- [00:00:06.440]Welcome to the University Honors Program at the University of
- [00:00:09.248]Nebraska and Lincoln.
- [00:00:10.720]I'm Doctor Tammy Burnett, Director of Operations for
- [00:00:13.688]Honors.
- [00:00:14.840]If you've already applied and been admitted to the program,
- [00:00:18.061]congratulations.
- [00:00:19.320]We're excited to welcome you to campus this fall and to our
- [00:00:22.389]Nebraska Honors community.
- [00:00:24.280]However, if you're interested in joining the Honors Program but
- [00:00:27.636]did not previously apply, there are still opportunities in the
- [00:00:30.939]future to join the Honors community.
- [00:00:33.360]We encourage you to apply after your first semester of college
- [00:00:37.187]during our December on campus application.
- [00:00:40.680]The Honors Program is first and foremost a community of scholars
- [00:00:44.645]who share a common commitment to academic excellence,
- [00:00:47.940]intellectual curiosity, and exploring a wide range of
- [00:00:51.234]interdisciplinary topics.
- [00:00:53.280]We have approximately 2000 students across our four
- [00:00:56.302]cohorts, and Honors students represent every undergraduate
- [00:00:59.731]college at the University of Nebraska, as well as more than
- [00:01:03.219]100 different majors.
- [00:01:04.920]Importantly, the Honors program is also an academic program with
- [00:01:08.658]a set of curricular requirements flexible enough to work with any
- [00:01:12.454]major.
- [00:01:13.400]If you complete this curriculum, you will earn special
- [00:01:16.277]recognition and an academic credential on your diploma upon
- [00:01:19.417]graduating from the University of Nebraska.
- [00:01:23.600]Today I'm going to be sharing a little bit about our first year
- [00:01:27.123]requirements for Honors students To help you prepare to enroll in
- [00:01:30.757]honors classes for your fall semester, each student in the
- [00:01:34.005]Honors program will take a 189 H seminar during their first fall
- [00:01:37.584]semester.
- [00:01:38.600]These seminars are three credit hour classes that can fulfill
- [00:01:42.640]ACE general education requirements and cover a wide
- [00:01:46.028]range of unique topics from the neuroscience of zombies to 21st
- [00:01:50.198]century sports ethics to how to listen to pop music, and so much
- [00:01:54.434]more.
- [00:01:55.360]Each of these seminars is designed to be an engaging,
- [00:01:58.128]discussion based introduction to the Honors program in a small
- [00:02:01.357]classroom setting.
- [00:02:02.880]During the enrollment process, your advisor will help you
- [00:02:05.561]identify the seminar that's the right fit for you.
- [00:02:08.320]Based on your major requirements, the existing ACE
- [00:02:11.312]credits you may have already earned, your scheduling needs,
- [00:02:14.834]and your unique interests.
- [00:02:16.920]The Honors program will allocate seats in each of the seminars
- [00:02:20.168]throughout the summer to ensure that regardless of when you
- [00:02:23.262]enroll, you'll have the opportunity to enroll in a
- [00:02:25.892]seminar that fits your unique needs.
- [00:02:28.360]Keep in mind that your top choice may not be the seminar
- [00:02:31.100]that is the best fit for you, so we recommend you pick out
- [00:02:33.937]several that interest you before you meet with your advisor this
- [00:02:37.063]summer.
- [00:02:39.360]The other Honors course that you should plan for this fall
- [00:02:42.695]semester is U on One O 1 H Honors Community.
- [00:02:45.720]This one credit hour course is tied to our peer mentoring
- [00:02:48.761]program and is required for all first year students during the
- [00:02:52.065]fall semester.
- [00:02:53.080]Unless you have a conflicting seminar for a scholarship based
- [00:02:56.465]program, your advisor will know if this is the case.
- [00:03:00.080]If it is, you are still more than welcome to enroll in the
- [00:03:02.951]101 H course and take advantage of all that it has to offer.
- [00:03:06.480]Historically, we found that most students in this situation
- [00:03:09.633]choose to take the course.
- [00:03:11.960]One of the unique things about this course is that it's
- [00:03:14.643]designed and facilitated by upper class Honor students who
- [00:03:17.471]have given special thought to what would be the most helpful
- [00:03:20.395]things for first year students to learn.
