- [00:00:03.680]Welcome to the finding community at the Jackie Gone Multicultural
- [00:00:07.411]Center session offered by the Office of Academic Success and
- [00:00:10.859]Intercultural Services.
- [00:00:12.360]My name is Lethi Garcia and I am the Assistant Director at the
- [00:00:15.704]Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services and the
- [00:00:18.995]Jackie Gone Multicultural Center.
- [00:00:21.360]In this session, you will learn about how students from diverse
- [00:00:24.895]identities, cultural and ethnic backgrounds can get connected
- [00:00:28.320]and find a sense of belonging on campus through academic and
- [00:00:31.690]social resources at the Jackie Gone Multicultural Center and
- [00:00:35.060]the Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services.
- [00:00:39.840]Before we get started, we would like to recognize the land in
- [00:00:43.083]which we reside.
- [00:00:45.920]The University of Nebraska is a public land grant institution
- [00:00:50.138]with campuses and programs across the state that reside on
- [00:00:54.153]the past, present and future of the lands of the Planning Ponca,
- [00:00:58.576]ODA, Missouria, Omaha, Dakota, Lakota, Arapahoe, Cheyenne and
- [00:01:02.795]Paw peoples, as well as the relocated Ho, Chung, Winnebago,
- [00:01:06.878]Iowa and Sauk and Fox peoples.
- [00:01:09.880]This knowledge allows us to better understand that our
- [00:01:13.252]opportunity to impact the state of Nebraska and beyond and
- [00:01:16.870]occupy these lands is a result of a history of Native and
- [00:01:20.427]Indigenous peoples experience of displacement, violence,
- [00:01:23.923]settlement and survival which continues to inform our present
- [00:01:27.725]and future.
- [00:01:29.560]So with that, we pay our respects to Native elders, past
- [00:01:32.832]and present, and recognize that at the Office of Academic
- [00:01:36.162]Success in Intercultural Services and the Jackie Gone
- [00:01:39.262]Multicultural Center, we are committed to providing inclusive
- [00:01:42.822]spaces for all to exist.
- [00:01:46.760]The Jackie Gone Multicultural Center, often referred to as the
- [00:01:51.336]JGMC or the GONE, is located on City Campus right next to the
- [00:01:55.840]City Union.
- [00:01:57.760]The JGMC is home to the Office of Academic Success and
- [00:02:01.535]Intercultural Services known as Oasis, and Oasis is a unit
- [00:02:05.585]within student fairs at Nebraska.
- [00:02:09.120]The Gone offers various resources throughout the
- [00:02:12.465]building, starting with the Oasis Lounge and Staff Support
- [00:02:16.493]Offices located on the 1st floor, event rooms and study
- [00:02:20.316]spaces on the 2nd floor, and the Kawasaki Reading Room is located
- [00:02:24.822]on the third floor.
- [00:02:26.840]If students are looking for a great place to study and amazing
- [00:02:29.990]views of campus, the Jackie Bond Multicultural Center is a place
- [00:02:33.240]that you must visit.
- [00:02:37.360]Our mission is built on three pillars, academic excellence,
- [00:02:40.683]diversity awareness, and social engagement.
- [00:02:43.560]The main goal and objective of the leases is to ensure that
- [00:02:46.904]students have a smooth transition from high school to
- [00:02:49.914]college.
- [00:02:50.640]We want to help students succeed by equipping them with the
- [00:02:54.494]necessary tools and resources they need to graduate from the
- [00:02:58.413]university.
- [00:03:01.680]Oasis and the Jackie Gone Multicultural Center serve all
- [00:03:04.727]University of Nebraska Lincoln students.
- [00:03:06.920]Our services serve students as they make their adjustment to
- [00:03:10.933]the University.
- [00:03:12.120]We place an emphasis on creating inclusive spaces and
- [00:03:15.168]opportunities for all students transitioning to UNL.
- [00:03:19.680]And at Oasis, we help students increase their diversity
- [00:03:22.653]awareness and provide support for students who may feel
- [00:03:25.626]isolated because of traits, beliefs, or backgrounds.
- [00:03:28.680]We are a place that is safe for everyone.
- [00:03:38.080]Oasis strives to educate and form and empower students,
- [00:03:42.178]faculty, and staff at UML by promoting awareness on various
- [00:03:46.569]community and social issues, education resource, encourage
- [00:03:50.887]academic and career exploration, finding community, and encourage
- [00:03:55.717]advocacy for self and others.
- [00:03:58.440]Our programs and services aim to touch on all of these five
- [00:04:02.834]different values.
