- [00:00:00.080]Thank you for taking the time to review this resource provided to
- [00:00:03.266]you in collaboration with new student enrollment.
- [00:00:05.960]We're excited to welcome you and your students to the Hustler
- [00:00:09.494]community this fall and it's my pleasure to introduce you to the
- [00:00:13.200]exploratory and pre professional advising center commonly known
- [00:00:16.848]as the Explorer Center.
- [00:00:18.920]Here's where we're going to go today.
- [00:00:20.800]First, I want to introduce you fully to the Explorer Center.
- [00:00:24.080]You'll see how we are unique from our academic colleges and
- [00:00:27.494]the way that we help you move forward in your academic career.
- [00:00:31.360]And after that, I'll speak more in depth and how we're going to
- [00:00:34.492]support you.
- [00:00:35.960]And I want to introduce you to the tools and the resources that
- [00:00:39.747]we're going to use to take you from deciding and dreaming to
- [00:00:43.357]decided and planning.
- [00:00:44.640]That's where we're going next.
- [00:00:46.640]You'll learn a little bit more about the roles in our office
- [00:00:50.356]and the people that are ready to partner with you and helping you
- [00:00:54.378]gain traction towards your own success as a student on our
- [00:00:57.973]campus.
- [00:00:58.400]And then finally I'll spend some time helping you prepare to get
- [00:01:01.975]the most out of your advising appointment with us here over
- [00:01:05.275]the summer.
- [00:01:05.880]So let's go ahead and get started.
- [00:01:11.480]So the Explore Center Who are we?
- [00:01:14.080]Well, in the Explore Center our mission is all centered on your
- [00:01:17.844]success as a student.
- [00:01:19.720]We are here and we exist to empower the deciding and pre
- [00:01:24.220]professional student to do 2 things, thrive academically and
- [00:01:29.036]cultivate career ready confidence.
- [00:01:33.800]Now first thing you should also know about the explore center is
- [00:01:38.133]that we are the academic home for students who are undeclared,
- [00:01:42.333]which means like 1/4 of our incoming class and like 50 to 7%
- [00:01:46.400]nationally of students across the nation.
- [00:01:50.280]You're amongst good company in the Explore Center.
- [00:01:53.680]We our experience has shown that you don't have to have today
- [00:01:57.191]figured out to be successful tomorrow.
- [00:01:59.640]That's really a mantra that we like to operate off of here in
- [00:02:02.577]the Explore Center, Undeclared students.
- [00:02:04.560]You are in the process of deciding and you're in that
- [00:02:08.774]process of self discovery in that exploring of possibilities
- [00:02:13.536]that align with your individual skills, interests and your own
- [00:02:18.453]talent.
- [00:02:19.320]And so we'll become the home for you until you end up choosing a
- [00:02:23.281]major in one of our nine academic colleges across our
- [00:02:26.573]campus.
- [00:02:27.680]We also serve students who help to apply to professional school
- [00:02:30.986]one day.
- [00:02:31.800]This includes our students who are interested in Pre Health
- [00:02:34.982]Pathways or in pre Law Pathways.
- [00:02:37.280]In addition to that, we are also the advising home for students
- [00:02:40.838]who are working on entrance requirements into another
- [00:02:43.840]college that has additional entrance requirements such as
- [00:02:47.065]the College of Engineering and I'll talk a little bit more
- [00:02:50.345]about that here shortly.
- [00:02:52.160]Now something that is unique to us is that we in the Explore
- [00:02:55.857]Center provide support and we connect students across multiple
- [00:02:59.675]areas of study, across multiple areas of campus and community
- [00:03:03.433]resources.
- [00:03:04.040]So you can consider us the expert generalists who know a
- [00:03:07.812]heck of a lot about the resources and connections that
- [00:03:11.451]will matter to you most.
- [00:03:16.360]Now our undeclared students, and think about this and who you
- [00:03:19.336]might be as you're listening to this.
- [00:03:21.640]They can be undeclared in a few ways.
- [00:03:23.600]Now some students are undeclared because they literally have no
- [00:03:27.044]idea what they want us to, what they want to study, and they
- [00:03:30.327]need some help identifying what's out there and even
- [00:03:33.179]creating a list to even work from, right.
- [00:03:36.000]Some students are are undeclared because they have maybe a list
- [00:03:40.001]of two or three majors.
- [00:03:41.680]They just need some time to explore and see which one of
- [00:03:45.453]those tends to suit them best.
- [00:03:48.440]Some students are also undeclared because they intend
- [00:03:51.404]to declare a major in a College in which they have to meet
- [00:03:54.642]additional requirements.
