- [00:00:01.480]Hi there.
- [00:00:02.360]My name is Lori Romano, and I'm really excited because if you're
- [00:00:05.583]here with us today, it means that you're being invited to
- [00:00:08.459]participate in what we call our power programs.
- [00:00:11.640]And we have a couple really exciting options for students
- [00:00:15.015]who want to get engaged on campus, really get to know the
- [00:00:18.391]campus community well and be able to connect really early to
- [00:00:21.941]some awesome resources.
- [00:00:23.680]So I'm going to chat with you a little bit today about what
- [00:00:27.020]these power programs are and how you can get engaged and see if
- [00:00:30.584]this is something you might want to participate in.
- [00:00:34.160]So what we have is a couple of different options.
- [00:00:38.760]So it's kind of like a Choose Your Own adventure.
- [00:00:41.320]A power program is really a program that is designed to help
- [00:00:44.274]students get connected and engaged on campus and just
- [00:00:46.889]really start building a support network that you're going to
- [00:00:49.843]need to get through college.
- [00:00:51.480]All of the most successful college students are the ones
- [00:00:54.273]that build a really strong network around themselves.
- [00:00:57.240]And since you're a student who is not participating in any
- [00:01:00.794]other, what we call retention program on campus, which means a
- [00:01:04.589]program that has like a first semester seminar, we wanted to
- [00:01:08.264]offer this opportunity to you because it's a great way to get
- [00:01:11.999]involved with the Center for Academic Success or the Cast
- [00:01:15.493]office on campus or another office called Oasis or the
- [00:01:18.806]Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services.
- [00:01:22.560]So one of our options is called the seminar only option.
- [00:01:26.560]This means that the ways that you're going to get connected is
- [00:01:30.145]mainly through a 12 week seminar.
- [00:01:32.440]The class meets once a week for about 50 minutes, so not even an
- [00:01:36.117]hour.
- [00:01:36.400]So it's really not going to be a lot of extra time on your
- [00:01:38.690]schedule.
- [00:01:39.360]It's totally free.
- [00:01:41.480]It is taught by either staff members in the cast office or
- [00:01:45.020]the Oasis office.
- [00:01:46.400]It has a full team of peer mentors that are available in
- [00:01:49.553]every single class for the students.
- [00:01:52.000]We plan a lot of fun events throughout the semester, like
- [00:01:55.244]activities and things like that that are outside of class that
- [00:01:58.768]are fun and free.
- [00:02:00.120]But then the class itself is really designed to help students
- [00:02:03.462]like ask themselves why are they pursuing a college degree in the
- [00:02:07.020]1st place?
- [00:02:07.560]Like, what's the purpose for all of this?
- [00:02:09.600]We want to know what their goals are so we can help kind of get
- [00:02:12.739]them connected with some of the different resources and things
- [00:02:15.829]on campus.
- [00:02:16.880]The other really great thing about participating in a power
- [00:02:20.370]program is there is one education abroad trip that is
- [00:02:23.512]only open to students that have participated in one of these
- [00:02:27.061]power programs with the Castor Oasis office and it's called
- [00:02:30.552]CAST in Singapore.
- [00:02:32.000]So it's really for students who want to spend about two weeks
- [00:02:35.531]exploring a brand new country but do it with some folks that
- [00:02:39.006]they're already familiar with, which is why it's only open for
- [00:02:42.594]students who have participated in some of these power programs.
- [00:02:46.520]And it's a couple of members of the CAST team, the CAST staff
- [00:02:50.984]that actually lead this program each year.
- [00:02:54.480]So again if you participate in one of these power programs, you
- [00:02:58.816]get a couple of like I guess VIP experiences are kind of perks
- [00:03:03.085]that you get just for being a student who participates.
- [00:03:08.000]So another really great option if you want to do a little bit
- [00:03:11.265]more they what we have is something called the four day
- [00:03:14.215]plus seminar experience.
- [00:03:15.800]So what this is in addition to the seminar that meets once a
- [00:03:19.400]week for 12 weeks throughout the semester, you're going to get
- [00:03:23.118]that, but you also get a chance to move in early if you're not
- [00:03:26.836]living on campus.
- [00:03:27.840]If you're a commuter student, that's not a big deal.
- [00:03:29.840]You can still participate in this early four day program.
- [00:03:33.000]It's the only difference is you go home at the end of the night
- [00:03:35.844]and sleep at home and then you come back the next day for all
- [00:03:38.600]of the activities.
- [00:03:40.000]So really what this is, it starts August 18th with that
- [00:03:43.370]early move in and then students spends like 4 full days being on
- [00:03:47.282]campus, getting behind the scenes tours, VIP access to some
- [00:03:50.893]of the resources in the offices and spaces on campus that aren't
- [00:03:54.805]really open to everybody yet because the rest of the students
- [00:03:58.536]haven't moved in.
- [00:04:00.200]So it's a chance to get really, really comfortable.
- [00:04:02.680]You start making new friends before other students have even
- [00:04:06.074]arrived.
- [00:04:06.840]And it's a way to just make sure that you're kind of comfortable
- [00:04:10.469]and connected with some people, that you can ask questions way
- [00:04:13.988]before classes even start.
- [00:04:16.400]This is also an opportunity to connect really closely with the
- [00:04:19.886]cast team.
