- [00:00:02.560]Hi everyone, my name is Kate Rayom.
- [00:00:04.400]I serve as the Associate Director of Fraternity and
- [00:00:07.247]Sorority Life as well as the Inter Fraternity Council Advisor
- [00:00:10.642]and today we will be talking about living arrangements within
- [00:00:14.037]fraternity chapter facilities.
- [00:00:17.800]So for today's agenda we'll first talk about University
- [00:00:20.619]approved housing, what it is and what the requirements are.
- [00:00:23.880]Also the contract process for University housing and
- [00:00:27.272]University approved housing in these chapter facilities, costs
- [00:00:31.304]and amenities.
- [00:00:32.200]And then also some information about how to reach out if you
- [00:00:34.993]have questions.
- [00:00:36.840]So University approved housing or UAH for short.
- [00:00:41.320]UNL has an on campus residency policy that requires our first
- [00:00:45.288]year students to reside in a university owned residence hall
- [00:00:49.192]or other university approved living units such as fraternity
- [00:00:53.096]chapter facilities and so not all IFC chapters operate a
- [00:00:56.744]facility.
- [00:00:57.320]17 out of the 26 IFC chapters we have here on campus do have
- [00:01:01.036]chapter facilities that are available for their members to
- [00:01:04.630]live in, but not all IFC chapters operate a facility.
- [00:01:07.920]So important to note there too IFC chapters who are wanting
- [00:01:11.262]their first year freshman students to live in their
- [00:01:14.160]facility must be university approved housing compliant.
- [00:01:17.560]So if they are a first year student or freshman class
- [00:01:20.570]student living on campus for their first year of undergrad,
- [00:01:23.915]their chapter facility needs to have their university approved
- [00:01:27.428]housing documents and contracts signed etcetera.
- [00:01:30.480]I will say all 17 of IFC chapters that have facilities
- [00:01:33.944]are university approved housing.
- [00:01:36.680]So there's not really any guessing of who doesn't and
- [00:01:39.146]doesn't have the housing, but they do all need to be compliant
- [00:01:42.024]in order to house those first year students.
- [00:01:44.080]So the requirements that they need to be compliant with in
- [00:01:47.702]order to have those first year students living in for residency
- [00:01:51.631]is employ a living advisor or house director, maintaining
- [00:01:55.192]appropriate property and liability insurance, passing
- [00:01:58.507]health, safety and fire inspections for the facility
- [00:02:01.761]following university alcohol, drug and weapon policies.
- [00:02:05.880]Also all 11 members must participate in SARV, which is
- [00:02:08.800]our sexual assault and relationship violence training.
- [00:02:12.120]All first year students living either in university owned
- [00:02:15.296]residence halls or university approved housing living units
- [00:02:18.583]such as fraternity chapters go through our SARV training.
- [00:02:22.400]In addition to that start training.
- [00:02:23.760]They need to go through alcohol education and easing education
- [00:02:26.963]programs as well, which all of our fraternity organizations
- [00:02:30.014]already provide for their members, but it is a stipulation
- [00:02:33.014]for that education to be university approved housing.
- [00:02:36.440]They also need to provide contact information for the
- [00:02:38.888]student leaders and the alumni who are responsible for the
- [00:02:41.564]maintenance and management of the facility.
- [00:02:43.800]This is so that the Office of Fraternity and Sporty Life and
- [00:02:47.168]any other university administration or officials can
- [00:02:50.096]contact them if needed for issues, inquiries, questions
- [00:02:53.188]about the facility as well.
- [00:02:55.400]And then of course, submission of all of these appropriate UAH
- [00:02:58.570]documents and contracts in order to be officially listed within
- [00:03:01.790]the STAR as Housing portal as University Approved Housing.
- [00:03:06.680]A little bit more about the contract process.
- [00:03:09.120]So fraternity housing contracts are between the student and
- [00:03:12.273]family and the fraternity.
- [00:03:13.640]So university housing is not a part of the contract process.
- [00:03:17.720]It's a direct contract between the student and the fraternal
- [00:03:20.819]organization.
- [00:03:22.080]These contracts are to be signed before the student has moved
- [00:03:25.095]into the chapter facility.
- [00:03:26.400]Really similar to an apartment or a house lease where you want
- [00:03:29.467]to make sure you have that lease or that contract signed before
- [00:03:32.583]you're actually able to move into the facility.
