [00:05:51.021]programs that are tied to language and and other
- [00:05:54.302]opportunities.
- [00:05:55.240]So they do a lot there.
- [00:05:57.280]Ashley Wallace is in charge of the College of Business and
- [00:06:01.036]Ashley does a lot of help with other programs around campus.
- [00:06:05.640]The Trio McNair cast a lot of the Explore Center programs, so
- [00:06:10.208]a lot of the other programs that provide support to students on
- [00:06:14.924]campus.
- [00:06:15.800]Ashley's a coordinator that helps with that.
- [00:06:18.360]So Kyung is the coordinator for the College of Education Human
- [00:06:22.822]Sciences and coordinates the work that they do both in terms
- [00:06:27.143]of the study abroad.
- [00:06:29.080]They also have teaching abroad programs and and other
- [00:06:32.596]opportunities and I will talk about the different kinds of
- [00:06:36.439]opportunities that exist here in a second.
- [00:06:39.920]The other thing that I want to point out is the global
- [00:06:43.357]experience in this group.
- [00:06:44.920]I've already mentioned that I do research in Brazil, but we have
- [00:06:51.180]staff in our office that have extensive experience abroad and
- [00:06:57.151]many of our staff members are immigrants to the US.
- [00:07:02.160]They were born in different countries, Sabrina from France,
- [00:07:06.505]Trish from Zimbabwe and Sok Yung from South Korea.
- [00:07:10.800]We have members who have lived extensively and another member
- [00:07:15.349]that has lived of our staff that has lived extensively in South
- [00:07:20.044]Korea, in Japan, in many parts of England.
- [00:07:24.080]So we have a lot of experience of both living and working and
- [00:07:29.857]learning in different locations.
- [00:07:32.840]And I think that that really helps as we work with students
- [00:07:36.647]preparing to go and as we work with students who are coming
- [00:07:40.454]back from their experience and trying to make sense of how do I
- [00:07:44.515]talk about this life changing experience that I've had in a
- [00:07:48.323]way that a potential employer understands why this makes me a
- [00:07:52.257]better employee for their office and their the place that they
- [00:07:56.255]want to work.
- [00:07:58.640]There's many different types of programs.
- [00:08:01.560]One of those is faculty LED programs.
- [00:08:04.160]We run lots of these 50 + a year where our faculty members take
- [00:08:08.474]students with them to different part of the world most of the
- [00:08:12.654]time, a part of the world that they either grew up and lived in
- [00:08:16.969]or a part of the world that they do a lot of research in.
- [00:08:21.040]And so because my research is in Brazil, I take students to
- [00:08:24.944]Brazil.
- [00:08:26.520]And so the faculty LED programs are an opportunity for students
- [00:08:30.703]to have continuity between the classes that they have here on
- [00:08:34.756]campus and their experience abroad and then upon return
- [00:08:38.417]tying that back to their degree and the things that they're
- [00:08:42.339]studying to do.
- [00:08:43.680]And so those faculty LED programs are great
- [00:08:47.017]opportunities.
- [00:08:48.280]Usually faculty LED programs are short term.
- [00:08:51.440]A lot of those happen in the summer or during the winter
- [00:08:55.420]break.
- [00:08:56.560]But there are other types of programs that are more extensive
- [00:09:00.167]faculty LED programs for really, really great educational
- [00:09:03.541]experiences.
- [00:09:05.160]Affiliated programs are where we have an agreement, an
- [00:09:08.528]affiliation agreement with a company that runs a program in a
- [00:09:12.325]different part of the world.
- [00:09:14.040]And sometimes these are large companies that run lots of
- [00:09:17.429]programs around the world and they have a lot of resources to
- [00:09:21.116]support in terms of insurance and security and everything like
- [00:09:24.862]that.
- [00:09:25.440]And I'll talk about safety and security more here in a minute.
- [00:09:27.960]But these are programs that have a lot of capacity to place
- [00:09:31.547]students in different parts of the world, especially for longer
- [00:09:35.374]term experiences like an entire semester or an entire academic
- [00:09:39.141]year.
- [00:09:40.360]Exchange programs are where we have a relationship with another
- [00:09:43.786]university and they send students to us and we send
- [00:09:46.569]students to them.
- [00:09:48.000]One example is for 20 plus years we've had an exchange program
- [00:09:52.742]with Senchu in Japan and they send students who come and study
- [00:09:57.485]for semester here.
