- [00:00:03.080]Welcome to the Learning Communities Presentation for New
- [00:00:06.456]Student Enrollment Orientation online version.
- [00:00:09.720]My name is Abby Growth.
- [00:00:10.720]I'm an Associate Director with Residence Life and I'll be
- [00:00:13.946]chatting with you today about some of the things that you can
- [00:00:17.395]expect as being part of our Learning Community program here
- [00:00:20.733]on campus with University Housing.
- [00:00:28.400]So you've signed up for a learning community.
- [00:00:30.120]This is very exciting.
- [00:00:31.240]We're so glad to have you be part of our program within
- [00:00:34.314]Residence Life, Housing and Academic Affairs.
- [00:00:37.720]As part of this program you have decided to take part in a
- [00:00:41.031]learning community and you've made a great decision because
- [00:00:44.399]this is going to give you the opportunity to start building
- [00:00:47.766]connections with peers who have something in common with you
- [00:00:51.190]from day one.
- [00:00:52.200]So whether that's a shared major pre professional path or
- [00:00:55.576]interest or identity, you are going to meet people that have
- [00:00:59.127]that common interest, that common thread that runs through
- [00:01:02.562]your reason for being here at the university.
- [00:01:05.960]All of our learning communities operate under what we call our
- [00:01:09.488]live, learn, connect model.
- [00:01:11.800]So you are going to live with your learning community peers on
- [00:01:14.956]the same floor of a residence hall.
- [00:01:17.360]You're going to learn together in shared courses.
- [00:01:20.120]So whether you've been enrolled in your classes already or
- [00:01:22.915]whether that's still coming down the road for you, you're going
- [00:01:25.948]to find that you're in those shared courses to kind of build
- [00:01:28.839]up that academic support system through your learning community.
- [00:01:32.440]And then lastly, my favorite part, you're going to connect
- [00:01:35.938]with peer mentors and faculty and staff sponsors at signature
- [00:01:39.615]events and other interactions throughout the year.
- [00:01:43.120]This is a really great way to get to know other people on
- [00:01:46.420]campus outside of your residence hall.
- [00:01:49.040]Your peer mentor is an upper division student who's going to
- [00:01:52.853]guide you through your first year, give you tips and tricks
- [00:01:56.605]to really make the university experience work for you, and
- [00:02:00.294]provide a lot of really cool programming.
- [00:02:03.240]These might be events in the halls.
- [00:02:05.200]They might be off campus field trips.
- [00:02:07.520]A lot of them are going to have to do with your career and major
- [00:02:12.010]exploration.
- [00:02:12.840]So thinking about what you might want to do with your major,
- [00:02:16.034]what's your purpose for being here?
- [00:02:17.920]How are you going to fulfill all those dreams you have about
- [00:02:21.253]being an engineering major, an education major, a music major,
- [00:02:24.695]whatever it might be for you?
- [00:02:27.640]Your faculty or staff sponsor is someone who works here at the
- [00:02:30.690]university that's connected to the learning community and
- [00:02:33.498]supports programming throughout the year as well.
- [00:02:36.360]So while your peer mentor is sort of your expert in terms of
- [00:02:40.284]the student experience, the faculty and staff sponsors are
- [00:02:44.080]the experts for the field that you've chosen.
- [00:02:47.440]So they are the ones who can kind of connect you to people in
- [00:02:52.302]your industry.
- [00:02:53.400]They can connect you to really great opportunities for
- [00:02:56.700]internships, jobs, experiential learning, and they're going to
- [00:03:00.480]be also providing some great signature events for you
- [00:03:03.720]throughout the year.
- [00:03:06.880]So what should you be looking forward to this summer?
- [00:03:10.440]Be checking your Huskers e-mail.
- [00:03:12.240]You're going to be receiving some editions of the LC Summer
- [00:03:15.721]newsletter.
- [00:03:16.760]These newsletters are fun.
- [00:03:18.840]They introduce you to some of our peer mentors.
- [00:03:21.600]They give you some fun tips about what to pack, how to prep
- [00:03:24.913]for college, as well as highlighting some of the amazing
- [00:03:28.061]resources that we have on our campus.
- [00:03:31.360]You'll also want to reach out to your learning community roommate
- [00:03:34.694]and this is just good advice.
- [00:03:36.160]Regardless of whether you're in a learning community or not, we
- [00:03:39.120]tell this to all students you want to meet that that person,
- [00:03:41.943]or at least chat with them on the phone.
- [00:03:44.400]Talk with them ahead of time so that you've already established
- [00:03:47.682]a relationship by the time you get here and move in.
- [00:03:50.960]So whether you identified someone to be your roommate and
- [00:03:53.998]you pick them in the roommate Finder, or whether you've been
- [00:03:57.193]assigned a roommate, make sure that you open that line of
- [00:04:00.231]communication early so that you can get a chance to get to know
- [00:04:03.583]each other.
- [00:04:05.000]Figure out what you're bringing so you both don't show up with
- [00:04:07.791]you know, an extra futon that you won't be able to fit in the
- [00:04:10.538]room.
- [00:04:11.520]And make sure you just get to know this student because you're
- [00:04:14.181]going to be their roommate for the whole year and you really
- [00:04:16.758]want that relationship to be as positive as possible.
- [00:04:19.440]And getting to know them early is a great way to kind of help
- [00:04:22.299]move things in the right direction.
- [00:04:25.560]Next, you're going to want to let us know your T-shirt size
- [00:04:28.672]and submit your bio for our LC yearbook.
- [00:04:31.640]This is going to be a directory that you receive near the
- [00:04:34.694]beginning of the year that will have BIOS and pictures of all of
- [00:04:38.117]our LC students.
