- [00:00:03.169]Hi, I'm Doctor Patty Kuo.
- [00:00:04.821]I'm an assistant professor
- [00:00:06.289]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:08.208]in the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies.
- [00:00:11.661]I've been in this role since 2019,
- [00:00:14.664]and prior to this,
- [00:00:15.832]I was working and teaching
- [00:00:17.467]at the University of Notre Dame
- [00:00:19.269]as a researcher and then
- [00:00:20.954]as a visiting assistant professor.
- [00:00:23.873]I received my PhD
- [00:00:25.558]from the University of Michigan
- [00:00:26.993]in Developmental Psychology.
- [00:00:28.912]The Department of Child, Youth and Families Studies
- [00:00:31.164]has a number of on campus
- [00:00:32.966]degree programs,
- [00:00:33.767]as well as remote distance
- [00:00:35.035]learning programs.
- [00:00:36.453]I'm involved mostly
- [00:00:37.637]in the on campus programs,
- [00:00:40.290]specifically the
- [00:00:41.408]Inclusive Early Childhood Education major
- [00:00:44.577]for undergraduates,
- [00:00:45.829]which is a teacher preparation major
- [00:00:48.298]designed to prepare students
- [00:00:49.766]to teach students
- [00:00:51.201]from birth
- [00:00:52.102]through grade three,
- [00:00:53.787]including young students
- [00:00:55.138]with disabilities.
- [00:00:56.790]I'm also the coordinator
- [00:00:58.308]for our largest degree program,
- [00:00:59.993]which is the undergraduate major
- [00:01:01.611]in Human Development and Family Science.
- [00:01:04.647]This major is wonderful
- [00:01:06.266]because we prepare students to work with
- [00:01:09.803]people and families
- [00:01:11.387]in a wide range of professions,
- [00:01:13.790]including counseling,
- [00:01:16.209]medicine,
- [00:01:17.243]criminal justice,
- [00:01:18.828]social work and social services,
- [00:01:21.531]even finance and
- [00:01:24.150]ministry.
- [00:01:26.419]So what I love
- [00:01:27.353]about that major
- [00:01:28.338]is that we really prepare students
- [00:01:30.440]to work with people
- [00:01:31.441]who are going through their typical lives
- [00:01:34.127]and in times of crisis.
- [00:01:36.579]I also advise
- [00:01:37.781]graduate students in our
- [00:01:39.770]on campus master's
- [00:01:40.984]and PhD programs.
- [00:01:43.186]For students working with me,
- [00:01:45.155]they get training
- [00:01:45.905]in my research expertise,
- [00:01:47.524]which is focused on
- [00:01:48.608]early relational health,
- [00:01:50.410]including the areas
- [00:01:51.544]of parent child attachment,
- [00:01:54.464]biopsychosocial factors
- [00:01:56.983]that shape fathering in families,
- [00:01:59.853]and the role of gender
- [00:02:01.471]in parenting young children.
- [00:02:03.907]What I really love about being in CEHS
- [00:02:06.659]and this Department
- [00:02:07.861]of Child, Youth and Family Studies
- [00:02:09.846]is that it's a place for students
- [00:02:11.414]and faculty to be their whole selves.
- [00:02:14.134]I've met students from all walks of life,
- [00:02:16.686]from students
- [00:02:17.887]who have been refugees
- [00:02:19.172]from their home countries
- [00:02:21.274]to working mothers
- [00:02:24.060]and students from all over Nebraska.
- [00:02:27.764]For me, outside of being a professor
- [00:02:29.933]and doing research
- [00:02:30.867]and mentoring students,
- [00:02:31.885]I'm also an actor.
- [00:02:33.086]Several of my students
- [00:02:34.154]have come see me in production,
- [00:02:36.222]and they've had a lot of fun,
- [00:02:37.674]and I love seeing them there too.
- [00:02:39.409]So I really love getting
- [00:02:40.410]to know students
- [00:02:42.245]from
- [00:02:43.830]all parts of
- [00:02:45.481]Nebraska and all parts of the world.
