- [00:00:01.960]Hi, everyone.
- [00:00:02.760]Thank you so much for joining.
- [00:00:04.080]To learn a little bit more about joining a culturally based
- [00:00:07.084]fraternal organization at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
- [00:00:12.200]My name is Lee Tiedemann.
- [00:00:13.320]I serve as the director of Paternity and Sorority Life.
- [00:00:15.760]I use she, her pronouns, and I have been in my role here at UNL
- [00:00:19.064]for almost five years.
- [00:00:20.200]Again, thanks for joining.
- [00:00:21.560]To learn a little bit more, a little bit about our fraternity
- [00:00:25.476]and sorority community, a part of fraternity and sorority life.
- [00:00:29.520]We have been here at the university for almost 150 years
- [00:00:33.012]and so we have been here within the first six years of the
- [00:00:36.628]university being founded.
- [00:00:38.160]So we always say we've been a a part of the fabric of UNL since
- [00:00:41.676]the very beginning.
- [00:00:43.040]We currently have 53 different organizations that are a part of
- [00:00:46.551]our community.
- [00:00:47.320]So that's fraternities and sororities.
- [00:00:49.200]So that's quite a few that people can choose from and which
- [00:00:51.792]to find a home.
- [00:00:53.120]We have almost 4200 students that have found a home within
- [00:00:56.440]our community and that's about one in five students that you
- [00:00:59.873]see walking around campus are a member of a fraternity or
- [00:01:03.138]sorority here at UNL.
- [00:01:05.040]There are four different ways that you can join the fraternity
- [00:01:07.615]and sorority community because we have four different governing
- [00:01:10.232]councils.
- [00:01:10.800]The 1st is our Inter Fraternity Council, the 2nd is our
- [00:01:14.024]Multicultural Greek Council, the third is our National Panellenic
- [00:01:17.823]Council and the 4th is our Panellenic Association.
- [00:01:21.000]And so for the purposes of this presentation, I'm going to be
- [00:01:24.784]talking specifically about the Multicultural Greek Council or
- [00:01:28.569]MGC and the National Panellenic Council or NPHC.
- [00:01:33.360]Before we get into a deep dive of each of the council's, I did
- [00:01:36.203]want to share a little bit about the fraternity and sorority
- [00:01:38.956]values in our community.
- [00:01:40.040]We have got five values that guide our organizations and our
- [00:01:43.495]office as we're working with the community, The 1st is academic
- [00:01:47.120]achievement.
- [00:01:48.080]We always tell members of the community that they are students
- [00:01:51.569]first and academics are huge, a huge priority within the
- [00:01:54.726]community.
- [00:01:55.520]We are really proud that our all Greek GPA sits at a 3.420 that's
- [00:02:00.936]from Fall 2023 and our the all UNLGPA while still good is at a
- [00:02:06.107]3.241.
- [00:02:06.880]So the All Greek GPA is consistently higher than the all
- [00:02:09.893]University GPA and our chapters are really proud of that.
- [00:02:13.520]The second value is leadership development.
- [00:02:15.920]We've got so many ways that you can find the leadership position
- [00:02:18.986]within the community that could be on a chapter, organizational
- [00:02:22.005]leadership that could be serving as a council which are the
- [00:02:24.835]governing groups for each of our our four different councils.
- [00:02:28.040]And then there's so many ways to be involved on campus and
- [00:02:31.101]members of our community can be seen on almost every student
- [00:02:34.267]organization here on campus.
- [00:02:36.480]We also know that civic engagement is a huge part of the
- [00:02:39.375]fraternity and sorority experience whether that's
- [00:02:41.916]through philanthropy or raising money for A cause, community
- [00:02:45.015]service, using your hands to make a difference in the in the
- [00:02:48.114]local community or advocacy which is spreading awareness
- [00:02:51.009]about a particular event.
- [00:02:52.560]Each of our chapters have local and national organizations that
- [00:02:55.746]they support and so that's a huge part of their fraternity
- [00:02:58.684]and sorority experience.
- [00:03:00.800]We also have community and belonging as one of our top five
- [00:03:04.168]values and we're really proud of the fact that our members within
- [00:03:07.874]the fraternity sorority community are more likely to
- [00:03:10.849]have retention from first year to 2nd year.