- [00:09:59.280]Our students go and study there.
- [00:10:00.960]That's primarily in business and in Arts and Sciences, in
- [00:10:05.731]Japanese language and culture.
- [00:10:09.000]And so that's where a student then would would pay the
- [00:10:13.059]equivalent of tuition, room and board at UNL, and then they
- [00:10:17.488]would be taking classes at that Sen Shu institution.
- [00:10:22.920]And then Sen Shu sends students to come and spend time here on
- [00:10:28.014]our campus to do the reverse.
- [00:10:31.600]We're also trying to really build out local and virtual
- [00:10:35.390]programs.
- [00:10:36.400]And these programs are because we realize and recognize that
- [00:10:40.846]there are lots of global experiences and global
- [00:10:44.344]communities all around us.
- [00:10:46.680]And so it doesn't take a student getting on a plane and going
- [00:10:50.485]somewhere to have a global experience.
- [00:10:52.880]They can do that right here in Lincoln.
- [00:10:55.600]And that can happen because they're engaging with an
- [00:10:58.759]immigrant or refugee population here in Lincoln.
- [00:11:01.920]But it can also happen because the coursework that they're
- [00:11:05.631]doing is tied to another university through the faculty
- [00:11:09.153]that they are having class from and that that other university,
- [00:11:13.179]they get to engage with people from different parts of the
- [00:11:16.890]world And.
- [00:11:17.800]And so I'll talk a little bit about some of those different
- [00:11:20.955]opportunities that we create for students as well here in a
- [00:11:24.111]minute.
- [00:11:25.160]We also have some remote internships.
- [00:11:27.080]And these are these are fascinating opportunities that
- [00:11:30.296]students have to engage with companies around the world in
- [00:11:33.747]the discipline that they're in.
- [00:11:35.960]And they do that virtually.
- [00:11:38.600]But it functions just like an internship where they get the
- [00:11:42.200]kind of work experience that they're looking for without
- [00:11:45.620]leaving campus, but they get to engage and work in a company
- [00:11:49.280]that is international.
- [00:11:51.080]You'll see that we have some some QR codes here, please scan
- [00:11:55.056]and that'll take you to information on our website that
- [00:11:58.706]will give you a lot more details about this.
- [00:12:03.640]The other thing that's really important is financing these
- [00:12:06.634]opportunities is always critical.
- [00:12:08.560]It's necessary.
- [00:12:09.760]Part of what students need to be thinking about is how am I going
- [00:12:13.365]to pay for this experience.
- [00:12:16.240]We try very hard to find programs that are cost
- [00:12:19.451]effective.
- [00:12:21.320]There's a number of programs that we have identified that are
- [00:12:25.655]at or below the cost of staying on campus and paying for UNL
- [00:12:29.920]housing.
- [00:12:30.480]And so that is in an effort to try to say, you know, you can
- [00:12:34.140]spend a semester abroad for a roughly the same amount that you
- [00:12:37.920]can stay here for.
- [00:12:40.120]That's not to diminish or dismiss the importance of being
- [00:12:44.273]on campus and having that academic experience here, but it
- [00:12:48.498]does offer students the opportunity to see a different
- [00:12:52.436]perspective in trying to support those experiences.
- [00:12:56.360]We have a number of different scholarship mechanisms
- [00:13:00.153]internally and then a number of different scholarships that are
- [00:13:04.734]that we help students with and national and federal and college
- [00:13:09.315]specific.
- [00:13:10.320]The ones that are offered by our office by the global experiences
- [00:13:13.358]office is we have a global experiences planning
- [00:13:15.567]scholarship.
- [00:13:16.640]And this is because we know that students often times need to
- [00:13:19.987]know well in advance how much money something is gonna cost so
- [00:13:23.388]they can raise the rest of the money.
- [00:13:26.040]And so this scholarship, what we're trying to do is we're
- [00:13:29.496]trying to allow students to be able to plan for in advance and
- [00:13:33.250]it gives a student $3000 and they have three years to use
- [00:13:36.706]that scholarship.
- [00:13:38.280]That scholarship is primarily needs based.
- [00:13:41.040]So we're really trying to target students who wouldn't otherwise
- [00:13:44.371]be able to afford to go abroad.
- [00:13:46.360]But if we give them this $3000 and they know I have three years
- [00:13:50.006]to use it, they can start to to pull together the rest of the
- [00:13:53.538]money to help that help fill that out.
