- [00:00:02.960]Hi, my name is Emily Griffin Overracker and I'm the senior
- [00:00:05.988]director for the Hickson League College of Fine and Performing
- [00:00:09.223]Arts.
- [00:00:09.800]We're so glad that you're joining us as a student in our
- [00:00:12.781]college.
- [00:00:16.960]For today's session, we have a few goals.
- [00:00:19.440]I want to introduce you to the college, which sometimes you'll
- [00:00:23.520]see abbreviated as HLCFPA or more commonly just FPA Fine and
- [00:00:27.470]performing arts for short, and introduce you to our support
- [00:00:31.356]team.
- [00:00:32.640]I want to help you explore your degree program a little bit so
- [00:00:36.107]you understand what you're getting into, learn about
- [00:00:39.023]advising and our success planning tools.
- [00:00:41.280]I'm going to talk a little bit about resources and a little bit
- [00:00:44.202]about opportunities that we have in the college.
- [00:00:48.240]The first thing that is confusing to some students is
- [00:00:51.088]how our college Hickson lead college fits into the bigger
- [00:00:54.148]picture of the university.
- [00:00:55.960]This diagram that you're seeing now shows the University of
- [00:00:59.509]Nebraska and how it's broken down into different colleges.
- [00:01:03.280]And you can see that Hickson lead college highlighted in red
- [00:01:07.064]as one of the many colleges as a student you'll likely have
- [00:01:10.786]classes in, in colleges other than just ours.
- [00:01:14.520]Our college is then broken down into three schools, the School
- [00:01:18.218]of Art, Art, History and Design, the Glencorp School of Music,
- [00:01:21.916]which includes dance, and the Johnny Carson School of Theater
- [00:01:25.555]and Film, which includes the Emerging Media Arts program.
- [00:01:32.400]As we think about your time in college, one of the things
- [00:01:35.684]that's most important to us is that you feel well supported and
- [00:01:39.308]have all the resources you need.
- [00:01:41.120]Because as I like to say, you're a human first.
- [00:01:44.960]With that in mind, we have a Student Success Center located
- [00:01:48.245]in the Woods Art Building that's a one stop shop for a lot of
- [00:01:51.639]your support needs.
- [00:01:53.560]You can see on the screen a little sample of our pantry
- [00:01:56.874]that's open for students to get free food or hygiene items,
- [00:02:00.426]whether that's a bag of groceries or just a quick snack.
- [00:02:04.080]It's also a place where you can come and get any kind of
- [00:02:07.041]resources you need related to your personal or academic
- [00:02:09.951]success, or if you just have a question and you're not sure who
- [00:02:13.276]to ask.
- [00:02:15.800]Part of the student success team is our academic advisors.
- [00:02:19.320]Some of you may have already met with your academic advisor, and
- [00:02:22.742]some of you may be meeting with them sometime soon.
- [00:02:26.160]We really want you to focus on this experience with your
- [00:02:30.414]advisor as your student driven process.
- [00:02:33.560]They're here to help you, but they're not here to tell you
- [00:02:36.290]what to do.
- [00:02:37.360]They do want to help you navigate your academic,
- [00:02:40.063]personal, and professional questions, figure out your goals
- [00:02:43.372]and how you're going to get them get there.
- [00:02:45.960]They're going to help facilitate your degree planning and
- [00:02:49.315]recommend opportunities for you to get involved in outside of
- [00:02:52.902]the classroom, whether that be clubs and organizations or
- [00:02:56.258]something like an internship or study abroad.
- [00:02:59.440]You're going to find your academic advisor in your student
- [00:03:02.214]success hub, which I'll show you in just a little bit.
- [00:03:07.600]Many of you have already selected your major, but some of
- [00:03:10.612]you may be thinking you're still kind of between a couple
- [00:03:13.625]different choices.
- [00:03:14.840]So I want to go over briefly what majors are offered in our
- [00:03:18.472]college First.
- [00:03:19.320]In the School of Art, Art History and Design you can do a
- [00:03:24.113]BFA or B, A/B, FA or BA and Graphic Designer ABA and the
- [00:03:28.825]those abbreviations stand for Bachelor of Fine Arts, BFA or
- [00:03:33.784]BA, Bachelor of Arts.
- [00:03:35.920]If you jump over to the Glencorp School of Music, you'll see that
- [00:03:39.566]BA again Bachelor of Arts, but you'll also see BM, which is
- [00:03:42.881]Bachelor of Music or BME, Bachelor of Music Education.
