- [00:00:04.578]new student Enrollment College session.
- [00:00:07.040]My name is Tony Lazarovich and I am the Director of Academic
- [00:00:10.109]Advising for the college, and my name is Megan Savage, and I'm
- [00:00:13.279]the Associate Director for Career Development here in the
- [00:00:16.197]college.
- [00:00:18.000]We're excited to have you with us and look forward to spending
- [00:00:21.188]a little bit of time with you here virtually to talk about
- [00:00:24.174]some of the important things that you need to be aware of.
- [00:00:27.160]And do you get ready to transition to your time here at
- [00:00:30.155]the University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:32.160]We're all excited to work with you.
- [00:00:33.680]We're excited that you've chosen to be part of our college and
- [00:00:36.927]the university because we really believe in what you're going to
- [00:00:40.277]be experiencing here.
- [00:00:41.360]In the time that you're a student with us, you're going to
- [00:00:44.238]be able to really study things that you're really curious about
- [00:00:47.361]and you want to get interested and involved in and learn more
- [00:00:50.387]about.
- [00:00:50.680]And we want to be part of that journey with you.
- [00:00:53.080]And in order to help you do that, we're going to help craft
- [00:00:56.655]a graduation plan that is going to be flexible and customized to
- [00:01:00.528]your individual needs.
- [00:01:02.040]Whether that as a transfer student is your two year plan or
- [00:01:05.387]as a first time freshman looking at a four year plan.
- [00:01:08.760]We're going to customize your plan to meet what you're looking
- [00:01:11.588]for in your own experience.
- [00:01:12.800]So no two students are going to have the exact same pathway
- [00:01:15.918]between the time that you start here and the time that you
- [00:01:18.984]graduate while you're in our college.
- [00:01:20.960]What we're going to do is help you to try to explore your
- [00:01:23.689]interests.
- [00:01:24.160]What are those things that you really want to learn more about?
- [00:01:27.640]What are the abilities that you want to really kind of focus in
- [00:01:31.009]on and craft and develop further?
- [00:01:33.280]What are those values that you have, and how do all those
- [00:01:36.994]really come together into the world of work and lead you to a
- [00:01:40.965]wide range of career options when you graduate?
- [00:01:44.040]So again, what do you like?
- [00:01:45.240]What are you good at?
- [00:01:46.120]What are things that are important to you and and
- [00:01:48.743]throughout the whole time that you're here, we're going to be
- [00:01:51.995]really stressing the importance of building those skills that
- [00:01:55.248]are really valuable in the workplace and currently while
- [00:01:58.239]you're in college, not just in the classroom but the outside of
- [00:02:01.596]the classroom experience as well that they're going to set you up
- [00:02:05.059]for those top notch opportunities after you
- [00:02:07.367]graduate.
- [00:02:09.720]New student enrollment consists of two processes, orientation.
- [00:02:14.200]For those that view that were able to attend orientation in
- [00:02:17.130]person, you've experienced a chance to see campus meet other
- [00:02:20.109]students and get some of those questions answered.
- [00:02:22.800]For the online orientation, you're learning through some of
- [00:02:26.290]the content through modules.
- [00:02:28.000]And then the other portion of this is your advising and
- [00:02:30.870]registration, and that's where you'll meet with your academic
- [00:02:34.048]advisor either on zoom or in person for an hour.
- [00:02:36.800]And you'll beginning to develop that relationship with your
- [00:02:39.546]advisor because you're planning out your first semester courses,
- [00:02:42.521]talking about any of the questions that you have As you
- [00:02:45.084]get prepared to start here.
- [00:02:46.640]And by the time you're done with that advising meeting, you will
- [00:02:50.238]have had all of your enrollment for your upcoming semester.
- [00:02:54.080]It doesn't make a difference which of those two steps you
- [00:02:56.736]start with.
- [00:02:57.240]You're going to have the same experience regardless of whether
- [00:03:01.009]you start with orientation first or the advising first.
- [00:03:05.080]So for the rest of this session today, we're going to talk about
- [00:03:07.836]degree planning, the overall degree requirements within our
- [00:03:10.380]college.
- [00:03:10.920]We're going to talk a little bit about academic advising, who
- [00:03:13.909]your advisor is and how they're going to be able to work with
- [00:03:16.899]you while you're here.
