- [00:00:03.210]Hi everyone,
- [00:00:04.350]and welcome to new student enrollment for
- [00:00:06.930]the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
- [00:00:10.650]We could not be more excited that you are here today
- [00:00:13.890]to learn more.
- [00:00:15.660]So in our college, we wanna introduce you
- [00:00:18.330]to a few of the people that you'll be seeing on campus
- [00:00:20.820]that are here to help.
- [00:00:21.990]So Tiffany Heng-Moss is our dean.
- [00:00:24.720]You will see her all around campus,
- [00:00:26.460]eating in the dining hall, getting her Starbucks drink.
- [00:00:29.280]And she is the one who oversees all that happens
- [00:00:31.830]for the college and runs many of our programs.
- [00:00:34.350]Her first point of contact when talking with you
- [00:00:37.230]is what you are here for;
- [00:00:39.300]to learn and to succeed
- [00:00:41.190]is our most important thing on campus.
- [00:00:43.740]So it's our goal always to keep you first and foremost
- [00:00:47.220]and to be able to help you in many ways.
- [00:00:50.610]Currently, our Dean's Office is located
- [00:00:52.710]on the second floor of the Nebraska East Union,
- [00:00:55.230]right next door to the Herbie's Market.
- [00:00:57.510]We are hoping that, by fall,
- [00:01:00.030]we will be back to our usual home
- [00:01:02.040]in 103 Agricultural Hall.
- [00:01:04.230]But don't worry, we will definitely let you know
- [00:01:06.930]where you can find us.
- [00:01:09.420]We have this great crew
- [00:01:10.590]that's part of our Student Success Team
- [00:01:12.750]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and specific
- [00:01:15.180]to College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
- [00:01:19.050]Megan Rothenberger, Sierra Votaw,
- [00:01:21.180]and Lindsay Daniels are here
- [00:01:22.890]to help with all your next steps, questions, and concerns.
- [00:01:26.520]For example, you may wanna contact them
- [00:01:29.010]if you have an extended illness, an emergency in the family.
- [00:01:32.640]Maybe you need to find extra help with your calculus class.
- [00:01:37.380]They are great to help with that.
- [00:01:39.810]Maybe you're a little homesick,
- [00:01:41.370]or you're having trouble meeting people.
- [00:01:43.650]We also have a lot of freshmen
- [00:01:45.060]that might have a little difficulty with time management
- [00:01:48.000]'cause it's so much different than it was in high school.
- [00:01:50.280]This is the team that can help with all of that
- [00:01:52.440]and provide resources to help you as needed.
- [00:01:55.110]They may also reach out to you.
- [00:01:57.750]Maybe it's time to turn some documents in
- [00:01:59.610]so you can sign up for classes for the spring semester.
- [00:02:03.780]Maybe you have some questions about some support work.
- [00:02:08.190]They may reach out to you as well.
- [00:02:12.540]And the Student Success Team runs our CASNR Cares program.
- [00:02:15.510]So I want you to take a screenshot of this number.
- [00:02:19.140]This is a cell phone that can be called
- [00:02:21.090]or texted any time of the day or night.
- [00:02:22.950]Somebody from the team always has it with us.
- [00:02:25.530]And it's just in case there's an emergency for a student,
- [00:02:29.070]something like that,
- [00:02:29.903]that you need to reach someone right away.
- [00:02:32.700]Faculty can report it, staff,
- [00:02:35.280]the student themselves, parents, whoever.
- [00:02:38.190]But then we can move into the mode to help, as needed.
- [00:02:44.310]The other thing that our Student Success Team helps with
- [00:02:46.440]is teaching our CASNR Start Smart class.
- [00:02:48.750]And that's AGRI 042.
- [00:02:50.820]And that's Husker Student Power framework
- [00:02:53.430]that you'll be hearing more about
- [00:02:55.410]throughout your next few months.
- [00:02:59.040]So this Start Smart course is for all incoming students,
- [00:03:02.370]just to familiarize you with the university
- [00:03:04.440]and things like that.
- [00:03:05.310]It's offered pass/no pass, zero credit,
- [00:03:07.740]so you're not paying for it.