- [00:03:46.240]And then in the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film,
- [00:03:49.537]you'll see both the BA Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine
- [00:03:53.006]Arts degree programs.
- [00:03:57.400]Some of you may be a little more familiar with what college
- [00:04:00.428]entails than others, but I'm going to kind of walk you
- [00:04:03.204]through all the parts that make up your degree so that everyone
- [00:04:06.434]understands.
- [00:04:07.520]This diagram shows you just some of the major components that
- [00:04:10.858]will add together to make up your degree.
- [00:04:15.840]One of the first components, which is relatively new on
- [00:04:19.040]campus.
- [00:04:19.440]So if you have an older sibling or a parent who attended to
- [00:04:22.036]here, they may not have had the same requirement.
- [00:04:24.560]Is our experiential learning requirement.
- [00:04:27.280]All undergraduate students are required to complete an
- [00:04:30.882]experiential learning or El course.
- [00:04:33.920]These can be internships, research projects, creative
- [00:04:37.112]activities, or international engagement like study abroad.
- [00:04:41.320]The cool thing for students in FPA is that we embed this as
- [00:04:44.665]part of your required curriculum so you don't have to do anything
- [00:04:48.345]extra.
- [00:04:49.000]Although we always encourage experiential learning to help
- [00:04:52.194]boost your experiences so you're ready for what comes after
- [00:04:55.442]college, you can see on the screen some of these courses
- [00:04:58.528]that we've designated as El, so that will help you meet your
- [00:05:01.830]requirement.
- [00:05:05.520]One of the big chunks that you'll have in your degree is
- [00:05:08.651]what we call Aces.
- [00:05:09.680]You might better know these as Gen.
- [00:05:12.520]Eds.
- [00:05:13.680]That's the common lingo that people use for Aces.
- [00:05:17.240]Everybody at the university has aces.
- [00:05:19.440]It's the same requirements no matter what college you're a
- [00:05:23.807]part of.
- [00:05:24.880]You can see on the screen there are 10 different ACE categories,
- [00:05:28.842]and you're required to fulfill one class in each category.
- [00:05:32.880]For some of your majors, those will be defined for you, or
- [00:05:36.341]you'll just have a limited number of choices.
- [00:05:39.040]And then in others the sky is the limit.
- [00:05:41.520]For example, in the humanities and social sciences, there's a
- [00:05:44.971]lot of different courses to to choose between, and I always
- [00:05:48.311]recommend talking to upperclassmen and friends to see
- [00:05:51.317]what kind of cool classes they've taken.
- [00:05:53.800]It's a time to explore other things outside of your your
- [00:05:57.057]major that you're studying all the time.
- [00:06:01.720]The next big part of your degree are the major requirements.
- [00:06:04.920]So if you think about a pie, this is the part of the degree
- [00:06:08.165]that takes up the biggest chunk of your pie.
- [00:06:11.640]Every department within the Fine Arts college has both core
- [00:06:15.610]requirements and option requirements, and those both are
- [00:06:19.382]part of the majors.
- [00:06:21.000]So you the core is the same no matter what degree you choose.
- [00:06:24.640]For example, if you're choosing between the Bachelor of
- [00:06:28.340]Education or excuse me, of Music or the Bachelor of Arts in
- [00:06:32.304]Music, you'll have the same core classes.
- [00:06:35.360]And then the options are where you get to specialize in your
- [00:06:38.315]focus area and whether that be something like voice or
- [00:06:40.981]sculpture in the School of Art or design tech, in the school,
- [00:06:43.985]in the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film.
- [00:06:46.920]All of these requirements are put together by our accrediting
- [00:06:49.795]boards.
- [00:06:50.120]That means that your degree is valuable and we'll have you
- [00:06:54.223]ready for life after college.
- [00:06:58.560]The next part of your degree are your minor requirements.
- [00:07:02.160]There are some of our degree programs, and you can see those
- [00:07:06.121]on the screen that require a minor, and this is because the
- [00:07:10.018]major takes up less of the hours to fill up your degree.
- [00:07:13.720]And we want you to focus on something like a secondary area
- [00:07:16.989]of study.
- [00:07:17.480]That's a good way to think of a minor to go along with your
- [00:07:20.882]degree.
- [00:07:21.640]Some people will choose minors outside of our college and some
- [00:07:24.959]people choose minors inside the college.
- [00:07:27.120]It's really up to you and what your career goals are.
- [00:07:30.960]The majors not listed on the screen?
- [00:07:32.880]You still can do a minor Just know that you'll end up with
- [00:07:36.321]extra credits over the minimum to graduate and so it may take
- [00:07:39.938]you a little bit longer to finish your degree.
