- [00:00:02.320]Hi, my name is Christy Saunders, I'm the Associate Director of
- [00:00:05.567]Husker Hub and today we're gonna be chatting about the top five
- [00:00:08.866]things you need to know right now about paying for college.
- [00:00:13.520]So just to start, if you have not already used our services,
- [00:00:17.327]Husker Hub is the one stop shop on campus for students and
- [00:00:21.009]parents to get their questions answered about how to register
- [00:00:24.879]for courses, academic transcripts, understanding and
- [00:00:28.187]paying their student bill and of course applying for or
- [00:00:31.682]understanding their scholarship and financial aid offer.
- [00:00:36.480]We like to say that we are where students go to handle the
- [00:00:39.125]business side of being a Husker.
- [00:00:40.760]So that way you can focus on the fun and of course the academic
- [00:00:44.696]side of college.
- [00:00:46.960]So top five things you need to know right now we're going to be
- [00:00:51.617]chatting about student billing with specifically when will you
- [00:00:56.202]receive that bill, how do you pay and ways to pay and of
- [00:01:00.351]course when are these bills due.
- [00:01:03.160]We're also going to chat about release of funds.
- [00:01:05.520]So if you receive financial aid or scholarships, when will those
- [00:01:09.429]disperse to help pay for your bill and what's that general
- [00:01:12.978]timeline?
- [00:01:14.440]We also talked about financial aid and some of those common
- [00:01:17.210]mistakes that we see students and parents make that might
- [00:01:19.888]actually delay disbursement of those funds.
- [00:01:22.760]And we also are going to chat about how to keep that support
- [00:01:25.810]system in the know.
- [00:01:26.760]If you have parents, guardians or other people in your life who
- [00:01:30.613]you want to have access to your students, bill or other parts of
- [00:01:34.527]your academic record, we will talk about how we communicate
- [00:01:38.140]with you, how to grant guest access, and of course how to add
- [00:01:41.873]them as an authorized payer.
- [00:01:44.160]And finally, I will highlight a few resources that I think are
- [00:01:47.794]important for you to know about.
- [00:01:49.760]So that way you know how to advocate for yourself and get
- [00:01:52.187]answers to your questions at any time of the day.
- [00:01:55.800]O To start, we're going to chat about student billing and those
- [00:01:58.488]important dates.
- [00:01:59.400]These dates are some of the most commonly asked questions that we
- [00:02:02.855]received from folks around new student orientation time.
- [00:02:06.200]So number one is when will you receive your first bill?
- [00:02:11.200]You will get that first bill to view in your Myred portal on
- [00:02:16.547]August 25th.
- [00:02:18.080]So if you've been checking your Myred very frequently after you
- [00:02:21.771]start enrolling in courses, you may actually see some charges
- [00:02:25.347]added to your account and you may see a balance there.
- [00:02:28.800]Just know that the first official bill will not be ready
- [00:02:33.058]until August 25th, so definitely wait until that is available to
- [00:02:37.915]see the entire view of what you owe.
- [00:02:41.320]That first bill due date is September 12th, so you do have
- [00:02:46.010]time in there to one.
- [00:02:47.680]Make sure that your financial aid and scholarships dispersed,
- [00:02:51.763]but also to make a plan for payment after that first initial
- [00:02:55.781]due date of September 12th.
- [00:02:57.800]Monthly bills will always be made available to the student on
- [00:03:01.242]the 25th of each month.
- [00:03:02.520]They have a balance and the bill will be then due the 12th of the
- [00:03:06.757]following month after you receive that notification.
- [00:03:11.080]Notifications are only sent to a student's Huskers e-mail
- [00:03:14.691]address, so I will always tell folks make sure you're checking
- [00:03:18.613]your Huskers e-mail regularly since that is the main way that
- [00:03:22.473]we as college administrators will contact you.
- [00:03:27.560]So now paying the student bill.
- [00:03:29.520]If you've been in my red, you may have noticed the student
- [00:03:33.315]account tab and you will see this box here on your homepage.
- [00:03:37.720]So this is going to be just the quick view of what your current
- [00:03:42.459]balance is as well as what your upcoming payments do is.
- [00:03:46.960]So for starters this current balance here.
- [00:03:50.280]So for the student example, the student has a current balance of
- [00:03:55.296]$3246.
- [00:03:56.040]This is the total amount that they owe, and this does not
- [00:03:59.949]necessarily mean that all of it is due right now.
- [00:04:03.480]However, it's good to know how much you are currently being
- [00:04:06.739]billed.