- [00:13:55.760]And there's a math scholarship and there's number of different
- [00:13:59.550]foundation scholarships that fall under this map scholarship.
- [00:14:03.280]And these are a scholarship that the students apply for in the
- [00:14:06.263]semester that they're going to be going abroad or during the
- [00:14:09.152]application time of them going abroad.
- [00:14:11.000]So right before they go abroad and during that time, you
- [00:14:14.953]identify the location.
- [00:14:16.480]There are some scholarships that we have that are for specific
- [00:14:19.483]locations.
- [00:14:20.480]And so depending on where in the world that they go, they're
- [00:14:23.659]eligible to receive that scholarship.
- [00:14:25.680]The Edith Weber Scholarship is a good example of one of those
- [00:14:28.573]types of scholarships.
- [00:14:29.600]This scholarship is for language acquisition.
- [00:14:32.840]So these are students who are going somewhere in the world to
- [00:14:35.687]learn the language.
- [00:14:36.560]And it's not limited to a specific language or a specific
- [00:14:39.215]part of the world.
- [00:14:40.520]It's just students who part of their goal is to learn a
- [00:14:45.448]language.
- [00:14:46.240]And this comes from a really great endowment by the Edith
- [00:14:51.356]Weber's family.
- [00:14:53.160]Edith was a real great ambassador for learning and
- [00:14:56.475]living abroad and living and learning from different people
- [00:15:00.375]around the world.
- [00:15:01.480]And her family, in her honor, created a endowment.
- [00:15:05.640]And they give scholarships to students who are wanting to
- [00:15:08.713]learn the language.
- [00:15:10.360]They give numerous scholarships every year, and they're just a
- [00:15:14.441]really wonderful opportunity.
- [00:15:16.600]And so these are some of the types of scholarships that exist
- [00:15:21.266]that we offer.
- [00:15:22.320]Colleges also offer scholarships.
- [00:15:25.360]And those scholarships will be either some of those the
- [00:15:28.631]students will apply directly with us and some scholarships
- [00:15:32.078]they have to apply in their college.
- [00:15:34.240]And so it kind of depends.
- [00:15:36.520]When I introduce our staff, the staff will tell you in your
- [00:15:40.573]college what types of scholarships are available and
- [00:15:44.154]how you get access to and how you apply for those.
- [00:15:48.000]There's also national scholarships.
- [00:15:49.640]There's a scholarship called the Bourne Scholarship and other
- [00:15:54.172]scholarships that are national scholarships that we end up
- [00:15:58.484]getting numerous national scholarships every year and we
- [00:16:02.651]try to help provide support for students who are preparing to go
- [00:16:07.402]abroad and preparing to apply for those.
- [00:16:10.760]One specific one is the Gilman Scholarship and that offer that
- [00:16:15.658]offers the student up to $5000 for Pell eligible students and
- [00:16:20.478]that scholarship.
- [00:16:21.800]We've had a lot of success in having students receive that
- [00:16:25.418]scholarship with numerous students every year and we have
- [00:16:28.976]planning times where we sit down with students and we help them
- [00:16:32.901]prepare for those scholarship applications.
- [00:16:37.960]I think one of the important things is to think bigger
- [00:16:42.750]picture than the travel part of this and then the the expenses
- [00:16:48.237]of it.
- [00:16:48.760]But think about what are the benefits of going abroad.
- [00:16:52.200]And I think one of the important parts of this is that we know
- [00:16:56.744]that the world is becoming an ever increasingly more and more
- [00:17:01.216]diverse and our markets become more and more global.
- [00:17:05.600]And so one of the things that that students who go abroad
- [00:17:09.355]learn is they learn how to both professionally and personally
- [00:17:13.369]and interpersonally engage with and work with people from
- [00:17:17.124]another culture.
- [00:17:18.560]And this can really build on their experience while they're
- [00:17:22.117]here because they can see that the content that they're
- [00:17:25.437]learning in the classroom about whatever the profession that
- [00:17:29.053]they're seeking has application and utility outside of the work
- [00:17:32.847]environment here in the United States.
- [00:17:36.200]It also helps not only for them to look at how it might look in
- [00:17:40.068]a different place, but it it it opens their eyes to the
- [00:17:43.452]different opportunities in the different places and the
- [00:17:46.837]different people that might engage that they might engage
- [00:17:50.342]with while they're abroad, not while they're abroad, but while
- [00:17:54.150]they're professionals.