- [00:03:08.700]But it's just to get you ready
- [00:03:10.950]to upload a couple documents to Canvas,
- [00:03:12.930]to practice writing some emails to faculty,
- [00:03:14.940]those sorts of things.
- [00:03:16.860]Lots of important topics that you'll wanna know.
- [00:03:19.050]And Sierra Votaw is our instructor for that.
- [00:03:21.330]So please reach out to her with any questions.
- [00:03:25.350]We're also fortunate to have our CASNR Career Center
- [00:03:28.590]with Julie, Darrell, and Stephanie all there to help,
- [00:03:32.520]whether it's internships, work study,
- [00:03:34.440]on-campus jobs,
- [00:03:36.120]you wanna practice interviewing a little bit ahead
- [00:03:38.670]of what you have moving forward,
- [00:03:40.170]they are here to help with that as well.
- [00:03:42.990]And they're also very important
- [00:03:44.220]because they run our Ensuring Your Future Program.
- [00:03:46.560]And this is the program I talked about
- [00:03:48.360]when you visited campus.
- [00:03:49.800]If you visited campus,
- [00:03:51.090]this is our guarantee that you'll have a job offer
- [00:03:53.670]in your area of interest
- [00:03:55.380]within six months of graduation,
- [00:03:57.240]or we will pay to retrain you.
- [00:03:59.460]And we're gonna help you reach those goals
- [00:04:01.530]by going to class and keeping your grades up,
- [00:04:04.440]getting leadership roles on campus,
- [00:04:06.270]and certainly internships.
- [00:04:09.840]So we do have a few tips for student success
- [00:04:12.270]that we like to share.
- [00:04:14.400]Academic advising is an important part
- [00:04:16.140]of your college experience.
- [00:04:17.760]We do individual advising at CASNR.
- [00:04:20.160]And so it could be a faculty advisor,
- [00:04:22.980]it could be a professional staff advisor.
- [00:04:25.890]But whoever is working with you,
- [00:04:27.780]they know the curriculum inside and out.
- [00:04:29.520]They know contacts in that area.
- [00:04:31.140]They are here to help with all those next steps.
- [00:04:34.860]I will say that we have a group of people
- [00:04:36.690]who help in the summer with NSE advising.
- [00:04:38.760]They may not be your full-time advisor.
- [00:04:41.400]But those will all be assigned by the first day of class.
- [00:04:44.130]And you can find those people.
- [00:04:46.230]Those individuals, as they're assigned,
- [00:04:47.520]are listed on MyRED.
- [00:04:48.780]And then we have something wonderful called
- [00:04:50.790]the Student Success Hub,
- [00:04:51.780]which I'm gonna talk more about in a minute,
- [00:04:53.550]which is where you can sign up for appointments with them.
- [00:04:55.920]And your advisor, they can help you
- [00:04:58.140]with scheduling your classes, building your four-year plan.
- [00:05:00.960]Maybe you're wanting to think a little bit more
- [00:05:03.300]about what careers are best for you.
- [00:05:06.300]They can help with that as well.
- [00:05:09.000]And then, of course, you are here to go to class,
- [00:05:11.760]among other things.
- [00:05:12.720]But we really want you to take the time
- [00:05:15.090]for your academic career to go to class, to show up,
- [00:05:18.150]to take advantage of office hours.
- [00:05:20.400]Really get to know your faculty
- [00:05:21.810]because at UNL and CASNR,
- [00:05:23.100]they're all very approachable,
- [00:05:24.450]and that's how you make those connections
- [00:05:26.250]for all the fun things that you wanna do in the future.
- [00:05:30.780]We also know that over time,
- [00:05:32.400]students sometimes have a little learning curve
- [00:05:35.100]with getting used to all the different dates and deadlines.
- [00:05:38.190]And so coming up with some sort of system
- [00:05:39.990]to keep you organized,
- [00:05:40.980]whether it's a paper planner, electronic planner,
- [00:05:43.980]whether you put all your classes in your Apple Watch
- [00:05:45.990]so it can notify you when it's time
- [00:05:48.000]to wake up from your nap and head to class.
- [00:05:50.850]All of those things are important.