- [00:03:13.520]They're also high, going to have a higher graduation rate.
- [00:03:16.240]So you can see on the screen we've broken it down for Pan
- [00:03:19.470]Allenic, IFC and MGC.
- [00:03:20.800]You can see that they have higher retention rates from
- [00:03:23.912]first year to 2nd year than the all average Q&L retention
- [00:03:27.420]rates.
- [00:03:28.360]I do want to know it is not a mistake that you do not see NPHC
- [00:03:31.609]listed there.
- [00:03:32.600]That's because we are looking at first year to 2nd year retention
- [00:03:36.296]and for many of our NPHC organizations, they wait for new
- [00:03:39.544]members to be in their sophomore year before they join.
- [00:03:42.680]So we don't always have data every year looking at first to
- [00:03:46.132]second year rates for NPHC, but I also mentioned graduation
- [00:03:49.585]rates and we have between a 10 and 20% higher graduation rate
- [00:03:53.153]for members of the fraternity sorority community versus the
- [00:03:56.606]all UNL average for both a four year and a six year graduation
- [00:04:00.232]rate.
- [00:04:00.800]That is really exciting data for me as the director, but it
- [00:04:03.698]should be really exciting data for you because it means if
- [00:04:06.549]you're a member of our community, you are more likely
- [00:04:09.158]to persist from first year to 2nd year and you are more likely
- [00:04:12.202]to graduate in four or six years from UNL.
- [00:04:15.120]And then finally, our last value is inclusive excellence.
- [00:04:17.840]And we truly believe that anyone can find a home with our within
- [00:04:20.672]our community if they keep their options open.
- [00:04:25.400]So I'm going to dig now into a little bit about the history
- [00:04:27.560]about each of the councils, and we're going to start with the
- [00:04:29.792]Multicultural Greek Council.
- [00:04:31.120]Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Incorporated was
- [00:04:34.467]chartered at UNL in 1998.
- [00:04:35.840]That was the very first MGC organization here on campus and
- [00:04:39.312]then the Multicultural Greek Council or MGC was established
- [00:04:42.785]in 2003 when we had more chapters here on campus.
- [00:04:46.200]MGC currently has eight recognized organizations.
- [00:04:49.520]They are of Asian interest, Latinx interest and
- [00:04:52.295]multicultural Greek interest organizations.
- [00:04:55.200]We are hoping to expand.
- [00:04:56.680]We look forward to having a larger community in the fall.
- [00:05:00.480]But yes, currently right now there's eight members in their
- [00:05:03.085]community.
- [00:05:04.600]And then this lists some of their semesterly events that
- [00:05:07.294]they host, or even yearly events that they host as a community.
- [00:05:10.320]So they host MGC Week, which includes socials, community
- [00:05:13.708]service events, and also some educational programs.
- [00:05:17.160]Each of their organizations hosts their own weeks, which can
- [00:05:20.640]include socials and educational programs as well as just fun
- [00:05:24.120]events.
- [00:05:25.800]They are part of the fraternity story.
- [00:05:27.160]Life and Oasis stroll off.
- [00:05:28.880]They participate in the block party that happens in the fall.
- [00:05:31.880]They've got multicultural Greek one-on-one events that happened
- [00:05:34.706]in both the fall and the spring.
- [00:05:36.120]You're going to hear a little bit more about those later.
- [00:05:38.600]They host community service events and also philanthropic
- [00:05:42.716]events throughout the semester for our National Pampalena
- [00:05:46.832]Council.
- [00:05:47.400]The first NPHC chapter was chartered here in 1916 with the
- [00:05:51.194]ADA chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
- [00:05:54.480]The NPHC Executive Council was established in 2003 and this
- [00:05:58.471]fall UNL will have four of the 9 organizations represented here
- [00:06:02.728]on campus, although we do hope that that that number grows.
- [00:06:09.160]And then as far as NPHC events, we do have semesterly events.
- [00:06:12.520]NPHC week takes place with again socials, community service
- [00:06:15.885]events and educational programs.
- [00:06:17.920]Each organization is going to have their own week celebrating
- [00:06:21.868]their organization, the NPHC Conference.