- [00:03:18.200]Megan's going to speak a little bit about career coaching and
- [00:03:21.208]the ways that you're going to gain experience in your time.
- [00:03:24.400]And then we'll finish by talking about some of the success tools,
- [00:03:27.403]the the team that you'll have around you to make sure that
- [00:03:30.088]you're successful and the resources that you'll have while
- [00:03:32.773]you're here.
- [00:03:38.040]OK.
- [00:03:38.480]So to tell you a little bit more about the College of Arts and
- [00:03:41.989]Sciences, we are the most academically diverse college
- [00:03:45.052]here at the university, with 30 majors and over 50 different
- [00:03:48.450]minors.
- [00:03:49.160]Everything that you can imagine from English to physics,
- [00:03:52.402]psychology, history, biochemistry and so much more.
- [00:03:55.680]And even though all of those majors sound really different
- [00:03:59.083]from one another, the thing that connects all of us across so
- [00:04:02.660]many different areas is curiosity.
- [00:04:04.920]Students choose our majors and minors because they are
- [00:04:07.800]genuinely curious about them.
- [00:04:09.480]They want to dive in, learn as much as they can, and really
- [00:04:12.355]start to become experts in those fields.
- [00:04:14.840]The College of Arts and Sciences offers countless ways to explore
- [00:04:18.390]your curiosity, both in and out of the classroom.
- [00:04:21.440]It's our hope that you will take advantage of those opportunities
- [00:04:24.548]and let your curiosity move you because you never know where
- [00:04:27.420]you'll end up.
- [00:04:32.600]And of course, your college education isn't just about your
- [00:04:36.044]major or your coursework.
- [00:04:37.880]I regularly connect with employers who frequently tell me
- [00:04:41.395]that what they're looking for in college students and new college
- [00:04:45.396]grads are the people who performed well academically and
- [00:04:48.852]gained meaningful career related experience through opportunities
- [00:04:52.853]such as internships, research education abroad, significant
- [00:04:56.490]community service, and campus leadership roles.
- [00:04:59.680]It's truly a combination of your academics and experience that
- [00:05:03.083]will open up countless opportunities for you after you
- [00:05:06.054]graduate, and we focus intently on supporting you with both of
- [00:05:09.457]those things.
- [00:05:10.160]Here in the college degree that you earn from the College of
- [00:05:14.909]Arts and Sciences is characterized by two key things,
- [00:05:19.114]focus and range.
- [00:05:20.640]Your education is focused in that you will have the
- [00:05:23.240]opportunity to dive deeply into your major and learn as much as
- [00:05:26.440]you can.
- [00:05:27.200]You will also have the opportunity to take a range of
- [00:05:30.021]courses in a wide variety of subject areas.
- [00:05:32.680]And this is important because the focus and the range work
- [00:05:36.120]together to create a broad, well-rounded education that
- [00:05:39.385]equips you with essential skills for your long term personal and
- [00:05:43.175]professional success.
- [00:05:44.720]Skills such as being able to communicate clearly, collaborate
- [00:05:48.356]with people who are different than you, and examine complex
- [00:05:51.875]problems from a variety of perspectives.
- [00:05:54.640]All of this and more is built into the degree that you're
- [00:05:57.458]earning in the College of Arts and Sciences, and this is what
- [00:06:00.470]we consider to be the value of a liberal arts education.
- [00:06:04.360]Art majors in the college are broken down into these main
- [00:06:07.608]groups.
- [00:06:08.280]First, the humanities.
- [00:06:09.640]These are students that like to examine history, memory,
- [00:06:13.094]imagination, and how we tell our stories.
- [00:06:16.200]Popular majors here, our English history and our modern
- [00:06:20.373]languages, The social sciences are the students who like asking
- [00:06:25.142]why we are the way we are.
- [00:06:27.360]Why do we think, behave and communicate the way that we do,
- [00:06:30.129]and how is all that influenced.
- [00:06:31.760]Popular majors here are psychology, political science
- [00:06:34.298]and communication studies.
- [00:06:36.480]We also have the sciences.
- [00:06:38.040]These are students that like to break things down and put them
- [00:06:41.084]back together and use the scientific method to solve
- [00:06:43.645]problems.
- [00:06:44.440]Popular majors here are Biological Sciences, chemistry,
- [00:06:47.748]and math.
- [00:06:49.040]We also have the interdisciplinary studies.
