- [00:00:00.520]Hi, my name is Lori Romano and I'm the Director of the Center
- [00:00:04.290]for Academic Success in Transition or cast Office here
- [00:00:07.634]at UNLA, First Generation Student is a student whose
- [00:00:10.857]parents or guardians do not have a four year degree.
- [00:00:14.600]If your parents or guardians started college and stopped your
- [00:00:18.124]first Gen., If your parents and guardians earned a certificate
- [00:00:21.706]or an associate's degree from a two year school, you're still
- [00:00:25.231]first Gen.
- [00:00:26.320]If your parents and guardians never went to college, you're
- [00:00:29.440]first Gen.
- [00:00:30.480]If you have a sibling or a cousin or an aunt and uncle who
- [00:00:33.762]are currently attending college, you're first Gen.
- [00:00:37.160]And if your parents went to college or attended a university
- [00:00:40.830]outside of the United States, you're still first Gen.
- [00:00:45.640]Being first generation means you might be the first in your
- [00:00:49.161]family to earn a college degree.
- [00:00:51.840]Being first Gen.
- [00:00:52.600]is exciting, but it can be overwhelming too.
- [00:00:55.320]It can sometimes feel like other students have some secret
- [00:00:58.561]playbook that explains how everything works, where all the
- [00:01:01.803]resources are, and what all of the confusing acronyms stand
- [00:01:05.100]for.
- [00:01:06.400]So being first generation often means trying to navigate your
- [00:01:10.521]way through the college experience without having that
- [00:01:14.178]really helpful guidebook.
- [00:01:16.200]There's no simple definition when it comes to being a first
- [00:01:19.575]Gen.
- [00:01:19.800]student.
- [00:01:21.080]1st generation students come to college with different levels of
- [00:01:24.737]comfort and knowledge about what the college experience might
- [00:01:28.225]look like for students.
- [00:01:29.520]You're the 1st in your family to do this college thing instead of
- [00:01:33.515]following a very clear and defined path that has been paved
- [00:01:37.148]and walked before you.
- [00:01:38.960]Like many other students, you will be the first one building
- [00:01:43.267]this brand new road.
- [00:01:45.240]It's exciting, but it's also a little bit scary and
- [00:01:48.616]overwhelming too.
- [00:01:50.440]You're going to be learning a lot.
- [00:01:52.120]One of the things that you're going to learn is that college
- [00:01:54.587]is nothing like high school.
- [00:01:56.120]You're going to have a brand new schedule.
- [00:01:58.600]You're going to be living, perhaps on campus or away from
- [00:02:02.023]home for the first time.
- [00:02:03.440]You're going to need to develop new study habits and skills and
- [00:02:06.680]be in charge of your own life.
- [00:02:08.600]This is what adulthood looks like.
- [00:02:10.960]You're going to be making decisions, maybe suffering some
- [00:02:13.983]consequences because of those decisions.
- [00:02:16.600]And you're going to be setting your own goals and building a
- [00:02:20.271]really strong support network for yourself.
- [00:02:23.200]And that's part of what we want to help you do here at Nebraska.
- [00:02:27.560]So for families, what does this mean for you?
- [00:02:30.880]This means that you're sending your student and your child off
- [00:02:33.924]to do something that you may never have done before yourself.
- [00:02:37.440]And that's really scary.
- [00:02:39.240]When your student hits a roadblock or they call home and
- [00:02:42.695]they have questions or issues that they can't figure out, you
- [00:02:46.453]might not have all the info to help them.
- [00:02:49.560]It's natural to say, just come home.
- [00:02:52.240]We'll figure it out.
- [00:02:53.200]Just come home.
- [00:02:54.640]But we don't want you to do that.
- [00:02:56.080]We want you to help your student get connected with the resources
- [00:02:59.796]on campus.
- [00:03:00.360]That could be the cast office.
- [00:03:02.240]That might be the Office of Academic Success and
- [00:03:05.482]Intercultural Services or Oasis.