- [00:03:34.920]So you want to make sure you have your ducks in a row before
- [00:03:37.179]you're actually moving into the chapter house.
- [00:03:40.040]A little bit more about the University Housing cancellation
- [00:03:42.757]process.
- [00:03:43.120]So if you are a first year incoming student, you have
- [00:03:46.117]likely already completed your University Housing contract
- [00:03:49.337]through your Myred student portal.
- [00:03:51.640]In order to let University Housing know that you will no
- [00:03:54.601]longer be living planning to live in a residence hall and
- [00:03:57.615]instead planning to live in a fraternity residence, you'll
- [00:04:00.681]just need to log into your Myred student account.
- [00:04:03.640]You'll select that red housing button on the right side of the
- [00:04:06.777]homepage to enter your housing portal.
- [00:04:09.360]From there, on the top row of tabs, you'll select the 2425 New
- [00:04:13.762]Student Application.
- [00:04:15.720]There will then be a button that says Confirm your fraternity
- [00:04:18.763]residence and then you will complete this form.
- [00:04:22.040]This is within the 2425 residency exemption application.
- [00:04:26.600]You will not only let us know that you would like to be exempt
- [00:04:29.535]from first year residency requirement in the University
- [00:04:32.144]residence halls because you're wanting to live in a Greek
- [00:04:34.847]residence, and we'll also know, you'll also let us know which
- [00:04:37.736]chapter facility you'll be living in as well.
- [00:04:40.160]So again, you'll check.
- [00:04:41.000]Select the chapter facility you plan to reside in.
- [00:04:44.000]Once you have completed and submitted this form, the Office
- [00:04:47.222]of Fraternity and Sorority Life Staff will verify your
- [00:04:50.176]fraternity membership and either approve or deny your request.
- [00:04:53.880]You should assume that your request has not been processed
- [00:04:57.331]or approved until you get notification that your request
- [00:05:00.666]has been approved.
- [00:05:01.720]So you are still, you know, attached to your university
- [00:05:05.063]housing contract until you get notification that our office has
- [00:05:08.884]approved your fraternity membership and your request to
- [00:05:12.227]live into their facility.
- [00:05:14.480]There can be a cancellation fee after the July 15th deadline.
- [00:05:18.360]So I've included the web link there where it talks a little
- [00:05:21.595]bit more about contract cancellation and the timelines
- [00:05:24.561]and fees associated.
- [00:05:26.120]But the main deadline for you to know whether you'd like to be
- [00:05:29.655]moving into a fraternity facility or not is going to be
- [00:05:32.798]July 15th.
- [00:05:33.920]There are still opportunities for you to move into a facility
- [00:05:37.425]and switch your contract over after that date, but housing
- [00:05:40.761]fees do accrue after the July 15th date.
- [00:05:43.440]This is also a great question for you to be asking during the
- [00:05:46.665]recruitment process for chapters as well, asking them if they
- [00:05:49.890]will help pay for the cancellation fee after that,
- [00:05:52.543]especially after that July 15th date.
- [00:05:54.760]Many of our chapters do so that they can get their new members
- [00:05:57.921]to move into their chapter house, but it's a great question
- [00:06:00.933]to ask and just verify before officially accepting a bid or
- [00:06:03.944]that extension of membership.
- [00:06:07.840]A little bit more information about the cost, but also some of
- [00:06:10.589]the amenities that come from the cost as well.
- [00:06:12.640]So the average live in membership range is anywhere
- [00:06:17.283]from $8220 to 13,000 and $600.00.
- [00:06:20.320]It really depends and varies on the chapter facility.
- [00:06:23.160]Not all facilities are the same.
- [00:06:25.240]I wouldn't even say not two chapter facilities are the same.
- [00:06:28.160]They all have some common amenities that I'll go over, but
- [00:06:31.184]they also have a lot of different amenities that make
- [00:06:33.952]them distinct but also influence their price ranges as well.
- [00:06:37.840]The common amenities for our chapter facilities are weekday
- [00:06:41.097]meal plan.
- [00:06:41.960]This would be a Monday through Friday meal plan.
- [00:06:44.600]It depends again on the chapter if they include hot breakfast or
- [00:06:48.258]a cereal bar instead.