- [00:06:52.200]So those are majors that study a particular topic or region or
- [00:06:56.605]particular issue from within these three disciplines here on
- [00:07:00.870]the screen.
- [00:07:04.520]So one thing that brings academics and the experience
- [00:07:07.920]together is the important concept of degree planning.
- [00:07:11.600]For us, it's an intentional process that we want you to
- [00:07:14.381]engage in, bringing together the academics and experience to
- [00:07:17.411]really situate you for those wide range of opportunities that
- [00:07:20.490]you will have when you graduate.
- [00:07:22.400]We want you to be planful.
- [00:07:24.280]We want you to be thinking about the classes that you want to
- [00:07:27.017]take, the experience that you want to gain.
- [00:07:28.960]But at the same time, with many plans in life, things are going
- [00:07:32.467]to happen along the way that are going to influence your plan.
- [00:07:36.400]You're gonna have an experience that maybe takes you into a new
- [00:07:39.640]direction with a new minor or maybe an opportunity to
- [00:07:42.374]participate in a experience that you hadn't thought you would
- [00:07:45.513]maybe participate in while you were here.
- [00:07:48.880]Maybe there's a faculty member that invites you to join a
- [00:07:51.441]research project that changes your mind about what kind of a
- [00:07:54.136]career path you see yourself wanting to do.
- [00:07:56.080]So there is no doubt that our plans are going to change.
- [00:07:59.080]And so for us, when we talk about degree planning, we want
- [00:08:02.283]to make sure that our students are being influenced by these
- [00:08:05.595]courses and experience that you have and how that helps you meet
- [00:08:09.125]those goals, but in a plan full, intentional way.
- [00:08:11.840]So you're going to be meeting with your academic advisors and
- [00:08:14.895]the career coaches both simultaneously to do degree
- [00:08:17.458]planning, where you're advisor is going to focus on the
- [00:08:20.218]academic requirements, your course sequencing, the critical
- [00:08:23.175]requirements and moments that you need throughout the course
- [00:08:26.182]of time to keep you on track for graduating.
- [00:08:28.520]They're going to help you think broadly about the experience
- [00:08:31.413]when it makes sense to incorporate those experiences
- [00:08:33.927]within your degree and engaging in those.
- [00:08:36.560]And meanwhile, the career coaches will then help you
- [00:08:39.659]really identify specific opportunities within those
- [00:08:42.700]experiences along your way.
- [00:08:44.280]And again, we want to revise and review each semester, which is
- [00:08:48.001]the importance of that iterative process that degree planning is.
- [00:08:53.480]And so now we're going to talk a little bit about the academics
- [00:08:56.389]portion of our equation.
- [00:08:57.480]And so to do that, we're going to start by talking about
- [00:09:00.337]academic advising.
- [00:09:01.960]Your academic advisor is one of the most important relationships
- [00:09:04.946]and most important people that you're going to have in your
- [00:09:07.703]time at the university.
- [00:09:09.000]This person is going to be really dedicated to your overall
- [00:09:12.035]success.
- [00:09:12.440]Not just academics, but academics, personal and
- [00:09:15.278]professional success.
- [00:09:16.840]You may have already met with your academic advisor in an
- [00:09:19.426]advising appointment, or you may be meeting with them later on.
- [00:09:23.080]Either way, they want to get to know you.
- [00:09:24.840]They want to get to build that relationship with you, and that
- [00:09:28.055]starts from the very first moment of meeting at new student
- [00:09:31.118]enrollment.
- [00:09:32.640]Moving forward, you will be required to meet with your
- [00:09:35.100]academic advisor each semester during your first year with us,
- [00:09:37.919]and we hope that you will continue to connect with your
- [00:09:40.424]advisor at least once each semester.
- [00:09:42.360]But you're absolutely welcome to connect with them whenever you
- [00:09:45.025]have questions, whether that's through an appointment or
- [00:09:47.398]through drop in advising.
- [00:09:49.240]They also have established relationships with the many
- [00:09:51.706]faculty and staff across both the college and then their
- [00:09:54.261]departments.
- [00:09:55.160]So as you begin to identify specific areas that maybe you
- [00:09:58.043]want to study, research that you'd like to pursue or some
- [00:10:00.926]areas within your major, they're going to know which of the
- [00:10:03.908]faculty members are going to be best to connect you with who may
- [00:10:07.139]have similar interests or experience to what you're
- [00:10:09.724]wanting to have.