- [00:03:23.040]During the one O 1 H, you will be placed in a small group of
- [00:03:26.316]other first year students and your group will be paired with
- [00:03:29.593]an upper class Honor student leader who will serve as a
- [00:03:32.601]mentor throughout the semester to help you get plugged into the
- [00:03:36.039]Honors Community, to help connect you to resources on
- [00:03:38.940]campus, and to help you learn about the Honors Program
- [00:03:41.894]requirements and opportunities.
- [00:03:44.480]Most importantly, these mentors will help you find your place
- [00:03:47.580]and purpose in the University of Nebraska Honors Program.
- [00:03:52.680]While registering for classes, there are some other things to
- [00:03:55.788]keep in mind.
- [00:03:56.920]Some departments offer additional honors courses that
- [00:03:59.912]frequently will fulfill first and second year requirements,
- [00:04:03.238]such as Honors English or Honors Math.
- [00:04:05.920]You can talk with your advisor about whether enrolling in one
- [00:04:08.828]of these departmental honors courses is the right fit for
- [00:04:11.548]your fall schedule.
- [00:04:13.280]If you have questions about enrollment after it takes place,
- [00:04:16.848]or if you need to make changes to your previously scheduled
- [00:04:20.359]honors courses for the fall semester, contact our Honors
- [00:04:23.693]Advisors by emailinghonors@unl.edu.
- [00:04:26.400]The Honors program uses a shared advising system.
- [00:04:29.520]Once on campus, you can meet with any advisor you'd like for
- [00:04:32.688]additional support integrating Honors into your academic plan.
- [00:04:37.720]As we look ahead to the fall semester, I'd also like to share
- [00:04:40.700]with you an important opportunity to get connected.
- [00:04:43.480]Prior to the start of the academic year, the Honors
- [00:04:46.406]program will once again be hosting our annual Link Up to
- [00:04:49.613]Lincoln program, which aims to provide students in Honors an
- [00:04:53.046]introduction to the City of Lincoln prior to the start of
- [00:04:56.309]classes.
- [00:04:57.440]Link Up allows you to explore the community and culture of our
- [00:05:01.060]city through a series of curated activities on or near campus.
- [00:05:05.320]This is a great way to meet other first year honors students
- [00:05:08.341]and move in early to start discovering all that Lincoln has
- [00:05:11.314]to offer.
- [00:05:12.320]Space is limited though, so visit the link on screen to
- [00:05:15.269]learn more and reserve your spot in this exciting honors event.
- [00:05:20.880]Finally, mark your calendar to join us for root beer floats on
- [00:05:24.452]August 23rd, the Friday before classes start, and for Honors
- [00:05:27.912]Week, which takes place from Thursday, September 4th to
- [00:05:31.088]Thursday, September 12th this Fall semester.
- [00:05:34.160]During this week, our honor student organizations will host
- [00:05:37.603]a variety of activities from a game night to a S'mores cookout,
- [00:05:41.275]to a pancake feed and more, all aimed at connecting our Honors
- [00:05:44.890]community and providing a fun start to your year.
- [00:05:48.280]We will e-mail you more about these events towards the end of
- [00:05:50.929]the summer.
- [00:05:53.240]The Honors Program faculty and staff look forward to welcoming
- [00:05:56.542]you to campus this fall.
- [00:05:58.320]We can't wait to see how you will make your mark and take
- [00:06:01.401]advantage of the opportunities the University Honors Program
- [00:06:04.641]provides.
- [00:06:05.880]Perhaps you'll design and host an after school club in one of
- [00:06:08.680]our Lincoln Elementary schools.
- [00:06:10.720]Maybe you'll intern with a local nonprofit through the Honors
- [00:06:13.958]Intern Foundry Program.
- [00:06:16.040]You might study abroad through one of our Honors specific
- [00:06:19.406]education abroad experiences, such as our Pre Health program
- [00:06:22.947]to Costa Rica.
- [00:06:24.520]Or maybe you'll get involved in one of our four student
- [00:06:27.180]organizations and take on a leadership role within the
- [00:06:29.792]Honors community.
- [00:06:32.160]However you choose to engage with the Honors program, we're
- [00:06:35.276]glad to have you.
- [00:06:36.760]Please reach out to our office throughout the summer with any
- [00:06:39.535]questions or concerns.
