[00:00:47.090]for a successful first semester.

[00:00:57.680]Engineering, Student Services, or ESS is a team of professional
[00:01:01.582]staff who work just for the College of Engineering to serve
[00:01:05.240]and support our undergraduate students.
[00:01:08.480]I'm not going to introduce you to every individual, but instead
[00:01:12.640]I want to talk about what services we provide advising.
[00:01:16.920]Some of you may have already connected with your advisor to
[00:01:19.670]discuss your fall enrollment.
[00:01:21.520]Your advisors will continue this work throughout your time with
[00:01:24.473]the College of Engineering.
[00:01:26.400]Advisors help with course scheduling and long term
[00:01:29.907]planning, adding minors and getting you connected to
[00:01:33.552]resources.
[00:01:35.600]Whatever your goals are, we are here to help you balance
[00:01:39.326]classes, involvement, work, and personal life.
[00:01:43.000]We also help oversee Nebraska Engineering Support and
[00:01:46.841]Tutoring, also known as NEST, which is our peer tutoring
[00:01:50.896]service for math, science, and the first two years of
[00:01:54.737]engineering courses.
[00:01:56.760]Student Development and Career Services.
[00:01:59.640]Student Development has two parts, Engineering, Career
[00:02:03.185]Services and Student Programs.
[00:02:05.480]Engineering.
[00:02:06.000]Career services can meet with you to prepare for a successful
[00:02:09.449]job or internship search, connect to you with employers,
[00:02:12.620]and they're also the ones who put on our career fairs.
[00:02:16.360]The student program staff helps greet you at our front desks and
[00:02:20.774]they put on events such as the new student Welcome for our
[00:02:24.782]College Scholar programs.
[00:02:26.840]This team leads some of the major leadership and scholarship
[00:02:30.371]programs you might have heard about, such as the Cuet Scholars
[00:02:34.018]and the Peter Cuet Foundation Engineering Academy Recruitment
[00:02:37.607]and Outreach.
[00:02:38.640]This is the team that helps us let young future engineers know
[00:02:42.574]that Nebraska's College of Engineering is a great place for
[00:02:46.320]their education.
[00:02:48.120]You may have had a tour from this team or their Dean's
[00:02:51.131]leaders if you came to visit.
[00:02:53.480]This team also conducts outreach, which is focused on
[00:02:56.640]educating K through 12 youth of Nebraska about what engineering
[00:03:00.387]is and the many things that engineers can do.
[00:03:04.680]So there are a lot of resources in ESS and we hope that you'll
[00:03:08.832]come visit us frequently.
[00:03:10.880]If you have a question and you're not sure where to start,
[00:03:14.133]ESS is really your one stop to get support.
[00:03:16.920]Something we're really proud of in the College of Engineering is
[00:03:19.937]the complete engineer, and I wanted to make sure we talk
[00:03:22.583]about it today.
[00:03:23.920]The complete engineer is a framework we use for our courses
[00:03:27.827]and outside the classroom activities in the college.
[00:03:31.720]The reason it exists is because we want our students to get a
[00:03:35.573]very strong technical foundation through their curriculum and
[00:03:39.426]activities alongside our incredible faculty and we want
[00:03:42.907]to develop engineers who have additional non-technical skills
[00:03:46.760]that we know are so important to be great engineers now and in
[00:03:50.676]the future.
[00:03:52.560]Whether you want to work in industry or go to graduate or
[00:03:55.781]professional school, this framework is available to all of
[00:03:59.057]you.
[00:04:00.000]We've created this framework to help you strive and grow in each
[00:04:03.826]of these six areas we call competencies.
[00:04:06.880]When you get to campus this fall, these competencies are
[00:04:10.447]going to be everywhere you look in our college posters, in your
[00:04:14.453]classes, in your student organizations and more.
[00:04:17.800]The complete engineer is a core part of who we are at Nebraska
[00:04:21.664]Engineering.
[00:04:23.080]Let's look at these six competencies and how we see them
[00:04:27.339]at Nebraska Inclusive Excellence.
[00:04:30.280]It's critically important that we learn how to work across our
[00:04:33.418]differences and embrace those differences.
[00:04:35.560]As we know, diversity, inclusion, and equity allow us
[00:04:39.003]to develop more creative solutions and solve big problems
[00:04:42.701]that impact everyone.
