- [00:00:18.520]Hello and welcome to our session on how to help your students
- [00:00:21.771]engage beyond the Classroom.
- [00:00:23.600]We are so excited that you're here with us today and that
- [00:00:26.239]you're engaging in this process as your students start their
- [00:00:29.015]journey at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
- [00:00:31.840]Today we're going to share with you a few ways that we can
- [00:00:34.363]assist your students during their involvement journey here
- [00:00:36.886]at Nebraska.
- [00:00:38.160]There are numerous ways for your students to get connected across
- [00:00:41.325]campus and in the Lincoln community, and we will cover
- [00:00:43.963]these throughout this presentation as well as share
- [00:00:46.457]with you some helpful tools and resources.
- [00:00:50.560]Our mission here in the Student Leadership Involvement and
- [00:00:53.783]Community Engagement Office, or SLICE, is to help your students
- [00:00:57.280]find ways to get engaged here on campus.
- [00:01:00.080]These involvement volunteer opportunities will help your
- [00:01:02.807]students make friends, find their community, apply what that
- [00:01:05.725]you're learning in the classroom, and give them the
- [00:01:08.213]skills needed for their future career.
- [00:01:12.480]The SLICE team is made-up of a few different areas which
- [00:01:15.040]provide opportunities for your students to get involved.
- [00:01:18.120]The first are recognized student organizations or as we call
- [00:01:21.562]them, Rs OS.
- [00:01:22.720]Currently, we have 450 plus clubs and organizations that
- [00:01:26.441]range in interest and purpose.
- [00:01:29.000]We dive into specifics on how your students can get involved
- [00:01:32.169]in Rs OS later in the presentation.
- [00:01:35.280]Next Campus Nightlife, or CNL, who provides engagement
- [00:01:38.643]opportunities specifically during late nights and on the
- [00:01:42.129]weekends.
- [00:01:43.040]They host everything from carnival nights to karaoke
- [00:01:45.777]events, all with the intent of helping your students find their
- [00:01:49.083]community.
- [00:01:50.920]University program, Council, or UPC.
- [00:01:53.360]Nebraska is a student board that works to provide events and
- [00:01:56.505]programs that are appealing to your students and across the
- [00:01:59.599]campus.
- [00:02:00.360]They bring in speakers, comedians, and coordinate
- [00:02:02.651]concerts throughout the school year, all of which are free for
- [00:02:05.539]your students to attend.
- [00:02:07.840]Leadership and engagement opportunities extend beyond the
- [00:02:10.917]boundaries of campus, and our team is here to help connect
- [00:02:14.048]your students to volunteer opportunities at local nonprofit
- [00:02:17.232]organizations, get them registered to vote, and develop
- [00:02:20.204]leadership skills.
- [00:02:23.720]Because there are so many opportunities for your students
- [00:02:26.429]to be involved in, they may feel overwhelmed and not know where
- [00:02:29.419]to start.
- [00:02:30.280]To ease this feeling and simplify the process of getting
- [00:02:33.244]involved, we'll break down the involvement journey into three
- [00:02:36.468]easy steps.
- [00:02:37.760]The first step is to show up, because how will students know
- [00:02:40.717]if they like something if they don't show up and try it for
- [00:02:43.626]themselves?
- [00:02:44.760]We encourage your students to get out of their rooms and show
- [00:02:47.820]up to events and parties going on across campus.
- [00:02:52.280]Your students could show up for large events like Party at the
- [00:02:56.016]Union, attend meetings for an RSO that they might be
- [00:02:59.160]interested in joining, or networks with local nonprofits.
- [00:03:03.600]We hear from many students that the number one reason they don't
- [00:03:06.746]attend events is because they don't want to go alone.
- [00:03:09.800]So we encourage and challenge your students to invite their
- [00:03:12.944]roommates, classmates, and friends to join them in
- [00:03:15.617]attending events and accepted invitations from other students.
- [00:03:21.280]There are several event calendars available to help your
- [00:03:23.758]students find events and activities that they can attend.
- [00:03:26.880]We'll show you a few on the Main Events view of the main event
- [00:03:30.588]calendars that your students can use to find out what is
- [00:03:33.942]happening on campus.
- [00:03:36.240]So the Big Red Welcome website.
- [00:03:40.920]Let me pull that over so you can see it.
- [00:03:46.640]So the Big Red Welcome website and calendar is a great place to
- [00:03:49.928]see what is going on during the first few weeks of school.