- [00:17:56.480]And it helps build kind of professional relationships in in
- [00:17:59.881]ways that most students didn't even know was possible.
- [00:18:03.600]There's so many benefits that we really encourage students to
- [00:18:08.033]think about and to work with their coordinators, to really
- [00:18:12.252]think, Why is this beneficial for the degree that I want?
- [00:18:16.680]Why, as a mechanical engineer, would I want to do this?
- [00:18:19.720]Or why, if I'm learning flute performance, would this benefit
- [00:18:23.945]me in the long run?
- [00:18:25.600]Or what does this do for me as I want to be a teacher and so we
- [00:18:29.707]really want to help students tie whatever their goal is
- [00:18:33.301]professionally to what they can learn as they go abroad.
- [00:18:38.960]Health and safety is a a really critical piece.
- [00:18:41.320]One of the most important parts of what we do is to ensure that
- [00:18:45.496]students are prepared to be successful in their trip abroad
- [00:18:49.412]and the program that they're engaged in there.
- [00:18:52.840]And so especially during that travel moments of the time,
- [00:18:56.090]leaving here and arriving there, we want to make sure that
- [00:18:59.397]they're prepared for everything that they're going to go
- [00:19:02.591]through.
- [00:19:03.440]But even once they're there, we want to make sure that they
- [00:19:06.979]understand the local setting, that they have all of the things
- [00:19:10.695]that they need to be sensitized to the local norms and that they
- [00:19:14.530]can be prepared for all that that's gonna entail.
- [00:19:17.680]We always ensure that students have international health
- [00:19:20.708]insurance.
- [00:19:21.240]So anything that happens as minor as a cut to even more
- [00:19:26.034]severe a broken leg or anything like that, that's always
- [00:19:30.915]covered.
- [00:19:31.600]So that health insurance, all students who go abroad are
- [00:19:35.456]covered internationally.
- [00:19:38.040]And and that's a really important piece.
- [00:19:41.040]We always have an in country emergency point in contact.
- [00:19:44.240]So every program students will know who they need to contact if
- [00:19:48.761]they have an issue or if they're not feeling well, they know what
- [00:19:53.425]to do when they when they get there and and how to be
- [00:19:57.240]successful at that we provide.
- [00:19:59.360]So students who are here on campus?
- [00:20:02.520]We provide info sessions every week, Huskers abroad, 101 and
- [00:20:06.912]102.
- [00:20:07.520]The first one talks about kind of how do you think about going
- [00:20:11.102]abroad and what you can learn and what you need to be thinking
- [00:20:14.685]about professionally.
- [00:20:16.160]And 102 talks a lot about how do you fund it.
- [00:20:19.280]And so it really goes deep into the costs associated with it and
- [00:20:23.527]scholarships and applying for scholarships, other types of
- [00:20:27.382]events.
- [00:20:27.840]I talked about the Gilman Scholarship.
- [00:20:29.600]So we have events throughout the year to have Gilman writing labs
- [00:20:33.575]where we offer to help students write the essays that they're
- [00:20:37.309]using to apply for those Gilman scholarships.
- [00:20:40.080]We have a couple of people on our staff who help review Gilman
- [00:20:44.736]scholarships for the National Foundation.
- [00:20:48.240]And so that gives them a great ability to walk our students
- [00:20:52.125]through what they need to be thinking about when they're
- [00:20:55.817]applying.
- [00:20:57.320]We have a study abroad speed dating event where we get people
- [00:21:00.669]together who have gone abroad in previous semesters and we invite
- [00:21:04.234]everybody who is thinking about going abroad.
- [00:21:06.960]And then we just have them spend a couple of minutes with each
- [00:21:09.716]person talking about lessons learned and things that they
- [00:21:12.254]wish they would have done, more of, things they wish they might
- [00:21:15.054]have been more prepared for.
- [00:21:16.560]It's just a really great kind of get to know what to expect.
- [00:21:21.960]So that's a really great thing.
- [00:21:24.040]Global Connection series is another event that we that we
- [00:21:28.739]use to talk about and help students engage with those who
- [00:21:33.438]have been abroad to understand, to understand how to better be
- [00:21:38.543]better prepared.
- [00:21:40.360]The story slam is a fun thing students when they come back.