- [00:05:52.710]One thing that you'll wanna do when you get the syllabus
- [00:05:55.260]for all your classes is to write down all the tests,
- [00:05:57.750]the quizzes, the assignments, the finals.
- [00:06:00.480]Put those in one place
- [00:06:01.710]so that you can be working towards that,
- [00:06:02.847]and so nothing sneaks up on you.
- [00:06:04.770]And then, of course,
- [00:06:05.603]making sure you know what the academic calendar is,
- [00:06:07.830]'cause there's good things in there like fall break
- [00:06:10.020]and when classes start in January and when spring break is.
- [00:06:13.230]So make sure you know what those dates are
- [00:06:15.240]for the coming year.
- [00:06:18.240]You also will be blessed with a fabulous new Huskers email
- [00:06:21.720]as part of your transition to the university.
- [00:06:24.630]You'll be able to create this account,
- [00:06:26.190]if you haven't already.
- [00:06:28.140]All university communication goes through this account,
- [00:06:31.110]so make sure.
- [00:06:32.040]Your instructors are gonna email you through there.
- [00:06:33.930]The Dean's Offices.
- [00:06:35.880]Any clubs or organizations will use that.
- [00:06:37.890]So make sure that you are knowing how to get to that account
- [00:06:41.280]and that you are using it.
- [00:06:44.940]And then, of course, we want you to keep up to date
- [00:06:46.920]on everything that's happening on campus and in CASNR.
- [00:06:49.590]We have two weekly emails that go out,
- [00:06:51.510]the Insider Connections and the CASNR Career News,
- [00:06:54.120]so you'll know about scholarships, club meetings,
- [00:06:56.820]volunteer and leadership opportunities,
- [00:06:59.340]opportunities for career fairs coming up,
- [00:07:01.530]all those next steps.
- [00:07:03.540]Make sure that you are checking your email
- [00:07:05.580]on a regular basis.
- [00:07:06.630]And then, of course,
- [00:07:07.463]we do have all of our social media platforms.
- [00:07:09.480]So please like and follow, as needed.
- [00:07:14.430]Of course, there's the inside-the-class experiences
- [00:07:17.220]and there's everything that happens outside of class.
- [00:07:19.860]So we wanna make sure that you're connecting
- [00:07:21.870]with what's perfect for you,
- [00:07:23.100]whether that's undergraduate research
- [00:07:24.900]through honors or the UCARE program,
- [00:07:27.360]whether that's working with Darrell
- [00:07:30.750]to set up some experiential learning,
- [00:07:32.700]volunteering places, getting some other experiences.
- [00:07:36.270]Our career services group to help you with internships.
- [00:07:40.830]Maybe you're excited about one of the 500-plus clubs
- [00:07:43.770]and organizations at the university
- [00:07:45.360]or the more than 50 in CASNR.
- [00:07:47.340]We can help get you connected with those.
- [00:07:49.080]And then, of course, we do have our amazing,
- [00:07:51.180]faculty-led education abroad trips.
- [00:07:53.340]So more information on all of that can be found
- [00:07:57.570]on our website.
- [00:07:58.410]So be sure to check it out and plan accordingly.
- [00:08:02.250]And then, of course, we have lots of platforms and systems
- [00:08:05.790]for you to learn about when you come to campus.
- [00:08:08.370]And there's one page.
- [00:08:12.226]My.unl.edu has got all of this.
- [00:08:15.360]And it's kind of your landing page for everything.
- [00:08:18.330]And we're gonna talk through just a couple of those systems.
- [00:08:21.270]So one that's important is Canvas.
- [00:08:22.950]That's the one that you're gonna use
- [00:08:24.120]for all your academic things.
- [00:08:27.300]So your class assignments, your syllabi, your grades.
- [00:08:30.480]Everything goes through your Canvas account.
- [00:08:33.630]Make sure that you read through all of that.
- [00:08:35.310]Instructors expect you to know that information.
- [00:08:38.010]I already briefly mentioned Student Success Hub.
- [00:08:40.710]That is a great way to schedule appointments with advisors,
- [00:08:45.810]with instructors, with our career services,
- [00:08:47.730]our Student Services Team.
