[00:00:03.600]My name is Renee Shabab and I'm the Director of University
[00:00:06.620]Career Services.
[00:00:09.640]Today, I will review the structure of career services at
[00:00:12.813]the university and what opportunities are available from
[00:00:15.986]our career coaches across the campus and the UCS office.
[00:00:20.760]I will also know how your student can gain customer power
[00:00:23.617]experience by participating with Career Services.
[00:00:28.640]There are career coaches located throughout campus that your
[00:00:31.414]student can visit for career assistance.
[00:00:34.000]Many of the colleges have a Career Center your student can
[00:00:36.808]visit to meet with their career coaches.
[00:00:41.800]Now I'll review the differences between academic advisors and
[00:00:44.891]career coaches.
[00:00:46.080]It may appear academic advisors and career coaches do similar
[00:00:49.200]work, however, they do assist students in different ways.
[00:00:52.760]Academic advisors assist students to explore their major
[00:00:56.111]minors and select courses.
[00:00:58.280]Develop a degree plan, develop strategies for academic success
[00:01:02.044]and well-being and to make connections to resources and
[00:01:05.390]other opportunities for support on campus.
[00:01:09.560]Career coaches help students to explore majors and career
[00:01:12.909]options, plan ways to gain experience and to build skills,
[00:01:16.317]prepare and apply for opportunities and make
[00:01:18.916]connections to help them break into their field of interest.
[00:01:23.960]Coaches help students explore major and career options by
[00:01:27.025]encouraging students to complete self assessments and reflection,
[00:01:30.514]research their career of interest and gain experience
[00:01:33.368]through part time or full time jobs which may be located on or
[00:01:36.698]off campus.
[00:01:38.440]Also to apply for summer jobs, internships, research positions,
[00:01:42.148]leadership roles, and student organizations and volunteer
[00:01:45.508]opportunities.
[00:01:47.560]Coaches help students prepare and apply for opportunities by
[00:01:50.966]providing resources to help them with their resume, completing
[00:01:54.483]applications, mock interviews, or ways to accept and negotiate
[00:01:58.001]offerings.
[00:01:59.280]Coaches help students plan ways to gain experience and build
[00:02:02.523]skills by preparing students to attend career fairs and events
[00:02:05.872]and other learning opportunities.
[00:02:08.280]Career coaches provide students with the connections to break
[00:02:11.576]into their field.
[00:02:12.520]Career Field of interest by providing ways for students to
[00:02:15.733]effectively network as they continue towards their desired
[00:02:18.946]career path.
[00:02:20.600]An important aspect of what career coaches do is to help
[00:02:23.842]students in a constructive and educational way so the students
[00:02:27.426]learn how to manage their career even after they leave UNL.
[00:02:31.760]Connecting with their career coach early and often ensures
[00:02:34.495]your student is on track in their career development.
[00:02:37.520]Students do not have to have a major to stop to start their
[00:02:40.618]career development.
[00:02:43.080]Students can meet in person or via zoom with their coach
[00:02:46.212]one-on-one to explore their interests, skills and values.
[00:02:49.920]And as we can see, students are able to work with their career
[00:02:53.192]coaches to help with determining their purpose regarding their
[00:02:56.464]careers.
[00:02:58.880]Career coaches are located throughout the university and
[00:03:02.506]all of the colleges students can take or show ownership by taking
[00:03:06.705]the first step in visiting their Career Center.
[00:03:11.880]Some colleges have walk in availability.
[00:03:14.160]However, to ensure career coaches available, students can
[00:03:17.547]make an appointment with them on our website schedule.
[00:03:20.760]An appointment with the career coach allows students to build
[00:03:23.975]their relationship on campus.
[00:03:28.280]Now we will review what University Career Services or
[00:03:31.820]UCS, does to assist students in their career pathway.
[00:03:38.840]UCS includes my team and I and we are here to help facilitate
[00:03:42.515]career connections between Huskers and their future career
[00:03:46.013]goals by coordinating events and providing other career related
[00:03:49.807]resources.
[00:03:53.280]One of our biggest resources we have is Handshake.