- [00:03:56.200]And that's the case for students, for example, who are
- [00:03:58.585]pre engineering.
- [00:03:59.280]And so you may find yourself in here today as a student who is
- [00:04:02.412]pre engineering, and that may be you today.
- [00:04:05.000]Now we're here to support all of you exactly where you're at, and
- [00:04:09.369]our approach is not a one-size-fits-all approach.
- [00:04:12.960]Rather, it's tailored to where you are and and where we need to
- [00:04:16.848]start with you.
- [00:04:19.440]And so here's how we will empower you.
- [00:04:22.320]First, if you're an undeclared student, we want to help you
- [00:04:26.760]explore, identify, and declare a major.
- [00:04:29.720]That's our goal, right?
- [00:04:31.280]We have the knowledge and we have the resources to help you
- [00:04:35.011]navigate the more than 150 majors that exist in our campus
- [00:04:38.680]that could be overwhelming.
- [00:04:40.640]We know how to narrow that down for you.
- [00:04:42.720]We'll make use of assessment tools and interests interviewing
- [00:04:46.950]to help you define academic, career, and personal goals.
- [00:04:51.400]And I promise you, we will use every tool at our disposal to
- [00:04:55.152]help you engage in efficient academic planning and help you
- [00:04:58.843]remain on track to graduate in time.
- [00:05:01.400]And on that note, a sigh of relief for the students and I'm
- [00:05:04.276]sure some parents and guardians who might be listening and on
- [00:05:07.249]this portion of it.
- [00:05:09.800]Now let's talk about students who are considering a career in
- [00:05:12.172]health.
- [00:05:13.040]We support you as well now, your undergraduate years.
- [00:05:16.480]They're just the first step in your journey towards the career
- [00:05:19.494]that you envision for yourself, right?
- [00:05:21.880]We advise over 19 different health areas and our team.
- [00:05:26.440]We're focused on preparing you for admission into those schools
- [00:05:30.524]by connecting you to our network of professional schools through
- [00:05:34.672]what we call PSVS, which means professional school visits where
- [00:05:38.756]we invite schools like Brian Health and UNMC to come in and
- [00:05:42.585]host the time in our office where you get to meet with them
- [00:05:46.413]one-on-one to discuss the entrance processes into their
- [00:05:49.987]respective schools.
- [00:05:52.120]Meanwhile, during your time with the Explorer Center, our well
- [00:05:56.086]resourced and knowledgeable team of academic advisors will help
- [00:06:00.115]you identify the necessary prerequisite courses.
- [00:06:03.600]These are certain courses that you need to have completed prior
- [00:06:07.097]to admission to many health schools.
- [00:06:09.360]We help you determine what those courses are, as well as any
- [00:06:12.824]other extracurricular experiences that will make you a
- [00:06:15.947]more competitive and ready candidate for the selection
- [00:06:19.071]process into your desired health school.
- [00:06:21.960]Now, the main thing to know about Pre Health at Nebraska is
- [00:06:25.281]that pre Health is not a major, right?
- [00:06:27.440]Say this with me.
- [00:06:28.160]Pre Health is not my major.
- [00:06:30.360]However, many of you will have a major while you're pursuing a
- [00:06:34.210]pre health prep plan, and the Explorer Center will focus on
- [00:06:37.877]the pre health side, where you're also going to have an
- [00:06:41.300]advisor helping you complete the requirements of your particular
- [00:06:45.273]major.
- [00:06:46.800]The nice thing is, you can major in anything while you're on a
- [00:06:50.098]pre health prep plan, but we can help you determine which of the
- [00:06:53.501]majors have the most overlap with the prerequisite courses
- [00:06:56.590]that you'll need to take, and that's something we can help you
- [00:06:59.888]navigate.
- [00:07:02.720]Now, for those who are thinking about a career in law, we also
- [00:07:05.426]help you prepare for admission into law school, and so it looks
- [00:07:08.175]a little different than our pre health students.
- [00:07:10.600]Now, during your time at UNL, you'll focus mainly on
- [00:07:14.050]developing and demonstrating your writing, communication,
- [00:07:17.825]critical thinking, and analytical skills.
- [00:07:21.120]And the nice thing is you'll still have that freedom to major
- [00:07:24.426]in literally anything that you want.
- [00:07:26.720]We're not tracking any specific courses.
- [00:07:28.480]That's really not the way that you get into law school.
