- [00:00:03.386]Hello.
- [00:00:04.437]My name is Lauren Gatti
- [00:00:05.989]and I am an associate professor
- [00:00:07.791]in the Department of Teaching,
- [00:00:09.175]Learning and Teacher Education
- [00:00:10.910]in the College of Education
- [00:00:12.445]and Human Sciences
- [00:00:13.663]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:17.650]I came to you in UNL in 2012,
- [00:00:20.086]and before that I was a high school
- [00:00:21.705]English teacher
- [00:00:22.489]in and around Chicago for 11 years.
- [00:00:25.675]My primary role here in TLTE
- [00:00:28.645]is that I coordinate
- [00:00:29.562]the Secondary English Education Program,
- [00:00:32.365]and that's a program for students
- [00:00:34.334]who want to become middle
- [00:00:35.602]or high school English teachers.
- [00:00:37.821]And we're so proud of this program.
- [00:00:39.522]It's a really unique
- [00:00:40.673]interdepartmental program
- [00:00:42.225]between the Department of English
- [00:00:43.810]and TLTE.
- [00:00:45.612]And that means that there's
- [00:00:46.463]a cohort of professors
- [00:00:48.381]from English and Education
- [00:00:50.533]who meet every single month
- [00:00:52.602]to talk about
- [00:00:53.470]our shared cohort of students
- [00:00:55.188]who travel through the program
- [00:00:56.389]together for two years.
- [00:00:59.743]It's an amazing program
- [00:01:01.277]where you learn to teach
- [00:01:03.346]in schools every single semester
- [00:01:06.049]with the support of thoughtful,
- [00:01:08.084]experienced professors
- [00:01:09.619]here in English and in Education.
- [00:01:12.355]We're one of the very best
- [00:01:13.790]Teacher Education programs
- [00:01:15.225]and English in the state.
- [00:01:16.826]We're really proud of it.
- [00:01:18.945]My areas of research broadly
- [00:01:20.897]are teacher education,
- [00:01:22.031]and within that big
- [00:01:23.900]kind of umbrella,
- [00:01:25.185]there are a lot of things I do and study.
- [00:01:27.387]One is that I study
- [00:01:28.304]how people learn to teach,
- [00:01:29.756]especially in the context of classrooms,
- [00:01:32.725]and I'm really interested
- [00:01:33.676]in where conflict pops up and tension.
- [00:01:36.296]And I look at how that
- [00:01:38.598]drives learning
- [00:01:39.499]because you cannot learn to teach
- [00:01:41.234]without experiencing
- [00:01:42.285]conflict and tension,
- [00:01:43.286]both like interpersonally
- [00:01:44.504]and intrapersonally.
- [00:01:46.122]So that's one area.
- [00:01:47.607]Another area is teacher education policy,
- [00:01:50.176]and I look at
- [00:01:51.845]how policies affects
- [00:01:53.713]the students on the ground
- [00:01:54.881]and how policies are made more broadly.
- [00:01:58.301]And finally,
- [00:01:59.035]I'm really interested lately
- [00:02:00.904]in ethics and teaching.
- [00:02:01.971]And I'm currently writing a book
- [00:02:04.112]under contract with
- [00:02:05.208]Teachers College Press
- [00:02:06.826]called The Ethical Long View.
- [00:02:09.078]And I'm working with a professor
- [00:02:10.797]at North Carolina State University.
- [00:02:13.766]She's a professor of philosophy
- [00:02:16.002]and education.
- [00:02:17.787]And we're looking at the ethical dilemmas
- [00:02:19.873]that teachers face in the classroom.
- [00:02:22.542]And we're developed
- [00:02:23.326]we've developed a
- [00:02:24.043]basically a theory
- [00:02:24.978]of professional ethics
- [00:02:25.962]to help practicing teachers
- [00:02:27.714]and in-service teachers
- [00:02:29.299]navigate the just the unbelievable number
- [00:02:32.385]of ethical decisions
- [00:02:34.070]that need to be made every day.
- [00:02:35.622]What I love about CEHS
- [00:02:38.741]and TLTE, my department is the students.
- [00:02:42.462]They are awesome.
- [00:02:44.264]And even when I have like a rough day
- [00:02:46.216]and we all have them
- [00:02:47.016]right where you're
- [00:02:47.567]you come home and you're crabby
- [00:02:48.918]and you're just too busy.
- [00:02:50.887]I still go to bed thinking,
- [00:02:52.572]You know what?
- [00:02:53.089]I love my job
- [00:02:54.858]and that is really because
- [00:02:56.109]of the students I work with.
- [00:02:57.377]They are incredible,
- [00:02:58.461]thoughtful people who are open to growth
- [00:03:01.931]and open to the world,
- [00:03:03.316]and they make me feel
- [00:03:04.400]so much better about,
- [00:03:06.669]honestly, education,
- [00:03:07.754]to think that they're
- [00:03:08.471]going to be in the field
- [00:03:09.339]affecting thousands, hundreds of lives
- [00:03:12.559]makes me really
- [00:03:13.877]feel like my work is meaningful.
- [00:03:15.728]So we hope you join us here at UNL.
- [00:03:18.164]I hope to see you on campus
- [00:03:20.016]and I hope to see you in our program
- [00:03:21.701]in Secondary English Education.
- [00:03:23.269]So thank you so much.
