- [00:00:00.360]Hi, my name is Elisa Smith and I'm the Director of Academic
- [00:00:04.612]Advising in the College of Journalism and Mass
- [00:00:07.943]Communications and I'd like to welcome you to our Co JMC
- [00:00:11.983]family.
- [00:00:13.040]Today I'll be talking through many resources and opportunities
- [00:00:16.788]for your student.
- [00:00:18.200]So let's get started.
- [00:00:20.120]Let's look what's on the agenda for today's presentation.
- [00:00:23.720]We'll start with an overview of the degree.
- [00:00:26.880]We'll talk about expectations and privacy resources available,
- [00:00:32.485]student involvement, requirements and tips, and a
- [00:00:36.934]chance for questions and answers.
- [00:00:41.040]In the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, we have 4
- [00:00:45.979]majors.
- [00:00:46.720]Students can choose to major in Advertising and Public Relations
- [00:00:51.732]Broadcasting with two options, a news option or a media
- [00:00:56.051]production option.
- [00:00:58.240]Journalism and Sports Media and Communication.
- [00:01:02.200]Because so many of our core courses are the same, many
- [00:01:05.951]students choose to double major with inside our college.
- [00:01:10.200]If you are interested in that, please make sure you talk to
- [00:01:13.314]your advisor about that.
- [00:01:15.200]If we look at the big picture, a student needs at least 120
- [00:01:19.545]credit hours to graduate from UNL.
- [00:01:22.920]If we look at 8 semesters or four years and we divide that
- [00:01:26.989]out, it means a student needs to take 15 credit hours per
- [00:01:30.989]semester to reach that 120 if a student would need to withdraw
- [00:01:35.334]from a class or not pass a class.
- [00:01:38.080]Sometimes students can pick up courses in the summer to remain
- [00:01:41.729]on track for graduation.
- [00:01:44.120]Let's break down this 120 credit hours so you have an idea of
- [00:01:48.067]what a course plan would look like.
- [00:01:51.040]52 of those credit hours are taken within our major and
- [00:01:55.281]inside our college.
- [00:01:57.000]So they would be courses in AD, PR, Broadcasting, journalism,
- [00:02:01.960]sports, Media or JMC courses.
- [00:02:04.960]The other 68 credits hours would be taken outside of the College
- [00:02:09.337]of Journalism.
- [00:02:10.600]They would be your Aces, any minor courses, any foreign
- [00:02:14.285]language courses if a student didn't complete four years of a
- [00:02:18.366]foreign language in high school, and any liberal arts elective
- [00:02:22.513]courses.
- [00:02:25.880]When we're exploring courses outside of the college, first
- [00:02:29.210]we're going to talk about the ACE requirements.
- [00:02:32.560]ACE stands for Achievement Centered Education and through
- [00:02:36.720]these nine courses students can get a comprehensive education,
- [00:02:41.239]exposure to multiple disciplines and learn critical life skills
- [00:02:45.830]outside of their major.
- [00:02:49.840]Each of these ACE areas is a subject area.
- [00:02:53.400]For example, ACE one is written communication, ACE two is Oral
- [00:02:57.696]and visual communication, ACE three is Math and Logic, and
- [00:03:01.719]this is the one ACE where we're very specific in what course
- [00:03:05.878]students could should take.
- [00:03:08.480]All Co JMC students must take a statistics course to fulfill
- [00:03:12.642]their ACE 3 requirement.
- [00:03:14.920]ACE 4 is a science course, ACE 5 is a humanities course.
- [00:03:20.280]A six is for social Sciences, A7 is Art Appreciation, ACE 8 is
- [00:03:25.426]Social Justice or Ethics and Stewardship course, and nine is
- [00:03:30.409]a Global awareness or a diversity course.
- [00:03:34.880]Students are able to select a topic they like to cut.
- [00:03:38.320]To fulfill each of these requirements, they all must be
- [00:03:41.815]taken outside of the college and sometimes student use these to
- [00:03:45.810]explore courses that they might be interested in minoring it.
- [00:03:50.480]Like we mentioned before, all students in the College of
- [00:03:54.009]Journalism and Mass Communications must select a
- [00:03:57.044]minor outside of our college.
- [00:03:59.480]Students can choose more than one if they would like, but all
- [00:04:03.200]need to have at least one.
- [00:04:05.360]Typically, a minor is 18 credit hours in a subject.
- [00:04:09.560]Sometimes it's 15, but largely 18.
- [00:04:12.920]Students will ask if there's a minor that makes sense.
- [00:04:17.200]The answer is no.