- [00:04:07.120]In general, the bill date is essentially the date that the
- [00:04:10.932]student had that bill generated.
- [00:04:13.200]So in this case, the student had their last bill generated on
- [00:04:18.453]January 23rd, next payment due.
- [00:04:21.080]This is the amount that is due on that next bill due date of
- [00:04:25.890]the 12th.
- [00:04:26.600]So in this case would be that February 12th deadline.
- [00:04:30.600]So in this case, while the student has this current balance
- [00:04:34.134]here, they do actually do not owe anything until the following
- [00:04:37.846]month.
- [00:04:38.680]So as you can see here, this payment due is how much you need
- [00:04:42.718]to pay in order to be in good at good financial standing by this
- [00:04:46.953]212 deadline.
- [00:04:49.040]So for folks who want a more in depth view of what is included
- [00:04:52.634]on that bill, you're going to want to use this account
- [00:04:55.772]activity tab here.
- [00:04:57.000]This provides full full details as well as an up to So if a
- [00:05:01.058]student wanted to understand what that 3000 number was, they
- [00:05:05.184]could go to the account activity and they'll be able to see that
- [00:05:09.580]real time transactions of what has been added.
- [00:05:15.000]So after you select pay bill on that screen, you will be taken
- [00:05:18.646]to our payment portal.
- [00:05:20.320]This online payment portal is available 24/7 and if you decide
- [00:05:25.172]to pay with an online check or this bank account option there
- [00:05:29.948]are no additional fees.
- [00:05:32.200]Credit and debit cards are also available.
- [00:05:34.800]You can see that option here.
- [00:05:36.320]However, just know that there is a non refundable processing fee
- [00:05:40.441]that applies to that options.
- [00:05:42.280]So especially if you were going to pay with a debit card, please
- [00:05:45.951]please please do the bank account or check option because
- [00:05:49.227]you will you will avoid a processing fee.
- [00:05:52.680]Some other payment options may include a personal check that
- [00:05:57.068]you can drop off in person 529 plans which are initiated with
- [00:06:01.529]your 529 plan organization, bank bill, pay money order, cashier's
- [00:06:06.277]check and of course foreign currency payments which you can
- [00:06:10.594]see is facilitated by a third party vendor here.
- [00:06:15.920]So another option that we'd like to highlight is the Husker
- [00:06:18.944]payment plan.
- [00:06:19.840]So this is a payment plan that is available to all students and
- [00:06:23.698]it's splits Bill splits that bill that's due on the 12th into
- [00:06:27.437]three payments including a non refundable enrollment fee of $25
- [00:06:31.296]per semester.
- [00:06:33.200]Students can register for the plan in my red under that
- [00:06:36.251]student accounts tab and just know that you have to enroll
- [00:06:39.465]each semester you wish to participate in that house care
- [00:06:42.571]payment plan.
- [00:06:44.400]There is only a a specific amount of time that you can
- [00:06:47.588]enroll in the payment plan that is when the bill is generated.
- [00:06:51.240]So for fall it'd be August 25th through that bill due date of
- [00:06:55.523]September 12th.
- [00:06:56.800]So just ensure that if you want to take advantage of the Husker
- [00:07:00.752]payment plan that you must do so within that time frame or else
- [00:07:04.705]you will not be able to participate in this for fall.
- [00:07:08.840]If you are interested to learn a little bit more about this, you
- [00:07:11.893]can scan this QR code right here and it will will take you to the
- [00:07:14.994]site that talks a bit more about the Husker payment plan.
- [00:07:19.360]So disbursement dates.
- [00:07:21.360]Now you have been awarded financial aid and or
- [00:07:24.838]scholarships.
- [00:07:26.160]So one of the most common questions we see is when will
- [00:07:29.425]this be dispersed towards that bill that I see in my account.
- [00:07:33.520]So the first round of financial aid and scholarship disbursement
- [00:07:37.530]will occur one week prior to the start of the semester and 1st.
- [00:07:41.520]All financial aid and scholarships will pay toward
- [00:07:44.652]direct expenses such as tuition fees, housing, and meals that
- [00:07:48.461]are on your bill in my red.
- [00:07:50.680]If the dispersed amount of financial aid or scholarships
- [00:07:54.216]exceeds the billed amount, a refund would then be sent to the
- [00:07:58.063]student.
- [00:07:59.200]So it's very important that you enroll in direct deposit in your
- [00:08:03.818]Myred so that way you receive that refund in the most secure
- [00:08:08.152]and quickest way possible.