- [00:06:50.040]Some chapter meal plans do not include breakfast at all, but
- [00:06:52.933]include lunch and dinner.
- [00:06:54.320]So it really again is a great question for you to be asking
- [00:06:56.930]during the recruitment process.
- [00:06:58.280]If you're interested in a fraternity with a facility to
- [00:07:01.441]ask more about the details of their weekly weekday meal plan,
- [00:07:04.940]there are options within University Dining that are
- [00:07:07.875]available on their website.
- [00:07:09.400]If you are looking for maybe a weekend only meal plan or a
- [00:07:12.822]limited number of meal swipes per week to supplement some of
- [00:07:16.360]those weekend meals.
- [00:07:17.880]But also often times the the companies are the chefs that
- [00:07:20.800]these chapter facilities employ will make late plate first, late
- [00:07:24.073]plates for students.
- [00:07:25.200]If they have class during a meal time period, they'll make you a
- [00:07:28.335]leftovers box to keep in the fridge.
- [00:07:30.600]Sometimes they'll also keep additional food and snacks and
- [00:07:33.495]again, things on a cereal bar for over the weekend as well.
- [00:07:36.480]So again it all just varies depending on the chapter.
- [00:07:39.840]So great questions to ask during recruitment, but also just know
- [00:07:42.811]there are plenty of options to help supplement meal plans if
- [00:07:45.600]needed through university dining as well.
- [00:07:48.240]Obviously another amenity is going to be your actual bedroom
- [00:07:51.593]and living space, but some other common amenities include laundry
- [00:07:55.222]rooms, some chapter facilities include parking as well,
- [00:07:58.300]cleaning materials and or services.
- [00:08:00.280]This is not necessarily for the students individual rooms, but
- [00:08:04.468]more so for common spaces like bathrooms, hallways, living
- [00:08:08.390]spaces etcetera, Wi-Fi.
- [00:08:09.920]Most of our chapter facilities if have at least one if not
- [00:08:13.453]multiple study spaces or lounge spaces for students to
- [00:08:16.746]socialize, work on homework, study for exams etcetera.
- [00:08:20.040]And then also a lot of times our, our membership also
- [00:08:23.045]includes things like apparel for philanthropy, events, membership
- [00:08:26.718]retreats etcetera.
- [00:08:28.840]Our out of house membership ranges anywhere from 2500 to
- [00:08:32.404]4500 per year.
- [00:08:33.280]So if you're a student who is maybe joining a fraternity
- [00:08:36.308]chapter that does not have a facility or you're opting to not
- [00:08:39.602]live in the chapter facility, that's what you can expect for
- [00:08:42.843]cost for the year.
- [00:08:44.080]And then again not all of our IFC chapters have facilities to
- [00:08:47.445]operate.
- [00:08:47.880]So our non house chapter dues typically range from $900 to
- [00:08:51.662]$2000 for the year.
- [00:08:53.320]To go towards your cost of membership, again make sure that
- [00:08:56.597]you're asking about living accommodations during the
- [00:08:59.493]recruitment process, no to fraternity facilities are the
- [00:09:02.606]same.
- [00:09:02.880]So it's a really great opportunity for you to ask more
- [00:09:05.532]about what common amenities they have, but also maybe some unique
- [00:09:08.716]amenities that might be specific to their chapter facility as
- [00:09:11.707]well as well as some of those additional pieces like what is
- [00:09:14.649]your meal plan look like, How is parking available, etcetera.
- [00:09:20.160]If you have any questions about fraternity living, please feel
- [00:09:23.089]free to contact the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
- [00:09:26.160]Our phone number is listed there as well as our web page, but
- [00:09:29.185]again, my name is Kate Raome.
- [00:09:30.600]I serve as the Associate Director and the IFC Fraternity
- [00:09:33.511]advisor.
- [00:09:34.320]So if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to
- [00:09:36.781]our office at any time.
- [00:09:37.680]Any of our staff are more than help, more than happy to help
- [00:09:40.350]answer those.
- [00:09:41.280]Additionally, there's also a resource site where you can find
- [00:09:44.420]additional recordings, some key links, PowerPoint downloads, and
- [00:09:47.712]other orientation sessions.
- [00:09:49.680]You can either scan the QR code on the right or head to
- [00:09:53.684]go.unl.edu/NSCresources.
- [00:09:55.880]Thank you all so much for being here today and go Big Red.