- [00:07:46.200]For our college, we do require foreign language for our BA,
- [00:07:50.296]Bachelor of Arts and BM Bachelor of Music degrees, and that's the
- [00:07:54.802]four year course sequence from high school or 4 semesters at
- [00:07:58.966]UNL.
- [00:07:59.760]If you don't have this, or you have questions about this, your
- [00:08:02.963]academic advisors are going to help you figure out if you've
- [00:08:06.065]met this requirement or if you have additional courses to take.
- [00:08:09.960]We'll want you to take the placement exam if you're wanting
- [00:08:13.390]to continue a a language that you started in high school or at
- [00:08:16.993]another university.
- [00:08:18.200]But you don't need to take an exam if you're just want to
- [00:08:20.834]start at the beginning in whatever language that you
- [00:08:23.242]choose.
- [00:08:26.280]The final part of your degree are what we call electives, so
- [00:08:30.411]you can see on the screen that every degree requires a minimum
- [00:08:34.679]of 120 hours.
- [00:08:35.560]So think of your pie has 120 hours.
- [00:08:38.920]Anything that's left over after your aces and your major
- [00:08:42.896]requirements and minor requirements, if you chose one,
- [00:08:46.733]are those extra hours to get to 120 are your electives.
- [00:08:51.160]What you do with your electives is up to you, although we would
- [00:08:54.634]encourage you to be a little bit strategic so that you're just
- [00:08:58.054]not wasting classes and time and energy.
- [00:09:00.880]You can see that some of you can see on the screen the average
- [00:09:04.670]number of hours that different majors have for electives.
- [00:09:09.400]For example, if you have a lot of elective options, you might
- [00:09:13.420]think about doing a minor or study abroad or something like
- [00:09:17.311]that to use your electives in purposeful ways.
- [00:09:20.680]But it's a great way to explore other things that are interests
- [00:09:23.708]to you.
- [00:09:26.920]So that's all your pie pieces to add up to your degree.
- [00:09:29.560]But there are a few other requirements, like grades.
- [00:09:33.880]All of your major courses, that big chunk of your pie, have to
- [00:09:37.973]be taken for a grade, meaning you can't switch those to a pass
- [00:09:42.066]no pass, and you also must earn AC or better in those courses.
- [00:09:46.720]If you earn AC minus or lower, then you won't satisfy your
- [00:09:50.562]major requirements and will be asked to retake those classes.
- [00:09:56.080]All students at UNL must maintain a minimum current and
- [00:10:00.417]cumulative GPA of two point O or AC average to be in good
- [00:10:04.908]standing at the university.
- [00:10:07.600]One thing to note though is for some you might have a
- [00:10:11.277]scholarship that requires a higher GPA standard, so you'll
- [00:10:15.296]have to keep that in mind as well.
- [00:10:18.480]If you fall below that two point O, don't panic.
- [00:10:21.680]That's what the Student Success team is here for you to help.
- [00:10:25.520]We can help you kind of make a plan to get back on track, and
- [00:10:29.077]in fact it's best if you think you're struggling to get help
- [00:10:32.577]early so that you don't end up in that case.
- [00:10:35.400]But if you end up on probation, that happens and we can help you
- [00:10:39.096]get back on track.
- [00:10:41.080]Please note that some majors have a higher GPA threshold than
- [00:10:44.470]the university minimum, so you'll want to check with your
- [00:10:47.641]academic advisor to make sure that you know what your target
- [00:10:50.977]GPA is.
- [00:10:54.000]So I just briefly went over a lot of different requirements
- [00:10:57.267]related to your degree.
- [00:10:59.080]All of these requirements can be found in what's called the
- [00:11:02.171]Undergraduate Catalog and the screen shows you a screenshot of
- [00:11:05.418]the website that is the Undergraduate Catalog.
- [00:11:08.440]This catalog is published annually.
- [00:11:11.240]You'll find course descriptions and pre prerequisites.
- [00:11:15.440]A prerequisite is something that you have to do before you can
- [00:11:18.789]take another class.
- [00:11:19.800]So, for example, you can't take English 2 until you've had
- [00:11:23.323]English one.
- [00:11:24.600]Sometimes prerequisites are things like must be a particular
- [00:11:27.943]major or must be a junior, so those are different categories
- [00:11:31.286]of prerequisites, but they're all listed in the catalogue.
- [00:11:35.120]You'll also find 4 year degree plans, which will kind of help
- [00:11:38.413]lay a foundation for where you're headed in the next few
- [00:11:41.441]years.