- [00:10:11.720]While you do want to schedule that meeting, as I mentioned at
- [00:10:14.200]least once each semester, again I mentioned we have an
- [00:10:16.400]opportunity for dropping advising.
- [00:10:17.800]Those are really quick questions that can be answered and you
- [00:10:20.916]know a few 10 to 15 minutes and maybe that's a good opportunity
- [00:10:24.132]from a follow up meeting that you've had earlier with an
- [00:10:26.997]advisor.
- [00:10:27.400]But regardless whether you're coming for a scheduled
- [00:10:29.537]appointment or a drop in, we want to make sure that you're
- [00:10:31.917]prepared.
- [00:10:32.280]What questions do you have that you want to get answered?
- [00:10:35.280]What things are important to cover in that amount of time
- [00:10:38.018]that you have?
- [00:10:39.200]Again, they want to build a strong relationship with you,
- [00:10:41.785]help you meet your goals, and to do that, you've got to meet
- [00:10:44.505]regularly with that academic advisor.
- [00:10:46.400]They're also going to communicate regularly with you,
- [00:10:48.518]so please make sure to check your Huskers e-mail.
- [00:10:51.040]They each send out weekly communications that highlight
- [00:10:53.796]really important opportunities or experiences happening within
- [00:10:56.898]the department that you're going to want to take advantage of.
- [00:11:00.240]While you're here to transition a little bit to the overall
- [00:11:03.654]degree and the components, this Venn diagram really is a good
- [00:11:07.182]illustration of all the different requirements that you
- [00:11:10.369]will take and complete while you're here.
- [00:11:13.200]Our degree requires a minimum of 120 credit hours.
- [00:11:17.040]If you break that out, that average is 14 to 16 credit hours
- [00:11:21.095]per semester.
- [00:11:21.960]To keep you on track, we offer two different degrees, a
- [00:11:25.432]Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science.
- [00:11:28.360]Naturally, many of the majors fall into one track or the
- [00:11:31.001]other.
- [00:11:31.280]The biggest difference for a Bachelor of Science is that 60
- [00:11:34.880]hours or 1/2 of your degree will be scientific in nature.
- [00:11:39.640]The Bachelor of Arts does not have that requirement, and both
- [00:11:42.692]of the degrees have some of the same other components.
- [00:11:45.400]So the ACE, the university general education requirements,
- [00:11:48.570]the college distribution requirements, major, minor and
- [00:11:51.579]minor requirements.
- [00:11:52.600]If you choose to declare a minor, ACE requirements are
- [00:11:57.960]university wide.
- [00:11:59.920]A stands for achievement centered education and there are
- [00:12:03.897]10 outcomes.
- [00:12:05.880]One of the things that is really important about this is that we
- [00:12:09.193]actually worked with employers and developed a curriculum that
- [00:12:12.404]focuses on the knowledge, the skills and the experience that
- [00:12:15.514]employers are looking for out of a successful graduate when
- [00:12:18.572]they're looking to hire you.
- [00:12:20.000]So they fall into the knowledge, the skills and the
- [00:12:23.432]responsibilities to society.
- [00:12:25.280]And you can see on the screen we've got writing,
- [00:12:28.439]communication, math, statistics and formal reasoning, Scientific
- [00:12:32.630]methods, humanities, social sciences, visual and performing
- [00:12:36.498]arts, ethics, civics and stewardship, global awareness
- [00:12:40.044]and diversity, and then a creative or scholarly product.
- [00:12:45.080]The college has additional general education requirements
- [00:12:47.923]known as college distribution requirements.
- [00:12:50.360]These are additional courses that allow you to study a range
- [00:12:53.642]of the courses that we offer in the College in the disciplines
- [00:12:57.032]of the humanities, social sciences, and natural
- [00:12:59.616]mathematical sciences.
- [00:13:01.200]Our requirements include writing, natural science and
- [00:13:04.725]math with lab humanities, social science, world language, and
- [00:13:08.772]diversity in US communities.
- [00:13:11.680]There are many choices available to you within each of these
- [00:13:14.449]requirements.
- [00:13:15.360]They're not just a checklist, so we want you to really be
- [00:13:17.970]intentional about the classes.
- [00:13:19.320]What do you want to learn, and how will you gain the knowledge
- [00:13:22.397]of the skills in those broad categories?
