- [00:00:01.920]Welcome to the College of Architecture at the University
- [00:00:04.580]of Nebraska, Lincoln.
- [00:00:05.960]My name is Leslie Gonzalez.
- [00:00:07.760]I am the Undergraduate Admissions Coordinator for the
- [00:00:10.519]College as well as one of the academic advisors within the
- [00:00:13.533]College of Architecture.
- [00:00:14.760]Our mission is to create a resilient, healthy and beautiful
- [00:00:18.329]world within a diverse and inclusive culture of rigorous
- [00:00:21.721]inquiry and innovation, united by the transformative power of
- [00:00:25.410]planning and design.
- [00:00:29.480]Our culture is to provide intellectual environment that
- [00:00:34.105]thrives because of diverse perspectives, our dynamic, close
- [00:00:39.062]knit community and the pursuit of meaningful impact.
- [00:00:45.480]Students and faculty within the College of Architecture demand
- [00:00:49.702]excellence.
- [00:00:50.920]They're courageous.
- [00:00:52.480]They practice empathy.
- [00:00:54.840]They look beyond and they strive to inspire impact.
- [00:01:01.240]As a first year student in the College of Architecture, you
- [00:01:04.723]will engage in our first year curriculum, which is a common
- [00:01:08.207]first year curriculum that's going to introduce students to
- [00:01:11.691]design through technique, the design discipline and design
- [00:01:15.117]practice.
- [00:01:15.920]There's six core design classes plus four general education
- [00:01:19.869]classes which make up this first year experience.
- [00:01:23.640]The Introduction to Design course is a course that everyone
- [00:01:27.362]will enroll in a lecture based course as well as history of
- [00:01:31.085]design.
- [00:01:32.560]And then you have four hands on courses.
- [00:01:35.160]Design thinking is going to teach students how to think
- [00:01:37.892]creatively about solving a complex problem.
- [00:01:40.280]You're not going to design a building, an interior or a
- [00:01:42.744]landscape year first year, but your professors are going to
- [00:01:45.384]pair you with a real world issue.
- [00:01:47.520]The real world issue that they were looking at on the screen
- [00:01:51.489]was to research how trash has evolved over time and then
- [00:01:55.199]present that research and then work in teams of four to propose
- [00:01:59.364]a creative solution that was going to bring awareness to
- [00:02:03.073]trash issues.
- [00:02:04.600]So this group was going to have an impact on trash through the
- [00:02:07.435]fashion industry.
- [00:02:08.480]So they designed some clothing out of recycled soda bottles,
- [00:02:11.520]grocery bags, and candy wrappers to help bring awareness to trash
- [00:02:14.811]issues.
- [00:02:15.760]The beauty about design, there is no right or wrong answer, so
- [00:02:18.905]all groups are going to have a different viable solution for
- [00:02:21.950]this problem.
- [00:02:25.000]In the spring semester, you'll take design making.
- [00:02:27.800]Design making is more model building, prototyping, testing,
- [00:02:31.219]your designs.
- [00:02:32.280]The first project on the right is going to be a little bit more
- [00:02:36.012]landscape oriented.
- [00:02:37.360]The project on the left, the cube project is going to focus
- [00:02:40.583]more on architecture and interior design.
- [00:02:43.200]And then the final project in the center is going to get you
- [00:02:46.467]out into a real project within the community where you're going
- [00:02:49.895]to go to the Haymarket, you're going to look at one of the
- [00:02:53.055]alleyways or plazas in the Haymarket and you're going to
- [00:02:56.108]design an installation for that alleyway or Plaza.
- [00:02:59.360]The one in the middle here, they were looking at the alleyway
- [00:03:02.688]behind Avonicone ice cream store and they were designing an
- [00:03:05.908]installation for people to enjoy while they waited for their ice
- [00:03:09.397]cream.
- [00:03:12.200]Everyone will take a hand drawing course.
- [00:03:14.680]It does not matter what your skill set is, you will all
- [00:03:17.795]improve.
- [00:03:18.520]You'll do 1.2 point perspectives, Life Drawing,
- [00:03:21.866]observational drawing.