[00:04:45.200]Communication This one sounds obvious.
[00:04:48.120]As engineers, you'll never be working just by yourself.
[00:04:51.400]You'll work on building skills to help communicate complex
[00:04:54.431]technical things to folks from all sorts of backgrounds.
[00:04:57.960]You'll learn how to share ideas and information respectfully,
[00:05:01.457]and we'll find that building relationships will help you
[00:05:04.673]succeed in many ways as a student and as an engineer.
[00:05:08.560]Teamwork.
[00:05:09.440]This goes beyond group work.
[00:05:11.400]Most engineering problems can't be solved by one person alone,
[00:05:14.931]and teams will be part of your classroom experience,
[00:05:17.901]internships or research work and your career.
[00:05:20.480]No matter what you go on to do, self management and leadership,
[00:05:24.310]we have to learn to manage ourselves before we can know how
[00:05:27.902]to lead others.
[00:05:29.320]Yes, this includes time management, but you should work
[00:05:32.182]to be accountable for yourself and be thinking about those
[00:05:35.197]around you.
[00:05:36.400]To be a future leader in engineering, you'll need to
[00:05:39.699]learn to take initiative, be empathetic, be open and be
[00:05:43.185]organized, and move towards shared goals.
[00:05:46.240]Civic responsibility.
[00:05:48.560]Engineering is truly a service profession.
[00:05:51.560]You'll have a chance to make a positive impact on the world,
[00:05:54.699]whether you're designing bridges people drive over or working on
[00:05:58.044]computer chips for the next big tech device.
[00:06:00.560]You'll learn to keep an eye toward how your work as an
[00:06:03.323]engineer impacts the community around you as well as society at
[00:06:06.538]large.
[00:06:07.280]Professionalism and Ethics It's really important to every person
[00:06:11.083]that the people who are designing those bridges and
[00:06:14.125]devices have integrity and act with professionalism and ethics
[00:06:17.811]in mind.
[00:06:19.000]Engineers work to improve the health, safety, and welfare of
[00:06:22.616]society, so you'll be trusted to build responsibly and understand
[00:06:26.530]principles of ethics related to your work.
[00:06:29.600]It's a big role to be an engineer.
[00:06:31.880]We want all of our students to actively engage in growth in
[00:06:35.044]each of these six competencies.
[00:06:36.680]As engineer students, you can learn more on our website and
[00:06:39.876]we'll be telling you more in your first year seminars about
[00:06:43.072]how to get involved and how to make steps in your development
[00:06:46.374]as a complete engineer.
[00:06:48.760]Anna Yeley, who works at CUA in Omaha, shares that she feels
[00:06:52.826]this program helps develop the leaders that the engineering
[00:06:56.826]field needs now and in the future.
[00:07:00.000]John, who visits us annually from Austin where he works for
[00:07:03.931]NI, formerly known as National Instruments, always asks us when
[00:07:08.125]he visits, what he can do to meet with students who are
[00:07:11.795]active in building the complete engineer competencies.
[00:07:15.960]He's given talks to our students before about the importance of
[00:07:19.679]these skills, and as he shared here, he actively recruits our
[00:07:23.282]students who are engaged with this program.
[00:07:26.520]Our hope is that you choose to dig into these competencies, go
[00:07:30.058]deep, and work hard to build these skills up inside and
[00:07:33.204]outside the classroom.
[00:07:36.920]There are many things that might help you transition through the
[00:07:40.254]first year smoothly.
[00:07:42.160]Nebraska Engineering Support and Tutoring, also known as Nest, is
[00:07:46.454]a free tutoring service for engineering students located in
[00:07:50.358]the engineering college.
[00:07:52.480]It's just a great place to study if you want to drop by and have
[00:07:56.210]some space to focus, maybe ask a question or two.
[00:07:59.080]If you're stumped on your homework, you can get support
[00:08:02.594]for most 1st and 2nd year courses that our students take,
[00:08:06.235]like Math, chemistry, physics, and some of the common
[00:08:09.624]engineering courses.
[00:08:11.680]Lots of students use NEST, so there's no shame in asking for
[00:08:14.862]help or just going to check your understanding of a concept with
[00:08:18.253]the tutor who took that class too.