- [00:11:42.200]And then, if you are aspiring to graduate with honors, those
- [00:11:45.563]requirements are listed in the catalogue as well.
- [00:11:50.280]Just to show you a couple of examples, the screen now is
- [00:11:54.170]showing you an example from the Fine Arts, Fine and Performing
- [00:11:58.470]Arts Catalog for Music.
- [00:12:01.000]When you click into these pages, you'll see the red tabs across
- [00:12:05.314]the top major minor courses for your plans.
- [00:12:08.400]We encourage you to dig around and look at all of the different
- [00:12:11.663]requirements for the degree you're you've chosen, or for any
- [00:12:14.773]minors or other degrees that you're thinking about pursuing
- [00:12:17.832]as well.
- [00:12:18.840]You'll see a description of the degree program, and then towards
- [00:12:22.746]the bottom, as you Scroll down where it says Bachelor of Arts
- [00:12:26.472]degree at a glance, that's going to break down for you those big
- [00:12:30.378]chunks of your pie.
- [00:12:31.520]So you can see the ACE requirements is 30 hours,
- [00:12:34.198]Languages is zero to 6 depending on what you need and you can
- [00:12:37.588]keep scrolling down to see what those big chunks are for your
- [00:12:40.977]degree.
- [00:12:42.080]Over on the other side, under quick points, this is kind of is
- [00:12:46.301]like a map guide so you know where you are within music.
- [00:12:50.120]You can do a Bachelor of Arts or bachelor of music minimum hours
- [00:12:53.825]120, the GPA to graduate two point O yes you can do a minor
- [00:12:57.246]in music, so if you're a major in something else and you want a
- [00:13:00.895]minor in music, that's possible.
- [00:13:03.200]There's an advisor listing and then links to our other degree
- [00:13:07.147]programs.
- [00:13:07.720]There another example page I'll show you.
- [00:13:11.360]In this case for Graphic Design, I clicked on the Four Year Plan
- [00:13:15.090]tab.
- [00:13:16.200]This will show you just an overview, an idea of how you can
- [00:13:20.138]break each of your semesters down to complete the degree in
- [00:13:24.077]four years.
- [00:13:25.240]If you are bringing in AP or IB credit or transfer credit, other
- [00:13:29.180]types of transfer credit, your plan will probably look
- [00:13:32.513]different.
- [00:13:33.320]If you're adding a a second major or minor your plan will
- [00:13:35.963]look a little bit different, but this kind of gives you a general
- [00:13:38.972]idea.
- [00:13:39.800]Anything in red can be clicked on to find out more information.
- [00:13:44.560]So under term one you see some four letter codes and numbers.
- [00:13:48.320]Those are courses and you'll kind of get the hang of reading
- [00:13:51.827]the different ones.
- [00:13:53.600]Art drawing, Graphic design.
- [00:13:55.720]In these cases a his is Art history and if you click on
- [00:13:58.745]those links it'll tell you about the course and any prerequisites
- [00:14:02.311]that it has.
- [00:14:02.960]And again you'll notice the quick points have updated for
- [00:14:07.028]this major.
- [00:14:08.080]A couple of things of note is that there is not a minor
- [00:14:12.257]available in graphic design, so the catalogue and everything
- [00:14:16.807]related to policy and degrees are all managed by an office
- [00:14:21.208]called the Registrar and their website is a wealth of
- [00:14:25.236]information for you and I've got the web link there on the
- [00:14:29.637]screen.
- [00:14:30.840]Anything related to academic standards or courses can be
- [00:14:34.148]found on their website For you all to note, I would definitely
- [00:14:37.805]check out the Academic calendar because it's going to tell you
- [00:14:41.462]when classes start, when there's breaks, if deadlines for adding
- [00:14:45.235]and dropping classes, refunds, things like that.
- [00:14:48.920]It'll tell you when priority Registration is which.
- [00:14:51.640]I know you don't want to think about spring semester yet, but
- [00:14:55.205]priority registration is when you'll enroll for the following
- [00:14:58.771]semester and it's going to sneak up faster on faster than you
- [00:15:02.337]think it might.
- [00:15:03.760]Grading policies.
- [00:15:04.760]I talked a little bit about majors not doing pass no pass.
- [00:15:07.680]Things like that are in their website.
- [00:15:09.920]And then real importantly is the final exam schedule.
- [00:15:13.200]For some of you this may be different than high school, but
- [00:15:15.844]during finals week you don't go to all of your classes every day
- [00:15:18.709]like you do during the semester.