- [00:03:27.120]Finally you have computer applications.
- [00:03:29.560]You do really have to enjoy spending time on a computer to
- [00:03:32.825]be a designer.
- [00:03:34.320]In this first year computers class, you're going to learn how
- [00:03:37.996]to use software programs like Rhinoceros 3D, Photoshop,
- [00:03:41.316]Indesign, Illustrator, and a little bit of AutoCAD.
- [00:03:47.760]In addition to those six design classes, you're going to take
- [00:03:50.773]four general education classes.
- [00:03:52.600]The general education program here at UNL is called ACE.
- [00:03:56.840]ACE stands for Achievement Centered Education and every
- [00:04:00.616]student who attends UNL will be taking 330 credit hours of
- [00:04:04.594]general education coursework from 10/3 credits from 10
- [00:04:08.303]different categories.
- [00:04:10.120]Now for the College of Architecture.
- [00:04:11.880]All of your general education courses are embedded into your
- [00:04:15.506]curriculum.
- [00:04:16.600]So the first year you're going to be taking English,
- [00:04:19.839]Composition, Applied Calculus, Business and Professional
- [00:04:23.323]Communications.
- [00:04:24.560]And then you'll get to choose an ACE 6 requirement, which is a
- [00:04:28.490]social science class.
- [00:04:29.800]And there are quite a few to choose from after you've
- [00:04:35.924]completed the first year.
- [00:04:38.760]So the six design classes plus the four general education
- [00:04:42.527]courses, you must meet three requirements to be considered
- [00:04:46.360]for second year.
- [00:04:49.120]The 1st is you have to pass all of your first year classes with
- [00:04:52.384]the C or better.
- [00:04:53.520]You need at least a minimum GPA of A26 or higher and you submit
- [00:04:58.086]A10 page digital design portfolio of the work that you
- [00:05:02.011]created in your first year design classes.
- [00:05:05.440]And that portfolio consists of two pages of your hand drawing
- [00:05:09.855]work, 2 pages of design thinking, 4 pages of that design
- [00:05:13.914]making, which is your model building and prototyping class,
- [00:05:18.186]and then two pages of your computer skills.
- [00:05:21.680]So those sample projects we previously looked at?
- [00:05:24.120]Those are actual portfolio submissions from previous
- [00:05:27.134]applicants.
- [00:05:28.160]There's a faculty committee of three who will review all of the
- [00:05:32.386]applicants and send out notifications on your second
- [00:05:35.887]year status.
- [00:05:37.040]Architecture accepts 75 students per year into the second year of
- [00:05:41.547]the program, Interior Design accepts 30 to 45 students per
- [00:05:45.577]year, and Landscape Architecture accepts 15 students per year.
- [00:05:50.120]All students who attend UNL will also meet experiential learning
- [00:05:54.955]requirements set forth by the university.
- [00:05:58.800]These experiential learning requirements are courses that
- [00:06:02.666]enable students to get a better grasp of how their degree will
- [00:06:06.866]directly apply to their career goals.
- [00:06:10.080]The first class that you'll take for your major will be Design
- [00:06:13.300]Thinking.
- [00:06:13.760]That you'll take in your first semester with us and then your
- [00:06:17.381]fourth year fall semester, you're going to take a
- [00:06:20.301]collaborate design studio where Architecture, Interior Design
- [00:06:23.923]and Landscape architecture students come back together to
- [00:06:27.311]work on a project like you would working for a firm in the real
- [00:06:31.049]world.
- [00:06:32.040]Other experiences that can meet these requirements are
- [00:06:35.886]internships, research or creative activity, community
- [00:06:39.663]engaged, problem solving, and study abroad opportunities.
- [00:06:45.240]In the College of Architecture, it's important to know that we
- [00:06:48.807]are one of four colleges on the UNL campus that does have
- [00:06:52.090]differential tuition.
- [00:06:53.800]Engineering, Business, Architecture, and law all have
- [00:06:57.050]differential tuition in the College of Architecture.