- [00:08:49.230]And it takes away
- [00:08:51.000]from having all those emails back and forth.
- [00:08:52.830]You can just look at their calendar and your calendar
- [00:08:54.930]and seek accordingly.
- [00:08:56.190]And then, of course, you've used MyRED
- [00:08:58.050]if you're at this point, because you signed up for NSE,
- [00:09:01.110]you paid your enrollment deposit.
- [00:09:02.580]You did many of those things through MyRED.
- [00:09:04.710]You will continue to use that as a student.
- [00:09:07.140]That's where you sign up for classes,
- [00:09:09.120]that's where you get your bills,
- [00:09:10.500]that's where you accept your scholarships, and so forth.
- [00:09:13.710]All of that will be in your MyRED account.
- [00:09:16.530]And make sure that you're updating your email,
- [00:09:19.860]your phone number, maybe your address,
- [00:09:22.080]as you change addresses.
- [00:09:23.580]All of that will be in there.
- [00:09:26.160]Of course, many of you will live in residence halls.
- [00:09:29.460]And all the information
- [00:09:30.630]on move-in can be found right on this link.
- [00:09:33.180]Make sure you're getting to know your RA,
- [00:09:35.340]that you're meeting new people.
- [00:09:36.810]If you're living in a fraternity
- [00:09:38.040]or you're living on campus,
- [00:09:39.810]I really encourage you to work hard
- [00:09:41.550]to meet people everywhere you go,
- [00:09:43.590]because that's part of the fun of coming to college.
- [00:09:46.560]And then, of course, transportation is a big thing
- [00:09:49.320]as we move through a new academic year.
- [00:09:52.380]So parking permits.
- [00:09:53.700]If you're bringing a car to campus,
- [00:09:55.470]that is absolutely great.
- [00:09:58.110]You can go to our parking website,
- [00:09:59.670]and you can purchase that permit.
- [00:10:00.860]It is based on your license plate.
- [00:10:02.760]So you don't need a sticker or a hand tag anymore.
- [00:10:05.460]And as soon as the semester starts,
- [00:10:07.320]then your parking pass will be active.
- [00:10:10.050]And then making sure you know where you can park.
- [00:10:12.900]And there's parking spots on both campuses.
- [00:10:15.390]So keep that in mind,
- [00:10:17.190]where you can park based on what your permit is for.
- [00:10:19.470]And then, of course, we have great bus routes
- [00:10:21.540]that connect us from City to East to Innovation Campus,
- [00:10:25.740]different routes for different places.
- [00:10:28.860]So you can take a look at that, download the app,
- [00:10:32.310]and make sure you're ready with your pass.
- [00:10:34.350]I believe that usually the new bus routes
- [00:10:37.200]for the year start on Sunday.
- [00:10:38.820]So make sure that you take a chance on Sunday
- [00:10:41.370]before classes start on Monday to ride the bus once
- [00:10:44.280]to get used to it.
- [00:10:46.560]And then we have a lot of events
- [00:10:47.820]that are coming up in CASNR.
- [00:10:49.980]We do a big welcome for all of our students,
- [00:10:52.260]freshmen, transfer students, on August 22nd.
- [00:10:54.600]That's the Thursday before classes start.
- [00:10:57.300]There will be free food, there will be gifts.
- [00:10:59.910]You'll get to meet other students that are coming in
- [00:11:01.830]and faculty and staff.
- [00:11:03.270]And then we do a big East Campus Welcome Back
- [00:11:05.580]on the first Thursday of class,
- [00:11:07.020]which this year is August 29th.
- [00:11:08.790]And this will involve kind of a club fair
- [00:11:11.010]for all of our East Campus organizations,
- [00:11:12.930]so it's a great time to meet and connect.
- [00:11:15.600]We also have a lot, a lot, a lot of other events coming up
- [00:11:18.960]as part of Big Red Welcome and other activities,
- [00:11:21.060]and all these links will show you where to find those.
- [00:11:24.810]We could not be more excited
- [00:11:26.490]to have you part of our CASNR community.
- [00:11:28.920]Please let us know if you need anything,
- [00:11:30.750]and we are so excited to see you on campus very soon.