- [00:13:24.640]They're meant to develop your ability to build the skills and
- [00:13:27.723]and knowledge that will enhance what you're going to learn
- [00:13:30.658]through your majors and minors.
- [00:13:32.960]Finally, all of our students are required to complete an
- [00:13:36.170]experiential learning designated course.
- [00:13:38.880]There are a variety of ways that this requirement can be met.
- [00:13:42.120]As you will hear, there are a lot of ways that this is tied
- [00:13:45.877]into the importance of our academic plus experience
- [00:13:49.133]formula, which ultimately leads you to endless opportunities
- [00:13:52.952]once you graduate.
- [00:13:54.560]And so this particular requirement will really just
- [00:13:57.074]help ensure that you've engaged in a meaningful experiential
- [00:14:00.024]learning opportunity.
- [00:14:03.280]As we go back to this Venn diagram, you can see that
- [00:14:06.142]several areas will overlap.
- [00:14:08.120]The only two requirements that don't are your age and college
- [00:14:10.769]distribution requirements.
- [00:14:12.280]But if you're planful, those requirements can overlap your
- [00:14:15.256]major and minor requirements.
- [00:14:16.720]And it's this kind of overlap that really adds the flexibility
- [00:14:20.380]to our degree and allows for many of our students the
- [00:14:23.517]opportunity to pursue a second major or multiple minors, which
- [00:14:27.177]is very common in our college.
- [00:14:29.280]So if you're already thinking about pursuing a second major or
- [00:14:32.883]other minors, make sure that you tell your advisor about those
- [00:14:36.487]interests so that we can kind of build that into your overall
- [00:14:40.033]plan.
- [00:14:40.560]And of course, many of our majors and students will also
- [00:14:43.065]have room for electives to explore areas, maybe with just
- [00:14:45.614]one or two classes in the time that you're here as well.
- [00:14:52.160]Equally as important as academics in your degree
- [00:14:54.708]planning process is gaining experience outside the
- [00:14:57.360]classroom.
- [00:14:58.360]Nebraska offers a variety of avenues to gain experience, and
- [00:15:01.463]the College of Arts and Sciences has a team to help you find the
- [00:15:04.769]best opportunities based on your own interests and goals.
- [00:15:09.680]Located in the Academic and Career Advising Center, our
- [00:15:12.546]Career Coaching Team can help you think about ways you might
- [00:15:15.668]gain experience and explore careers related to your academic
- [00:15:18.790]program.
- [00:15:19.600]We can also help you develop resumes, apply for jobs and
- [00:15:22.714]internships, prepare for interviews, and so much more.
- [00:15:26.160]I like to say that the best way to use career coaching is to
- [00:15:29.168]connect early and often so that we can continuously support you
- [00:15:32.325]and your time here at the University.
- [00:15:36.840]We encourage students to gain experience in some combination
- [00:15:40.515]of these five areas.
- [00:15:42.080]First, undergraduate research, which is getting to collaborate
- [00:15:45.583]with faculty members to create new knowledge in your field.
- [00:15:49.200]It's also a great way to prepare for advanced degrees and build
- [00:15:53.411]great relationships with those faculty members internships.
- [00:15:57.600]These are opportunities to have different types of work
- [00:16:01.025]experience in a variety of companies and organizations that
- [00:16:04.696]allow you to contribute to real projects and explore possible
- [00:16:08.489]career paths through that meaningful work.
- [00:16:13.040]Education abroad is an opportunity to live and learn in
- [00:16:16.004]another country and have a really immersive cultural
- [00:16:18.809]experience and gain a lot of great skills in the process.
- [00:16:22.200]But I would say that most of the students that I've worked with,
- [00:16:25.073]the College of Arts and Sciences, are really excited
- [00:16:27.415]about the opportunities for education abroad because they're
- [00:16:30.111]so curious about the world around them.
- [00:16:33.960]Leadership.
- [00:16:34.680]We would love for you to get started by joining student
- [00:16:37.525]organizations and then applying for formal leadership roles on
- [00:16:40.726]campus, such as like our orientation leaders, our
- [00:16:43.267]resident assistants, peer mentors, and our even our
- [00:16:45.910]college has a great team of student ambassadors.
- [00:16:48.400]There are tons of ways to grow as a leader on campus and
- [00:16:52.220]finally, service.