- [00:07:00.240]Differential tuition provides students with low faculty to
- [00:07:03.429]student ratios.
- [00:07:04.480]So your studio classes typically have 15 students to 1 faculty
- [00:07:10.024]member.
- [00:07:11.000]We also have expert fabrication personnel who run our wood shop
- [00:07:15.329]and Media Center.
- [00:07:16.960]We have dedicated spaces such as the Media Center for printing,
- [00:07:23.360]the shop for model building computer labs to support your
- [00:07:29.160]education.
- [00:07:32.200]Other opportunities within the College of Architecture include
- [00:07:35.524]opportunities to participate in undergraduate research.
- [00:07:39.680]Undergraduate research at UNL is called U Care or that's short
- [00:07:44.478]for Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research
- [00:07:48.362]Experience.
- [00:07:49.560]This is an opportunity for students to work one-on-one with
- [00:07:52.770]a faculty member.
- [00:07:54.000]It's a paid opportunity and typically it's a full semester
- [00:07:58.113]experience.
- [00:08:02.080]We always encourage students within the College of
- [00:08:05.241]Architecture to get involved in at least one College of
- [00:08:08.712]architectural organization and one university wide
- [00:08:11.874]organization.
- [00:08:13.040]The first week of school, we will hold a Dean's Welcome in
- [00:08:16.688]which all new students and current students are invited to
- [00:08:20.336]attend and you can browse the different student organizations
- [00:08:24.170]who will each have a booth.
- [00:08:26.320]We also provide free ice cream from the UNL Dairy store, so you
- [00:08:30.294]can really start meeting people, getting to know what you might
- [00:08:34.269]want to get involved in.
- [00:08:36.240]We have the professional organizations for all of our
- [00:08:39.072]majors.
- [00:08:39.720]American Institute of Architecture students, American
- [00:08:42.949]Society of Interior Designers, International Interior Design
- [00:08:46.597]Association, and the American Society of Landscape Architects
- [00:08:50.304]are the professional organizations plus several other
- [00:08:53.534]allied discipline organizations that you could choose to
- [00:08:56.942]participate in.
- [00:08:59.840]We also have opportunities to travel abroad.
- [00:09:02.400]We currently have regularly scheduled programs in Barcelona,
- [00:09:07.280]Spain, Paris, France, London, England, and Rome.
- [00:09:11.200]Italy, Spain and Paris are programs you can go to as early
- [00:09:15.562]as the summer after your first year in our programs or in the
- [00:09:20.147]Master's level of architecture.
- [00:09:23.080]London is full semester for interior design and landscape
- [00:09:27.160]architecture students in your 4th year fall semester.
- [00:09:31.360]For architecture students, it is fifth year or your first year of
- [00:09:35.512]your Master of Architecture program.
- [00:09:39.440]Finally, we have Rome.
- [00:09:40.800]Rome is currently open to either Interior design or Landscape
- [00:09:45.269]Architecture and it is typically a spring full semester
- [00:09:49.306]opportunity in the third year for Interior Design and
- [00:09:53.199]Landscape Architecture or 4th year Interior design could
- [00:09:57.308]choose to go in their spring semester.
- [00:10:02.240]We also host an annual career fair within the College of
- [00:10:06.180]Architecture, where we bring in 62 to 67 firms to spend 2 days
- [00:10:10.535]interviewing students for both internships and job placement
- [00:10:14.752]opportunities.
- [00:10:15.720]After graduation, we have some of the highest job placement
- [00:10:19.627]rates at the university, averaging over 90% for our
- [00:10:23.013]programs.
- [00:10:23.800]So within three to six months of graduation, typically all but
- [00:10:26.808]one student has secured their job.
- [00:10:31.480]One of the best ways to keep up with what's happening in the
- [00:10:36.240]College of Architecture for you or your guardians is to follow
- [00:10:41.157]us on social media.
- [00:10:42.760]That's how I get a lot of my information were found at UNL
- [00:10:47.055]Architecture on all platforms.