- [00:04:18.720]Students can choose something that they like or something that
- [00:04:22.465]they think will correspond well with the job they would like to
- [00:04:26.270]have in the future.
- [00:04:28.000]On the screen is an example of many of the very popular minors
- [00:04:32.410]that our students choose, from business to athletic coaching,
- [00:04:36.750]Lots of English, Communication studies, psychology, sociology.
- [00:04:41.480]Here's a link to where you can explore all the minors on
- [00:04:44.935]campus.
- [00:04:45.600]And so there's many options for students to select.
- [00:04:48.840]Since we were a College of Mass Communications, foreign language
- [00:04:53.149]is a requirement for students in our college.
- [00:04:56.960]If a student took four years of a foreign language in high
- [00:05:00.519]school, then they have already met our language requirement.
- [00:05:05.120]If a student took at least two years of foreign language in
- [00:05:08.981]high school, but didn't complete up to four years, they have two
- [00:05:13.165]options.
- [00:05:14.200]For example, if a student took two years of Spanish in high
- [00:05:18.468]school, they could take our placement test to see where they
- [00:05:22.807]would place in this line of courses.
- [00:05:26.240]They have to go all the way through Spanish 2:02 if that's
- [00:05:30.011]the language they did in high school.
- [00:05:32.640]So if they take the placement test and end up in Spanish 102,
- [00:05:36.969]they would take Spanish 102, Spanish 2:01 and Spanish 2:02.
- [00:05:41.960]Another option for a student who did this would be to pick a
- [00:05:45.364]different language other than the language they took in high
- [00:05:48.769]school.
- [00:05:49.480]So for example, this student could take French or German, any
- [00:05:54.203]of our languages and just need to take one O 1 and one O 2 in
- [00:05:58.926]that language to fulfill their language requirements.
- [00:06:05.040]Let's look at what a first semester typically would be.
- [00:06:10.400]Students coming in straight from high school will take GMC 100.
- [00:06:15.440]Everyone in our college will take GMC One O 1 and the first
- [00:06:20.258]two in our series of communication design courses,
- [00:06:24.353]GMC 130 and GMC 131.
- [00:06:26.960]Then depending on the students major, they would take the
- [00:06:30.947]introductory AD, PR course, sports media course, or
- [00:06:34.522]journalism course.
- [00:06:36.960]Students often take a foreign language, a math or a science
- [00:06:41.208]that they needed or any of the other ACE requirements that are
- [00:06:45.670]outstanding.
- [00:06:47.320]A typical first semester schedule for us is with a
- [00:06:51.508]student enrolled in 14 to 17 credit hours.
- [00:06:56.360]We have two different faculty members who are teaching JMC
- [00:07:00.106]101.
- [00:07:00.960]The 1st is Leslie Klein.
- [00:07:03.160]Leslie will be joining our faculty this fall.
- [00:07:06.200]Her current research explores the intersection of media, law
- [00:07:10.182]and scholastic journalism.
- [00:07:12.520]Previously, she has taught high school journalism for four
- [00:07:15.896]years.
- [00:07:17.560]Sharon Baldinelli is teaching our other section of JMC 101.
- [00:07:22.400]Sharon has more than 20 years in the field of communication and
- [00:07:26.943]has done lots of work in the healthcare field.
- [00:07:31.160]Casey Richter is teaching our GMC 130 course.
- [00:07:35.880]She serves as the Communication Design Coordinator and
- [00:07:39.395]coordinates all of the 1:30 courses.
- [00:07:43.040]Casey also has many years of radio broadcasting on air
- [00:07:47.706]experience.
- [00:07:49.040]She's been at stations including K Biz One O 6.3 and The Blaze.
- [00:07:55.920]Brian Hubbard is teaching AD PR 151.
- [00:07:59.800]He founded ATTO Mexico and is quickly becoming one of the most
- [00:08:05.166]awarded and recognized integrated marketing agencies in
- [00:08:09.937]Latin America, winning major clients including American
- [00:08:14.707]Express, Ford, Citibank and Jose Guerbo.
- [00:08:19.320]Chris Graves is teaching Journalism 107.
- [00:08:23.440]She's been a reporter and line editor, assistant city editor,
- [00:08:28.520]managing editor and newspaper columnist.
- [00:08:32.320]She has over 30 years of experience in journalism.
- [00:08:35.960]In 2018, she was a member of a team awarded the 2018 Pulitzer
- [00:08:41.032]Prize for Local Reporting.
- [00:08:44.760]John Schrader is teaching Sports Media 150.
- [00:08:48.880]His scholarship focuses on broadcast presentation and
- [00:08:52.700]representation, national identity of sports ethics and
- [00:08:56.592]social media innovation, and sports media, including soccer
- [00:09:00.837]presentation and broadcasting.