- [00:04:04.680]In the next few slides, I will share different resources and
- [00:04:08.256]opportunities that can help students sign community through
- [00:04:11.773]the Oasis.
- [00:04:12.560]Three main pillars.
- [00:04:14.000]I will break down each of those pillars in greater detail and
- [00:04:17.483]highlight specific programs and services that fall under each
- [00:04:20.966]pillar.
- [00:04:22.160]Again, our programs and services align with the 1st for student
- [00:04:26.850]power experience at the University finding community
- [00:04:30.735]through academic excellence, which is our first pillar.
- [00:04:35.600]There are several ways students can find a community first.
- [00:04:39.240]One of those is through the Power program, which is the
- [00:04:42.578]Student Success First Year Retention program.
- [00:04:45.760]Students who received the Nebraska Achievement Scholarship
- [00:04:49.191]are required to participate, but any first year student, whether
- [00:04:52.972]they received a scholarship or not, can opt in into the program
- [00:04:56.694]at no cost to them.
- [00:04:59.040]This program has a peer mentorship component which means
- [00:05:02.747]that first year students who opt into the POWER program and who
- [00:05:06.910]participate get paired with a peer who is an upper class
- [00:05:10.617]student who has been through the program and that peer gets to be
- [00:05:14.910]their peer mentor and meets with them that supports them
- [00:05:18.617]throughout their first year here at the university.
- [00:05:23.240]Other academic experiences to find community is through Study
- [00:05:26.870]Studio.
- [00:05:27.600]This is our free tutoring service that is open to all
- [00:05:31.040]students at the university.
- [00:05:34.080]Students can also find community by connecting with their
- [00:05:37.484]assigned professional staff and meeting with them for these
- [00:05:41.006]college transition Check insurance.
- [00:05:43.400]This is an opportunity for your students to connect with our
- [00:05:48.244]staff, discuss academics, career support, personal and social
- [00:05:53.168]support, talking about finding community and helping your
- [00:05:57.774]students really understand what becoming an engaged scholar
- [00:06:02.539]within the university looks like.
- [00:06:05.440]And so that is what our staff is here to do, to have
- [00:06:08.404]conversations with students and helping them find community on
- [00:06:11.928]campus.
- [00:06:14.200]We also like to be in community as we recognize the many
- [00:06:19.065]accomplishments that students have in their academics.
- [00:06:24.400]With our upper class students, we host receptions to
- [00:06:27.760]acknowledge their academic achievements.
- [00:06:30.360]If they achieved a 3.5 GPA and above, they get invited into
- [00:06:33.748]these receptions for first year students.
- [00:06:36.480]If you achieve a four point O GPA during your first year, you
- [00:06:40.274]also get invited into these receptions to really celebrate
- [00:06:43.886]those academic achievements.
- [00:06:46.880]We also like to celebrate our graduating seniors and Oasis
- [00:06:51.337]scholars through at through graduation receptions and at
- [00:06:55.644]these three different types of receptions, family and friends
- [00:07:00.328]get invited and so we really like to celebrate and
- [00:07:04.182]acknowledge the success of our scholars finding community
- [00:07:08.564]through diversity awareness.
- [00:07:10.960]So that is our second pillar.
- [00:07:12.960]And so our professional staff focus on coordinating and
- [00:07:17.267]planning events that are focused on diversity, engagement,
- [00:07:21.806]creating spaces and opportunities that can really
- [00:07:25.652]allow students to connect with other people, gain perspectives,
- [00:07:30.575]learn from each other and engage in diverse experiences.
- [00:07:35.280]One of the programs that we host is called Dish It Up, which is
- [00:07:39.060]an interactive conversation that takes place in the Oasis Lounge.
- [00:07:43.600]And this is a place where we get to engage in meaningful
- [00:07:47.577]discourse, talk about current national, international topics
- [00:07:51.834]that are important.
- [00:07:54.160]This is a place where students can learn to voice their opinion
- [00:07:58.467]and engage in meaningful conversations.
- [00:08:01.840]We also host lunch and learn, and this is an opportunity where
- [00:08:06.283]students can come into the Oasis Lounge, have lunch and learn
- [00:08:10.657]about a campus resource and service that is offered to them.
- [00:08:14.960]And so we like to partner with different departments and bring
- [00:08:18.612]those resources to a space that is familiar to students here in
- [00:08:22.322]the lounge.
- [00:08:24.400]We also coordinate and promote signature cultural events
- [00:08:28.166]throughout the academic year for students to participate.
- [00:08:33.000]We also host diversity trainings.
- [00:08:35.960]One of those is called the Endocu Ally Training, which is
- [00:08:38.852]offered in the fall and spring and then we also have Ouch
- [00:08:41.745]training which is available upon request.