- [00:10:53.360]Again, in the College of Architecture, we're united by an
- [00:10:57.058]unwavering belief in the transformative power of planning
- [00:11:00.757]and design and our ability to affect change in this world.
- [00:11:07.920]Now I'm going to talk about how advising works within the
- [00:11:10.720]College of Architecture.
- [00:11:14.880]In the College of Architecture, we are a small college with
- [00:11:18.684]about 630 total students and we have 4 support staff within our
- [00:11:22.741]Student Success office.
- [00:11:24.440]Stephanie Kenning, pictured here in the upper left corner, is our
- [00:11:29.771]Director of Advising and Student Success, Jamie Mastera, and the
- [00:11:35.021]upper right corner is the Undergraduate advisor for
- [00:11:39.222]Traditional Freshmen, and she will likely be most of your
- [00:11:43.907]academic advisors in your first year all the way through
- [00:11:48.511]graduation.
- [00:11:50.240]As I mentioned at the beginning, my name is Leslie Gonzalez and I
- [00:11:53.888]am the admissions coordinator for the college as well as the
- [00:11:57.260]transfer advisor.
- [00:11:58.200]So I do advising for all students who transfer into the
- [00:12:01.394]university from other institutions or who transfer
- [00:12:04.303]into the College of Architecture from other majors on campus.
- [00:12:08.560]Finally, we have Sarah Troop in the lower right corner.
- [00:12:13.040]She is our academic navigator.
- [00:12:15.240]She will be talking with you at some point about getting you
- [00:12:18.841]connected with all of the campus resources.
- [00:12:21.640]She is really a great person if you just need some additional
- [00:12:24.697]assistance.
- [00:12:25.760]Getting connected with the resources you need to make you
- [00:12:30.245]successful on campus advising is a pretty simple process within
- [00:12:35.194]the College of Architecture.
- [00:12:38.240]We like to make sure that you know that you can meet with with
- [00:12:42.875]us about anything.
- [00:12:44.680]When you don't know who to go to, The College of
- [00:12:47.146]Architecture's advising office or student success office should
- [00:12:50.368]be the first place that you come.
- [00:12:52.440]So when in doubt, come to our office.
- [00:12:54.640]We're located in Room 232 of Architecture Hall West and we're
- [00:12:59.944]going to assist you with degree planning, minors, university and
- [00:13:05.505]college policies.
- [00:13:07.360]We're going to help connect you with University Health and
- [00:13:10.962]Wellness initiatives and opportunities, as well as timing
- [00:13:14.503]for those study abroad trips and other opportunities.
- [00:13:18.520]Now you can schedule with us anytime you want through your My
- [00:13:23.702]dot UNL account.
- [00:13:25.520]I highly recommend all students bookmark this page and you'll
- [00:13:29.297]get a copy of this presentation and you just click on the image
- [00:13:33.197]and it will take you directly to this website and then bookmark
- [00:13:37.097]it.
- [00:13:37.920]Or you can go to my.unl.edu and log in and this is the same page
- [00:13:42.683]that you will see everything on this page you will be using as a
- [00:13:47.447]student here at the university.
- [00:13:50.720]Canvas is something that you'll be using daily to interact with
- [00:13:54.873]your classes and submit your assignments.
- [00:13:57.600]Contact your instructors when you meet with Jamie or I or
- [00:14:01.968]Sarah for advising.
- [00:14:03.600]You will be using your My Red account to register for classes,
- [00:14:08.361]pay for your student bill, accept your financial aid
- [00:14:12.368]packages, so on and so forth.
- [00:14:15.560]Student Success Hub is how you're going to schedule an
- [00:14:18.256]online appointment with your advisor.
- [00:14:20.400]So if you click Student Success Hub, you'll see either Jamie or
- [00:14:24.462]me, and you'll always see Sarah there, available as an Academic
- [00:14:28.525]Navigator.
- [00:14:29.880]Then you'll be able to see our schedules and make an
- [00:14:32.452]appointment for a time that's convenient for you.
- [00:14:36.080]These other buttons, the DLC Exam Commons is where some of
- [00:14:40.310]your classes may require you to go take your exams.