- [00:03:53.400]It will help your students learn campus locations, and it
- [00:03:56.196]includes events specifically created to help your students
- [00:03:59.041]meet each other and have fun.
- [00:04:03.480]All right then our next event is the Student Events Calendar, all
- [00:04:08.585]right, which is hosted on our Student Affairs website.
- [00:04:14.080]So the Student Events Calendar is another great resource to see
- [00:04:16.880]what is happening across campus.
- [00:04:18.600]It shows events that are specifically planned for your
- [00:04:20.971]students.
- [00:04:21.640]It includes big and small events, but also opportunities
- [00:04:24.559]like workshops, informational sessions, support groups, and
- [00:04:27.631]study sessions.
- [00:04:28.680]So you can filter by type and all right, so our next question,
- [00:04:44.041]Handshake.
- [00:04:46.800]So Handshake is a great resource for where your students can
- [00:04:50.168]locate volunteer opportunities.
- [00:04:52.240]If your students are interested in volunteering at local
- [00:04:55.154]nonprofits or any other site, then they can log into Handshake
- [00:04:58.375]using their Myread credentials.
- [00:05:01.760]Let's see, I actually need to get to that page for you.
- [00:05:04.480]Here we go.
- [00:05:04.920]All right.
- [00:05:07.680]And then as you can see, there's a video here that it'll show
- [00:05:10.751]your students how to search for these opportunities by keyword
- [00:05:13.872]or organization name & up to volunteer all within the same
- [00:05:16.994]platform.
- [00:05:19.280]All right.
- [00:05:19.840]And then the last calendar we have is the NU calendar of
- [00:05:26.844]events that is right here.
- [00:05:30.720]All right.
- [00:05:32.600]So this last calendar is again the events calendar within
- [00:05:36.950]Involve U Now.
- [00:05:38.040]Involve U is a website that contains portals for our 450
- [00:05:41.639]student organizations in the event that those Rs OS are
- [00:05:45.174]hosting.
- [00:05:46.440]Your student can get into this calendar of events by visiting
- [00:05:49.991]Involve you and then they can use their Myret credentials to
- [00:05:53.485]log on and click on the calendar icon up here in the upper left
- [00:05:57.150]hand corner of the screen.
- [00:05:59.040]Now this calendar will show your students all RSO events.
- [00:06:02.880]Your students will see everything from meetings to
- [00:06:05.813]fundraisers and practices and events.
- [00:06:15.070]Next slide.
- [00:06:16.430]All right, So once your students have found something that
- [00:06:19.715]they're interested in, they must be encouraged to sign up.
- [00:06:23.480]Your students can sign up to be a member of an RSO intramural
- [00:06:26.946]sports team, a fraternity or a sorority, or even sign up to
- [00:06:30.300]participate and engage Lincoln Monthly opportunities.
- [00:06:34.040]Our SLICE office is frequently asked, is it possible to be over
- [00:06:38.178]involved?
- [00:06:39.280]While that is certainly a possibility, we suggest your
- [00:06:42.070]students start by signing up for two Rs OS related to their
- [00:06:45.114]purpose.
- [00:06:45.960]One should be related to your students field of study or
- [00:06:48.927]career goals, and the other to their passion or interests.
- [00:06:52.480]Exploring organizations that are tied to a specific degree,
- [00:06:55.625]program, or professional association is a great way to
- [00:06:58.508]learn more about a particular field of study.
- [00:07:02.360]Another question that our SLICE office is frequently asked is if
- [00:07:06.233]I sign up for an RSO, am I obligated to participate for the
- [00:07:09.809]entire semester or year?
- [00:07:11.880]Absolutely not.
- [00:07:13.720]Figuring out which Rs OS are the right fit for your students is
- [00:07:16.767]part of the process.
- [00:07:18.280]If your students try out an RSO but later decide that they're no
- [00:07:21.460]longer interested, that's OK.
- [00:07:23.320]They don't have to continue being involved with that RSO.
- [00:07:26.360]We just encourage them to keep trying until they find the right
- [00:07:29.334]fit.
- [00:07:33.040]All right, more involvement opportunities.
- [00:07:35.400]So as mentioned before, there are numerous involvement
- [00:07:37.862]opportunities for your students to be engaged in here at
- [00:07:40.414]Nebraska and we want to highlight just a few to get you
- [00:07:42.921]started.
- [00:07:44.080]So again the 1st is Involve View which we mentioned earlier.
- [00:07:48.280]Pull that over.