- [00:16:53.560]Many of you've probably had to do some amount of community
- [00:16:56.748]service as maybe a high school graduation requirement.
- [00:16:59.840]We want you to continue that commitment, A2 community service
- [00:17:03.141]here at the university as well, and connect to a particular
- [00:17:06.336]'cause that really matters to you.
- [00:17:08.520]Contribute your time and energy to supporting those
- [00:17:11.104]organizations.
- [00:17:11.960]It's a great way to gain experience, especially if you're
- [00:17:14.666]interested in careers with high impact where you get to help
- [00:17:17.513]other people.
- [00:17:24.600]We've talked a lot about a lot of things today so far, and
- [00:17:27.668]again, we really believe that academics plus experience is
- [00:17:30.737]what opens the door to high quality opportunities after you
- [00:17:33.858]graduate, and we have a great staff and faculty to help you
- [00:17:36.979]tend to both of those things simultaneously.
- [00:17:39.640]There's also a large number of other campus partners our staff
- [00:17:42.800]and faculty may connect you with in different moments.
- [00:17:45.840]We have resources in and out of the college to help you with
- [00:17:49.063]transitioning from high school to college, getting involved on
- [00:17:52.391]campus, building academic skills, and taking care of
- [00:17:55.192]yourself and your overall well-being.
- [00:17:57.440]This is a strong support network with helpful people who are
- [00:18:00.563]eager to help you succeed personally, academically, and
- [00:18:03.431]professionally.
- [00:18:09.370]One of the resources that we also have in our college are
- [00:18:12.143]known as the Academic Navigators.
- [00:18:14.010]They really work alongside our whole team, our academic
- [00:18:17.041]advisors, our career coaches and others to just make sure that
- [00:18:20.450]they're proactively connecting with you and reaching out to
- [00:18:23.698]make sure that you have access to the appropriate resources.
- [00:18:27.200]Help you to begin planful ways to develop in your academic,
- [00:18:31.453]personal, and professional career goals.
- [00:18:34.680]They're great listeners and we encourage you to connect with
- [00:18:38.077]them anytime that you've got questions or trying to identify
- [00:18:41.474]where our resource may be here on campus that could support
- [00:18:44.816]whatever the issue is that you're facing at that time.
- [00:18:51.200]We mentioned earlier that no degree or pathway is the same.
- [00:18:54.720]The one experience that every one of our new students has that
- [00:18:59.336]is the same is the CASC 050 College of Arts and Sciences Art
- [00:19:03.807]Smart course.
- [00:19:05.080]This is a zero credit course that is in your first semester.
- [00:19:09.000]It is graded.
- [00:19:10.360]I'm sorry, it's pass, no pass.
- [00:19:12.520]And it is required and it opens just before the semester begins.
- [00:19:16.480]And we intentionally offer a number of modules based on that
- [00:19:19.945]point of your first semester that are critical to that time
- [00:19:23.354]in what you need.
- [00:19:24.600]It's designed to give you a head start on your success here at
- [00:19:27.917]the university, introducing you to the resources and the tools
- [00:19:31.235]that we have.
- [00:19:32.400]It's involved in our learning management system, Canvas, so it
- [00:19:35.609]helps you to also get familiar with some of the different
- [00:19:38.564]resources that you're going to need to use in all of your other
- [00:19:41.824]classes as well.
- [00:19:42.840]So the first module will start in early August and typically
- [00:19:46.600]takes a couple of hours.
- [00:19:48.320]And then each week through the first few weeks of the semester,
- [00:19:52.052]additional content will be available to kind of follow
- [00:19:55.259]through those first six weeks of the semester.
- [00:19:58.440]We will make sure to send you an e-mail to remind you when that
- [00:20:01.764]course opens.
- [00:20:04.600]One of the last things that I want to share is a little bit
- [00:20:07.000]about our social media and the ways that you can connect with
- [00:20:09.480]us.
- [00:20:09.600]We use Facebook.
- [00:20:12.080]Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, X, all of our handles are UNLCAS.
- [00:20:18.120]And I think the important thing that you'll find as you look
- [00:20:21.429]through our different social media stories is that we really
- [00:20:24.739]like to tell the story about you as the students, about our
- [00:20:27.995]faculty and staff and our alumni.
- [00:20:29.840]And it's a great way to get inspired and see what is
- [00:20:32.753]happening by a lot of the successful students in our
- [00:20:35.666]college and those that have gone on to graduate.