- [00:21:43.680]We have in the union, we have an event where people who've gone
- [00:21:47.233]abroad can share really short stories about a 5 minute story
- [00:21:50.619]on something that happened to them while they were there.
- [00:21:54.160]And that's just a really great time to kind of see people's
- [00:21:57.275]experience and and hear about some of the amazing things that
- [00:22:00.494]they've done and that they want to do.
- [00:22:03.240]We have a luggage run where they learn quickly that the lighter
- [00:22:07.027]you can pack, the better you are.
- [00:22:09.400]And so these are kinds of events that we do throughout the year.
- [00:22:13.720]Here's, you know, a couple of things and and you can read
- [00:22:17.320]these stories as I talk for a second.
- [00:22:19.680]I won't read them for you, but just some quotes by students who
- [00:22:23.472]have been abroad.
- [00:22:25.280]And I think as a faculty leader who's taken a group of students.
- [00:22:29.560]I think one of the things for me is it it's really amazing to me
- [00:22:33.630]to sit in an airport and as we're leaving the country and
- [00:22:37.263]see those students who, some of which have never been on a
- [00:22:40.958]plane, never been outside the USA, lot of which have never
- [00:22:44.653]been outside the US, to sit there with them and to see the
- [00:22:48.348]kind of nervousness and excitement in their eyes.
- [00:22:51.480]And then be in Brazil and we'll be at A at a beach or something.
- [00:22:56.840]And they'll, you know, say something like I can't believe
- [00:23:01.196]I'm here or we'll be in a really unique part of Brazil that looks
- [00:23:06.153]at the way families function in that part of the world.
- [00:23:10.960]And and they'll get to know people and they'll say, you
- [00:23:13.742]know, I can't believe I'm living with a Brazilian family here and
- [00:23:17.021]I have a Brazilian mother and a Brazilian father and Brazilian
- [00:23:20.152]siblings and and we have to play charades to get along with each
- [00:23:23.381]other.
- [00:23:23.680]But I know they love me and they know they care about me and and
- [00:23:27.746]and then to sit with them on the ride home in the plane and and
- [00:23:31.750]have students be tearful because of how much they loved their,
- [00:23:35.691]the Brazilian family that they stayed with for two weeks.
- [00:23:39.320]And how much they got to know them and how they never realized
- [00:23:42.749]how much they could love a place.
- [00:23:45.040]And having been there such a short amount of time, most of
- [00:23:48.265]the students I take are gonna be students that are gonna go on to
- [00:23:51.873]work with other families.
- [00:23:53.240]And so this ability to connect and engage with families who's
- [00:23:56.687]really powerful in their future jobs.
- [00:23:59.120]But the same could be said of other jobs where people talk
- [00:24:03.108]about, you know, I never realized how much our
- [00:24:06.285]engineering field is influenced by the research and the work
- [00:24:10.409]that goes on and the development that goes on in all these
- [00:24:14.397]different locations, or how we can use the work that we're
- [00:24:18.386]developing as we reach out and try to build resources and
- [00:24:22.307]strength in other locations.
- [00:24:24.200]So such powerful experiences for students, it's just it's a
- [00:24:28.113]wonderful thing to be a part of.
- [00:24:32.040]Coming back to this, I I'm really grateful to be a part of
- [00:24:36.912]helping students experience something like this.
- [00:24:41.640]I know that when I talk to students, those who have been
- [00:24:44.889]abroad, some of the greatest experiences that they have while
- [00:24:48.423]they're at the university is their time abroad.
- [00:24:51.680]And I just think it's a wonderful thing for students to
- [00:24:54.865]be able to see beyond what they currently see and learn to
- [00:24:58.221]understand beyond what they're currently understanding and and
- [00:25:01.805]see that in a way that they can tie it to their professional
- [00:25:05.275]life.
- [00:25:05.560]And and I think that that's an amazing experience as part of as
- [00:25:10.069]their growth and their development and they can engage
- [00:25:13.944]and use that as they move forward in the work that they do
- [00:25:18.101]beyond their time here and beyond the time at the
- [00:25:21.624]university.
- [00:25:23.120]I'm really grateful to be able to be a part of this and to be a
- [00:25:27.360]part of the journey that they have and I hope that they will
- [00:25:31.401]come and see us so we can help them move forward in finding
- [00:25:35.377]ways that they can do that in the future.
