- [00:00:03.510]Hello, I'm Tanner Brandl. I'm in mechanical engineering.
- [00:00:07.320]I'm a currently a senior.
- [00:00:09.390]And so, this project
- [00:00:10.980]was a project with MSForward Gym outta Omaha.
- [00:00:14.670]We found this project going through the list
- [00:00:17.160]at the beginning of the year,
- [00:00:18.000]looking at the different projects we could take on
- [00:00:20.130]for senior design.
- [00:00:21.870]And this project really spoke to us
- [00:00:24.060]because we gotta work with real individuals.
- [00:00:26.430]You know, it wasn't just gonna be part of an assembly line.
- [00:00:29.310]It was gonna be working with actual individuals
- [00:00:31.830]that had a problem that we could help solve
- [00:00:33.900]and help them out a little bit in their life.
- [00:00:36.660]This is the third iteration of a leg press
- [00:00:38.700]for MSForward Gym.
- [00:00:40.230]So we are going through,
- [00:00:41.430]and basically redesigned every part of this leg press.
- [00:00:45.900]And we wanted to reduce the resistance
- [00:00:49.230]and make it a little bit more usable for patients,
- [00:00:51.690]just to make everything a little bit easier to use
- [00:00:53.550]on the leg press.
- [00:00:55.260]Hi, I'm James Admiraal,
- [00:00:56.700]and I'm a senior in mechanical engineering at UNL.
- [00:01:01.020]So, we're working on the pneumatic leg press,
- [00:01:03.630]and some of the challenges have been
- [00:01:06.420]making sure that the friction in the system is really low,
- [00:01:10.170]'cause we want this cylinder to have a really low resistance
- [00:01:13.350]for people who don't have very much strength in their legs.
- [00:01:16.830]Another challenge that we faced
- [00:01:19.170]was working with the controls
- [00:01:23.910]and finding a way to drop the resistance
- [00:01:28.140]in the cylinder very quickly,
- [00:01:31.710]so that if someone's using the machine
- [00:01:33.720]and they experience a spasm,
- [00:01:36.030]the machine doesn't keep going, keep running, and hurt them.
- [00:01:40.650]So, we played around with that,
- [00:01:42.180]and played around with the controls
- [00:01:43.500]to make sure it's really usable.
- [00:01:46.620]My name is Noah Hoffschneider.
- [00:01:48.300]I'm a senior mechanical engineering major.
- [00:01:52.140]And yeah, I'm with the MSForward Leg Press project.
- [00:01:55.470]So, here's our project.
- [00:01:56.970]Currently, it's not quite done, but it's close.
- [00:02:00.150]So it's a leg press for MS patients.
- [00:02:04.440]They can pull their wheelchair right up to here
- [00:02:08.033]and then push on this with their legs.
- [00:02:11.880]And there's gonna be a control panel right here
- [00:02:18.870]that will have an e-stop
- [00:02:20.100]and then it'll read out the force.
- [00:02:22.770]And then there's also gonna be a remote
- [00:02:25.860]with a cable that they can hold in their hand.
- [00:02:28.590]And then it has this foot plate. The angle can adjust.
- [00:02:36.914](leg press clattering)
- [00:02:44.640]Just give them some more freedom with that.
- [00:02:47.160]Sometimes MS patients can have pretty poor ankle mobility,
- [00:02:52.350]so, yeah, that is helpful for that.
- [00:02:56.145]And, then we have all the pneumatics.
- [00:02:59.610]And there's gonna be enclosures,
- [00:03:03.570]that'll be in later this week, we'll see that.
- [00:03:06.480]But, yeah, that's pretty much the design right now.
- [00:03:10.858](upbeat music)
