- [00:00:03.400]Hi everyone and welcome to the Joining in IFC or
- [00:00:06.203]Interfraternity Council Fraternity Session.
- [00:00:08.920]My name is Kate Rayom.
- [00:00:10.120]I serve as the Associate Director for Fraternity and
- [00:00:12.640]Sorority Life here at the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:15.398]and as a part of my role I also serve as the Interfraternity
- [00:00:18.298]Council Advisor as well.
- [00:00:20.480]So to go ahead and start us off here today, I always really like
- [00:00:23.264]to highlight why students should join the fraternity and sorority
- [00:00:26.091]community to begin with.
- [00:00:27.680]The data here on the screen is some results of a Gallup
- [00:00:30.986]National Health and well-being Index survey and these were
- [00:00:34.469]different questions and attributes asked to affiliated
- [00:00:37.716]alumni from the community really asking about their thriving and
- [00:00:41.554]well-being in different categories.
- [00:00:43.680]So as you can see from the green lines on the screen, students
- [00:00:47.159]who are a part of the fraternity and sorority life community on
- [00:00:50.694]their campus thrive exponentially across multiple
- [00:00:53.456]areas of well-being, whether that's career well-being, social
- [00:00:56.880]well-being, financial well-being and also community and physical
- [00:01:00.470]well-being as well.
- [00:01:02.000]We're seeing that students who are a part of our community are
- [00:01:05.364]really gain gaining a lot of not only college skills, but also
- [00:01:08.728]work in life skills after their undergraduate experience as
- [00:01:11.932]well.
- [00:01:13.600]A little bit more about the Interfraternity Council.
- [00:01:15.800]Specifically, we are one of four councils here on campus at the
- [00:01:19.478]University of Nebraska.
- [00:01:20.800]Lincoln the Universe or the Interfraternity Council is
- [00:01:23.858]actually guided under the North American Interfraternity
- [00:01:27.027]Conference, or Nic for short.
- [00:01:29.120]This is a trade association that represents 58 different
- [00:01:32.684]international men's fraternities across the country and it also
- [00:01:36.687]provides some direct support, resources, services to these IFC
- [00:01:40.628]officers, but also representatives, advisors like
- [00:01:43.755]myself, alumni of these organizations and really their
- [00:01:47.195]purpose is to further the health and success of local fraternity
- [00:01:51.260]communities like the one here on UN LS campus.
- [00:01:54.560]That top QR code on the right hand side if you'd like to scan
- [00:01:57.511]will take you to the main Nic web page where you can learn a
- [00:02:00.416]little bit more about what the conference serves and some other
- [00:02:03.463]resources as well.
- [00:02:05.040]The Interfraternity conference or the ISC for short.
- [00:02:08.920]It really exists when there are two or more Nic member non
- [00:02:12.365]member fraternities on a college campus.
- [00:02:15.360]The IFC is a self governed organization.
- [00:02:18.480]It's governed by 9 executive council positions.
- [00:02:21.040]So these are student leaders as well as an IFC advisor such as
- [00:02:24.575]myself and the council's real purpose is to both advance
- [00:02:27.774]fraternity on campus, but also to provide some interfraternal
- [00:02:31.253]leadership to the entire fraternity and sorority like
- [00:02:34.284]community on our campus as well.
- [00:02:36.800]The second QR code on the bottom right side of the page will take
- [00:02:40.715]you directly to our local UNLIFC web page where you can learn
- [00:02:44.393]more about the council, specifically here on our campus
- [00:02:47.715]at Nebraska, A little bit about our history at UNL.
- [00:02:50.800]So the first fraternity chapter was established in 1875 and it
- [00:02:56.109]was an Interfraternity council chapter.
- [00:02:59.800]This is a really integral part of the UNL history as our
- [00:03:03.997]university was founded in 1869.
- [00:03:06.280]So really Greek life and fraternity was established just
- [00:03:09.565]a few short years after university.
- [00:03:11.640]So it's very, very much woven into the fabric of our history
- [00:03:15.283]here at UNL.
- [00:03:16.320]In the following years we were joined by the the Hellenic
- [00:03:19.154]Association as well as the National Pan Hellenic Conference
- [00:03:22.086]or Council, excuse me, and the Multicultural Greek Council as
- [00:03:25.115]well.
- [00:03:26.840]We have 26 IFC fraternity chapters here at Nebraska.
- [00:03:30.640]All of their crests are displayed in alphabetical order
- [00:03:33.387]here on the screen.
- [00:03:34.640]There are about 1800 total men within the IFC community.