- [00:15:20.120]You only go once to take your exam and so you'll want to make
- [00:15:23.335]sure that you show up on the on the right day and time.
- [00:15:26.880]And then the biggest tool for you all is to know that there's
- [00:15:30.481]the tutorials for using the student Information Systems,
- [00:15:33.792]which is a big fancy way to of calling all of the things I'm
- [00:15:37.335]about to show you, things to help you have an easier time
- [00:15:40.704]with your degree planning and auditing and those sorts of
- [00:15:44.073]things.
- [00:15:46.960]So the first resource I want to share is the degree planner.
- [00:15:50.080]And if you haven't already seen your advisor, your advisor can
- [00:15:53.121]show you this and talk to you a little bit about it.
- [00:15:55.680]But this tool is exactly what it sounds like.
- [00:15:58.080]It's to help you plan ahead.
- [00:16:00.960]And why this is important is because some classes are only
- [00:16:04.277]offered every spring for example, or every other year,
- [00:16:07.370]and you want to make sure that you don't miss your opportunity
- [00:16:10.912]to take classes that have to be taken in the sequence, for
- [00:16:14.230]example.
- [00:16:15.080]Or.
- [00:16:15.440]If you talk to someone and they tell you a class is going to be
- [00:16:18.956]particularly challenging, then you can plan out to take maybe
- [00:16:22.363]classes that aren't as as challenging for you during that
- [00:16:25.550]same semester.
- [00:16:26.320]To balance it out, you can start by uploading a sample plan for
- [00:16:29.781]your degree and we recommend that because it pre populates
- [00:16:32.972]and then you can make changes from there rather than having to
- [00:16:36.379]add everything in yourself.
- [00:16:38.720]And this is something that's a living document or a living
- [00:16:42.515]website so that you want to reflect on it, change it, revise
- [00:16:46.439]it as you learn more about your interest or goals.
- [00:16:49.720]If your goals shift, then that way you can go in and shift your
- [00:16:52.975]plan accordingly.
- [00:16:55.960]The next tool I want to show you is called the degree audit.
- [00:16:59.160]And I know this is really small, the website I cropped down
- [00:17:02.776]pretty small.
- [00:17:04.240]But this is where you're going to actually see have you met
- [00:17:07.091]your requirements or not?
- [00:17:08.280]And this is an again, a living tool that will update as you go
- [00:17:12.777]through college.
- [00:17:14.520]Everything that you see is green on the screen is finished, it's
- [00:17:19.016]a it's already done.
- [00:17:20.680]If it's red, it needs to be done and if it's blue it's in
- [00:17:24.315]progress.
- [00:17:25.240]So the top pie chart shows you total number of hours.
- [00:17:29.080]So you just kind of get A at a glance how far along are you in
- [00:17:32.238]your degree?
- [00:17:33.240]The next bar is the GPA, so the student has a 4.0, the sample
- [00:17:37.697]student and then the horizontal bar chart show you those big
- [00:17:42.083]chunks of your degree program.
- [00:17:44.240]So the Ace, again, those are your Gen.
- [00:17:46.160]Eds is highlighted and you can see the sample student is about
- [00:17:49.653]2/3 done with their Aces.
- [00:17:51.800]If you go down a little bit, you can see all of your specific
- [00:17:55.533]requirements for your degree.
- [00:17:57.640]So if you declare a music major with a minor in Art history,
- [00:18:01.735]then those requirements for both of those things will be
- [00:18:05.561]populated into this degree audit for you, and you can select the
- [00:18:09.925]little sideways carrots to expand out and see what classes
- [00:18:13.886]would satisfy those different requirements.
- [00:18:17.240]It's a pretty cool tool just to make sure you're staying on
- [00:18:20.149]track.
- [00:18:21.080]If you took something that you thought was going to count in a
- [00:18:24.430]category and it's not showing up, those are great questions
- [00:18:27.620]for your advisor because we don't want you to.
- [00:18:30.680]The audit does miss things.
- [00:18:31.840]Sometimes we will make sure you get credit for those things and
- [00:18:34.445]don't get off track in getting your degree done.
- [00:18:39.560]Moving on a little bit to some other college student related
- [00:18:43.333]things, I want to tell you about a federal law called FERPA,
- [00:18:47.106]which stands for the Family Educational Records Privacy Act.
- [00:18:51.360]And this law is what protects your privacy.
- [00:18:55.680]Students and you get to control what the university shares with
- [00:18:59.669]other people.