[00:08:21.560]Depending on your major, you'll be in Engineering 10, which is
[00:08:25.970]the Engineering 1st year seminar, or Computer Science 10,
[00:08:30.030]which is for our Computer engineering, Software
[00:08:33.390]Engineering, or Computer science students.
[00:08:36.480]Engineering 10 is a great class if you're still thinking about a
[00:08:39.306]couple of different majors.
[00:08:40.800]You'll learn more about the complete engineer careers in
[00:08:44.009]engineering, construction and computing, how to be successful,
[00:08:47.557]and strategies to help you continue forward in your major.
[00:08:51.160]Whichever class you take, you'll learn a lot and make great
[00:08:53.906]connections to other students.
[00:08:55.360]There are a lot of other offices on campus in addition to ESS
[00:08:58.489]that are here to help ensure a successful transition to
[00:09:01.316]college.
[00:09:01.840]Many offices will offer success workshops with topics like
[00:09:05.660]motivation, note taking, test prep, and stress management.
[00:09:10.240]There are also several other tutoring resources and resource
[00:09:13.120]centers around campus for you to choose to get support from.
[00:09:16.480]All colleges on campus have an academic navigator who's here
[00:09:19.605]just to make sure new students are getting the help they need
[00:09:22.782]in the College of Engineering.
[00:09:24.600]The Navigator's me.
[00:09:26.600]You might contact me when you need help, but you don't know
[00:09:29.670]who to ask or where to go If you're struggling and you need
[00:09:32.740]help figuring out where to start.
[00:09:35.080]I also do outreach to students.
[00:09:36.880]For example, I contact students who don't register for classes
[00:09:40.308]next semester to remind them it's not too late.
[00:09:43.160]I'm looking forward to working with you this fall.
[00:09:45.240]Next up, we're going to talk about some ways to get involved.
[00:09:47.920]Hopefully you've heard someone say you should get involved.
[00:09:51.280]What they mean by that is find a student organization or another
[00:09:55.450]group that helps you feel connected, make friends, find a
[00:09:59.171]support network, and more.
[00:10:01.240]Getting involved means you're likely building some of the
[00:10:04.055]complete engineer competencies.
[00:10:06.040]We have about 50 student organizations just for
[00:10:09.100]engineering students.
[00:10:10.440]There's no shortage of ways for you to make friends and connect
[00:10:13.320]with your peers.
[00:10:14.560]We have student organizations based on identity, on your
[00:10:17.985]discipline, on academic achievement, on service to the
[00:10:21.291]community, and even a student Advisory Board who meets with
[00:10:24.898]the Dean regularly.
[00:10:26.280]In the fall, we'll be helping our student organizations put on
[00:10:29.893]a big event called Rock the Block, which is our student
[00:10:33.104]organization fair just for engineering groups.
[00:10:36.520]Anyone's welcome, so bring your roommate.
[00:10:38.920]No matter what their major is.
[00:10:40.400]You can meet many of the student organizations, get on their
[00:10:43.690]e-mail list, and learn more about what they do.
[00:10:47.000]We usually have food and games at this outdoor event.
[00:10:50.200]You'll be hearing about it during the first week of
[00:10:52.501]classes, so stay tuned.
[00:10:53.920]Beyond engineering, UNL offers student involvement of all types
[00:10:58.075]for anyone like fraternity and sorority life, intramural
[00:11:01.776]sports, and so much more.
[00:11:03.920]In addition to student works, some of you might be in a
[00:11:06.792]learning community or another engineering program that you
[00:11:09.818]might have applied to as a prospective student.
[00:11:13.000]These also provide a good support network and resources to
[00:11:15.990]get you connected right off the bat and just have a lot of fun
[00:11:19.183]together.
[00:11:20.280]With so much going on, here's our best advice.
[00:11:23.200]We encourage all students to get involved in at least one thing.
[00:11:28.040]Again, this will provide you with a social group, a study
[00:11:31.426]group, and a support network.
[00:11:33.440]It's really important to your success to have folks around you
[00:11:36.777]in college.
[00:11:37.440]Also, it's really important that you check your student e-mail.
[00:11:41.360]You're going to be sent opportunities to get involved
[00:11:43.835]and we don't want you to miss out.