- [00:03:38.040]So there are so many opportunities not only for
- [00:03:40.583]membership and joining an organization, but also for
- [00:03:43.392]leadership opportunities, networking, meeting other
- [00:03:46.147]people, especially those with common interest interests, but
- [00:03:49.380]also those with different backgrounds and interests as
- [00:03:52.295]well.
- [00:03:52.560]So there are a lot of opportunities for students to
- [00:03:55.808]get involved in our 26 IFC fraternities here at UNL.
- [00:04:00.200]Some of the values of our overall fraternity and story
- [00:04:03.049]life community we love to highlight is our community size
- [00:04:06.053]to start.
- [00:04:07.000]So our entire FSL community here at UNL is about 4200 students,
- [00:04:11.174]but again our IFC community makes up about 1800 of those
- [00:04:14.892]students.
- [00:04:15.880]They also have a really high focus on academic achievement
- [00:04:19.202]and so we'd love to highlight that our all Greek male average
- [00:04:22.693]GPA is a 3.3, which you'll see is higher than the all non Greek
- [00:04:26.298]male average for UNL students who are not a part of an IFC
- [00:04:29.620]fraternity.
- [00:04:31.000]We also really focus on leadership development.
- [00:04:33.280]There are plenty of opportunities for students to
- [00:04:35.816]get involved in chapter leadership, council leadership,
- [00:04:38.657]different committees with different purposes, but also
- [00:04:41.447]conferences, both on your own personal organization level, but
- [00:04:44.643]also on the national level when it comes to fraternity and story
- [00:04:47.940]life as well.
- [00:04:49.600]Civic engagement is another opportunity that presents itself
- [00:04:52.941]in the FSL community, whether it's through philanthropy,
- [00:04:56.063]community service, or advocacy for a purpose or campaign.
- [00:04:59.760]Philanthropy would like to classify as raising funds or
- [00:05:02.919]initiatives towards a specific organization that your
- [00:05:05.965]fraternity might be affiliated with on an international level.
- [00:05:09.920]Community service is the actual dedicated dedication to your
- [00:05:12.979]time and energy, to the betterment of an organization or
- [00:05:15.838]purpose.
- [00:05:16.560]And then advocacy is really just awareness, helping other people
- [00:05:19.702]understand what your purpose is behind your philanthropy and
- [00:05:22.650]behind your community service and really just helping others
- [00:05:25.599]in the community learn more about these organizations you're
- [00:05:28.548]supporting.
- [00:05:29.880]Community and belonging is another value of our FSL
- [00:05:32.618]community here in Nebraska.
- [00:05:34.320]We actually have an IFC retention rate of almost 90%,
- [00:05:37.716]which is about 10, almost 10% higher than the UNL retention
- [00:05:41.490]rate from first to second year.
- [00:05:43.720]So this really showcases that we put a high emphasis on
- [00:05:46.768]well-being but also community and belonging for those in our
- [00:05:50.088]IFC community and students who are involved in this community
- [00:05:53.463]stay in school.
- [00:05:55.000]Finally, we have a high value of inclusive excellence.
- [00:05:57.320]So everyone is welcome in our IFC community here in Nebraska.
- [00:06:00.320]And we also believe that everybody can find our anyone
- [00:06:03.232]can find their home in an IFC chapter on our campus.
- [00:06:08.120]A little bit more about the recruitment process for the
- [00:06:11.273]Infertility Council.
- [00:06:12.400]So UNL practices an informal IFC recruitment process.
- [00:06:16.960]So what this means is that recruitment events are primarily
- [00:06:20.160]held during the summer for incoming or first year students.
- [00:06:23.760]Current students or transfer students can join an IFC
- [00:06:26.777]fraternity at any point in the school year, but if you are a
- [00:06:30.185]first time first year student who is coming in for the fall
- [00:06:33.538]semester, most of those recruitment events for students
- [00:06:36.667]will be held the summer before.
- [00:06:38.600]There are also plenty of opportunities for first year
- [00:06:41.455]students to join an IFC fraternity once school has
- [00:06:44.152]started, but a lot of the recruitment efforts are
- [00:06:46.796]primarily focused on summer before school starts.
- [00:06:50.040]Every IFC chapter participates in summer recruitment in some
- [00:06:53.561]way, shape, or fashion, and there are over 120 different
- [00:06:56.851]recruitment events that will be hosted this summer of 24.
- [00:07:00.400]So there are so many different opportunities and options for
- [00:07:03.244]students to engage with chapters, see what they're
- [00:07:05.623]about, meet men in the chapter and learn more about membership
- [00:07:08.560]in their organization as well.