- [00:04:39.360]And it's a great way to see who's in your learning
- [00:04:41.883]community, but also who are in all of the other learning
- [00:04:44.703]communities, because the likelihood is you're going to
- [00:04:47.424]see some other learning community students along the way
- [00:04:50.244]as well.
- [00:04:50.920]So it's a great way to kind of get a sense of who's in the
- [00:04:53.466]program and start getting to know people.
- [00:04:56.440]And then in August, you'll want to look out again in your
- [00:04:59.533]Huskers e-mail for communication from your peer mentor.
- [00:05:02.960]Your peer mentor will introduce themselves and give you some key
- [00:05:06.891]information about how to get ready for our Welcome event,
- [00:05:10.398]which is the first big event for all LC students in August at the
- [00:05:14.390]end of Move In Week.
- [00:05:17.320]Speaking of Move in Week, there's a lot that goes on
- [00:05:20.735]during Move In Week and you are going to receive quite a bit of
- [00:05:24.860]information from University Housing about the granular
- [00:05:28.404]details regarding Move in.
- [00:05:30.360]But there are a few extra things specific to learning community
- [00:05:33.297]students that we'll share here.
- [00:05:35.640]First, you're when you move in, you're going to meet your peer
- [00:05:38.484]mentor.
- [00:05:38.800]They're going to be on the floor, wandering around,
- [00:05:41.970]introducing themselves, getting to know you and, you know, just
- [00:05:45.871]saying hello, making that first introduction as you move in, If
- [00:05:49.773]you wander up and down the halls, you'll see that there are
- [00:05:53.430]LC students everywhere, and you can look for the door decks
- [00:05:57.088]short for door decorations on people's doors that indicate
- [00:06:00.685]what learning community they're in.
- [00:06:03.160]So even on day one, you can start going up and down the hall
- [00:06:07.226]seeing where the LC students live, kind of situating yourself
- [00:06:11.360]in that community.
- [00:06:13.720]We'll also invite you to stop by our table and the Abel Sanders
- [00:06:17.366]Welcome Center where you can get LC swag.
- [00:06:20.480]You can meet LC staff, we usually have candy or some other
- [00:06:23.972]kind of stack and we'd love to meet you and welcome you to
- [00:06:27.465]campus.
- [00:06:28.840]And then lastly, you're going to meet your LC peer mentor again
- [00:06:32.869]and in more depth for our LC Welcome event.
- [00:06:35.920]This is Friday, August 23rd, so if you write down one day in
- [00:06:39.093]your calendar already, you might want to write that one down.
- [00:06:42.880]All of our LC students come together in Willowcather Dining
- [00:06:47.214]Center.
- [00:06:47.920]We play games, we get to know each other, we have a good time.
- [00:06:51.360]It's a great way to see the program all together, 200 plus
- [00:06:54.674]students attending this event.
- [00:06:58.960]Once school starts, you're off to the races.
- [00:07:01.080]You're going to have a lot of things going on, but we really
- [00:07:04.075]encourage you to invest in the learning community experience.
- [00:07:07.560]You're going to have a lot of opportunities to interact with
- [00:07:10.351]your peers, whether it's through floor hours, which are kind of
- [00:07:13.280]like weekly hangout sessions, or through our signature events
- [00:07:16.117]that are planned by mentors and sponsors.
- [00:07:19.040]But whatever it is, there are going to be a lot of
- [00:07:21.831]opportunities for you to join in, meet people, start building
- [00:07:25.225]that social network.
- [00:07:27.040]You'll also be able to build your academic network through
- [00:07:29.840]those shared classes, and you may find that you even have
- [00:07:32.594]other classes beyond the ones required by the learning
- [00:07:35.205]community.
- [00:07:36.400]But this is a great way to surround yourself with people
- [00:07:39.770]who are going to support your academic goals and help you get
- [00:07:43.436]to the finish line.
- [00:07:44.800]Whether that finish line is just the end of the fall semester or
- [00:07:48.340]the end of your freshman year, you want to be supported by
- [00:07:51.554]those around you.
- [00:07:52.480]And then lastly, we just really encourage you to engage and
- [00:07:56.512]participate and own your LC experience.
- [00:07:59.480]The more you put into this, the more you're going to get out of
- [00:08:02.231]it.
- [00:08:02.800]There's nothing here that's required for a grade or for a
- [00:08:06.397]scholarship, so we can't force you to do anything.
- [00:08:09.560]But what we do want you to do is opt in and take a risk, take a
- [00:08:13.897]leap of faith into this experience 'cause we really
- [00:08:17.421]think that those students who buy into the LC model and
- [00:08:21.216]participate in their communities, walk away feeling
- [00:08:24.740]incredibly fulfilled and they found that this is a really
- [00:08:28.671]significant experience for them.
- [00:08:30.840]So we encourage you to to take part in that.
- [00:08:35.440]OK.
- [00:08:35.800]Earlier I mentioned that you'd be able to tell us your T-shirt
- [00:08:38.921]size and submit your bio for the LC yearbook.
- [00:08:41.200]You can use this QR code to take you to a form where you can fill
- [00:08:45.284]out those pieces of information for us.
- [00:08:48.520]And we will put it all together and everything will be taken
- [00:08:51.752]care of for you.
- [00:08:53.680]So if you want to pause the slide now, you can.
- [00:08:57.080]Otherwise we're going to finish up.
- [00:08:59.440]If you have any other questions about being part of a learning
- [00:09:02.479]community or what this program is all about, you can reach out
- [00:09:05.519]to us at the e-mail address or the phone number listed on the
- [00:09:08.510]slide.
- [00:09:09.600]But we really look forward to having you on campus and having
- [00:09:12.880]you here as a learning community.
- [00:09:14.680]Husker.
- [00:09:15.640]Thanks.