- [00:14:44.440]Handshake is where you can find jobs and internships and gain
- [00:14:48.546]different types of experiences.
- [00:14:51.680]If you want to learn about all the different student
- [00:14:54.324]organizations available on campus, involve you.
- [00:14:56.800]Is that best resource to do that?
- [00:15:01.920]Sometimes the university is going to require you to do some
- [00:15:06.889]some knowledge building or acknowledgement of university
- [00:15:11.610]policies, and so they'll have you do a bridge class.
- [00:15:16.000]So if, for example, everyone needs to take the Title 9
- [00:15:19.560]training, you'll find that within your Bridge account.
- [00:15:25.240]My world is where you can learn about study abroad
- [00:15:28.096]opportunities.
- [00:15:29.120]Libraries, e-mail Before you leave, your advising appointment
- [00:15:33.257]with your advisor will help you get logged into your university
- [00:15:37.528]Huskers dot UNL e-mail and then how you can connect with campus
- [00:15:41.799]printers.
- [00:15:43.480]Speaking of e-mail, e-mail in the College of architecture is
- [00:15:47.498]vital to gain you access to your free software that you're going
- [00:15:51.779]to be using for your computers class and for your majors.
- [00:15:56.160]The Huskers e-mail is also the only e-mail, once you're
- [00:15:59.142]registered for classes, that the university faculty and staff are
- [00:16:02.656]going to use to communicate with you.
- [00:16:05.240]And I know from years of experience working with students
- [00:16:08.776]transitioning from high school to college that you don't check
- [00:16:12.618]your emails very much.
- [00:16:13.960]But in the in the working world and in in the your college
- [00:16:18.265]degree, you're really going to rely on e-mail very heavily for
- [00:16:22.862]all of your communication.
- [00:16:25.200]So it's going to be important for you to download your Husker
- [00:16:29.129]e-mail onto your phone, log into your Husker e-mail on your
- [00:16:32.931]computer, because whether or not you check it, you will be
- [00:16:36.670]responsible for the information that is found in that e-mail.
- [00:16:43.000]That Husker e-mail is also used, as I mentioned, to download the
- [00:16:47.002]software that you're going to be using within the College of
- [00:16:50.759]Architecture.
- [00:16:51.880]If you've been to visit before today, you will already know
- [00:16:56.044]that the University of Nebraska's College of
- [00:16:59.167]Architecture has a very specific laptop computer requirement, and
- [00:17:03.747]so every student coming into our college is expected to have
- [00:17:07.980]their own laptop that meets or exceeds the requirements found
- [00:17:12.283]on our computer policy.
- [00:17:14.480]Everybody should have a copy of this.
- [00:17:17.160]It's always accessible on our website architecture.unl.edu
- [00:17:21.502]under Resources, Computer, and Software.
- [00:17:26.640]One thing to know is this computer will need to be a
- [00:17:30.201]Windows operating system, and I would typically tell students
- [00:17:34.366]the most important component to search for if you're buying your
- [00:17:38.734]own not through the university, is to look for a graphics card
- [00:17:42.967]that is either recommended or acceptable from the chart below.
- [00:17:47.760]If you find a machine with the graphics card listed here in the
- [00:17:51.531]chart, that's acceptable, and then you come up to the hardware
- [00:17:55.243]specifications at the top, it's likely already going to meet all
- [00:17:59.074]of those minimum specifications.
- [00:18:01.760]It is up to you if you want to go beyond the minimum.
- [00:18:04.360]If it's feasible for you to do so, we highly encourage that.
- [00:18:08.400]If you're not buying your computer through the university,
- [00:18:12.402]we very highly recommend a three-year warranty at minimum
- [00:18:16.337]for your laptop as this is your main tool for education in the
- [00:18:20.611]College of Architecture.
- [00:18:27.760]Now we're going to talk a little bit about what you can expect to
- [00:18:31.038]enroll in as a first year student within the college.
- [00:18:33.960]This is what the architecture flow chart looks like.