- [00:07:30.920]Rather it's really honing those skills and competencies that I
- [00:07:34.828]just talked about and obviously preparing for the LSAT, which is
- [00:07:38.862]a piece that we also include in our assistance for you now, just
- [00:07:42.895]like our pre health, pre Law is simply an advising category.
- [00:07:47.000]So students who are pre law in the Explore Center will also
- [00:07:50.272]work on declaring a major for themselves as well.
- [00:07:56.080]Now for all of these students in the Explore Center, one of the
- [00:07:59.770]premier programs we have is something I want to share with
- [00:08:03.173]you as a student in the Explore Center.
- [00:08:05.480]We are going to engage you in our proven process and this is
- [00:08:09.398]our commitment to a partnership with you to get you on track and
- [00:08:13.573]keep you on track towards your own success.
- [00:08:16.400]And this is the process that has helped countless students find
- [00:08:20.880]the right major and still graduate on time.
- [00:08:24.480]Now remember I said at the beginning that our mission is to
- [00:08:28.314]empower the deciding and a pre professional student to thrive
- [00:08:32.276]academically and cultivate career ready confidence.
- [00:08:36.080]So we want to partner with you to establish your pace, PACE.
- [00:08:41.920]Pace is your customized plan for academic and career exploration,
- [00:08:46.723]and this is our premier advising program that is designed to keep
- [00:08:51.527]you moving towards your academic and career goals.
- [00:08:56.120]Now your PACE meeting you'll notice, is going to be initiated
- [00:08:59.578]by a registration hold, and this registration hold keeps you from
- [00:09:03.259]moving forward and preventing you from enrolling in courses in
- [00:09:06.772]the upcoming semester.
- [00:09:08.840]No worries, don't freak out, you haven't done anything wrong with
- [00:09:12.781]this.
- [00:09:13.680]PACE is actually required for all Explore Center students, and
- [00:09:17.309]it includes at least one advising appointment each
- [00:09:20.247]semester that you are in the Explore Center.
- [00:09:23.560]During your semesterly Pace meeting, we will focus on four
- [00:09:27.064]things.
- [00:09:27.520]OK, four things #1 reflection and assessment.
- [00:09:31.960]We want to take time to identify where you're at, what's
- [00:09:35.348]important to you, and then talk about how we can use that
- [00:09:38.797]information to inform and connect you to some good next
- [00:09:42.126]steps right.
- [00:09:43.680]Two, we focus on setting goals, goals that are specific goals
- [00:09:47.714]that are measurable, actionable goals that are realistic and
- [00:09:51.684]time bound.
- [00:09:53.560]Three, we focus on addressing roadblocks now.
- [00:09:57.160]By identifying the things that are getting in our way, we can
- [00:10:00.752]establish a plan for how we're going to overcome them and
- [00:10:04.112]that's going to give you a greater sense of agencies you
- [00:10:07.415]navigate college.
- [00:10:09.080]And four, we focus on planning courses.
- [00:10:11.840]So this is where you get to make sure that your upcoming semester
- [00:10:15.917]schedule is ready to go.
- [00:10:17.400]So when it's time to register doing something called Priority
- [00:10:20.882]Registration, which is something you want to remember, you're
- [00:10:24.365]going to be ready to hit that enroll button and register in
- [00:10:27.735]your classes in the spring of 2025 or whenever spring is
- [00:10:30.937]coming up or semester is coming up.
- [00:10:35.000]So go ahead and be on the lookout for communication
- [00:10:37.862]regarding Pace during your advising appointment.
- [00:10:40.560]We'll have some more coming out to you.
- [00:10:44.400]All right.
- [00:10:44.760]So we talked about who we are.
- [00:10:47.240]We talked about why we're here and how we'll do what we do to
- [00:10:51.328]support you.
- [00:10:52.560]Next, I want to talk a little bit about who is going to be
- [00:10:55.411]partnering with you in this process.
- [00:10:57.440]OK, there's four critical players and the first one is a
- [00:11:02.336]part of the is your academic advisor.
- [00:11:07.000]Now, each Explore Center student is going to be assigned a
- [00:11:10.971]specific academic advisor, and academic advisors are the player
- [00:11:15.279]that provides you support on your particular academic
- [00:11:18.914]progress.
- [00:11:19.880]This might include things like course planning, navigating
- [00:11:23.397]academic policies, trying to figure out if a course can be
- [00:11:26.915]dropped or changed from a grade to pass.
- [00:11:29.360]No pass.
- [00:11:30.560]And they're the key ones that will help you develop your plan
- [00:11:33.891]as a part of your Your Pace meeting.
- [00:11:36.960]Another key player on your team is going to be our academic
- [00:11:39.702]Navigator.