- [00:04:20.440]You get an academic success coach assigned to you.
- [00:04:22.920]That is the person who is going to be teaching your class.
- [00:04:25.720]You're going to have two peer mentors in your class with you,
- [00:04:28.855]and these are students who have been through this program.
- [00:04:31.840]They're a year ahead of you or two years ahead of you, you
- [00:04:35.346]know, just a little bit closer to graduation.
- [00:04:38.400]And they've been there, done that, and they want to share all
- [00:04:41.024]of the information that they've learned.
- [00:04:43.360]So again, a lot of different fun events and activities that
- [00:04:46.560]happen outside of class that you'll be invited to.
- [00:04:49.280]It's all free and it's another opportunity to participate in
- [00:04:52.642]the cast in Singapore at a broad experience if you're interested.
- [00:04:57.640]So I want to highlight one more specific program.
- [00:05:00.720]First Husker is an opportunity for first generation students to
- [00:05:04.377]kind of get together and form community.
- [00:05:07.040]And a first generation student is a student whose parents or
- [00:05:10.223]guardians don't have a four year college degree or they don't
- [00:05:13.459]have a four year college degree from here in the United States.
- [00:05:17.360]So first generation students often just have more questions
- [00:05:20.600]than other students.
- [00:05:22.000]The way that I always explain it, because I was a first Gen.
- [00:05:24.320]student too, it's like we don't have the secret college
- [00:05:26.939]playbook.
- [00:05:27.560]We don't know all of the lingo.
- [00:05:29.800]We kind of don't speak some of the language of college or maybe
- [00:05:33.009]know what to expect simply because our parents or
- [00:05:35.516]grandparents didn't go to college before us, so they can't
- [00:05:38.474]give us some of the inside information.
- [00:05:41.160]So what first Husker is, it's that four day plus seminar
- [00:05:45.250]experience.
- [00:05:46.320]But you're gonna be in classes with other first Gen.
- [00:05:49.680]students and we try to pair first Gen.
- [00:05:52.640]peer mentors into these classes.
- [00:05:54.920]So you've got other students who are really new to this college
- [00:05:58.028]thing.
- [00:05:58.520]Sometimes, you know, parents and families don't really understand
- [00:06:01.062]quite what we're going through 'cause they haven't done it
- [00:06:03.336]themselves.
- [00:06:04.040]So it's a really nice way to surround yourself with some
- [00:06:06.558]peers who understand what you're going through.
- [00:06:09.240]So if you happen to be first generation, the only thing to
- [00:06:12.296]pay attention to on the registration form is just make
- [00:06:15.146]sure that you mark your first Gen.
- [00:06:17.200]And what we'll try to do is we'll try to put you in one of
- [00:06:19.460]the classes.
- [00:06:20.160]That is a lot of the first Gen.
- [00:06:22.120]community.
- [00:06:23.200]So just make sure again on the application that you mark that.
- [00:06:26.560]So really for next steps, if you're again in, in this
- [00:06:29.633]session, if you were invited to the session, it means that we
- [00:06:33.163]want you to participate in our program.
- [00:06:35.440]You don't have to, but there's a limited amount of seats.
- [00:06:38.920]So if you're first generation and you really want that first
- [00:06:41.932]tester program, there are 200 spots.
- [00:06:43.760]So I would scan that QR code log on today, make sure you submit
- [00:06:47.316]that you want to participate in the four day because first
- [00:06:50.594]tester is specifically that four day plus seminar experience.
- [00:06:54.560]Or if you're a student that you just want to be connected, maybe
- [00:06:57.570]you can't get to campus early, but you want to do that seminar
- [00:07:00.488]only.
- [00:07:00.880]Same thing, everybody is scanning the same QR code.
- [00:07:04.280]You fill out that registration no matter how you want to
- [00:07:07.194]participate with us after that, really, it's just kind of
- [00:07:10.161]watching your e-mail For more information.
- [00:07:12.680]We're going to be making sure that that seminar class gets
- [00:07:15.442]added to your schedule.
- [00:07:16.520]It won't interfere with any of your other classes, we promise.
- [00:07:19.640]We work really hard on that, and you'll be able to log on and
- [00:07:22.695]check your schedule and see that class added after August 1st.
- [00:07:26.240]Otherwise, throughout the summer, whether you're moving in
- [00:07:29.190]early or you're going to join us, once you know the seminar or
- [00:07:32.340]I'm sorry, the class starts in the fall, we're going to be
- [00:07:35.290]sending you a little bit of information just to get
- [00:07:37.890]acquainted and make sure you know where to go.
- [00:07:40.560]And we'll be seeing you in August.
- [00:07:43.200]So if you have any questions, feel free reach out to the cast
- [00:07:46.362]office.
- [00:07:46.720]We are here all summer long.
- [00:07:49.040]You can, you know, come in Love Library S 110.
- [00:07:52.680]We will be all throughout the orientation days and places
- [00:07:55.232]throughout the summer.
- [00:07:56.960]Otherwise, you can e-mail us at success@unl.edu or call
- [00:08:02.771]402-472-1880.
- [00:08:04.720]We're so excited for you to start school in the fall.
- [00:08:08.080]Have fun.
- [00:08:08.680]Have a really great summer.
- [00:08:09.920]We'll see you in August and go Big Red.