- [00:18:38.760]It has the four year Bachelor of Science degree in the 1st 4
- [00:18:43.504]columns and then the last two columns are your Master of
- [00:18:47.937]Architecture requirements.
- [00:18:51.000]This is the Interior Design flow chart.
- [00:18:54.760]As we talked about earlier, there's six design classes, plus
- [00:18:59.522]the four general education classes Everyone will be
- [00:19:03.582]enrolling in Introduction to Design Design Thinking.
- [00:19:08.480]You'll choose between hand drawing or Computer applications
- [00:19:12.774]if there's still both are, if both are still open, otherwise
- [00:19:17.141]whichever one is open, and then English and math.
- [00:19:20.720]If you've got those done, your advisor will help you determine
- [00:19:24.700]what the other the best substitute courses would be for
- [00:19:28.239]those requirements.
- [00:19:35.150]And this is the landscape architecture flow chart again
- [00:19:38.373]structured similarly first year, second year, third year, 4th
- [00:19:41.942]year.
- [00:19:45.670]In addition to the six design classes plus the four general
- [00:19:49.810]education classes, everyone coming into the College of
- [00:19:53.605]Architecture will enroll in a zero credit hour, four week
- [00:19:57.607]course called the Smart Start Course Design 10.
- [00:20:01.360]And that is a course taught by Stephanie, Jamie, me and Sarah.
- [00:20:07.760]And we're really going to help you understand the importance of
- [00:20:11.889]university resources, understanding your course
- [00:20:14.987]syllabi, talking about attendance within the College of
- [00:20:18.601]Architecture.
- [00:20:20.160]Time management, which is one of the skills that our students
- [00:20:23.460]struggle with the most in their transition from high school to
- [00:20:26.814]college.
- [00:20:27.760]Goal setting, relationship building, communicating
- [00:20:31.458]professionally, and meeting with your academic Advisor.
- [00:20:39.720]When you meet with your advisors, we will recommend that
- [00:20:43.587]you run a degree audit prior to every meeting with us.
- [00:20:47.320]The degree audit is a computer generated document outlining
- [00:20:51.017]your undergraduate academic progress.
- [00:20:54.040]This record uses your UNL coursework, transfer,
- [00:20:56.965]coursework, and coursework in progress in order to determine
- [00:21:00.683]the progress you're making towards your degree completion.
- [00:21:04.920]The advising or the degree audit does not replace the
- [00:21:08.450]undergraduate catalog as a resource for the requirements
- [00:21:12.177]for your degree, and you still need to meet with your academic
- [00:21:16.296]advisor every semester.
- [00:21:18.920]The Degree audit can be accessed from your Academics tab within
- [00:21:23.949]your My Red account, and you click the Degree Audit button to
- [00:21:28.821]run that audit.
- [00:21:32.400]Speaking of the Undergraduate Catalog, the Undergraduate
- [00:21:36.511]Catalog houses important unit information on university and
- [00:21:40.839]college policies, specifically within the College of
- [00:21:44.662]Architecture.
- [00:21:45.600]You'll want to read through the Undergraduate Catalog to learn
- [00:21:49.611]about grade requirements, all core classes within your major.
- [00:21:53.920]You are required to get AC or better for those to count
- [00:21:58.234]towards your degree, and that includes English, Math, speech,
- [00:22:03.011]and all of your design classes.
- [00:22:06.120]If you have great goals and ambitions to be on the Dean's
- [00:22:10.073]List, you'll be able to find the requirements to achieve that
- [00:22:14.299]goal.
- [00:22:14.720]Within the Undergraduate Catalog.
- [00:22:17.560]You'll have the ability to find about out about academic
- [00:22:22.620]warning, the work policy.
- [00:22:25.160]Within the College of Architecture, we have a work
- [00:22:29.753]policy that states that students who are taking 12 or 13 to 16
- [00:22:35.428]hours credit hours of coursework should work no more than 16
- [00:22:40.923]hours a week to be successful within your design classes, so
- [00:22:46.417]you can find all of that here.
- [00:22:49.520]As I mentioned, you can click on these images.