- [00:07:11.120]We also really highly encouraged that students check us out on
- [00:07:14.502]social media.
- [00:07:15.440]So the Nebraska IFC Instagram page just has some more of our
- [00:07:19.468]general IFC information, events happening in the community,
- [00:07:23.431]highlights of different chapters on campus, what our members are
- [00:07:27.723]up to.
- [00:07:28.280]This is kind of our general IFC Instagram page.
- [00:07:31.640]In terms of recruitment though, there is a second page called
- [00:07:34.916]UNLIFC recruitment and this is really a recruitment focused
- [00:07:38.087]Instagram page.
- [00:07:39.080]So this is where you can learn a lot more information about
- [00:07:42.205]chapters through our spotlight posts, what their philanthropies
- [00:07:45.538]are, how to contact them, some signature events they host,
- [00:07:48.611]etcetera.
- [00:07:50.040]Also in the link in the bio, there's an IFC recruitment
- [00:07:53.048]interest form.
- [00:07:54.080]So if you are interested in participating in summer
- [00:07:56.662]recruitment but also recruitment once the fall semester starts,
- [00:07:59.840]we highly, highly encourage you to please fill out this form.
- [00:08:03.160]Let us know a little bit more about who you are, where you're
- [00:08:06.109]from, some of your experiences, and then this form will be
- [00:08:08.917]shared with all Recruitment Chairman from across the Council
- [00:08:11.819]as well.
- [00:08:12.800]There's also some information about how to recruit or excuse
- [00:08:16.179]me, how to contact Recruitment Chairman through the UNLIC
- [00:08:19.393]Recruitment web page as well.
- [00:08:21.280]So our potential new members or PNMS who are going through the
- [00:08:24.320]recruitment process are more than welcome to reach out to
- [00:08:27.120]Chapter representatives directly, just as they will
- [00:08:29.630]reach out to you directly as well.
- [00:08:31.880]And then of course all of our chapters do have individual
- [00:08:34.476]Instagram pages where they'll be posting their own specific
- [00:08:37.163]recruitment events, but also a little bit more about their
- [00:08:39.804]philanthropy events, their members, some of their
- [00:08:42.043]accomplishments.
- [00:08:42.760]And it really is a great highlight reel to see what it
- [00:08:45.046]looks like to be a part of their organization.
- [00:08:48.720]A little bit more about our recruitment process.
- [00:08:51.400]So to participate in the IFC recruitment process again, we
- [00:08:54.411]ask that you complete the IFC recruitment interest form.
- [00:08:57.560]It is LinkedIn, the QR code to the right of the screen here.
- [00:09:00.720]There is no deadline to complete this form, but we highly
- [00:09:03.620]encourage you to complete it as soon as possible just so you
- [00:09:06.670]have the best opportunity to visit with as many chapters as
- [00:09:09.670]possible.
- [00:09:10.920]Interfaternity Council chapters may begin offering bids, which
- [00:09:14.821]is an invitation to membership starting on Sunday, May 19th.
- [00:09:18.600]This is a Sunday after undergraduate commencement, so
- [00:09:21.515]this is when we can start offering or extending membership
- [00:09:24.700]to incoming freshmen students.
- [00:09:26.360]But again, if you are a current or transfer student, you can
- [00:09:29.570]join a chapter during the summer.
- [00:09:31.360]But really, anytime throughout the school year as well, the
- [00:09:34.278]recruitment chairman will have access to your application once
- [00:09:37.343]it's submitted, and they will contact you after reviewing it.
- [00:09:41.040]You may also be invited to attend a wide range of
- [00:09:44.123]activities ranging from sporting events to open houses for both
- [00:09:48.070]you and your parents, roll outs, pool days, etcetera.
- [00:09:52.040]All of our fraternities are open to hosting their different types
- [00:09:55.329]of events as to what what best showcases their chapter.
- [00:09:58.560]We highly, highly recommend that you visit as many chapters that
- [00:10:01.585]you are interested in as possible because this will help
- [00:10:04.239]make the best decision for the best fit for you.
- [00:10:08.760]More about the membership selection process.
- [00:10:11.040]So this is a little bit more of what happens before and after
- [00:10:13.946]you're receiving that bid or that invitation to membership.
- [00:10:17.320]So before receiving a bid, you can contact Recruitment
- [00:10:20.895]Chairman.
- [00:10:21.480]You can attend recruitment events, explore again multiple
- [00:10:24.513]chapters to make sure you're finding the best fit for you.