- [00:20:38.600]So I encourage you all to follow in the social media platforms
- [00:20:41.895]that you you use and just be inspired by the great work
- [00:20:44.824]that's happening within our college.
- [00:20:50.440]As we wrap up, I want to leave you with this final thought that
- [00:20:53.573]you don't need to know where you will end up to get started.
- [00:20:56.880]You just chose a university and a major.
- [00:20:59.800]You don't have to know your plan for after graduation.
- [00:21:02.520]You have plenty of time and resources to figure that out.
- [00:21:05.600]We know that there are countless opportunities for the College of
- [00:21:08.577]Arts and Sciences graduates.
- [00:21:10.240]We regularly hear from our alum 5/10/15 years after they
- [00:21:13.585]graduate telling us that they never could have predicted where
- [00:21:17.283]their career would take them when they were where you are
- [00:21:20.687]today.
- [00:21:21.400]The truth is, your career path will evolve over time and be
- [00:21:24.846]heavily influenced by new experiences you have, people you
- [00:21:28.235]meet, and the things you learn about yourself and the world
- [00:21:31.681]around you and your place in it.
- [00:21:33.840]And it's already been happening.
- [00:21:35.120]Whether you realize it or not, take just a few seconds to think
- [00:21:38.263]about what you wanted to be when you were little.
- [00:21:41.440]Is that a path that you're still on?
- [00:21:43.560]Why or why not?
- [00:21:44.840]We hear a lot of fun answers to this question.
- [00:21:47.240]People wanted to be Taylor Swift, but they Can't Sing so
- [00:21:50.090]they've changed their mind.
- [00:21:51.760]You know, people really wanted to.
- [00:21:53.800]My one of my favourites is they wanted to be a on the way staff
- [00:21:56.963]at Olive Garden because they really love the breadsticks, but
- [00:22:00.028]they discovered they had bigger interests than that and that's
- [00:22:03.143]great.
- [00:22:03.840]So you can probably think of a few things from your life so far
- [00:22:07.323]where you got really excited about a particular career path,
- [00:22:10.643]but you've changed your mind for one reason or the other.
- [00:22:14.360]That's called career development, you know, your
- [00:22:17.118]interest just changed something influences you to move in a
- [00:22:20.495]different direction and that's going to continue to unfold for
- [00:22:24.041]the rest of your life.
- [00:22:25.520]So my best recommendation is to not put too much pressure on
- [00:22:29.563]yourself.
- [00:22:30.720]Follow your curiosity, rely on the great resources that you
- [00:22:34.005]have available to you, and just focus on your best next step.
- [00:22:37.880]The next part of your journey starts at NSC, and we are so
- [00:22:40.715]happy to have you joining us in the College of Arts and
- [00:22:43.407]Sciences.
- [00:22:46.440]That's right, and we know that we've shared a lot of
- [00:22:49.116]information with you today.
- [00:22:51.000]You're going to continue to receive a lot of information and
- [00:22:53.939]likely have many questions.
- [00:22:55.240]And so we just want you to know that in the academic and career
- [00:22:58.834]advising center, we are here and ready to answer any questions
- [00:23:02.373]that you have.
- [00:23:03.520]Academic advising and career coaching are coordinated through
- [00:23:06.339]our center.
- [00:23:07.000]So this is a location and old Father Hall, which is in the
- [00:23:10.146]picture on the screen, it's a place that you can go, whether
- [00:23:13.400]that's adding or changing your major or minors, any processes
- [00:23:16.706]or paperwork that you need to change, meeting with staff, it's
- [00:23:20.066]really the best place to start.
- [00:23:21.720]If you have questions, we're going to know where to get you
- [00:23:24.793]connected to the right people, the right offices, And Sir,
- [00:23:27.815]certainly if you have any questions today or after today,
- [00:23:30.786]anytime moving forward, please do use the contact information
- [00:23:33.962]on the screen.
- [00:23:35.160]We'll be sure to make sure we get those answered or connect
- [00:23:37.949]you with the people that do have the right answer.
- [00:23:40.960]And lastly, you'll notice the QR code here on this NSC resource
- [00:23:44.385]screen.
- [00:23:45.240]All of the NSC resources that have been presented throughout
- [00:23:48.002]the course of the summer are available here.
- [00:23:51.000]On behalf of the College of Arts and Sciences faculty and staff,