- [00:19:00.920]So just because somebody's helping you pay for college
- [00:19:03.829]doesn't mean that the university will share information with
- [00:19:07.055]them.
- [00:19:07.560]Just because someone says they're related to you or
- [00:19:10.539]they're interested in your life does not mean we'll share.
- [00:19:14.120]So with that in mind, I would like to encourage you to go to
- [00:19:19.291]your My Read and set up your FERPA permissions.
- [00:19:23.840]Students, you can say who you want to have access to, what
- [00:19:27.455]parts of your record, and if you give someone access then they
- [00:19:31.316]will have their own login to get to your record.
- [00:19:34.320]So you never need to share your password with them, whoever it
- [00:19:37.393]is that you're sharing with.
- [00:19:39.520]This could be your schedule, your grades, your financial aid,
- [00:19:42.664]and whatever you want somebody to have access to.
- [00:19:45.200]You tell us and then we do that.
- [00:19:49.800]Or don't in some cases.
- [00:19:51.960]If for some, if for some reason circumstances change and you
- [00:19:55.305]need to change or update your access, you can do that anytime.
- [00:19:59.280]It's not like it's in effect for the whole time you're here.
- [00:20:01.960]You can update it every single day if you want to.
- [00:20:05.000]So definitely check that out if there's any parents or family
- [00:20:08.973]members listening in.
- [00:20:10.760]I know this can be frustrating when you just care about your
- [00:20:14.004]student and want to know some things, or maybe you're paying
- [00:20:17.249]the bills, but This is why we can't just share things with
- [00:20:20.387]you.
- [00:20:20.600]It's because of FERPA.
- [00:20:22.320]And the federal laws around that.
- [00:20:26.760]So I said earlier that I was going to show you a lot of
- [00:20:31.307]resources.
- [00:20:32.240]This is probably the biggest one I want you to lock in on for, to
- [00:20:37.191]take away from today's presentation, my.unl.edu, This
- [00:20:41.243]is kind of your hub for everything you need as a
- [00:20:44.919]student.
- [00:20:46.280]And I just as a screenshot of the website, but I'll just kind
- [00:20:49.089]of walk you through a few of the major components.
- [00:20:51.920]It's a big Gray bar at the top that says Canvas, that's where
- [00:20:54.901]you're going to access your courses.
- [00:20:56.960]If you have a instructor who says the syllabus is online or
- [00:21:01.099]turn that in online, they mean through canvas and so you'll
- [00:21:05.238]access that there.
- [00:21:07.000]My red, I've referenced a couple of times, that's the kind of
- [00:21:10.463]oranges colored box right under canvas in the middle.
- [00:21:13.840]That's where you will look.
- [00:21:17.600]Change your enrollment.
- [00:21:19.480]Add your FERPA access if you have to.
- [00:21:21.600]If you want to see anything about your financial aid, update
- [00:21:25.356]your addresses.
- [00:21:26.400]See your academic records.
- [00:21:27.720]That's all in my red.
- [00:21:29.800]I always call that the academic business of the university.
- [00:21:33.520]Right below that, the Gray box that says Student Success Hub,
- [00:21:36.356]That's how you're going to connect with your academic
- [00:21:38.826]advisor and the rest of your student success team.
- [00:21:42.040]If you need to make an appointment with anybody, that's
- [00:21:45.631]where you go to do that over on the left side of the screen
- [00:21:49.480]where it says e-mail, that's your Huskers e-mail account.
- [00:21:53.560]And it's really important that you check that you can have it
- [00:21:56.937]connected where it's forwarding to a Gmail or something that you
- [00:22:00.477]like to check.
- [00:22:01.480]But that's the primary way university, the university and
- [00:22:04.053]your instructors are going to communicate with you.
- [00:22:06.760]So you need to put your eyes on it at least once a day and just
- [00:22:09.637]kind of scroll through at least and so you don't miss anything
- [00:22:12.470]important.
- [00:22:13.480]You can see there's a box for the libraries for global
- [00:22:16.550]experiences if you want to study abroad.
- [00:22:19.760]Handshake the green box off to the right side is where you can
- [00:22:23.918]find campus jobs and internships, even folks who are
- [00:22:27.416]hiring in the community.
- [00:22:29.000]We asked them to post jobs in handshake.
- [00:22:31.640]So that's a good place to go.
- [00:22:33.280]And then the pink box involve you is the where you will find
- [00:22:37.440]all of our student organizations.
- [00:22:40.240]Sometimes you'll hear them called RSO.