- [00:08:10.280]If not, we will send that to you via check in the mail and it
- [00:08:15.661]takes a lot longer for you to get it.
- [00:08:19.280]So especially for folks that plan to use a refund for books
- [00:08:22.633]or living expenses or anything, please, please please sign up
- [00:08:26.098]for that direct deposit.
- [00:08:29.400]So next, some common mistakes that we see might prevent that
- [00:08:33.331]aid to disperse towards that.
- [00:08:35.200]Bill #1 is not filing your FAFSA.
- [00:08:39.040]I know this year has been a little wonky with how this new
- [00:08:42.848]FAFSA rolled out and there's been delays.
- [00:08:45.560]If that has kept you from filing your FAFSA, please, please
- [00:08:48.946]please do so.
- [00:08:49.880]And just know that the priority deadline for Nebraska Promise
- [00:08:52.851]still hasn't passed at the time of filming this.
- [00:08:55.400]It is June 1st for 24, 25, so if you're watching this Predator
- [00:08:59.443]June 1st, you still have time to be able to be eligible for
- [00:09:03.293]Nebraska Promise if you meet all the eligibility criteria.
- [00:09:07.600]If you're watching this after June 1st and you have not filed
- [00:09:11.056]your FAFSA, don't let that stop you.
- [00:09:13.120]You can still file after this deadline and you still can
- [00:09:16.718]absolutely be eligible for Gift Aid such as Pell Grants or other
- [00:09:20.822]institutional grants, so it's still absolutely worth your
- [00:09:24.484]time.
- [00:09:25.160]If you have not started the FAFSA, you can scan this QR code
- [00:09:29.106]here to get to studentaid.gov and if you need any sort of help
- [00:09:33.181]with that FAFSA, we are here for you.
- [00:09:35.640]We are happy to help you through that process.
- [00:09:38.920]Another very common mistake.
- [00:09:40.240]We see our students not realizing there are enrollment
- [00:09:42.914]requirements either for their scholarship or for the financial
- [00:09:45.978]aid they've received.
- [00:09:47.280]So it's really important that you check requirements for a
- [00:09:50.511]minimum credit hours needed for disbursement and of course for
- [00:09:53.961]renewal.
- [00:09:54.680]So for most federal and state aid, they require at least 12
- [00:09:58.437]credit hours in order to disperse and just know that
- [00:10:01.756]there are some scholarships that require 15 in order to disperse
- [00:10:05.827]for the full amount.
- [00:10:07.280]So if you were unsure what those enrollment requirements are,
- [00:10:10.437]please absolutely reach out to us once you enroll in classes so
- [00:10:13.697]we can ensure that you will not have a delay.
- [00:10:17.280]And finally missing my red checklist.
- [00:10:19.800]This is absolutely the most common, which is that if you
- [00:10:23.618]have checklist items under your financial aid tab in my red that
- [00:10:27.971]have not been completed, this could absolutely either prevent
- [00:10:32.124]you from receiving a financial aid award or having that
- [00:10:35.875]financial aid award disperse to pay towards your bill.
- [00:10:39.760]So definitely keep checking that my red tab as well as checking
- [00:10:43.236]your e-mail for notifications from us letting you know if you
- [00:10:46.604]are missing any items.
- [00:10:49.080]So when it comes to missing checklist, one of the most
- [00:10:52.738]common is for Federal student loans.
- [00:10:55.200]If you plan to accept a loan, just know that if this is your
- [00:10:59.015]first time accepting a federal student loan, there are two
- [00:11:02.706]checklist items you have to complete in order for these to
- [00:11:06.397]disperse.
- [00:11:07.280]They are called Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory
- [00:11:10.594]Note.
- [00:11:11.440]You will complete both of these on studentaid.gov which is the
- [00:11:15.338]same website that you went to to complete your FAFSA.
- [00:11:19.160]As you can see you'll go to this Loan and Grant tab and you'll
- [00:11:22.553]find the Master Promissory Note and Loan Entrance Counseling
- [00:11:25.839]under this Get a loan tab.
- [00:11:27.720]I would say to budget about 45 minutes to be able to complete
- [00:11:31.635]both and they will be sent to us electronically once you complete
- [00:11:35.804]them.
- [00:11:37.480]For parents, if you're planning to have a parent plus loan to
- [00:11:41.099]help your student with their education expenses when the
- [00:11:44.427]common mistakes we see are parents not knowing that they
- [00:11:47.755]actually have to complete a separate application for this.
