[00:00:02.160]My name is Lori Romano and I'm with the Center for Academic
[00:00:05.295]Success and Transition, also known as the Cast Office on
[00:00:08.274]campus.
[00:00:08.920]And if you're here today with us for this session, it means
[00:00:12.236]you've earned one of the scholarships, either the
[00:00:15.000]Nebraska Achievement Scholarship or the Emerging Leader
[00:00:18.096]Scholarship.
[00:00:19.040]And that means you're going to be participating in one of our
[00:00:21.348]power programs this fall.
[00:00:22.480]So I'm going to walk you through a couple of next steps, give you
[00:00:26.026]a little bit more information about the program and the
[00:00:29.036]expectations and requirements, and then you'll be able to just
[00:00:32.421]go ahead and fill out the registration form.
[00:00:35.120]And then we'll just be seeing you on campus in August.
[00:00:38.880]So a couple quick things.
[00:00:41.040]First, the Nebraska Achievement Scholarship is a scholarship
[00:00:43.917]that you would have seen in your financial aid package.
[00:00:46.960]This is a $1000 a year renewable scholarship, which means if you
[00:00:51.306]participate in the program this year, fulfill the requirements
[00:00:55.518]and then just make sure that you're maintaining the GPA, you
[00:00:59.597]should be able to renew the scholarship automatically each
[00:01:03.542]year for four years.
[00:01:05.160]So it's a little bit of extra money that gets kind of added to
[00:01:08.772]your financial aid package.
[00:01:10.640]And then really the only required participation is in
[00:01:13.496]this first fall semester and I'll talk about that in just a
[00:01:16.669]second.
[00:01:17.040]But participants and scholarship recipients get a chance to
[00:01:21.840]choose their own adventure.
[00:01:24.240]So there are two options to participate.
[00:01:27.120]One is a four day plus a seminar which will take place in the
[00:01:31.191]fall.
[00:01:31.840]The other is a seminar only option that just has a quick
[00:01:34.541]orientation and I'll walk you through those in just a second.
[00:01:38.600]So the other scholarship very similar is called the Emerging
[00:01:41.672]Leaders scholarship.
[00:01:42.720]Again, you would have seen this on your financial aid package,
[00:01:46.608]you know, same thing, it's a $2000 a year renewable
[00:01:49.817]scholarship and as long as you are participating in the program
[00:01:53.766]this fall, maintain those GPA and full time student status
[00:01:57.408]requirements going forward each semester.
[00:02:00.320]This is a scholarship that should renew automatically for
[00:02:04.018]four years.
[00:02:05.040]So it's again a little bit of extra money that goes into your
[00:02:08.252]financial aid package and as long as we're just making sure
[00:02:11.361]that we maintain the requirements, everything is
[00:02:13.900]good.
[00:02:14.480]Emerging leaders, you also have the option of choosing either
[00:02:17.597]the four day plus seminar or the seminar only.
[00:02:20.280]So we'll go over those details right now.
[00:02:23.400]So the seminar only option is for students who cannot come to
[00:02:26.902]campus early and don't want to participate in the extra program
[00:02:30.517]which is the four day.
[00:02:32.480]So for seminar only students, what is going to happen?
[00:02:35.840]You will fill out the registration form and I'll give
[00:02:38.355]you the QR code for that.
[00:02:39.520]At the end of this video there will be a quick half day
[00:02:42.681]orientation session that will take place the morning of August
[00:02:46.237]26th.
[00:02:46.760]You'll get a little bit more information about that as it
[00:02:49.677]gets closer, but for the seminar only option, it's really just
[00:02:52.847]that half day, really quick introduction.
[00:02:54.960]You'll get to meet the team that you'll be working with in the
[00:02:58.643]fall and then it's a 12 week seminar and the class meets just
[00:03:02.267]one time a week for 50 minutes.
[00:03:04.080]So it doesn't take a lot of time out of your schedule, gives you
[00:03:07.652]a really great connection point on campus with a team of peer
[00:03:11.060]mentors and full time staff.
[00:03:13.000]There are a lot of different fun events that happen throughout
[00:03:15.927]the semester and different activities that are all free for
[00:03:18.715]participants.
[00:03:20.280]The other really great thing about the seminar only option is
[00:03:24.281]there is a cast in Singapore at abroad trip that is new.
[00:03:28.120]We're just in the second year actually this year, but only
[00:03:32.039]students who participate in these power programs are
[00:03:35.559]eligible to even apply for the Singapore experience.