- [00:22:52.200]The links will take you directly to the Undergraduate catalog,
- [00:22:55.911]where you can read through the University policies under the
- [00:22:59.504]Academic Policies tab, as well as College of Architecture and
- [00:23:03.156]Major Policies.
- [00:23:06.120]Another policy that's important to know about is our learning
- [00:23:09.341]Culture policy, the College of Architecture.
- [00:23:11.920]In the College of Architecture, you spend 12 hours a week in
- [00:23:16.014]your studio classes starting second year and higher, and
- [00:23:19.840]you'll have 8 hours in your Design making class your first
- [00:23:23.800]year in the spring semester.
- [00:23:26.000]And that learning culture policy talks about things like health,
- [00:23:30.766]safety, productivity and attendance.
- [00:23:33.840]And for first year students in our college, we really like to
- [00:23:39.282]focus on attendance with every new incoming class.
- [00:23:44.000]It is always the same in which some students will choose to
- [00:23:48.516]miss class because they might be embarrassed that they didn't get
- [00:23:53.485]their whole project done before the start of class.
- [00:23:57.960]Because our class, our studio classes, meet four hours at a
- [00:24:01.810]time at the upper level, three days a week At the first year
- [00:24:05.724]level, two days a week.
- [00:24:07.560]That's a lot of class time to miss.
- [00:24:10.320]So your professors would rather have you show up with the work
- [00:24:13.666]that you have completed, even if it's nothing, and get the
- [00:24:16.800]information, get some guidance, and continue to get that
- [00:24:19.828]knowledge.
- [00:24:20.360]Then having missed class and compound the issue.
- [00:24:23.320]Of course we don't want you to come to class if you're sick.
- [00:24:27.120]The attendance policy talks about things like reaching out
- [00:24:31.455]to your professor in advance of missing class, going to the
- [00:24:35.864]Health Center, securing a doctor's note, things like that.
- [00:24:43.120]As a student coming to UNL, transitioning from high school
- [00:24:47.849]to college, you are now the owner of your academic record,
- [00:24:52.578]which means your guardians or support system may have had
- [00:24:57.226]access to all of your assignments and grades every day
- [00:25:01.635]in your high school activities.
- [00:25:04.560]Here at UNL, you are the only one who has access to all of
- [00:25:08.546]that information about your your education.
- [00:25:11.880]So you are protected by the Family Education Rights and
- [00:25:15.982]Privacy Act, otherwise known as FERPA.
- [00:25:19.400]And that just says basically that as UNL staff and faculty
- [00:25:24.184]and employees, we are not allowed to talk to anyone but
- [00:25:28.726]you about your academic record.
- [00:25:31.640]But we know how important it is for your guardians and your
- [00:25:35.840]support system to be there for you.
- [00:25:38.400]So you have the opportunity to grant access to your My Read to
- [00:25:43.150]your parent or guardian.
- [00:25:45.640]And you also have the ability to grant written permission for
- [00:25:50.479]anyone of your choosing to grant to access your information.
- [00:25:55.640]So just know that if someone calls and asks our office to
- [00:25:59.875]tell, tell them about your grades or your classes.
- [00:26:03.600]Unfortunately we're not going to be able to do that but we will
- [00:26:07.489]help you through that process if you want us to be able to help
- [00:26:11.379]you communicate with them.
- [00:26:15.160]Couple more slides, we are going to talk about Campus resources
- [00:26:19.083]very briefly.
- [00:26:19.960]We will go over these in in a great detail during that four
- [00:26:25.029]week smart start class, but we want to get you prepared and
- [00:26:30.099]able to access these resources before you come to campus this
- [00:26:35.337]fall.
- [00:26:36.600]So we have the Center for Academic Success in Transition.
- [00:26:40.320]They're very well versed in helping with time management,
- [00:26:45.322]note taking strategies, study skills.
- [00:26:48.880]I've had so many students over the years tell me they didn't
- [00:26:52.818]have to really study in high school, so they're really
- [00:26:56.369]looking to figure out how to transition to the college
- [00:26:59.920]expectations.