- [00:06:25.000]They also participate in the FSL and Oasis Strolloff Block Party.
- [00:06:29.920]They're going to host separate dates for Black Greek 101 in
- [00:06:32.831]both the fall semester and the spring semester.
- [00:06:35.520]And then the council also celebrates and hosts community
- [00:06:38.830]service events as well as philanthropy events.
- [00:06:44.640]So I'm gonna talk a little bit now about the new member intake
- [00:06:47.550]process.
- [00:06:47.920]So this is the way in which you join an organization that's a
- [00:06:51.105]part of the Multicultural Greek Council or the National
- [00:06:53.983]Panellenic Council.
- [00:06:55.400]So you might be asking yourself, what is intake?
- [00:06:57.640]I've heard this word, but what the heck is it?
- [00:06:59.520]And so the new member intake process is a process designed to
- [00:07:04.012]keep the university, the organization and those
- [00:07:07.491]participating in intake to keep it in open.
- [00:07:10.680]And a transparent process where we're always in communication
- [00:07:13.777]with each other through this process, with the intake process
- [00:07:16.875]is when new members are coming into that organization and
- [00:07:19.772]participating in their education and learning all about that
- [00:07:22.820]group.
- [00:07:23.560]It typically occurs in the fall and the spring semesters,
- [00:07:26.245]although it's up to each organization to decide when they
- [00:07:28.930]want to participate in intake.
- [00:07:30.320]So we sometimes have groups that participate in both the fall and
- [00:07:33.885]the spring.
- [00:07:34.680]Sometimes it's only the fall, sometimes it's only the spring.
- [00:07:37.920]It really depends on that organization that semester, but
- [00:07:41.044]they do that in conjunction with working with their international
- [00:07:44.600]or national office requirements and a little bit about maybe
- [00:07:47.886]what you should know if you're thinking about joining, whether
- [00:07:51.281]it's you or your student, each organization has a different
- [00:07:54.513]process for what new member education can or will look like.
- [00:07:57.920]But the process should be no longer than 12 weeks from start
- [00:08:00.531]to finish.
- [00:08:00.960]So that's from the very beginning going to the
- [00:08:03.069]recruitment events all the way to the end.
- [00:08:05.000]When we talk about new member presentations in a few slides,
- [00:08:08.426]the intake process is going to have a combination of a few
- [00:08:11.740]different activities.
- [00:08:13.120]There's going to be membership education meetings.
- [00:08:15.560]When you're learning more about the organization that you're
- [00:08:18.180]joining and the community that you're joining.
- [00:08:20.480]There's bonding activities.
- [00:08:21.960]There's going to be community service events that the that the
- [00:08:24.859]new members complete together.
- [00:08:26.480]There's typically some kind of test or evaluation and then a
- [00:08:30.080]new member presentation or a reveal that concludes the
- [00:08:33.327]process.
- [00:08:36.680]So again, we might be getting questions whether it's you, the
- [00:08:39.277]student listening to this or maybe parent or family members
- [00:08:41.791]that are listening to this, How do I prepare for the intake
- [00:08:44.304]process?
- [00:08:44.640]So anyone interested in joining an MGC or NPHC organization must
- [00:08:48.788]either attend Multicultural Greek One O 1 or Black Greek One
- [00:08:52.681]O 1 meetings in either the Fall or Spring semester.
- [00:08:56.440]So I mentioned this earlier, we host 2 MGC One O ones and two
- [00:09:00.884]Black Greek One O Ones each semester so you can watch for
- [00:09:05.042]Instagram for other social media.
- [00:09:07.480]We'll be posting information about when those those dates are
- [00:09:10.529]going to be occurring, but you have to attend one of those.
- [00:09:13.480]Depending upon which organization you're interested
- [00:09:16.055]to learn more about the council and other requirements that
- [00:09:19.026]might be, that might be necessary.
- [00:09:21.360]And those take place both semesters and attendance is good
- [00:09:23.962]for an entire year.
- [00:09:24.920]So if you attend in the fall but you don't actually join into the
- [00:09:27.728]spring, you don't have to attend them again in the spring.
- [00:09:30.240]It's good for that entire year, but you can always check with us
- [00:09:33.007]if you've got any questions.
