- [00:00:10.240]All of us at the William H Thompson Scholars Learning
- [00:00:12.522]Community are excited for you to join us this upcoming fall
- [00:00:15.059]semester.
- [00:00:16.320]The William H Thompson Scholars Learning Community, often
- [00:00:19.073]referred to as WHT, is a program that helps students transition
- [00:00:22.110]from high school to college.
- [00:00:24.160]All scholars who received the Susan Buffett Scholarship and
- [00:00:26.862]the 10 UNL automatically join the learning community here.
- [00:00:30.160]This includes you as a first year scholar and all the way up
- [00:00:32.992]to our fifth year seniors.
- [00:00:35.000]There is approximately 1000 students on UN LS campus who
- [00:00:38.762]have the Susan Buffett Scholarship in WHT.
- [00:00:41.600]We have a team of professional staff for ready to assist you on
- [00:00:44.310]your college journey.
- [00:00:45.800]All WHT scholars are assigned a Program Coordinator.
- [00:00:49.480]Program Coordinators are your point of contact.
- [00:00:52.040]You can reach out to them with any questions you might have and
- [00:00:54.577]they will refer you to the right campus resource.
- [00:00:57.400]You will interact with the program coordinator in meetings,
- [00:01:00.299]monthly events, and they will also be an instructor for first
- [00:01:03.295]year seminar class Adps 97.
- [00:01:05.480]Additionally, we have an Administrative Coordinator,
- [00:01:08.328]Faculty Coordinator, 2 Assistant Directors, and a director who
- [00:01:11.715]are all willing to assist you and support you personally and
- [00:01:14.993]professionally.
- [00:01:16.240]Another support and resource you receive within WHT is a peer
- [00:01:20.193]mentor.
- [00:01:21.360]Peer Mentors are upper class WHT scholars.
- [00:01:24.880]We're there to answer any questions you might have and
- [00:01:28.244]support you during your first year at Uno, you will interact
- [00:01:31.976]with your peer mentor regularly at monthly events and monthly
- [00:01:35.769]meetings.
- [00:01:37.120]They will also serve as a teaching assistant for your
- [00:01:40.264]first year seminar course, Adps 97.
- [00:01:43.320]Each mentor has about 6 to 8 mentees.
- [00:01:46.440]This group of mentees will include you and other first year
- [00:01:49.570]scholars as a peer mentor group.
- [00:01:52.240]You will get to interact with your permanent group throughout
- [00:01:56.036]the year and EDPS 97 monthly community dinners and other UNL
- [00:01:59.771]events.
- [00:02:00.600]We want to ensure that you are aware of next steps during the
- [00:02:04.241]summertime first.
- [00:02:05.240]If you haven't done so yet, please schedule your academic
- [00:02:08.031]advising meeting today to build your ideal schedule for the
- [00:02:10.919]fall.
- [00:02:11.760]We ask that you register for classes by Friday, July 12th.
- [00:02:16.280]Next, make sure you are enrolled in EDPS 97.
- [00:02:20.320]This is the first year seminar class that all first year WHT
- [00:02:23.517]Scholars take in the fall.
- [00:02:25.360]This is taught by your assigned program coordinator and your
- [00:02:28.148]peer mentor as they serve as a teaching assistant.
- [00:02:31.680]You will also need to add an additional WHT class to your
- [00:02:34.900]schedule.
- [00:02:36.120]WHT classes include a list of science, math, history, social
- [00:02:40.553]sciences, and others.
- [00:02:42.720]WHT classes are the same content as the general classes that you
- [00:02:46.213]will know, but only WC Scholars are allowed to enroll in them.
- [00:02:50.440]These classes are mostly capped at 20 to 25 students instead of
- [00:02:54.073]a large auditorium classroom.
- [00:02:56.520]Your academic advisor will have a list of WT classes for the
- [00:02:59.585]fall semester, but you will also be sent this list as well.
- [00:03:03.120]Other things to watch out for this summer is completing the
- [00:03:06.636]WHT New Scholar Inventory.
- [00:03:08.880]This inventory will be sent to you via e-mail.
- [00:03:11.760]This allows us to get to know you more and address any
- [00:03:14.101]questions or concerns you might have.
- [00:03:16.520]Additionally, your assigned program coordinator will reach
- [00:03:19.220]out to you via e-mail to set up a zoom one-on-one meeting.
- [00:03:22.680]This will give you a chance to meet your program coordinator
- [00:03:25.459]and ask any questions or concerns you might have about
- [00:03:27.965]the scholarship or UNL in general.
- [00:03:30.640]Lastly, make sure to add Saturday, August 24th from 9:00
- [00:03:34.119]AM to 4:00 PM to your calendar as this is the first year WHT
- [00:03:37.842]fall orientation.
- [00:03:39.960]At this orientation, all Fisher Scholars will meet on the second
- [00:03:43.228]floor of the Nebraska Union in the Centennial Room to learn
- [00:03:46.244]more about scholarship expectations and requirements.
- [00:03:50.000]You will also get a chance to meet the WHT staff, your peer
- [00:03:53.146]mentor, your peer mentor group, and other Fisher Scholars.
- [00:03:57.040]We will also do some activities and have lunch together.
- [00:04:00.240]We are very excited to have you join our community.

- [00:04:05.565]forward to seeing you succeed within WHT and at UNL.