- [00:10:27.960]You can also research the international organization as a
- [00:10:30.956]whole as well.
- [00:10:32.720]And then finally you can also visit the IFC web page.
- [00:10:36.120]If you go to unl.edu\ Greek Blacks\ the IFC council has an
- [00:10:39.531]entire web page dedicated to more information on their
- [00:10:42.711]chapters, the recruitment process and then that interest
- [00:10:46.007]form link is also on the web page as well once you've gone
- [00:10:49.419]through the recruitment process and you've been extended a bid.
- [00:10:53.800]So on this right side now after receiving a bid, again this is
- [00:10:57.344]an invitation to membership.
- [00:10:59.200]So once a student accepts a bid that they are offered from a
- [00:11:02.140]chapter, we will need to complete the Fraternity and
- [00:11:04.695]Sorority Life Membership form on their involve you account your
- [00:11:07.781]Recruitment Chairman or your new member educator or even any of
- [00:11:10.866]the staff in our office and FSL will be more than happy to help
- [00:11:13.951]you walk through how to find this form.
- [00:11:16.440]But this form is really what tells us as office staff that
- [00:11:19.264]you have joined this chapter so that we can add you to their
- [00:11:22.184]roster.
- [00:11:23.720]Accepting a bid is a commitment to becoming a member.
- [00:11:26.520]So if you do accept a bid but then decide to decline after
- [00:11:29.754]already accepting, there is a rule in our standing rules and
- [00:11:33.097]bylaws under the Interfraternity Council that you must wait a 30
- [00:11:36.660]day.
- [00:11:36.880]Before accepting a bid to another IFC chapter.
- [00:11:40.040]So again, making sure that you are attending as many
- [00:11:42.661]recruitment events and exploring as many chapters as possible so
- [00:11:45.875]that if and when you are extended a bid, you're making
- [00:11:48.595]sure that it is the best possible fit for you.
- [00:11:53.680]A little bit touching on IFC housing.
- [00:11:55.840]So seventeen of our 26 Interfraternity Council chapters
- [00:11:59.319]do have housing facilities on campus.
- [00:12:02.040]First year students can live in university approved chapter
- [00:12:05.682]houses in all 17 chapters with facilities for the most part do
- [00:12:09.507]maintain university approved housing status.
- [00:12:12.240]This can vary from year to year, so if you are wondering if you
- [00:12:15.916]were fraternity that you are interested in joining or you
- [00:12:19.248]have accepted a bid into has accommodations or a chapter
- [00:12:22.522]facility on campus, just make sure to ask them.
- [00:12:25.280]It's a great question to ask during the recruitment process
- [00:12:28.282]when you're attending those events is not only questions
- [00:12:31.134]about their philanthropy, their membership experience, other
- [00:12:34.186]benefits of membership, etcetera, but also what their
- [00:12:36.888]live in requirements look like.
- [00:12:38.440]And if first year students are able to live in their
- [00:12:41.020]facilities, there is a cost that comes with both live In and live
- [00:12:44.234]out membership for being a member of the Interfraternity
- [00:12:47.010]Council.
- [00:12:47.760]Live in membership ranges within our 26 chapters from or excuse
- [00:12:53.240]me from our 17 house chapters, anywhere from $8200 to $13,600
- [00:12:58.549]per year.
- [00:13:00.040]Live in membership cost does include room and board meal
- [00:13:04.600]plans, sometimes parking, other amenities as well.
- [00:13:09.200]Out of house membership ranges anywhere from 2500 to $4500 per
- [00:13:13.869]year.
- [00:13:14.240]And again this is for your membership dues, events that
- [00:13:17.254]you're available, able to attend in the chapter and other
- [00:13:20.376]benefits of being a member of the organization.
- [00:13:23.520]Non house chapter dues do range anywhere from $900 to $2000 and
- [00:13:26.916]a little bit lower because they don't have that facility
- [00:13:29.942]component that goes into the cost.
- [00:13:32.280]But this is a great gauge to kind of see the range of what
- [00:13:35.748]live in, live out and non house chapter membership dues might
- [00:13:39.392]look like for you University approved housing requirements.
- [00:13:42.920]So university approved housing is something that chapters with
- [00:13:46.574]facilities are able to apply for and be granted to opt their
- [00:13:50.112]first year members out of the first year live on residency
- [00:13:53.534]requirement that the university has.
- [00:13:55.760]So they have taken the proper measures, which I'll go over in
- [00:13:58.882]just a moment here.