- [00:09:35.280]The 2nd requirement is you need to be at full time collegiate
- [00:09:39.253]status, so that's enrolled in at least 12 credits here on campus
- [00:09:43.419]or even more and have 12 or more credit hours earned.
- [00:09:47.360]Now you can see we've got an* there.
- [00:09:49.120]That's because there's some organizations that might extend
- [00:09:52.557]membership to first time freshmen, but not all of them
- [00:09:55.708]do.
- [00:09:55.920]So we always feel like we got to give a caveat, but you can
- [00:09:58.750]always check with the organization or with our office
- [00:10:01.297]on whether or not the organization you're interested
- [00:10:03.797]in has some of those caveats that they make.
- [00:10:06.920]You must have a a collegiate GPA of a 2.5 or higher and
- [00:10:10.293]consistent community service.
- [00:10:12.520]Again, we've got a couple asterisks there because it's
- [00:10:15.163]hard to have that collegiate GPA of a 2.5 or higher if you're a
- [00:10:18.238]first time freshman.
- [00:10:19.400]So again, some of those requirements might look a little
- [00:10:21.991]different depending upon which organization you're joining.
- [00:10:24.920]But for the most part, people are going to want to see you
- [00:10:27.933]have a collegiate G of a GPA of a 2.5 or higher and that
- [00:10:30.844]consistent community service before joining an organization.
- [00:10:34.600]And then the final requirement is you have to, you have to be
- [00:10:37.798]present, you need to attend council and chapter events and
- [00:10:40.842]informational throughout that fall or spring semester.
- [00:10:43.680]That's how you show your interest in the organization.
- [00:10:46.160]So you got to show up for those things.
- [00:10:50.760]So we've broken it down a little.
- [00:10:52.120]So you have a little bit more information about MGC and NPHC
- [00:10:54.994]recruitment.
- [00:10:55.560]We're going to start with MGC.
- [00:10:57.320]So you can see we've got a nice little timeline here.
- [00:10:59.720]There's a recruitment.
- [00:11:01.000]That starts at the beginning of each semester.
- [00:11:03.240]It usually takes place over the first one to three weeks.
- [00:11:06.000]And there's informational that each chapter is hosting.
- [00:11:09.120]And they've also social events, maybe some excursions that are a
- [00:11:11.986]part of that.
- [00:11:13.160]And after that recruitment.
- [00:11:14.760]There's going to be bid extensions where people find
- [00:11:16.977]out, yes, you're being asked to join this organization.
- [00:11:19.320]It takes place immediately after those recruitment events and
- [00:11:22.715]then starts the new member induction or new member
- [00:11:25.508]education period.
- [00:11:26.440]Those are kind of happening back-to-back.
- [00:11:28.000]But you were going to talk about various traditions, rituals and
- [00:11:31.303]social celebrations.
- [00:11:32.320]It is very community focused during that part.
- [00:11:35.680]And then you're moving into the six to 10 weeks of class of new
- [00:11:38.759]member education where you're going to be attending classes
- [00:11:41.646]together.
- [00:11:42.080]You might be working on a project, there's going to be
- [00:11:44.500]service events.
- [00:11:45.800]It's really an opportunity to showcase yourself to the chapter
- [00:11:48.915]and show your dedication to that organization.
- [00:11:51.760]And then that ends with initiation and a welcoming
- [00:11:55.373]social celebration.
- [00:11:56.840]It ends with your new member showcase or your new member
- [00:11:59.413]presentation.
- [00:12:00.200]So again, all of that can fit in one semester from start of the
- [00:12:03.893]recruitment process through that new member presentation.
- [00:12:10.000]The NPHC recruitment process is similar, but we want to make
- [00:12:12.832]sure we talk about it because there are some differences
- [00:12:15.479]between the two councils.
- [00:12:16.640]So within NPHC, if that's what you're interested in joining,
- [00:12:19.252]you're going to be attending council and chapter events and
- [00:12:21.821]getting to know both the chapters and members of the
- [00:12:24.091]community.
- [00:12:24.880]You're going to attend your rush or informational events.
- [00:12:28.240]Then you're going to be notified of the selection process.
- [00:12:30.440]You're going to know you're moving forward with that
- [00:12:33.004]particular organization, then starts your new member education
- [00:12:36.052]process.