- [00:09:03.600]For more than 35 years he has worked in sports, radio and TV
- [00:09:08.325]and won an Emmy for his work as a host and reporter on Comcast
- [00:09:13.205]Sports Nets Game Seven, playoff broadcast of the San Jose
- [00:09:17.697]Sharks.
- [00:09:19.600]Next on the agenda, we're going to talk about expectations and
- [00:09:23.859]privacy.
- [00:09:25.760]The first thing we're going to talk about is academic student
- [00:09:28.899]responsibilities.
- [00:09:30.320]While a student in the Co JMC at UNL, you're expected to maintain
- [00:09:35.877]a two point O cumulative GPA.
- [00:09:39.800]In addition, students in our college are required to earn AC
- [00:09:44.952]or higher in all major and minor courses, and students must also
- [00:09:50.442]complete all degree requirements before they can proceed to
- [00:09:55.510]graduation.
- [00:09:57.760]In addition to academic responsibilities, students also
- [00:10:01.322]have personal ones as well.
- [00:10:03.640]A very important one is to communicate with their academic
- [00:10:07.961]advisor and instructors.
- [00:10:10.200]Everyone in our college is here to support students, but we need
- [00:10:13.902]to know what students need.
- [00:10:16.600]I would say the biggest challenge between high school to
- [00:10:19.927]college is learning how to manage time appropriately.
- [00:10:24.600]Also, students are responsible for communicating with their
- [00:10:27.810]parents, letting them know how things are going, what's going
- [00:10:31.128]well, what's the struggle.
- [00:10:33.920]It is also up to students to seek assistance when needed.
- [00:10:37.200]As mentioned, we have lots of resources here on campus in our
- [00:10:41.141]college to help students, but we need to know if you're
- [00:10:44.700]struggling.
- [00:10:46.400]And lastly, we want students to expand their horizons and
- [00:10:50.194]explore how much is the opportunity to try things on and
- [00:10:53.924]see what fits.
- [00:10:56.240]Now we're going to talk about student privacy.
- [00:10:58.840]FERPA or the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act is how
- [00:11:03.423]this is governed.
- [00:11:05.600]The government has decided that when a student turns 18 years
- [00:11:09.723]old or they enter a post secondary institution, the
- [00:11:13.182]rights under FUPA transfer from the parents to the students.
- [00:11:17.800]That means that even if the parents or family member is
- [00:11:21.433]funding the students college education, the parent or family
- [00:11:25.391]member does not have access to any of the information.
- [00:11:29.800]The students can go into my Red if they would like and give
- [00:11:34.685]access to parents to talk with somebody at the university to
- [00:11:39.651]receive information.
- [00:11:41.920]Students can select, if they want, just billing information,
- [00:11:46.329]academic information, whatever they would like.
- [00:11:50.760]If a student has not gone in and given a parent access, we are
- [00:11:55.291]not allowed to provide information to the parents.
- [00:12:00.360]Next on our agenda is discussing the many resources available to
- [00:12:04.576]students.
- [00:12:08.600]First, we're going to talk about academic advisors.
- [00:12:12.040]Currently, there are three academic advisors in our college
- [00:12:15.584]and we are interviewing for our fourth position.
- [00:12:19.040]I'm Elisa Smith, and I'm the Director of Academic advising.
- [00:12:23.000]We also have Bridget Grant and Chris Hassan as our other
- [00:12:26.688]current advisors in the college.
- [00:12:30.040]Students are assigned an academic advisor as soon as they
- [00:12:33.827]enter our college, and we'll have that advisor all the way
- [00:12:37.679]through graduation.
- [00:12:39.560]This allows students and advisors to form a relationship
- [00:12:43.930]where they talk and learn and can make suggestions to
- [00:12:48.070]students.
- [00:12:48.760]Because of that building relationship.
- [00:12:51.520]We only serve as advisors to students in our college, so we
- [00:12:55.190]really have a chance to get to know them.
- [00:12:58.440]We help students navigate academic requirements.
- [00:13:02.000]We talk to them about support resources available for them and
- [00:13:05.826]help them network.
- [00:13:07.560]We also network with faculty and other staff across our campus so
- [00:13:11.750]we can help support students in many ways.
- [00:13:15.200]Please don't be afraid to reach out to your advisor if you have
- [00:13:18.808]a question or a concern or a struggling.
- [00:13:21.680]The sooner you reach out, the sooner we are able to connect
- [00:13:24.982]you with resources that would be helpful to you.
- [00:13:28.360]Remember, academic advisors are here to be your ally.