- [00:03:07.880]It might mean connecting with their advisors or their resident
- [00:03:11.250]assistants, the folks who are living and working in their
- [00:03:14.353]dorms and in their residence halls.
- [00:03:17.360]Just know that it's exciting and it's scary for you too.
- [00:03:21.480]As the family members, you're trusting the people in the
- [00:03:24.724]universities to step in and be the support system while your
- [00:03:28.195]child tries to figure this out.
- [00:03:30.400]There are so many resources on campus and that can be a little
- [00:03:34.600]bit overwhelming too.
- [00:03:36.320]Just know there's always someone who can help and the Cast office
- [00:03:40.461]might be a really great first step and 1st referral that you
- [00:03:44.288]can make to your students.
- [00:03:46.160]Ask them, Hey, have you visited the cast office?
- [00:03:49.200]Have you spoken to one of the academic success coaches or an
- [00:03:52.559]advisor?
- [00:03:53.320]Have you talked to anyone on campus to try and solve your
- [00:03:56.990]problem and families?
- [00:03:58.600]We just want you to know that you're learning too, and the
- [00:04:02.011]resources here on campus are here for you as well.
- [00:04:05.440]Don't hesitate to reach out and ask questions, but also
- [00:04:08.881]understand that you're going to be helping your student learn
- [00:04:12.691]this adulting thing.
- [00:04:14.120]They're going to be learning how to take responsibility for their
- [00:04:17.605]own actions and their own education.
- [00:04:19.800]And so that might mean, instead of swooping in and trying to
- [00:04:23.197]help them figure it out, that you continue to refer them and
- [00:04:26.594]ask your student Have you connected with someone on
- [00:04:29.490]campus?
- [00:04:29.880]Have you been asking questions?
- [00:04:31.480]Have you gone into the cast office to meet with one of the
- [00:04:34.693]success coaches are here to help both you and your student get
- [00:04:38.125]really comfortable.
- [00:04:40.960]First Gen.
- [00:04:41.520]Nebraska is a huge network of first Gen.
- [00:04:44.840]faculty, staff and students.
- [00:04:46.560]Here at Nebraska, almost 1/4 of the people on this campus are
- [00:04:51.080]first generation.
- [00:04:52.800]So if you see the logo on AT shirt on a pin or a button or
- [00:04:56.813]even hanging on a sign on the on an office door, it might mean
- [00:05:01.099]that person is First generation 2.
- [00:05:03.920]These are your people, so look for them around campus and at
- [00:05:07.405]different events like the first Gen.
- [00:05:09.520]share a meal events which are really great way for students,
- [00:05:12.742]faculty and staff to get a free meal together in one of the
- [00:05:15.913]dining halls.
- [00:05:17.160]We also like to celebrate the National First Gen.
- [00:05:20.960]Recognition Day, which we turn into a week of celebration every
- [00:05:24.992]November.
- [00:05:26.080]There's also a first Gen.
- [00:05:28.160]recognized student organization or RSO, which is just a fancy
- [00:05:32.033]name of saying a first Gen.
- [00:05:33.720]club.
- [00:05:34.880]The first Gen.
- [00:05:36.000]RSO like to do fun things like going to see a women's
- [00:05:39.663]basketball games together, doing arts and crafts, or even
- [00:05:43.598]visiting the lead Center for a Broadway show.
- [00:05:47.880]The first Husker program in the Center for Academic Success and
- [00:05:52.375]Transition is a first year program designed for first Gen.
- [00:05:56.520]students.
- [00:05:57.480]First Huskers get a chance to move to campus early and 1st
- [00:06:01.163]Huskers participate in a four day program where they get to
- [00:06:04.908]meet new friends, connect with cast, coaches and peer mentors,
- [00:06:08.841]and even transition into a once a week one hour seminar through
- [00:06:12.836]the fall semester.
- [00:06:14.680]No matter what your first Gen.
- [00:06:16.400]story is, you can succeed here at Nebraska and there are a
- [00:06:20.195]whole lot of people who can help you.
- [00:06:23.400]If you would like more information, feel free to reach