- [00:14:00.320]Filed the proper paperwork and worked with both the Office of
- [00:14:03.566]Fraternity and Sporty Life, but also University Housing to make
- [00:14:06.918]sure that their chapter facility meets the requirements of what
- [00:14:10.269]we would ask for our first year students and the residency
- [00:14:13.359]requirements.
- [00:14:14.440]Some of these requirements include employing a living
- [00:14:17.554]advisor, house director, maintaining appropriate property
- [00:14:20.898]and liability insurance, passing health, safety and fire
- [00:14:24.185]inspections for the facility, following university, alcohol,
- [00:14:27.703]drug and other policies in relation to those topics.
- [00:14:31.640]For participating in SARV which is our sexual assault and
- [00:14:34.823]relationship violence training that all first year students and
- [00:14:38.337]our residence halls or university approved housing
- [00:14:41.136]facilities go through, but also alcohol education and hazing
- [00:14:44.485]education which many if not almost all of our chapters are
- [00:14:47.724]providing to their new members anyways.
- [00:14:50.640]Providing contact information for both student leaders and
- [00:14:53.654]alumni that are responsible for the maintenance and management
- [00:14:56.873]of the facility is also really imperative to us so that we as
- [00:15:00.040]an office or other university administration can contact those
- [00:15:03.259]who are responsible and liable for the housing facility as well
- [00:15:06.529]if needed.
- [00:15:09.120]Once you've gone through the recruitment process, these are
- [00:15:11.655]just some things that you can look forward to in your
- [00:15:13.936]membership as an Interfraternity Council man.
- [00:15:15.880]So there's things like community being the largest one, but
- [00:15:19.382]alumni networking involvement, philanthropy events, leadership
- [00:15:23.059]opportunities, academic support, chapter events.
- [00:15:25.920]With those and your own brotherhoods, there's a lot of
- [00:15:28.134]really great benefits and opportunities that come from
- [00:15:30.348]being a part of the Interfraternity Council.
- [00:15:32.480]We also have a new Member Summit that is hosted by our nine IFC
- [00:15:35.876]executives every fall semester and spring semester, those who
- [00:15:39.167]joined throughout the year.
- [00:15:41.000]So really great opportunity for you to also meet other first
- [00:15:43.948]year members from other chapters in the community as well.
- [00:15:49.520]And then finally we want to highlight one summer event that
- [00:15:52.655]we will host as a sponsored office event which is Greek
- [00:15:55.581]Getaway.
- [00:15:56.000]So this is June 28th through 30th this year.
- [00:15:59.680]This is a weekend long IFC recruitment event.
- [00:16:01.880]So especially if you are an out of state student and you are
- [00:16:04.620]looking for some specific dates to come to campus and get the
- [00:16:07.405]most out of the recruitment events, this is a great
- [00:16:09.741]opportunity for you.
- [00:16:11.040]But it's also open to in state students as well.
- [00:16:13.640]All IFC chapters participate in our Greek Getaway weekend in
- [00:16:17.579]some shape or fashion.
- [00:16:19.680]Each chapter has the opportunity to host up to five recruitment
- [00:16:22.648]events throughout the weekend.
- [00:16:24.400]We do also have overnight accommodations in University
- [00:16:27.997]Suites plus also meal plan option in Willie Cather dining
- [00:16:31.790]complex right next door.
- [00:16:33.360]So if you especially are coming from out of state or a further
- [00:16:36.510]distance from campus where you would need overnight and meal
- [00:16:39.560]accommodations, we'll have that available for an additional fee
- [00:16:42.760]as well.
- [00:16:43.520]You can register on our website or through the Instagram page
- [00:16:47.377]UNLIFC Recruitment.
- [00:16:48.560]The link to the register will be in the bio.
- [00:16:51.200]This is not a requirement for PNMS to participate in in order
- [00:16:54.893]to receive a bid from a chapter.
- [00:16:57.000]It's just one condensed opportunity, especially for out
- [00:16:59.674]of state students, but also those where campus might be a
- [00:17:02.445]little bit further of a distance to really maximize the
- [00:17:05.119]opportunities to attend recruitment events while they're
- [00:17:07.842]on campus.
- [00:17:10.400]That is all we have for today, but if you all have any
- [00:17:12.600]questions, please feel free to reach out to the Office of
- [00:17:14.920]Fraternity and Sorority Life.
- [00:17:16.080]Our phone number and web page are up here on the screen.
- [00:17:19.720]Again, my name is Kate Brayom.
- [00:17:21.160]I directly advise the Inter Fraternity Council, so if you