[00:03:39.320]So it's it's a little bit of kind of an exclusive at abroad
[00:03:42.968]trip for the students that participate.
[00:03:45.400]So it's something that you all as scholarship students just get
[00:03:49.076]kind of as a bonus because you'll participate in the
[00:03:52.120]programs anyway.
[00:03:53.960]So the seminar only option again is just that really quick
[00:03:58.413]orientation and then the the class for the four day plus
[00:04:02.716]seminar.
[00:04:03.320]This is a chance for you to basically get AVIP and early
[00:04:07.919]move in experience at no cost, everything is totally free.
[00:04:13.040]So what happens in the four day plus seminar is you actually get
[00:04:16.641]to move into campus on Sunday, August 18th.
[00:04:19.320]This is before most of the rest of students are arriving on
[00:04:22.428]campus unless they're participating in marching band
[00:04:25.174]or sometimes the athletic programs.
[00:04:28.280]So our students get to move in early.
[00:04:30.280]We do a lot of like behind the scenes VIP access to different
[00:04:33.897]resources on campus because again, other students haven't
[00:04:37.281]even arrived.
[00:04:38.440]Or we get a chance to really kind of get comfortable in the
[00:04:42.319]spaces, meet a lot of people and just again get really bonded and
[00:04:46.586]start to make friends with this whole new group before other
[00:04:50.529]students start to arrive and things get really, really busy
[00:04:54.408]and hectic.
[00:04:56.640]It is a free early movement for those living on campus, but you
[00:04:59.802]don't have to be a resident student to participate if you're
[00:05:02.816]a commuter.
[00:05:03.640]Really what happens at the end of these, you know, four days of
[00:05:06.638]activities is you just go home at night instead of back to the
[00:05:09.589]dorms to sleep and then you join us again the next morning.
[00:05:13.600]This gives you a really direct connection to the cast office,
[00:05:16.498]which is great.
[00:05:17.440]You get academic success coaching with our full time
[00:05:20.170]staff.
[00:05:20.760]There's a team of peer mentors, so there's kind of a whole group
[00:05:24.084]of other students who have like been there, done that and they
[00:05:27.307]can give really, really good advice.
[00:05:30.200]And we also plan a lot of fun events and things throughout the
[00:05:33.241]throughout the semester.
[00:05:34.600]And again, it's all free and just like the seminar only
[00:05:38.253]students, if you're participating in one of these
[00:05:41.515]power programs, you qualify to be able to apply later on if you
[00:05:45.691]want to do the cast in Singapore at abroad experience.
[00:05:49.680]So sometimes for students, if they've never traveled abroad
[00:05:53.132]and they don't necessarily want to sign up for a trip to go
[00:05:56.584]along with a bunch of strangers, the cool thing about the cast in
[00:06:00.382]Singapore at abroad experience is it's like all students who
[00:06:03.892]have participated in our program and it's academic success
[00:06:07.287]coaches from the cast office that actually lead the tour
[00:06:10.567]experience.
[00:06:11.400]So you even know the people that you're travelling with, which is
[00:06:13.806]kind of cool.
[00:06:15.480]So next steps for our scholarship students is really
[00:06:18.377]just scan the QR code on the screen.
[00:06:21.400]The registration form that you're filling out is going to
[00:06:24.130]give us a little bit of like contact information for over the
[00:06:27.049]summer T-shirt size because everybody gets like a free
[00:06:29.638]T-shirt and some swag when they're in the program.
[00:06:32.440]And then it is just a way for us to actually collect whether
[00:06:35.909]you're going to be participating in the four day plus the seminar
[00:06:39.662]or the seminar only.
[00:06:41.080]And what that does for our team is it gives us a chance to
[00:06:43.822]register you in the right section of the class and then
[00:06:46.425]you'll start receiving some information from us throughout
[00:06:49.168]the summer.
[00:06:49.680]If you are moving in early with us, we'll make sure we get you
[00:06:52.515]on the list with housing.
[00:06:53.640]So everything will be cleared and then we pick up the extra
[00:06:57.190]cost for all the move in and the meals that will take place.
[00:07:01.240]So for you students, you just log on, follow that QR code, get
[00:07:05.027]to the website, fill out the registration form, and then let
[00:07:08.695]our team take everything from there.
[00:07:11.280]You'll hear from us later in the summer.
[00:07:13.080]You can check back on your schedule after August 1st and
[00:07:15.727]you'll see the seminar class has been added for you and it's not
[00:07:18.746]going to interfere with any of the rest of your schedule.
