- [00:09:16.280]Students who complete our degree program are often interested in
- [00:09:21.295]a wide variety of different career opportunities that might
- [00:09:25.925]be in corrections, courts and law law enforcement, victim
- [00:09:30.401]services, juvenile services, working in state or federal
- [00:09:34.799]regulatory agencies, work in private security or receive
- [00:09:39.198]advanced education and do research or teaching in
- [00:09:43.056]criminology and criminal justice.
- [00:09:51.720]Just wanted to cover degree requirements so that you would
- [00:09:55.647]have an idea of what courses you would be taking for this degree.
- [00:10:00.600]The Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice
- [00:10:04.752]includes a minimum of 120 credit hours.
- [00:10:08.120]As you see, the achievement centered education requirements
- [00:10:11.641]are integrated within our degree requirements.
- [00:10:15.200]Students specifically take 9 hours of English composition, 9
- [00:10:20.481]hours of social Science, 7 hours of natural science including one
- [00:10:26.196]natural science lab, 12 credit hours of Humanities and Fine
- [00:10:31.391]Arts to include an ACE 7 oral communication course, an ACE 5
- [00:10:36.673]Humanities and an ACE 7 Arts, and then one additional
- [00:10:41.348]Humanities or Arts course.
- [00:10:44.320]Statistics is required and fulfills our ACE 3 quantitative
- [00:10:48.408]requirement.
- [00:10:50.640]Students complete 40 hours in the Criminology and Criminal
- [00:10:54.738]Justice major, completing some ACE requirements there.
- [00:10:58.560]ACE 9 is a diversity requirement and that is completed with a
- [00:11:03.795]course in Criminal.
- [00:11:05.440]A required course in Criminal Justice.
- [00:11:08.720]Our internship can fulfill the ACE 10 or the scholarly product
- [00:11:14.225]or Capstone course and apply in the 40 hour major area.
- [00:11:19.600]Students are required to complete a minor.
- [00:11:21.560]Most minors are 18 credit hours, but a few might vary from that.
- [00:11:28.320]Additional coursework to round out the degree are done in
- [00:11:33.038]electives or courses of choice.
- [00:11:36.480]The ACE 8 is an ethics civics course, and depending on which
- [00:11:40.477]courses chosen, might apply in a variety of areas within those
- [00:11:44.605]120 credit hours.
- [00:11:51.040]There are many minors that students could consider.
- [00:11:54.920]Might choose an area to benefit career goals or just an area of
- [00:12:00.040]interest.
- [00:12:01.360]We primarily just recommend that students plan early explore
- [00:12:06.398]different areas.
- [00:12:07.720]Work with your advisor to choose one or more minors to include in
- [00:12:12.164]your program.
- [00:12:16.080]A typical first semester might include fifteen credit hours or
- [00:12:21.153]five courses.
- [00:12:24.320]For instance, an English composition for three hours, the
- [00:12:29.232]intro criminal justice, a social science course, and a couple of
- [00:12:34.737]additional courses could be in ACE requirements or areas of
- [00:12:39.818]interest or an elective or for students who are in special
- [00:12:44.815]programs might include learning community courses or or PC
- [00:12:49.812]courses, or, yeah, adjusting for whatever a student might want to
- [00:12:55.402]include.
- [00:12:56.960]If taking 15 credit hours, the recommendation is to study about
- [00:13:00.822]two hours outside of class for every hour in class.
- [00:13:03.960]So that would be like A40 hour work week devoted to academics.
- [00:13:10.800]So it's very important to plan well, use good time management,
- [00:13:16.754]use a planner, and there's resources that can help with
- [00:13:22.047]that.
- [00:13:22.520]In the Center for Academic Success and Transition, we can
- [00:13:27.809]adjust the schedule based on other credits such as AP credits
- [00:13:33.464]or dual credits or whatever you might want to include.
- [00:13:46.840]Students are required to complete the SCCJ Start Smart
- [00:13:51.417]course.
- [00:13:52.480]This is a course that includes a lot of information from
- [00:13:57.146]orientation, new student enrollment, more information
- [00:14:01.568]about criminology and criminal justice and the opportunity for
- [00:14:06.726]you to use Canvas.
- [00:14:09.800]So this is meant to help you have a smooth transition when
- [00:14:14.313]starting in the fall.
- [00:14:16.400]In early August, you'll receive an e-mail from the school and
- [00:14:21.005]and letting you know that you have access to the SCCJ Start
- [00:14:25.462]Smart course in Canvas and you would complete that prior to the
- [00:14:30.217]start of classes.
- [00:14:35.600]We recommend you save the date for the College of Public
- [00:14:38.844]Affairs and Community Service Big Red Welcome.
- [00:14:41.960]This will be on Tuesday, August 22nd from 2:30 to 5:00.
- [00:14:46.640]Much more information will be coming about specific happenings
- [00:14:51.073]there, but just save the date at this point.
- [00:14:59.770]If you have additional questions, don't hesitate to
- [00:15:03.172]reach out to us, to the school, to any advisors, and we'd be
- [00:15:07.164]happy to answer questions that you might have.