- [00:11:51.560]So to borrow a Parent PLUS loan, you one have to complete the
- [00:11:55.328]Parent Plus loan application which is in that same tab on
- [00:11:58.854]studentaid.gov under Get a loan.
- [00:12:01.000]But you'll see it right here.
- [00:12:02.440]This Parent Plus loan and you also will need to sign your own
- [00:12:05.993]master promissory note right here.
- [00:12:09.240]The parent PLUS loan does require a credit check, so just
- [00:12:12.908]be aware that the approval of the PLUS loan is not guaranteed
- [00:12:16.829]as it is for a student loan.
- [00:12:19.600]Both are completed on studentaid.gov like I said.
- [00:12:22.960]And now we actually do have the option for parents to sign up
- [00:12:26.096]for direct deposit so they can receive any refunds from loans
- [00:12:29.233]in their name if they wish.
- [00:12:31.000]And you actually can follow the steps for that through this
- [00:12:34.321]process or reach out to us and we can help you with that as
- [00:12:37.643]well.
- [00:12:40.120]So how to keep your support system in the know?
- [00:12:44.240]So all official UNL communications are going to be
- [00:12:47.777]sent to a students Huskers e-mail address.
- [00:12:51.080]And so keeping that in mind, in order for a parent or a guardian
- [00:12:55.963]or somebody who's close to you to be aware of some of these
- [00:13:00.470]major communications, the student will have to go and
- [00:13:04.527]grant them access.
- [00:13:06.160]So parents or other supports can be granted guest access and
- [00:13:09.700]authorized payer access through the students myread account.
- [00:13:13.600]This will allow for for these folks to have permission to hear
- [00:13:17.285]information regarding a student's account and or make
- [00:13:20.444]direct payments to their bill.
- [00:13:22.560]So for students watching this, if you want to give your parents
- [00:13:27.182]access to hear about financial aid and billing, but you're like
- [00:13:31.805]like, I'm going to keep grades to myself, I want to see how I
- [00:13:36.284]do, that's fine.
- [00:13:37.480]You can actually go in and select for what information you
- [00:13:40.450]want us to have permission to share and what information you'd
- [00:13:43.622]like to keep to yourself to share in your own time.
- [00:13:46.560]So it's not an all or nothing type of thing.
- [00:13:49.320]When you go into my red, you can choose what you would like to
- [00:13:52.924]share with these folks.
- [00:13:55.040]For authorized payer, just know that even though you're an
- [00:13:57.864]authorized payer, you will still not receive the bill
- [00:14:00.449]notifications.
- [00:14:01.440]Those will be sent to the student only.
- [00:14:04.040]So definitely keep in mind that 25th dates for knowing that
- [00:14:07.717]that's when bills are made available each month.
- [00:14:10.760]If you log into that payment portal you will see any amount
- [00:14:14.430]that is due at that time.
- [00:14:18.160]So like I said granting guest access, you will go into your My
- [00:14:21.571]Red as the Student.
- [00:14:22.880]Under the Profile tab you'll see this Manage Guest Users.
- [00:14:26.200]You can add, delete and edit these at any time as you are
- [00:14:30.550]here at UNL for inviting an authorized payer in your payment
- [00:14:35.125]portal to if you've never invited anyone before.
- [00:14:39.080]When you go into that payment portal you will see this Do you
- [00:14:41.936]want help paying?
- [00:14:42.720]Send a payer invitation.
- [00:14:44.600]You will put the person's information in that you want to
- [00:14:47.513]receive the e-mail and they follow the steps from there to
- [00:14:50.476]be able to log into the payment portal and make a payment.
- [00:14:54.080]Just make sure you keep that e-mail as the as the payer
- [00:14:57.910]invitee so that way you can continue to access this payment
- [00:15:02.015]portal in an easy way.
- [00:15:05.440]So resources.
- [00:15:07.120]This is a big thing if just say you cannot get to us during our
- [00:15:11.085]office hours or else you want to see if you can navigate on your
- [00:15:15.112]own.
- [00:15:15.560]We do have a Husker Hub Explain series that does go through a
- [00:15:18.907]lot of our Frequently Asked Questions and especially those
- [00:15:22.092]questions that might have multiple steps.
- [00:15:24.600]So if you go to the Husker Hub Explains resource, you will see
- [00:15:28.447]a list of videos that cover a variety of topics that we see
- [00:15:32.112]students either struggle to get through or just like to have
- [00:15:35.838]some extra help to make sure they complete it correctly.
- [00:15:40.720]And finally, the best resource for you for any of these topics
- [00:15:43.816]is us at Husker Hub.