- [00:22:41.960]That seems for registered student organization, but you
- [00:22:45.628]can search by topics and find what kind of organizations there
- [00:22:49.754]are on campus so that you can kind of connect with other
- [00:22:53.488]folks, other resources on campus that I want you to know about.
- [00:22:57.680]And there's so, so many.
- [00:22:59.000]This is just a real brief overview.
- [00:23:02.200]Career services.
- [00:23:03.600]I just mentioned handshake, but this office is there to help you
- [00:23:08.261]review your resume, do mock interviews, looking for an
- [00:23:12.205]internship or a job.
- [00:23:13.800]That's a great place to start.
- [00:23:16.160]Husker Hub is the office that is your one stop shop for anything
- [00:23:19.838]related to money, so your scholarships and financial aid.
- [00:23:23.840]Even though your academic advisors are going to know so
- [00:23:26.891]much, they don't have access to your financial information.
- [00:23:30.160]So you'll want to go to Husker Hub anytime you have questions
- [00:23:33.726]about your finances, including if you were thinking about
- [00:23:37.062]dropping a class.
- [00:23:38.240]You want to talk with the Hub first to make sure it's not
- [00:23:40.633]going to mess up your financial aid.
- [00:23:43.400]The next office.
- [00:23:44.680]We love acronyms.
- [00:23:45.800]We call it the Cast Office, which stands for Center for
- [00:23:48.612]Academic Success and Transitions.
- [00:23:50.960]That's a place to go.
- [00:23:52.240]They do workshops around study skills, test taking, note
- [00:23:57.761]taking.
- [00:23:58.680]They'll also have they have coaches that you can meet with
- [00:24:01.714]one-on-one.
- [00:24:02.280]If you're struggling with anything related to your
- [00:24:04.857]academic success or just transitioning to college, that
- [00:24:07.687]office is there for you and they're located in the library.
- [00:24:12.080]Caps Counseling and Psychological Services is a free
- [00:24:15.594]counseling service for students, completely confidential.
- [00:24:20.480]And they offer both in person and telehealth options now.
- [00:24:25.760]And so those resources are there.
- [00:24:27.600]And my big point with that is that just because somebody you
- [00:24:30.708]know might be struggling more than you doesn't mean you're not
- [00:24:33.919]struggling.
- [00:24:34.720]And so we want you to utilize those resources and they do have
- [00:24:38.966]someone answering the phone 24/7 so you can always call the CAPS
- [00:24:43.348]office anytime.
- [00:24:45.440]Students services for students with disabilities or SSD.
- [00:24:49.360]This department helps students who have accommodations.
- [00:24:53.360]Maybe from high school you had some learning accommodations.
- [00:24:57.800]They will help you implement those.
- [00:24:59.480]For college, that doesn't happen automatically.
- [00:25:01.760]You need to go to them and get that going.
- [00:25:04.240]Or if you have noticed something and you maybe want to get some
- [00:25:07.746]assessments done and maybe you have test anxiety or learning
- [00:25:11.088]disability that maybe hasn't been diagnosed, then they can
- [00:25:14.320]help you with that as well.
- [00:25:16.760]The University Health Center located on campus has a medical
- [00:25:20.808]clinic and there's a pharmacy and a lot of the services they
- [00:25:24.856]offer are already paid for as part of your student fees.
- [00:25:28.640]So go to their website and see maybe you need a vaccine or just
- [00:25:32.532]a checkup or something like that.
- [00:25:34.600]You can utilize the Student Health Center and if if it's
- [00:25:37.797]something not on the list, then they take insurance or can we
- [00:25:41.275]can help you try to find some insurance for that.
- [00:25:44.800]And then the Husker pantry is part of what we're connected to
- [00:25:48.635]with our pantry and FPA.
- [00:25:50.240]But they have way more things than we have space for,
- [00:25:53.273]including fresh fruits and vegetables and refrigerated
- [00:25:56.363]items like cheese and milk.
- [00:25:58.640]And that is free to students and you just order on their website
- [00:26:02.185]and pick it up from their office.
- [00:26:04.040]So the Husker Pantry is a great resources for students.
- [00:26:08.720]The next three listed on the screen are offices and programs.
- [00:26:13.440]They do programs and also just places to go and be find your
- [00:26:17.745]people.
- [00:26:18.960]Oasis, the Gender and Sexuality Center, Military and Veterans
- [00:26:22.518]Center are all located in the Union and the multicultural
- [00:26:25.848]Jackie Gone Multicultural Center.
- [00:26:28.520]But you can go be a part of their programs.