- [00:11:40.640]And these individuals, they focus on helping you navigate
- [00:11:43.894]the bends and twists in the road that sometimes get students and
- [00:11:47.541]catch them off guard.
- [00:11:49.360]So they look down the road and much like a navigation, much
- [00:11:53.041]like navigation, they help you anticipate detours that are in
- [00:11:56.845]your route.
- [00:11:58.120]And so as you navigate your first years at UNL, just know
- [00:12:01.160]that this is a team of individuals and they may reach
- [00:12:03.990]out to you if they notice that there's something present,
- [00:12:07.030]there's a barrier in front of you that needs to be addressed.
- [00:12:10.280]Or that might be you struggling a certain course, or there may
- [00:12:13.312]be some holes in your account that need to be addressed, or
- [00:12:16.199]there may be something delaying you for registration coming up.
- [00:12:21.000]And so they'll be there to help you.
- [00:12:24.120]They're here to help you navigate those moments and help
- [00:12:27.510]you see your options.
- [00:12:28.760]And so, parents, guardians, if you're wondering how your
- [00:12:32.269]student is going to navigate the unexpected, just know that
- [00:12:35.964]there's someone who's here going to be looking out for them.
- [00:12:39.800]Students, if you're feeling that stress and anxiety at all, just
- [00:12:43.637]know that we have people specifically looking out for
- [00:12:46.825]those kinds of things now.
- [00:12:48.360]A third key player is our career advisor, and our career advisor
- [00:12:52.434]will help you take your major expiration to the next level and
- [00:12:56.384]help you make some connections to careers.
- [00:12:59.600]Also, our career advisor can assist with resumes, cover
- [00:13:02.757]letters, and mock interviews, which is especially valuable for
- [00:13:06.309]those pre health and pre law students as you're preparing for
- [00:13:09.804]admission into those schools.
- [00:13:11.440]Because we're able to give you feedback through the perspective
- [00:13:15.242]and lens of someone trying to get into a health school or into
- [00:13:18.986]law school.
- [00:13:21.000]And then here's the final key player, the most important
- [00:13:23.711]player of it all.
- [00:13:24.800]And that's you, You, the student.
- [00:13:27.800]You are the most critical player on this play, on this team, and
- [00:13:32.596]I am challenging you to commit, to stay engaged in the process.
- [00:13:37.760]I guarantee there will never be anyone more responsible to your
- [00:13:42.016]success than yourself.
- [00:13:44.120]We can have all the best programming and support
- [00:13:46.692]available, but you have to show up and engage.
- [00:13:49.680]And so my challenge to you today is to show up on this process.
- [00:13:53.960]This is your education.
- [00:13:55.760]You deserve to be here.
- [00:13:56.840]You belong here.
- [00:13:58.400]We're ready for you, and we look forward to supporting you along
- [00:14:02.366]this journey.
- [00:14:05.120]All right, we're just about finished up here.
- [00:14:08.080]Before we conclude, here are a few things that you need to know
- [00:14:11.659]to help you get the most out of your advising appointment.
- [00:14:15.320]Now, when you register for your advising appointment, you can
- [00:14:18.736]choose in person or virtual.
- [00:14:20.800]You should plan for your appointment to last anywhere
- [00:14:24.040]from 45 to 60 minutes.
- [00:14:25.720]Now, if you're joining us virtually, here's some words of
- [00:14:28.682]advice.
- [00:14:29.360]Please plan to be set up in a quiet space and have a laptop or
- [00:14:34.117]desktop that you can join on Zoom.
- [00:14:37.600]We highly discourage trying to join your advising appointment
- [00:14:41.043]from a phone, especially if you're going to be out and about
- [00:14:44.431]and especially if you're driving.
- [00:14:46.320]We don't want to promote distracted driving.
- [00:14:49.240]Now, prior to your appointment, you'll want to be sure to have
- [00:14:52.574]taken the time to complete 2 steps.
- [00:14:54.960]One is complete your advising inventory, and two, make sure
- [00:14:58.654]you've taken any placement exams, including especially the
- [00:15:02.288]Math placement exam.
- [00:15:03.840]That'll be really critical as we plan your first semester
- [00:15:08.613]schedule together, all right.
- [00:15:11.880]Lastly, we want to make sure that you can successfully log
- [00:15:15.529]into your Merit account and make sure that you've set up that Duo
- [00:15:19.612]2 step verification process so that it comes to the phone of
- [00:15:23.385]the student so that we don't have any issues getting you
- [00:15:26.911]registered for your class.