- [00:27:02.160]Another very important resource is the services for students
- [00:27:06.020]with disabilities.
- [00:27:07.880]If you're a student who's had additional resources offered to
- [00:27:12.871]you through your high school, you should reach out to the
- [00:27:17.541]Services for Students with Disabilities office this summer
- [00:27:22.291]to log any learning disabilities, hearing
- [00:27:25.673]disabilities.
- [00:27:27.480]Maybe you're having surgery and need to park closer or be able
- [00:27:32.548]to access buildings easier.
- [00:27:35.120]Any type of disability that's going to require additional
- [00:27:40.093]accommodations needs to go through this office for there to
- [00:27:45.238]be an accommodation plan written on your behalf.
- [00:27:50.000]And then you will get that accommodation plan and you will
- [00:27:53.014]provide that to each of your faculty members each semester.
- [00:27:56.480]And that is the only way the faculty are required to provide
- [00:27:59.760]students with accommodations for for any kind of disability.
- [00:28:03.320]So please do make sure that you reach out to that office sooner
- [00:28:07.715]than later to get those plans going before the start of the
- [00:28:11.836]school year, as it does take time.
- [00:28:14.560]And if you wait to do it, say after fall break in October and
- [00:28:18.355]you're working towards the end of the semester, you're probably
- [00:28:22.274]not going to get those resources fast enough for it to have an
- [00:28:26.131]impact.
- [00:28:28.640]If you have any kind of financial aid or scholarship
- [00:28:32.828]questions about university scholarships or aid that goes to
- [00:28:37.570]Husker Hub.
- [00:28:38.760]They're your one stop shop for all of those questions and they
- [00:28:42.186]have virtual appointments.
- [00:28:43.600]You can click on their website, do a zoom meeting, or you can
- [00:28:47.148]walk to their office in the Canfield Administration
- [00:28:50.124]Building.
- [00:28:51.120]We also have Career Services Math Resource Center.
- [00:28:54.560]We highly recommend all of our students use the free tutoring
- [00:28:57.718]available through the Math Resource Center.
- [00:29:00.560]They have various hours to accommodate your needs.
- [00:29:04.800]If you're an architecture student and you take physics,
- [00:29:08.116]you'll also have the opportunity to use the free Physics Resource
- [00:29:12.025]Center.
- [00:29:13.040]Everyone at the University has opportunities to to use
- [00:29:17.159]counseling and psychological services.
- [00:29:20.480]If you click on their website, they'll be able to tell you all
- [00:29:24.200]the different services that they provide.
- [00:29:26.880]And of course the University Health Center is a vital tool
- [00:29:30.857]and resource for all students.
- [00:29:35.960]One of the resources that the College of Architecture will
- [00:29:39.312]provide you is a peer mentor.
- [00:29:41.320]A peer mentor is a third year or higher student in your major and
- [00:29:45.371]they will have about 11:50 first year students that they will be
- [00:29:49.361]working with.
- [00:29:50.640]They will reach out to you the week before school starts to
- [00:29:54.390]offer building tour.
- [00:29:56.440]They will attend that Zero Credit Hour Smart Start course
- [00:30:01.054]with you as well, and they're great resources for any
- [00:30:05.351]questions you have about the computer requirements or not
- [00:30:09.966]requirements but how to use some of this software, how to
- [00:30:14.581]navigate Lincoln or the downtown area or campus.
- [00:30:18.720]So please utilize them.
- [00:30:20.840]You will find out about a week or two before school starts the
- [00:30:24.943]name and contact information of your peer mentor.
- [00:30:30.640]Thank you for listening to the College of Architecture session.
- [00:30:34.240]My name again is Leslie Gonzalez.
- [00:30:36.280]You can feel free to contact me at the e-mail below or text me
- [00:30:40.903]or call me at the phone number with any questions that you
- [00:30:45.232]might have.
- [00:30:46.800]You'll be able to get a copy of the PowerPoint and the recording
- [00:30:53.168]of this at this QR code.
- [00:30:58.600]Thank you for joining us and we hope to see you soon.