[00:03:56.760]Handshake is a platform for all career related experiences here
[00:04:01.326]on campus.
[00:04:02.640]Students can find employment and experiential learning
[00:04:05.654]opportunities on and off campus as well as career career related
[00:04:09.216]events.
[00:04:10.280]Handshake offers local, national and international opportunities.
[00:04:14.400]Students handshake accounts are created within 48 hours of them
[00:04:17.876]receiving their as your e-mail.
[00:04:20.240]If they're having issues with accessing their handshake
[00:04:23.167]accounts, they can always contact our office for
[00:04:25.729]additional assistance.
[00:04:27.400]By activating their Handshake account, students take ownership
[00:04:30.441]in their career journey.
[00:04:34.560]Students students can also download the Handshake app,
[00:04:38.459]which makes it convenient for students to have access to the
[00:04:42.784]database of the jobs and internship opportunities.
[00:04:47.800]We have over 24,000 employers in Handshake.
[00:04:51.440]100% of Fortune Five companies use Handshake to recruit.
[00:04:55.840]In this last academic year we had over 10,000 opportunities
[00:05:01.345]posted in Handshake, with 1900 of those being internships and
[00:05:07.035]over 29 of those being on campus job positions.
[00:05:13.440]Every year you see us with the assistance of the colleges, host
[00:05:16.902]career fairs to help get students connected to employers.
[00:05:20.760]Through this last academic year, we had over 771 employers attend
[00:05:24.690]career fairs and events and over 3100 students attended our
[00:05:28.263]events.
[00:05:30.360]Another opportunity for students are niche events.
[00:05:33.240]Niche events are not career fairs.
[00:05:35.880]Instead, they are networking opportunities, opportunities for
[00:05:38.960]students to attend and make connections with individuals in
[00:05:41.942]the industries they are interested in.
[00:05:45.320]These events are planned by career coaches with assistance
[00:05:48.063]from UCS based on the needs of the students and their colleges.
[00:05:51.520]Some industries we have covered in the past are Government
[00:05:55.213]Policy and Law, Human Services, Non Profit and Social Justice,
[00:05:59.157]Science, Research and Development, and animal Science.
[00:06:04.120]Career fairs and niche events are a great way for students to
[00:06:07.647]engage with career services.
[00:06:09.480]Both career fairs and niche events allow students to build
[00:06:12.604]relationships with employers who are present.
[00:06:17.560]UCS offers resources on our website for students to use in
[00:06:21.815]their career journey even if a student does not use our sorry.
[00:06:26.600]Even if a student does use our resource, we do highly encourage
[00:06:29.706]that they still schedule an appointment with their career
[00:06:32.521]coach to gain more assistance in using those resources.
[00:06:36.080]Again by by taking the first step and looking into the
[00:06:39.108]resources that are available, students are able to take
[00:06:42.192]ownership of their career journey.
[00:06:46.600]Our office also offers students a chance to participate in the
[00:06:50.243]Career Scholarship Challenge.
[00:06:52.520]The Scholarship Challenge is a great way to encourage students
[00:06:56.355]to take ownership of their career pathway while getting a
[00:06:59.886]chance to win monthly prizes and or a scholarship to help with
[00:07:03.721]their tuition at UNL.
[00:07:05.800]To qualify, students will have to participate in career related
[00:07:09.493]tasks.

[00:07:20.040]Next step students can take include to finish enrolling in
[00:07:23.512]classes as this will give them access to their at Husker
[00:07:26.867]e-mail.
[00:07:27.720]Once they receive access to their e-mail, they can log in to
[00:07:31.232]claim their handshake account.
[00:07:33.440]Just to note that their username is that at Husker, e-mail again
[00:07:37.790]to connect with their career coaches as soon as possible and
[00:07:41.872]to start reviewing resources on the website and also to follow
[00:07:46.088]us on social media.
[00:07:48.760]We have accounts on Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook and Twitter and
[00:07:52.404]a lot of our content.
[00:07:53.840]Content includes lots of bit size regular career information
[00:07:58.570]for students to use throughout their career journey.