- [00:08:44.120]These trainings again are meant to provide opportunities for
- [00:08:48.575]students, faculty and standards to learn about relevant, diverse
- [00:08:53.322]topics and get training on those particular issues.
- [00:09:03.550]There are several ways to be socially engaged on campus and
- [00:09:07.186]finding community through social engagement and this is our last
- [00:09:11.125]pillar.
- [00:09:12.760]And so our professional staff hosts events that promote
- [00:09:17.683]national and international cultural celebrations.
- [00:09:22.560]Some of the common ones that we host annually are the Oasis Kick
- [00:09:26.220]Off, which is our Welcome Back event.
- [00:09:28.520]We host Fiesta Anna Green to commemorate Hispanic Heritage
- [00:09:32.768]Month.
- [00:09:33.480]We host Black History Month events, Apita Asian Pacific
- [00:09:37.695]Islander against the American months and celebrations
- [00:09:41.760]throughout that particular month.
- [00:09:44.840]We also partner with the Oasis Student Advisory Board, which is
- [00:09:49.444]a student, excuse me, a registered student organization
- [00:09:53.473]led by students and they get to plan peer events for the Oasis
- [00:09:58.006]community and one of their signature events is called Oasis
- [00:10:02.323]de Stress Fest, which happens a week before finals each
- [00:10:06.352]semester.
- [00:10:07.000]So fall and spring.
- [00:10:08.520]Our Oasis Student Advisory Board is busy planning these types of
- [00:10:12.556]experiences to be in community with their peers.
- [00:10:16.080]It is a great way to gain leadership skills and be part of
- [00:10:22.847]a community on campus, finding community through social
- [00:10:29.270]engagement and other opportunities.
- [00:10:33.400]Here at UNL, students can be part of different cultural
- [00:10:39.588]registered organizations here on campus.
- [00:10:44.800]Essentially, these are clubs, organizations that students can
- [00:10:48.545]participate that are multicultural.
- [00:10:52.280]This is a brief list, but it's not all exclusive to to these.
- [00:11:00.640]There are many more organizations on campus and that
- [00:11:04.440]your students can be part of.
- [00:11:06.560]And so these are just some of the most common ones that are
- [00:11:10.627]also housed within the Jackie Gone Multi Cultural Center.
- [00:11:14.840]And that means they have specific offices where they meet
- [00:11:18.610]as a group in the third floor of the Jackie Gone Multicultural
- [00:11:22.705]Center.
- [00:11:23.480]So some of those registered student organizations are the
- [00:11:27.428]African Peoples Schools Union, Black Student Union, Asian
- [00:11:31.377]Student Union, the Mexican American Student Association,
- [00:11:35.257]the University of Nebraska, Inter Travel Exchange, Sister
- [00:11:39.206]Circle, Define American.
- [00:11:41.160]We have the National Panama Panama Council, We Multicultural
- [00:11:45.033]Re Council as well.
- [00:11:46.440]So different organizations that are available on campus,
- [00:11:49.860]different opportunities to find community.
- [00:11:57.320]There are many benefits to becoming Oasis Scholar and
- [00:11:59.912]participating in our community.
- [00:12:01.840]Students gain familiarity with UNL campus and academic
- [00:12:05.732]resources.
- [00:12:07.560]Students have that tailored academic and career support to
- [00:12:11.027]assist in their transition to college.
- [00:12:13.560]Students also have access to many leadership opportunities
- [00:12:17.311]through the Oasis Student Advisory Board or Oasis Student
- [00:12:20.999]Worker positions.
- [00:12:22.600]We have our learning Consultant position which is our peer tutor
- [00:12:26.991]position.
- [00:12:27.840]We have our peer mentor positions where students can
- [00:12:31.071]apply after their first year.
- [00:12:33.000]We also have our our Oasis student front desk positions,
- [00:12:36.891]great opportunities for students to gain leadership and
- [00:12:40.714]transferable skills.
- [00:12:42.720]They also have the opportunity to increase their network with
- [00:12:46.290]people from different backgrounds in perspectives and
- [00:12:49.400]awareness of diversity related issues and broadening their
- [00:12:52.798]understanding and preparedness for a diverse and global
- [00:12:56.024]workforce.
- [00:13:00.520]As a participant of the Oasis Student Success Program and
- [00:13:04.588]community, students are encouraged to build connections
- [00:13:08.515]with professional staff and peer mentors while being exposed to
- [00:13:13.004]many cultural and academic programs.
- [00:13:16.680]We really want students to find community as they're here
- [00:13:20.680]working on their academics, and so if you are interested in