[00:11:46.040]We have a big goal in the College of Engineering that
[00:11:48.833]every one of our students should complete at least two different
[00:11:52.196]types of experiential learning, which basically means hands on
[00:11:55.455]learning and applying what you've learned in the classroom.
[00:11:59.240]The three types you have to choose from are internships or
[00:12:03.276]going on a Co-op.
[00:12:05.240]While only a few of our programs require an internship, all
[00:12:09.070]engineering, construction, and computer science students should
[00:12:13.156]plan on at least one internship.
[00:12:15.760]Industry expects that you'll have at least one before you
[00:12:18.876]graduate.
[00:12:19.800]You can get paid for an internship in engineering
[00:12:22.899]undergraduate research, get paid to work in a lab and gain great
[00:12:26.928]experience, especially if you want to go into research, become
[00:12:30.833]a professor, or go to Med school or some other professional
[00:12:34.552]school education abroad.
[00:12:36.400]There are so many different ways to make education abroad
[00:12:39.392]affordable and accessible, taking classes that count
[00:12:42.127]towards your degree.
[00:12:43.280]Students interested in studying abroad should work with the
[00:12:46.265]Education Abroad Office early in their time with us to make a
[00:12:49.351]plan.
[00:12:49.960]As an engineering student, the Engineering Career Services team
[00:12:53.444]is your dedicated career coaching resource.
[00:12:56.200]You'll have a coach who can help you Polish your resume, get you
[00:12:59.532]prepped for career fairs, and provide workshops on building
[00:13:02.609]key professional skills.
[00:13:04.000]It's tricky to navigate, so we offer a wide range of support.
[00:13:08.360]Most of our students are required to take an engineering
[00:13:11.831]career development seminar, Engineering 20, which you can
[00:13:15.362]take as early as this spring to help you prepare your
[00:13:18.651]application materials and networking skills ahead of
[00:13:21.878]career fairs and other application processes.
[00:13:24.920]All right, here are several tips for you around common challenges
[00:13:28.727]we see among our first year students.
[00:13:31.240]Keep in mind your academic advisor.
[00:13:33.240]They're more than just planning classes.
[00:13:35.520]You can get lots of other support.
[00:13:37.280]You can book appointments with your advisor online at any time.
[00:13:40.960]Once you get here in the fall, we want to help you stay on
[00:13:44.235]track, work through challenges, and get connected to resources
[00:13:47.732]and activities on campus.
[00:13:50.120]Faculty, instructors, and Tasmania are also wonderful
[00:13:54.575]resources.
[00:13:55.800]They care deeply about your success.
[00:13:58.440]One tip we recommend is you start connecting with each of
[00:14:01.673]your instructors during the first week of classes, The
[00:14:04.740]earlier the better.
[00:14:06.400]You can always visit their office hours, Teaching
[00:14:09.592]assistants or Tasmania, whether they are graduate students or
[00:14:13.552]undergrad, TAS are in some classes to support you as well.
[00:14:17.800]We encourage you to reach out to an academic advisor or
[00:14:20.912]instructor early if you're having any kind of challenge.
[00:14:24.720]We also want you to ask questions.
[00:14:27.400]It helps us help you.
[00:14:29.760]Another tip is to form your own study group.
[00:14:32.480]Find friends in your classes, student orgs, or your learning
[00:14:36.128]community, and find time to focus together.
[00:14:39.440]Nest is a good place to start if you don't know many other
[00:14:42.703]students in your classes just yet.
[00:14:46.120]Lastly, time management.
[00:14:48.320]Now is a good time to be thinking about how you're going
[00:14:51.029]to keep track of everything you're balancing before you get
[00:14:53.882]here.
[00:14:54.440]College is very different than high school, and there's too
[00:14:57.731]much going on to try to remember everything.
[00:15:00.640]Find a system that works for you, your phone's reminders or
[00:15:04.527]calendar app, your calendar that goes with your Huskers e-mail or
[00:15:08.803]your canvas, a paper planner if you like to get fancy, a monthly
[00:15:13.014]overview calendar for your desk, etcetera.
[00:15:16.160]Whatever works for you, but it's really important that you try
[00:15:19.438]something and evaluate if it's working.
[00:15:22.080]We find this is one of the biggest challenges our students
[00:15:25.169]face, so prepare now so you're ready for the fall.