- [00:13:35.600]Another important resource or your incoming student is the
- [00:13:40.320]course called Jo MC100.
- [00:13:42.720]It's our first year experience course for students in the
- [00:13:45.724]College of Journalism and Math Communications.
- [00:13:48.720]Students in this course are all freshmen and they are direct
- [00:13:52.526]from high school and have not been enrolled in a college
- [00:13:56.083]before.
- [00:13:57.840]The instructor for this course will actually be your academic
- [00:14:01.914]advisor.
- [00:14:03.600]This all allows the academic advisors to really start to get
- [00:14:07.143]to know their Advisees from the very moment they come to campus.
- [00:14:11.720]Be prepared that this course opens in Canvas actually prior
- [00:14:15.375]to the first day of class.
- [00:14:17.480]So beginning August 12th, students will log into Canvas,
- [00:14:21.645]shown here on the right, and we'll start having some
- [00:14:25.517]assignments due to get them ready for their first day here
- [00:14:29.829]on campus.
- [00:14:31.320]During this course, we'll cover college basics, how students are
- [00:14:35.623]can be successful, how to get off to a good start.
- [00:14:39.360]We'll have advice from other students, we'll spend a lot of
- [00:14:43.417]time talking about majors and the degree requirements, we'll
- [00:14:47.543]work out a graduation plan, and we'll start helping you build
- [00:14:51.736]peer relationships with students in your class and Upperclassmen.
- [00:14:58.160]Another valuable resource for our students is Sarah Troop.
- [00:15:02.840]She's our in house academic navigator.
- [00:15:06.640]She is here solely to support students for many items that
- [00:15:10.846]they need.
- [00:15:12.240]If you have a question and you're not sure who to ask, you
- [00:15:15.675]can always ask Sarah Troop if you're struggling in class and
- [00:15:19.227]need extra support, if you're facing personal hardships, or if
- [00:15:22.895]you need help connecting with campus offices and other
- [00:15:26.097]resources.
- [00:15:27.200]There are times during peak registration when sometimes it's
- [00:15:30.469]harder to get in to see an advisor, and Sarah would
- [00:15:33.257]definitely help you in that time.
- [00:15:35.520]She'll connect you back to your academic advisor if we need to
- [00:15:39.372]know what's going on or what you need help with, But Sarah is a
- [00:15:43.286]very valuable resource and don't be afraid to reach out to her.
- [00:15:49.320]Another in house resource for students is Natalie Becerra.
- [00:15:54.120]She is our Career Development Specialist and her office is
- [00:15:57.777]right next to mine, so she's back with the academic advisors
- [00:16:01.558]easily accessible for students.
- [00:16:04.240]She works with career coaching for all of our available
- [00:16:08.134]students.
- [00:16:09.040]She helps students work on resumes, cover letters, helps
- [00:16:12.894]create job search strategies, and she's also a good person to
- [00:16:17.086]talk to about exploring major and minor options.
- [00:16:21.720]She teaches A sophomore level class called JMC 20, which is
- [00:16:26.102]called Professional Development.
- [00:16:29.120]Here students start their portfolio.
- [00:16:31.440]They build their linked insight, develop their resume, work on a
- [00:16:35.787]cover letter, and start building their digital identity.
- [00:16:40.920]Every Saturday, Natalie produces a weekly Career bulletin
- [00:16:46.467]newsletter.
- [00:16:47.840]This newsletter is full of internships, part time jobs,
- [00:16:52.237]full time jobs, career events on campus, scholarships, and many
- [00:16:57.263]other resources.
- [00:16:58.960]Make sure to keep an eye out for this very important newsletter
- [00:17:02.068]that comes out Saturday mornings.
- [00:17:05.480]Besides all the resources available in our college, there
- [00:17:09.816]are many more resources available across campus for all
- [00:17:14.003]students at UNL.
- [00:17:16.760]One of them is called the Center for Academic Success and
- [00:17:21.013]Transition, known as CAST.
- [00:17:23.480]This is a place that has tons of resources for students who need
- [00:17:28.116]anything for any academic support, whether it's getting
- [00:17:32.111]motivation to work on a project, whether it's battling time
- [00:17:36.391]management issues, procrastination.
- [00:17:39.240]Cast as a wonderful resource, the Writing Center is available
- [00:17:42.849]to help students for any course where they're doing writing.
- [00:17:46.880]So any English courses.
- [00:17:48.840]Many of our journalism courses If you get stuck having a hard
- [00:17:52.665]time coming up with an idea, the Writing Center is the place to
- [00:17:56.614]go.
- [00:17:57.520]The Language Lab is available for students who are taking a
- [00:18:00.411]foreign language class.