- [00:26:30.560]You don't have to like register for anything.
- [00:26:33.520]You can go talk to professionals who are there to support you or
- [00:26:36.848]just hang out again and find your people.
- [00:26:41.360]Within FPA.
- [00:26:42.240]We have a ton of resources and opportunities that I want to
- [00:26:46.288]tell you about briefly.
- [00:26:48.120]I mentioned student organizations.
- [00:26:50.160]I really hope that you'll find at least one organization to be
- [00:26:54.371]a part of.
- [00:26:55.760]We always recommend that you join one related to your major,
- [00:26:59.866]but there's also clubs that are hobby based, religious based.
- [00:27:04.040]There's Greek life.
- [00:27:05.120]If you are into sports, you can do intramural sports.
- [00:27:09.080]There's just so many possibilities and it's a great,
- [00:27:12.402]great way to meet people and have support and make college
- [00:27:16.100]more fun, including ensembles which aren't official registered
- [00:27:20.050]for student organizations.
- [00:27:21.680]But it's something that you can be a part of, whether or not
- [00:27:24.645]you're a music major or not, which is how I was as a college
- [00:27:27.611]student.
- [00:27:28.000]I was not a music major, but I played in the Symphony and sang
- [00:27:31.634]in the university choir and it was so great to just have that
- [00:27:35.211]extra community and something I was passionate about in high
- [00:27:38.731]school and got to continue to do Our faculty take students abroad
- [00:27:42.539]for study abroad.
- [00:27:43.520]And when I was in college, I was scared to study abroad because I
- [00:27:47.181]was afraid to be gone for a whole semester, a whole year.
- [00:27:50.400]But what I know now is that you can do a study abroad trip
- [00:27:53.546]that's just spring break or just a week or two in May, right at
- [00:27:56.960]the end of the semester.
- [00:27:58.480]Or of course you can do a semester or a year or a full
- [00:28:01.540]summer abroad.
- [00:28:02.640]So if it's something you're interested in, go ahead and
- [00:28:05.399]start talking to your advisor about it so you can build out a
- [00:28:08.453]plan for when it would make sense to do that.
- [00:28:11.640]And then as AFPA student, there are so many affiliated
- [00:28:15.250]organizations that we are connected with and therefore you
- [00:28:19.123]get to be connected with the lead center.
- [00:28:22.040]You all get free tickets to at least one show and discounted
- [00:28:26.022]tickets to other shows because you are Hicks and leads student.
- [00:28:30.840]You can go to the Sheldon Museum of Art for free.
- [00:28:34.680]Mary Ross Theatre, Mary Reba Ross Theatre has great shows
- [00:28:39.032]that you definitely want to take advantage of.
- [00:28:42.920]And then the Nebraska Rap just wrapped up the first musical
- [00:28:47.235]that they've hosted in in a long time.
- [00:28:50.040]And it was a cool collaborative performance between our music
- [00:28:53.121]students, our emerging media arts students, of course, our
- [00:28:56.053]theatre students, our design tech students.
- [00:28:59.080]It was it was really, really cool.
- [00:29:00.800]And so keep an eye on what shows are coming to the the Rep we
- [00:29:04.909]call it.
- [00:29:05.960]And then finally, because the Hicks and Lead Foundation were
- [00:29:09.471]able to invite visiting artists and scholars to come to campus
- [00:29:13.098]to do master classes, you don't want to miss it.
- [00:29:16.480]You'll see those advertised around campus.
- [00:29:19.080]But you could have string lessons with yo-yo Ma.
- [00:29:22.920]You could take a dance class with famous ballerinas.
- [00:29:26.960]You can talk to graphic artists who work for Marvel.
- [00:29:30.160]There's just a lot of opportunities that are just free
- [00:29:33.207]to you as a student, so you don't want to miss those.
- [00:29:39.000]So kind of In summary, if of all the things I want you to know,
- [00:29:43.125]please check your Husker e-mail daily.
- [00:29:46.240]You know, again, you don't want to miss anything.
- [00:29:48.920]Plug into some of the opportunities.
- [00:29:50.560]It's going to feel a little overwhelming at first for some
- [00:29:53.206]of you.
- [00:29:54.080]But again, just try one, one or two things besides going to
- [00:29:57.747]classes that you can connect.
- [00:29:59.800]And if it's not a good fit, you don't have to keep going.
- [00:30:02.600]You can try something different.
- [00:30:04.800]And then finally, don't be afraid to ask for help.
- [00:30:07.960]We there's so many people on campus that want to help you,