- [00:07:49.800]So if you click on that, this comes up again.
- [00:07:53.240]So Involve View is our one stop shop for all things student
- [00:07:56.645]organizations.
- [00:07:57.600]Your students can now log in using their Myread credentials
- [00:08:00.868]and involve View is where your students can find a current list
- [00:08:04.354]of all active Rs OS by clicking Organizations or this People
- [00:08:07.676]icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
- [00:08:11.520]On this page, your students will see a full list of 450 plus Rs
- [00:08:15.570]OS.
- [00:08:16.240]The left hand side of the screen also contains a handy filtering
- [00:08:19.692]option to help your students narrow down search results.
- [00:08:27.200]All right, so once you're student finds an organization
- [00:08:30.017]that looks interesting, they can click into the organization
- [00:08:33.086]portal to find a bit more about that RSO.
- [00:08:35.640]Your students can check out the description and purpose of the
- [00:08:38.880]organization, see when and where the RSO holds their meetings,
- [00:08:42.120]and what kind of events the RSO will be hosting.
- [00:08:45.920]Another opportunity is campus recreation.
- [00:08:49.480]Click on that and their web page will pop up.
- [00:08:53.640]All right, so they have the Outdoor Adventure Center and
- [00:08:58.031]which has a rock climbing wall, bike shop, outdoor gear rentals
- [00:09:02.961]and amenities.
- [00:09:04.320]And they host adventure trips both in town and out of state.
- [00:09:07.720]Yeah, here we go.
- [00:09:08.480]Outdoor Adventures campus recreation also provides
- [00:09:11.202]intramural sports where students can play sports against their
- [00:09:14.565]own peers here at Nebraska or sports clubs, which allows your
- [00:09:17.875]students to compete in regional or national competitions against
- [00:09:21.345]other universities.
- [00:09:22.360]So here we go.
- [00:09:24.880]And then some other things they have is group fitness classes,
- [00:09:27.612]where it allows your students to work out with their peers and
- [00:09:30.345]try to find some new forms of exercise.
- [00:09:32.280]And as you can see, there's also Aquatics, youth programs, lots
- [00:09:35.882]of opportunities.
- [00:09:40.960]All right, so next we have involvement fairs and there's
- [00:09:44.118]two of them hosted during the first few weeks of classes in
- [00:09:47.442]the fall semester.
- [00:09:48.440]Now these are great opportunities for your students
- [00:09:50.810]to interact with club members in person.
- [00:09:53.200]The involvement fair is hosted in the Nebraska Union on city
- [00:09:56.327]campus and then another one is hosted in the Nebraska E Union
- [00:09:59.505]on our East campus.
- [00:10:01.440]If if service is up your students alley, our community
- [00:10:04.587]Engagement team can help connect them with volunteer
- [00:10:07.619]opportunities in Lincoln and pull this up.
- [00:10:11.520]All right, All right.
- [00:10:14.400]So we plan 2 hour all day semester long initiatives such
- [00:10:18.392]as Urban Plunge, the Homecoming Blood Drive, MLK Day of Service,
- [00:10:22.945]9/11 Day of Service and again volunteering to assist local
- [00:10:27.077]nonprofits in Lincoln in the Lincoln community.
- [00:10:30.960]As you can see here, there's different places that you can
- [00:10:33.743]check out and videos to see what's been done in the past.
- [00:10:39.800]All right, all right, so now, now once your students have
- [00:10:44.399]signed up for a club and or volunteer opportunity, we
- [00:10:48.680]challenge them to level up and engage on a regular basis.
- [00:10:53.560]Your students can take on leadership positions within
- [00:10:56.207]their organization and involvement across campus and in
- [00:10:58.953]the community.
- [00:11:00.080]Another way to level up could include holding an on campus job
- [00:11:03.260]or research position.
- [00:11:04.960]We want to help your students develop personally and
- [00:11:07.461]professionally while they're here at Nebraska.
- [00:11:13.920]Listed here are a few ways that your students can continue to
- [00:11:16.941]level up while on campus.
- [00:11:18.840]If your students secure an on campus job, they will
- [00:11:21.156]participate in Husker Grow.
- [00:11:23.080]Pull that page for you.
- [00:11:24.880]Here's the website for that, also hosted on our Student
- [00:11:27.431]Affairs website.