- [00:12:36.840]You're going to have an initiation that's a part of the
- [00:12:39.531]process and then the new member presentation or reveal is the
- [00:12:42.510]last step of your process.
- [00:12:44.040]So again, all of this can take place in one semester front
- [00:12:47.491]between the recruitment portion and the new member presentation
- [00:12:51.236]part of it.
- [00:12:54.600]So there's a lot of traditions that are part of joining an A
- [00:12:57.524]multicultural Greek organization or one of our national panel and
- [00:13:00.689]a council organizations.
- [00:13:01.840]But one of them that is near and dear to the organizations is
- [00:13:04.923]stepping and strolling and it is one of the most prominent
- [00:13:07.858]traditions within MGC and NPHC.
- [00:13:09.840]There's a long history of strolling and those roots are
- [00:13:13.184]are grounded in African traditions, American slavery,
- [00:13:16.409]the black church, historically black colleges and universities,
- [00:13:20.230]as well as modern Black Greek culture.
- [00:13:23.040]In almost all steps and strolls, members are moving in a counter
- [00:13:26.561]clockwise fashion in a circle and that circle represents unity
- [00:13:29.975]and strength.
- [00:13:31.200]The counter clockwise motion is reminiscent of African rituals,
- [00:13:34.529]so there are many stepping and strolling showcases and
- [00:13:37.389]competitions that happen throughout the year including
- [00:13:40.250]the Fraternity, Sortie Life and Oasis Stroll Off that takes
- [00:13:43.371]place every spring.
- [00:13:45.160]But on top of that, many chapters will travel to
- [00:13:47.424]participate or watch showcases at other universities.
- [00:13:49.920]It's really great to see the support that we get from other
- [00:13:52.895]universities at our event events on campus, as well as all of the
- [00:13:56.168]events that our students attend to support other universities as
- [00:13:59.392]well.
- [00:14:00.360]And then the number one cardinal rule about stepping and
- [00:14:02.976]strolling is to never break the line or interrupt a
- [00:14:05.363]presentation.
- [00:14:06.200]This is to show respect for that organization and their members.
- [00:14:12.480]And I've mentioned this a couple times, but wanted to make sure
- [00:14:14.975]we highlighted the new member presentations because this is
- [00:14:17.315]the part of the tradition as well.
- [00:14:19.040]So new member presentations are the culmination of the new
- [00:14:21.750]member process.
- [00:14:22.640]Newest members present history of the organizations within
- [00:14:25.861]their councils.
- [00:14:26.880]They finally reveal who they are and they often step or stroll.
- [00:14:30.520]It's truly a really exciting time for the fraternity and
- [00:14:33.340]sorority community when the new members join and we're able to
- [00:14:36.456]welcome them into the community.
- [00:14:38.240]So we've got a few photos here that are showcasing some of our
- [00:14:42.296]newest new member presentations from Fall 23 and Spring 24.
- [00:14:50.120]Well, that brings us to the end of the presentation.
- [00:14:52.440]We've included contact information here so you can get
- [00:14:55.268]in touch so you've got the Fraternity and Sorority Life.
- [00:14:58.200]Instagram and Facebook can be found here, as well as MGC and
- [00:15:02.414]NPHC.
- [00:15:03.040]We've included all of our e-mail addresses, our physical address.
- [00:15:06.000]If you want to pop by the office, we're located on the
- [00:15:08.544]second floor of the City Union and then our phone number as
- [00:15:11.320]well in case you want to reach out or have any questions about
- [00:15:14.234]what the joining process looks like, what it might, what it
- [00:15:17.010]might look like to be a member in the community, what the
- [00:15:19.693]requirements are.
- [00:15:20.680]We are always happy to answer questions to to make sure you
- [00:15:23.533]feel comfortable and have all your questions answered that you
- [00:15:26.530]might have when you think about joining.
- [00:15:28.480]But again, so thankful that you decided to join a little bit,
- [00:15:31.606]learn a little bit more about joining a culturally based
- [00:15:34.480]fraternal organization.
- [00:15:35.880]Please let us know how we can help and we look forward to
- [00:15:38.173]seeing you here in the fall.