- [00:11:28.760]So if your students secure an on campus job, they will
- [00:11:31.573]participate in Husker Grow, which is guided reflection on
- [00:11:34.539]work, which is an intentional conversation between your
- [00:11:37.403]students and their supervisors to focus on connecting what they
- [00:11:40.677]are learning in the classroom with what they're learning in
- [00:11:43.746]their jobs and then also with organizations that they might be
- [00:11:46.968]a part of.
- [00:11:49.240]So there's an opportunity there.
- [00:11:50.960]Then our next one is peer mentoring.
- [00:11:53.480]So your students will have multiple opportunities to coach
- [00:11:56.858]or peer their mentors, mentor their peers.
- [00:12:00.280]These opportunities can include being a Nebraska Human Resources
- [00:12:04.855]Institute or NHRI Mentor, a Clifton Strengths Coach, a
- [00:12:08.726]Wellness Ambassador, Office of Academic Success in
- [00:12:12.316]Intercultural Services or Oasis Peer Mentor and so much more.
- [00:12:17.920]Vote ambassadors So our vote ambassadors go ahead and pull
- [00:12:21.376]that screen.
- [00:12:22.080]It looks similar to the other one but this one specifically
- [00:12:25.093]for Husker Vote Coalition.
- [00:12:27.520]So our vote ambassadors were assist your students with
- [00:12:30.288]registering to vote during upcoming primary or general
- [00:12:33.056]elections.
- [00:12:34.360]Your students can also visit our online registration portal found
- [00:12:37.596]on our Husker Vote Coalition website to register to vote in
- [00:12:40.538]Nebraska or in another state.
- [00:12:42.840]So there's the guidelines there and then the different
- [00:12:46.340]opportunities that are available and then internships.
- [00:12:50.400]So let me pull that page over.
- [00:12:53.720]All right, so internships are also available through handshake
- [00:12:57.097]on the Career Services website.
- [00:12:59.200]Your students can engage with employers and search or apply
- [00:13:02.808]for internships, co-ops, part time or full time jobs, work
- [00:13:06.356]study and campus employment.
- [00:13:08.520]Again, all of that is here.
- [00:13:09.920]And then they also list opportunities that are
- [00:13:11.931]available.
- [00:13:14.560]And then finally, we have education abroad.
- [00:13:16.600]So let me pull that over.
- [00:13:18.560]And that's done through global experiences, all right.
- [00:13:23.160]So they provide opportunities for your students to study
- [00:13:26.733]outside of the US for short term, for short term, or over an
- [00:13:30.557]entire semester.
- [00:13:32.200]So again, you can go through there and search for
- [00:13:34.106]opportunities.
- [00:13:34.720]And we do have freshmen that actually take on these, but it
- [00:13:38.209]usually happens at a little more like sophomore, junior, senior
- [00:13:41.931]level.
- [00:13:44.640]All right.
- [00:13:47.200]So we want to ensure that your students have a great experience
- [00:13:51.182]here at Nebraska.
- [00:13:52.560]We believe that every person and every interaction matter and
- [00:13:56.071]strive to take full advantage of our time with your students to
- [00:13:59.695]help them grow, succeed, and feel like they belong.
- [00:14:03.240]We know that even simple interactions make a large impact
- [00:14:05.741]and we don't want to take that for granted.
- [00:14:11.120]Well, we hope the information and resources we provided today
- [00:14:13.965]will be helpful for you and your students when it comes to
- [00:14:16.673]finding involvement opportunities.
- [00:14:18.760]Please feel free to check out our website or find us on social
- [00:14:21.608]media.
- [00:14:22.400]We would also love to meet your students in person, Help them
- [00:14:25.197]find the right involvement once they arrive on campus.
- [00:14:31.400]If your students have questions about involvement or volunteer
- [00:14:35.251]opportunities on campus, have them stop by our office and
- [00:14:38.796]slice located in the Nebraska Union on City campus and the
- [00:14:42.403]Nebraska E Union on East campus anytime between 8:00 AM and 5:00
- [00:14:46.376]PM.
- [00:14:47.000]And your students can also e-mail us at involved@unl.edu or
- [00:14:53.600]call us at 402-472-2454.
- [00:14:56.240]And you and your students can find additional recordings, key
- [00:15:00.080]links and PowerPoint downloads for orientation sessions by
- [00:15:03.734]searching this web address, which you've already been in, or
- [00:15:07.512]scanning the QR code on the right.
- [00:15:10.600]So thank you for joining us today, and please let us know if
- [00:15:13.650]you have any questions.
- [00:15:15.200]Go Big Red.
